Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Grub Set Up Again After Reinstalling Windows XP?

Apr 18, 2010

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP and as usual it destroyed my grub setup. I have done this before, so I simply booted from a live CD and typed this in the terminal:

Code:
sudo grub
> root (hd0,2)
> setup(hd0)
> quit

Now, the problem with it this time is that in the past in these situations I had only Ubuntu Feisty and Windows XP installed on my machine. But I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a separate partition (retaining the old 7.04 installation separately) since I last had to reinstall XP. Doing the above procedure restores my grub sttings to my pre-9.04 installation (i.e. I only get Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows XP in the grub menu).

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstalling Grub Fails After Windows 7?

I previously had a single 160gb drive with two partitions, dual booted for Ubuntu and XP. I then installed a new SSD drive and put Windows 7 on it and of course I lost grub on the MBR. I have gone through this before so I went ahead and booted the livd CD, installed grub then ran

root (hd0,1)
setup (hd0)

but then got these errors;

Error 22: No such partition

Ubuntu :: Recover Grub2 After Reinstalling Windows 7?

Feb 28, 2011

I am trying to recover Grub2 after reinstalling Windows 7 on my computer (which always takes over everything). I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.10 image from here and have mounted the image using the given instructions.

After restarting my computer, changing the boot order, etc., the computer reboots and hangs at "Verifying DMI Pool Data............" I have done everything correctly, so what exactly is causing this problem? Should I restore Grub2 in some different way, then?

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstalling Grub2 - Wipe Out Partitions

I am having trouble reinstalling grub so That I can see both my linux and windows partitions in the cain loader. Originally I had ubuntu, then I installed window, this wiped out grub so I had to reinstate it, and that went ok. Then I tried to get fancy and install another Linux on my machine. It did not wipe out my partitions but is defunct I have been following these instructions, [URL]

To no success. Grub2 installs fine, sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/(my part ion) /dev/sda2 and I install it to sda2, but the" Installation finished. No error reported. This is the contents of the device map /boot/grub/device.map. Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect, fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'. (hd0) /dev/sda"

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub-probe Mapping Error In GRUB2

Jan 6, 2010

I am having trouble upgrading from old grub to grub-pc. I have a clean install of 9.10 on a system with a new ASUS motherboard with Nvidia RAID configured as RAID 0.Although I read the page on SATA pseudo-RAID, this doesn't seem to apply, as both 9.10 and Windows XP installed cleanly without any additional drivers required.I did notice that contrary to the documentation, 9.10 installed with grub v0.97, not the new one as claimed. It is working fine, but just to be ornery, I'm trying to upgrade to the new one, and this is where I ran into trouble.Whenever I try to run grub-upgrade, I get an error from grub-probe that 'no mapping exists for' my raid partition. Apparently grub-probe can deal with the device, but not with the fs_uuid, as follows:

twescott@latitude:~$ sudo grub-probe -t device /boot/grub
/dev/mapper/nvidia_fcacbeib5
twescott@latitude:~$ sudo grub-probe -t fs_uuid /boot/grub
grub-probe: error: no mapping exists for `nvidia_fcacbeib5'

The system seems to be recognizing the RAID with no problems, as in:

twescott@latitude:~$ sudo blkid
/dev/mapper/nvidia_fcacbeib1: UUID="28D83EB2D83E7DDE" TYPE="ntfs"
/dev/mapper/nvidia_fcacbeib2: UUID="4344165e-07c3-4da6-b640-da9bf964a74e" TYPE="swap"
/dev/sda: TYPE="nvidia_raid_member"

[code]....

I'm thinking the problem may be in my grub device.map file, which only lists the SATA raw device aliases, but I may be completely wrong:

twescott@latitude:~$ cat /boot/grub/device.map
(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb

Ubuntu :: Reinstalling Win 7 Still Getting GRUB Error

I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Fedora :: Restoring Grub After Reinstalling Windows?

Aug 4, 2010

My Windows installation had a problem and I had to reinstall Windows. The problem now is that I need to get grub back so that I can boot into Fedora. I'm using a Fedora 11 LiveCD I had sitting around. Here are the results of the command most of the way down the first page:

Quote:

Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 32301 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000f09ab

I'm tempted to try the grub-install command quoted near the end of the thread, but I don't want to do anything that will hose the system.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Cannot Boot Windows 7 (error 0xc0000225)

Jul 2, 2011

I have Lucid installed on a computer. I added a second drive, installed Windows 7. Windows 7 boots fine if it is the only drive connected, or it is selected as the boot drive in the BIOS. I booted into Lucid, ran 'sudo update-grub' and it found the Windows 7 install on the second disk. When I try to use that Grub entry to boot Windows 7, I get this error screen:

Code:

Windows Boot Manager Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disk and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: BootBCD
Status: 0xc0000225
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

I seem to remember in the Grub 1.x days there was a map command that would 'swap' the drives so Windows would think it was the boot drive, but the Grub2 autogenerated command doesn't have anything like that.how to get Grub2 to boot Windows 7?

Ubuntu :: Grub Error 15 - Reinstalling WinXP - Umpteen Installations And It Keeps Crashing

Apr 8, 2010

My set up is internal hard drive Windows 7, external Ubuntu Karmic. The reason I have it this way, despite Linux being my main OS, is because my internal hard drive is 6 years old and half the capacity of my external new one. Have tried quite a few set ups with various Linux platforms, but have finally settled on above. As yet, I don't know Linux or Ubuntu all that well. Getting somewhere, but it's a steep learning curve.

Because of constant errors reinstalling WinXP - umpteen installations and it keeps crashing - the problems are with security updates and SP3 - I finally bit the bullet and intalled Win 7. I only need Windows for a few essential programs or I'd happily never look at it again, so it filled me with horror doing this, but I couldn't take the crashes any more. So, today, Win 7 installs just nicely. However, I can no longer boot my external Ubuntu hard drive. The error is, 'Grub loading stage 1.5... Grub loading please wait... Error 15'. I load up the live cd, but when I try to follow instructions given to other people with Error 15 (editing files, accessing root) I don't have permissions.

I have a dual boot config with

sda1 /boot
sda2 Win7

sda4 Truecrypt Partition

i have grub1 working and chaonloading truecrypt loader if i choose "win7" in grub1 menu I want to install a new kubuntu (no upgrade) I have read that that there are problems with grub2 and truecrypt actually a bug that grub2 dont chainloads truecrypt boot loader many ppl seem to have problems with grub2 then i read somewhere that ubuntu install is not asking for grub2 to be installed and just installing it. is this right?

i think at least for the alternative install cd its wrong. i installed it on another pc and it asked me! it works for win7 and Ubuntu and i guess its grub2 but there is no truecrypt installed anyway, i wanted to ask is the live cd installer asks me for grub2 and what is the best and easiest way to stay with my grub and just change the menu.lst to the new kernel (i guess there will be one)

I boot to the live CD, run the install process, resize and partition my free space as an ext4 primary partition with mount point /. Everything installs except grub, so I'm always booting in to windows. This seems to be a bit off as I've never had this occur with dual booting before.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot Into Xubuntu After Reinstalling Windows

Jan 5, 2010

I've re-installed Windows and now can't boot xubuntu 9.1. I've looked at: [URL]. I did the the fdisk -l and tried mounting each of the partitions but I couldn't mount sda4 which I think is the partition that my xubuntu is located on. A clue that this is the partition is that it is the only one of type extended as I saw in gparted. It was also the only one apart from sda5 that I wasn't able to mount and sda5 I think was an old USB partition. Anything else I could try or are you going to need the output of "fdisk -l" to get a fuller picture.
