Succeeded in connecting to internet using my wll phone. I can now connect using 'wvdial' command in root terminal. But I want to connect through terminal. I tried 'sudo wvdial' command. Then I am asked for my password. But I cannot type my password there. When I type, nothing appears on the terminal window. Ofcourse there's no problem with my keyboard.

recently had to reinstall ubuntu 9.10....after all the updates & changes i made in synaptic and some restarts, i wanted to proceed in installing my nvidia drivers, so i stopped gdm and attempted to login as root, but it would not let me. it's strange because i created the root account password prior to this.
so, issuing the command to restart gdm brought me to the login window. after logging in, the screen remains in the login splash and a small terminal appears in the upper left corner. can't seem to get gnome started up.

I downloaded Debian Stable last night, and everything appear to go smoothly. Today, I booted up the new OS to try it out for the first time. As I was exploring a few of the features, I decided to pull up a web browser. No internet connection.
No big deal, I thought, as I searched around for a way to connect wirelessly. I couldn't find a way to do so. I consulted one of my more Linux savvy friends, who advised me to pull up the terminal and enter a command to start the network-manager. According to the terminal, no such file currently exists on my system.
This is a bit of a conundrum for me, since I am on my university campus with no ethernet cord to attempt a direct connection. Is there any way to get the network-manager onto my computer? Also, did I mess up somewhere in the installation, or did someone not package the file with CD1 for some unknown reason?

I just installed ecryptfs (debian Lenny). However, when I try to run it (as normal user), I get the following
$ ecryptfs-setup-private Enter your login passphrase: And it wont accept any password (naturally since this is the first time I'm running it).

I have installed the new phpMyadmin3.4.1 on a server running Ubuntu 9.10 with apache and mysql. It runs on php5.2.10The apache config seems fine as the virtual directory that I configured works fine. http://<ip-of-server>/phpmyadminlink works. The home page is displayed. But when I enter the user name and password, instead of logging into the console, it again redirects me to the index page of the site. There are no errors displayed. I have checked that cookies on browser are enabled. The server is hosted on amazon web services, if that makes any difference

I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.

Debian 8/Cinnamon fresh install. /home is being shared with two other OS's, Mint and openSUSE. At the login screen I enter my user name and password and the screen blacks for 1-2 seconds and comes back asking for user name and password. I can login as root. As root I can launch the Group & Users GUI and attempt to set the user's password, and pressing the 'change' button does nothing obvious.
I can set the user's password in a terminal, which reports success. I tried to switch users and login with the changed password and I get the same failure. If I try to login with the original password I get an incorrect password error, suggesting that the password is being processed properly and the problem is elsewhere.
On previous installs with Mate and the default desktop (Gnome) I didn't have this problem. So, the questions are: Is it Cinnamon? Is it an unlucky chance bad install? Config files are typically in /home, which is being shared with Mate and KDE, is this the problem?

Today I upgraded my system to the Nvidia driver 340.93 and 4.2.0-1 kernel on Debian Stretch.
While I wait for the gnome login screen to pop up I get the "Oh no something has gone wrong" message.
When I log in from another terminal and execute startx , gnome initiates and starts although settings like my resolution and other xserver settings are not loaded.
From the journalctl I believe the error is located in the following section:
Code: Select allOct 06 14:23:17 DEBIAN-PC org.a11y.atspi.Registry[1692]: SpiRegistry daemon is running with well-known name - org.a11y.atspi.Registry
Oct 06 14:23:17 DEBIAN-PC gnome-session[1680]: X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Oct 06 14:23:17 DEBIAN-PC gnome-session[1680]: Major opcode of failed request: 154 (GLX)
[Code] ....
I reinstalled the xorg-xserver and the nvidia drivers and I get the same behavior.
Looking for some info in order to reconfigure the gnome-session to work?

I am running a Java application on the command line bash terminal under Mint Debian. I have JDK1.6.0_22 installed 64-bit, and the OS is 64-bit too. I have a few JAR files in the directory and a few native LWJGL libraries. When I run the application using the command line, all works fine.
Lets assume my directory where the files are is called /home/riz/MyGame. I change to that directory and this is the command I use code...

The terminal does not let me enter PASSWORD (or anything else) for SUDO prompt. My password still works to boot up and for syntactic. Surely changing terminal background color from purple to green did not cause this.
While trying to find an Open Office document I stupidly lost, I meandered around to LOST & FOUND "You (me) are not the owner, so you can not change these permissions. Does this relate to password problem?

difference b/w a login shell and a non-login shell ?
I know that when we use su - <username> we are getting a login shell & when we use su <user-name> we are getting a non-login shell.
Do we get any additional privileges when we have a login shell compared to a non-login shell ?

I'm in the process of configuring a "guest" account for houseguests tose my computer. I've got the file permissions set, but I'd also like to restrict their access to the terminal. It seems to me that most of the damage that can be done to a computer goes through the terminal.I downloaded Pessulus (I use Gnome)but it doesn't require a password. the profiled user can just open Pessulus and alter their profile -- what's the point? Is there a way I can require a user to enter a password, either for any terminal or Pessulus?I like Pessulus -- it's concise and easy to use. But it doesn't seem very secure as I understand it.

Two or three times on a daily basis it just freezes and I do not know why. For example, I am doing some minor coding, surfing the web and just some regular stuff and suddenly, out of nowhere, it just freezes. I cannot force reboot, cannot shutdown, cannot run, cannot enter terminal, nothing. Totally helpless. Only physical reboot do the work. Never had this issue before.

Everyone is wondering why we can't run gEdit and other tools from a terminal by logging in as root(e.g"su-"), I understand that by making changes they are trying to force us as users of Linux to learn better habits that are more secure, but the issues are driving people nuts!
I for one really like being able to log as root and open gEdit to make drive changes without having to login as root, I would normally still have access to all my things like email etc. So changing Linux to force everyone to not use tools like gEdit as root is becoming more of an inconvenience than they realize, there must be a safe way to do this!

I've noticed on other Linux distributions that after boot up and logging off the console screen clears and provides basic information like the Linux distribution and then under it the login prompt. How can I do this for openSUSE 11.3?After I install or reboot I still have all the boot up stuff shown and when I logout after performing some work my commands are still shown. I boot the system to runlevel 3 and barely use the GUI but would like the screen to clear everything after boot up and logging out.

I put
Code:
echo -e 'e[0;34m'
into /etc/profile, but it still doesn't work until I login. I'd like it to work before that, so that all messages (like those displayed on boot up) have these default settings.

Some of your private key files are encrypted for security reasons. In order to read them you have to provide us with the pass phrases. Server your.server.com:55 (RSA)
Enter pass phrase:
Server www.blahblahblah.com:55(RSA)
Enter pass phrase:
How to login ?
The cursor is blinking but I am unable to enter the pass phrase; the only thing I can do is press the power button to shutdown. Even if I leave the PC running for a hour I can't type anything.
I know how to resolve the problem if I am able to login.

I have several files in the laptop that need to be saved, if not I probably just clean install it.

This must've been done before: I want to keep a log file open in terminal so I can monitor updates to it as they occur. My searches are coming up with everything but this situation... I must be missing some terminology or something key, because people do this all the time inside of other programs (NetBeans, or rails server, for example).
