I got to the part where I'm supposed to partition Mint. I've got a 500GB hard drive, and I thought I'd give 300GB to LM--but I'm unclear about using ext2, 3 or 4. What about the swap file? Is that automatic?

I'm looking for a good partition scheme to install BT4 dual boot with windows 7, I've freed up about 160 G for my install and was going to use BT4 as an everyday distro and wanted enough space to install extra packages like vlc and what not as well as use wordlist.sh to create a substantial dictionary. These are my initial partitioning plans 3G /,6G usr, and about 3G swap with the rest being /home for word lists and whatnot would you mind sharing your partitioning setups so I can make this efficient as possible?

Recently, my Mint update informed me it had an upgraded kernel version of Mint 9 and asked did I want to upgrade. Me, not being an old hand at things Linux, upgraded. Instead of overwriting the older version, it put the upgraded version of Mint 9 BESIDE the older one. So now I have, actually, 4 versions of Mint 9 on my PC,(generic plus recovery mode for each) which is dual booted with Vista Home Premium.
I don't want this. I have had weird problems and hiccups since I upgraded. I want to get rid of the newer kernel version and use only the older one. How do I uninstall the upgraded version of Mint 9? I have tried to boot into the older version, but there is no desktop and I have to type on the boot screen and in the terminal. It wants commands I don't know how to give. How do I restore my older version of Mint 9?
I just want one version on my PC in the dual boot with Windows Vista. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this? If you give me terminal commands, please make sure they are copy and paste ready. lol.
If uninstalling involves deleting partitions and doing a manual partitioning and formatting, I'll need easy instructions for that also.
I wished to know if I can install windows 7 on my system when I am already running Linux Mint 10(as the only operating system on my machine). That configuration is called a dual boot. If you install Win7 first (or it is already present), THEN install linux, you will find that grub notices both and you will not need to mess with the MBR. The better solution is to load mint, add VirtualBox, and install Win7 into a virtual machine. Then you get to run Linux and Windows AT THE SAME TIME!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI think the title says it all really - I've installed Mint onto a Acer aspire 5315 laptop. Its a dual boot system using Vista Basic. Grub works perfectly and to be honest Mint is great. really enjoying playing and learning. My problem is that the laptop overheats when using Mint - the cpu fan doesn't cut in and the laptop shuts down to protect the system. According to a swift google this seems to occur with mint (possibly particularly with Acer's) and maybe with other distro's too. However I'd like to keep trying to see if i can find one that works.
So my rather obvious newbie question is can I just get another distro dvd and install this onto the partition containing mint thus deleting the previous install? If I did this would Grub show the new distro ok or would it keep searching for Mint. I have a back up so if all else fails I can reinstall everything but that will have to wait till I get home

I have the new Intel i7 950 processor and I run Windows 7 Proffesional 64 bit, so I assumed I had to pick the ia64 debian image. However the CD I burned from the ia64 image didn't boot. I've managed to install i386 Debian on a older intel pentium 4 computer before and that worked fine. I believe I used another application to burn the CD then. This time I've burned the CD with the default Windows CD burn application. I can try burn more CD's but I don't have much left so I want to make sure this is the problem before attempting again. (the burned files on the ia64 CD look exactly the same as the files on the i386 CD, when browsing through the cd files in windows) "If your PC has a 64-bit AMD or Intel processor, you will most likely need the "amd64" images (though "i386" is also fine), the "ia64" images will not work."This seems a bit strange, they recommend me to use the amd64 image if you have a "64-bit AMD or intel processor". So I finished downloading Windows XP Ultimate (It is real. It's not officially supported by Microsoft) and I expected it to be small like Ubuntu was. I only have a CD-RW drive. I realized the extreme size difference with Ubuntu over 600mb and XPU over 4gb. I know how to modify partitions from the Live CD. I'm wondering if it's possible to install XPU or any version of XP while the operating system is active. It was possible with Windows 98. This might be the wrong place to post, but I really want to dual-boot Windows. Linux is great, but I would like to use SOME of my stuff without WINE.

I'm pretty sure something in Ubuntu is causing the problem as this only started happening after I installed it. I used to get heavily distorted sound in Windows, and now nothing at all. I've tried removing pulseaudio and disabled alsa, restarted ubuntu and then went into Windows, and it didn't help. Sound is 100% fine in ubuntu.

I currently have both hard drives installed in my PC and the larger one (640GB) has Windows 7 installed and is currently taking up that entire drive. My other hard drive (160GB) has a wubi install of Ubuntu 10.10 on it so it shows up on the Windows boot menu. I have Microsoft Windows Xp installed on my Primary Drive C: and I had a Mint boot disc that I would pop in and load from. Well I got tired of this disc and installed a new hard drive in my computer so I could use Mint as a secondary OS. Everything went good in the install, and I put Mint on the second drive. But when I boot my computer the GRUB menu only shows Linux Helena Mint 8 to load from and no Xp. Xp is still currently installed on the computer in the Primary drive, but how do I inlcude it in the GRUB boot menu or boot it at all?

I have an external HDD from which I would like to dual boot Linux Mint, with Windows Vista (64 Bit) remaining on the primary internal HDD. View 2 Replies View RelatedThe problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

-used the override feature that gives a bootlist at splash screen but cd drive not listed so I assume the cd is not recognised as a boot disk
-tried the usb/cd maker that comes with in the rar but its looking for the cd image...an .iso file, but I can't find one in folder.
ubuntu says I can run a trial from the cd alongside vista but when I open the executable it just offers intall, no try and if selected starts to install I think I can do the partition thing if I have to but I don't want any vista running on my machine.
Ive created two RAID0 partitions on my drives, a 500GB and a 60GB. Im trying to install Ubuntu on the smaller partition (ive already put Win 7 on the larger one) and every time when i get right to the last part of installation it says Grub couldnt be installed. "the grub package failed to install in arget......."
