Ubuntu Security :: Terminal Does Not Let Enter PASSWORD

Jul 31, 2010

The terminal does not let me enter PASSWORD (or anything else) for SUDO prompt. My password still works to boot up and for syntactic. Surely changing terminal background color from purple to green did not cause this.

While trying to find an Open Office document I stupidly lost, I meandered around to LOST & FOUND "You (me) are not the owner, so you can not change these permissions. Does this relate to password problem?

OpenSUSE :: Require A User To Enter Password To Open Terminal?

Sep 21, 2010

I'm in the process of configuring a "guest" account for houseguests tose my computer. I've got the file permissions set, but I'd also like to restrict their access to the terminal. It seems to me that most of the damage that can be done to a computer goes through the terminal.I downloaded Pessulus (I use Gnome)but it doesn't require a password. the profiled user can just open Pessulus and alter their profile -- what's the point? Is there a way I can require a user to enter a password, either for any terminal or Pessulus?I like Pessulus -- it's concise and easy to use. But it doesn't seem very secure as I understand it.

I cannot force reboot, cannot shutdown, cannot run, cannot enter terminal, nothing. Totally helpless. Only physical reboot do the work. Never had this issue before.

Debian Installation :: No Network-Manager - Pull Up The Terminal And Enter A Command To Start?

Sep 1, 2011

I downloaded Debian Stable last night, and everything appear to go smoothly. Today, I booted up the new OS to try it out for the first time. As I was exploring a few of the features, I decided to pull up a web browser. No internet connection.

No big deal, I thought, as I searched around for a way to connect wirelessly. I couldn't find a way to do so. I consulted one of my more Linux savvy friends, who advised me to pull up the terminal and enter a command to start the network-manager. According to the terminal, no such file currently exists on my system.

This is a bit of a conundrum for me, since I am on my university campus with no ethernet cord to attempt a direct connection. Is there any way to get the network-manager onto my computer? Also, did I mess up somewhere in the installation, or did someone not package the file with CD1 for some unknown reason?

General :: Start Up Gnome Desktop From Remote Terminal?

Jul 27, 2009

I looked around for threads addressing this issue and some have come close to answering it, but I have yet to see a definitive yes or no. Anyway - Here's my issue:

Background:
I can SSH into my home computer (Ubuntu 9.04 running Gnome) from work (Win XP Pro) using RealVNC via Putty tunnels. This has been working flawlessly for me for awhile now. I was messing around in the terminal window and accidentally rebooted the linux box (home computer) while I was at work. No big deal I thought. So I re-start the Putty connection, and it is back up in no time. Then I try to start the VNC connection, and no go, connection refused. I remember seeing that in order for the VNC connection to work, I had to be logged into the Gnome desktop already on the Ubuntu box.

Question:
Is it possible to log in and start up a Gnome desktop session from the terminal command line in Putty so I can get the VNC connection back?

General :: Bash Will Not Allow To Enter Tcsh?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm so lost it's difficult to even pose my question. My default shell is bash; and I'd like [actually, required to] have the ability to type csh and enter the TC shell...but it's not working at all. All the changes I made to the ~/.bashrc file work great, but I can't seem to access tcsh to see if the commands in my ~/.tcshrc file work.

When I type "csh", my old PS1 [prompt] displays and I have to type "exit" to get back to the one in the bashrc file and then type "bye" to log out off the system.

I've spent the last 3 days researching this, but every article/blog/site discusses permanently changing my log in...NOT going to happen.
