I have a lenovo thinkpad and my internal microphone works only when i connect another mic through the jack. Even the mic mute button present on my laptop is not working.(There is no such problem on windows se7en) Earlier, even an external mic never used to work. After some searching i added "options snd-hda-intel model = thinkpad" to my alsa-base.conf file. And then the internal mic started working only when an external mic was connected.
when i type "cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec" i get:

I looked into the HD-Audio-Models.txt but couldn't locate the exact model for ALC269 so i searched online and decided to put model = thinkpad as i'd mentioned earlier. But The alsa-mixer shows card to be HDA Intel and chp as intel g45 devctg. Moreover, even this partial working of mic(s) is when i choose the input source in the alsamixer to be front mic and not int mic.
I have trying to figure out for the past two weeks why the internal speakers are not working with Ubuntu 10.04.
Have gone as far as upgrade alsa but gosh...! However, if i use external speakers, the sounds play very well.
I like ubuntu and i would not like to go back to windows..

when i select mute on the volume control in the ubuntu control panel the sound gets muffled but does not mute. also if i plug in headphones the headphones are fine but the speaker sound just goes muffled not off completely as expected. this happens in iplayer and videos. rythmbox works fine. running ubuntu 10.10 64bit on samsung r720 and lspci | grep udio returns

After I listened to the audio program on the Google Chrome, I downloaded the MP3 to listen again offline. When I clicked on the downloaded MP3 file and using Totem to hear on my computer, there is no sound. I checked the sound preference, there is NO MUTE.
I restarted computer, clicked on the MP3 file with Totem, I can hear. I can hear the sound on ...... Which process should I restart without reboot computer. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. Here is the output after execute command "sudo lshw -c sound"

I just installed Fedora 13 on my HP HDX 16 laptop (and accidentally corrupted my vista partition by resizing it so I'm pretty much stuck now. ^_^)
The light for the wifi toggle button constantly flashes between blue and orange (normally meaning the wifi card is on or off). Does anybody know how I can fix this?
Sorry for the lack of a description, but I do not know much about how Linux enables LEDs. I have set the button up in the XFCE keyboard settings to mute, but the LED does not work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI think this is a bit of a complicated problem so bear with me while I explain it. I'm using an HP Laptop with Ubuntu 10.10. The laptop has the touch buttons for mute and volume up/down, and I use them all the time (at least when I was on Windows). I've very recently switched to Ubuntu and now those keys are causing problems with a game called Minecraft. Basically, when I'm playing it and use those keys, it brings me out of full screen (if I'm using fullscreen) and then seems to mute like it should, but the problem is, it doesn't UNmute when I press it again. The lighted button on the laptop goes back to showing its unmuted, but the game still has no sound. I've tried messing with the sound settings inside the game, and doing all these weird combos of when I mute/unmute and all, nothing seems to help. I usually have to restart the computer to fix it, but then if I use the button again, it does the same thing.
P.S. does anyone know of a way for these buttons to NOT interrupt full screen? I had the same problem with it interrupting fullscreen apps on windows, but then I used a program called 3RVX and it fixed it. Is there anything like this on linux?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn the last week, I noticed that my compaq 6710b physical controls for volume control/mute stopped working correctly. The volume control is not working anymore and the mute "unmutes" itself after precisely 1 minute.
I was wondering:
1/ did an update modify anything
2/ is there a way for me to know if the problem is physical? like a physical signal sniffer of some sort, or a log that indicates that I pressed mute
3/ Am I alone? and if not, does anyone know of a workaround?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux and have an old laptop did clean reinstall windows 98 but no updates, and now burnt iso image to cd on other pc and used it to try running puppy linux 3.01 on the compaq armada laptop (spec 56.0MB RAM, AMD-K6(tm)-III Processor used space 645MB free 3.80GB). I chose this older version as I think I'd read that this is more suitable for older slow computers.
I am interested in running linux fully without windows 98 or with it. Running from CD I have to select Xvesa I think as Xorg didn't seem to work. Tried partitioning but in GParted find myself unable to amend the size of partitions - got yellow exclamation mark next to the partitions. What I see is: greyed out unallocated 7.38MB, then /dev/hda1 yellow exclamation mark filesystem unknown 206.72MB, /dev/hda2 yellow exclamation fat32 4.45GB.
It does not allow resizing when I try. Associated with the yellow exclamation marks is the warning "unable to read the contents of this filesystem! Because of this some operations may be unavailable. I have done a defragment of C in windows already. (Also haven't been able to connect to internet on linnux with my wireless card.)
I have a Compaq R4000 laptop with 2GB of RAM, running Ubuntu Linux 9.10. It is randomly locking up on me, approximately once every two days. I have a second partition with Windows XP Home installed, and I have had the system lock up in XP as well, meaning I believe this is a hardware issue. I have run two passes of Memtest86+ with no errors.The system has a fan that has died, so I initially suspected overheating. However the system just locked up on me while I was in the middle of typing a script to warn me / shut down if the temperature was too high. When the lockup happened the temperature was 88°F, so I am now starting to believe that may not be the issue.When the system locks up, I cannot SSH in nor ping it. Nothing shows in syslog when I reboot. I have configured it to send syslog messages to a local server as well and no messages appear on that server when the lockup happens.

When I plug either headphones or external speakers into the headphone jack (whether on the docking station or the laptop itself), the laptop speakers aren't muted. I can hear sound coming from both simultaneously. I've tried editing the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf in all kinds of ways, my most recent attempt being to add the line:

I'm using 10.04 with the 2.6.32 kernel. I tried installing the .34 kernel with no better results, so I switched back.
Is there a way I can mute my laptop from the console. At times I'm in class and want to log in but... I have to make so much noise.
This will help me switch to a (Ctrl+Alt+ n) terminal and save myself from having to make such loud noises.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed SLED 11 (and openSuse 11.1 as well) but the wireless button(WIFI ON/OFF) which is next to power button of my laptop does not work. It worked in vista (formatted the HD and installed SLED 11 as soon as I bought the notebook ) the wireless driver is Ath5k. The button should actually light up the LED and if the Wireless card is active LED should be BLUE, and ORANGE if the wireless is disabled.. Now its always ORANGE!
I tried to capture the hardware address of the LED but it was a failure! (previously I configured Touchpad ON/OFF switch by myself writing a small script after retrieving values from dmesg)...
So the main issue I have is WIFI On/Off switch (and LED) doesn't work well...
I want to install Linux on my laptop. I started with Arch but 4 hours later, I'll take anything so now I'm trying Ubuntu.It appears that the keyboard function button that corresponds to my wireless does not work, and perhaps is windows dependent?Every time I try to interact with wlan0, I get the error "Operation not possible due to RF-kill". And as I've looked around online, it has been suggested in other forums that the only way to resolve this is to reinstall windows and dual boot, so the FN key will work.
I think this is ridiculous. There must be a way to persuade the RF-kill to be turned off again, shouldn't there?I don't have a recover disk for this laptop and I don't want to go through the trouble of requested one from acer. I reformatted the whole disk while attempted to install arch.

I recently built a new computer, and my sound works fine, but the speakers don't mute when I plug my headphones in. The headphones work, other than there is also sound coming from the speakers.
