General :: Installation - GRUB Geom Error - Trying To Install ?

Oct 13, 2010

Tried installing Linux (Red Hat 5) along with Windows 7. I created a new partition (10 GB in size) and used it for the Linux installation. After install, I was getting GRUB geom error and my system wasn't booting.

After a few tries I had to format my entire hard disk and run fixmbr which came up with the following warning message: A new MBR will be created and some of the partition may become inaccessible

Now, even though I have gotten back Windows, the Linux partition is not at all visible. (Seems like the warning message has become a reality as that partition looks like has become inaccessible.)

My new hard disk capacity has also reduced by 10 GB and it is not showing up using any software.

How can I recover that inaccessible partition?

I tried fdisk via Linux Rescue disk. Got an error 22, the details as follows:

No luck booting in Windows.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Geom Error After 10.04 Upgrade / Resolve This?

May 22, 2010

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. Previously, I had a dual booting system where GRUB allowed me to boot 9.10 or WinXP. I have two hard drives - an 80 GB drive with XP and a 1 TB drive with Ubuntu.

During the upgrade I chose to upgrade my GRUB version. I only selected to install grub on the Ubuntu drive. I didn't work - I couldn't even get GRUB to load. It just gave the error: the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found.

So I reconfigured GRUB and installed it on both drives. Now GRUB loads and I can boot 10.04 just fine, but I can no longer boot XP.

What command should I run to give you a glimpse of my system? Would that help diagnose this?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error 15 On New Install Of 10.4 LTS

Jan 3, 2011

I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to the 10.4 LTS from 8.10. Did a complete fresh install and chose to automatically clean off the drive and install the new system from scratch.I have three hard drives with the system on the smaller 40GB and the other two drives are 500GB and 2TB.

From what I can tell my problem probably stems from having the older Grub 0.97 on the system on another drive, but I can't seem to figure out how to purge it. When I mount the partitions, there is no /boot folder... The following is the output from the Boot Info Script:

Code:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in
partition #1 for /boot/grub.

Installation :: Grub Error 17 After Fresh Install

Jan 27, 2010

I have an odd problem. I custom-built a workstation:
MSI Speedster 1 mobo
2x Opteron 2352
4x DDR2 ECC 4GB
3x 150GB WD Raptor, hardware RAID 0
1x 2TB WD Green, standalone

I had Linux Mint 8 installed, but before putting the machine to real use decided to toss Windows 7 on there to see how it worked. Now I am attempting to put Mint 8 back on to get everything set up. There have been no hardware changes since I had Mint installed before.

I can successfully install, but when I reboot I get a Grub error 17. The partition table looks like:
50GB / ext4
400GB /home ext4
...
2TB /backup /ext3

Grub is installed to (hd0), which is the 450GB hardware RAID. It does not make a difference when I run the installation (and then reboot) with the 2TB drive disconnected. Thinking maybe the new ext4 format was messing with Grub, I tried:
200MB /boot ext2
50GB / ext4
400GB /home ext4
And installed again and rebooted. No dice. I'd guess Grub has issues recognizing the hardware raid, except it worked before

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error: Unknown Filesystem And Grub Error: No Such Disc

Nov 23, 2010

I have a dual boot system with ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7. Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Loading Error When Install 9.10?

Jan 8, 2010

I went through the procedure to install Ubuntu 9.10 alongside Windows XP. The installation completed without complaint. But when I reboot the PC I get the error message "Grub loading error: no such partition...". and the keyboard is dead. I am using a Sony vaio PCG-FR215H laptop on which I have fitted new HDD and CD-drive. I carried out the installation by first booting up a live version of Ubuntu on a USB thumb drive and then clicking on the 'install Ubuntu' icon on the Live Ubuntu desktop. (I coudn't use a Live CD to install as this fails for some reason). I regained use of Windows XP on the PC by booting with a Windows 95 boot floppy and typing "fdisk /mbr". So, does anyone know what might have cased this grub error? Also, are there ways to try and fix the problem manually. I.e. can I get a copy of good versions of the files that are likely corrupted and then replace the stuff that I will have written over when I did the "fdisk /mbr"?

Jan 27, 2010

I have a dual boot machine (Win XP + Ubuntu 9.10 on separate physical drives) which was working fine. I now want to replace the Ubuntu 9.10 with LinuxMCE which is based on Ubuntu 8.10. Using the LinuxMCE install disk, I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 over the top of Ubuntu 9.10 (repartitioning the whole drive). On reboot, I now get a Grub "no such disk" error. Ubuntu Installation :: Error Message: The Grub Package Failed To Install Into /target

Oct 2, 2010

I was trying to install ubuntu 9.10 as a dual boot system with windows and I recieved this error message: The Grub package failed to install into /target/. Without the Grub boot loader, the installed system will not boot

This Error comes up after 94% of the install. I also cannot seem to get the side by side install option to work (sometimes this option appears sometimes it does not) I am not sure but I beleive seome of the install files have been placed on the hard drive because I only get the option now to install on the hard drive and totally wipe clean or the emptiest hard drive. So how would I get the possible Ubuntu install off the Hard drive. I have used this CD to Install before it has no scratches therefore should work. Also If I have Win Xp on a Raid 0 will the Ubuntu 9.10 install ?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04.1 Install Fails To Boot -> Error: Out Of Disk, Grub Rescue

Jul 13, 2011

Downloaded Ubuntu 10.04.1 Desktop AMD64, tried to install it to a cleand HDD using the whole HDD, i.e. gave it permission to use the whole HDD. Installation process appeared to run OK but when it came to the restart it just fired up the message

error: out of disk
grub rescue>

I've searched this forum and found numerous references to these error messages but cannot make head nor tail of the diagnostic suggestions. Apart from anything else they suggest strings of command lines which I don't understand and can't enter anyway since they don't correspond to my keyboard layout (if I hit > or ) something completely different appears on the screen). Is there someone here who can provide a step-by-step solution in lay language ? Or is there such a thing as a bootable file which can be downloaded and inserted into my CD drive to correct this problem ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub - Setup: Warning: Attempting To Install GRUB To A Partition Instead Of The MBR - Install - Lvm - Luks - Raid - Karmic Server

Mar 27, 2010

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]

If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.

Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'

Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

General :: Error - Unknown Filesystem. Grub Rescue> - No Longer Have The Install Disk For Windows Vista

May 11, 2011

error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>

Background: My mother's HP laptop had Ubuntu and Vista on it, Ubuntu my brother's doing. He decided he wanted to take off Ubuntu yesterday (he had forgotten the password), and deleted the partition that it was contained within. The computer now boots to this error.

Inventory: We no longer have the install disk for Windows Vista, he cannot tell me what version he used of Ubuntu, what partition it was on, any of the specs for the machine, or generally any information about the system. All I am aware of is that error on the boot-up screen. I have nothing else to work with.

I would like to remove Grub, and Ubuntu, and leave Windows intact (the request of the owner of the computer), but I have no idea what commands I could use to get rid of either when I can't access Windows, or how to properly remove them if I did access Windows.

Fedora Installation :: GRUB Error - Error - No Such Disk

Dec 22, 2009

I'm trying to install Fedora for the first time on my Desktop. Unfortunately, upon restart once the installation is complete I get the following error:

Code:

This is from Fedora 12 x86_64 DVD. I presume that this obviously has to do with my disk selection during partitioning, during which I deselcted the two drives that I didn't want to be part of the install and left the one that I did selected. I also selected "use entire disk". The drive had copies of both Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, which I expect were wiped out during install.

I know that the details are sparse...but that's all I did. I'm happy to go back into the installer to retreive any necessary information that may be needed/to reinstall.

Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message

error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.
