I have added a Latvian keyboard layout to my Ubuntu 9.10 system (Russian as the system language). I cannot type Latvian letters with diacritical marks. I chose an apostrophe-based keyboard layout, so that I get the letter I need by pressing an apostrophe before. For example, to get ā, I would press 'a.The problem is, when I press ' followed by a letter or space bar, nothing appears on the screen. I continue typing as normal, but each time I press an apostrophe, the next character I press displays nothing on the screen. I have tried installing a Latvian language pack through System -> Administration -> Language Support. It was generally a useful addition. But it did not solve the problem. I still could not type Latvian. After that, I tried removing the Latvian layout from settings and adding it again. It did not help. I tried removing the layout, restarting my computer, and adding the layout back. The problem was not resolved.
I have tried different Lativan layouts (with tilde, with F, and standard). I had the same problem regardless of the layout I used. I browsed dozens of forum threads, and in one of them I found a workaround for this problem. For example, to type �, I hold down Shift and Control together, and while holding them press u0160 (because 0160 is a hex code for � in the character map). The first 0 is not significant, so to save time I type u160. I looked up the hex codes for the letters I need in Applications -> Accessories -> Character Map. In that application, at the bottom of the window, for each letter there is a code U+(four hex digits) e.g. U+012A. I wrote out all the codes I need on a small paper slip and stuck it to my monitor.Entering symbols this way is rather inconvenient. But at least it is possible.How to enter Latvian letters using just a Latvian keyboard layout? Is it a bug I should file? Would be great to find out.
I am pasting sudo commands without problems as a user (ales in my case) and then immediately the ask the user password.
The keyboard seems to be dead, no keys work, not allowing me to enter the password.
Succeeded in connecting to internet using my wll phone. I can now connect using 'wvdial' command in root terminal. But I want to connect through terminal. I tried 'sudo wvdial' command. Then I am asked for my password. But I cannot type my password there. When I type, nothing appears on the terminal window. Ofcourse there's no problem with my keyboard.

Here's the situation: I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix on my Acer Aspire One (didn't want it, but got it for free). I installed and am dual booting it with windows 7 basic. Both worked fine until this morning when the laptop ran out of battery and shut down.Now, on start up, the BIOS screen flashes, and its not the same BIOS screen, but I can't tell what it says, its moving too fast, the laptop then restarts. This problem may be bigger than the linux part of it
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been having a problem in Ubuntu 9.10 recently where starting about 2 minutes after startup my computer slows down and becomes unresponsive. I believe the problem is associated with a high IOWait because I have the system monitor applet on my Gnome Panel and it displays 100% IOWait every time my system starts to slow down. I have tried booting into other kernel version and the problem persists. I don't really know what IOWait is or how to diagnose this problem further. I've looked around online and it seems like you have to find a specific process that is causing the IOWait, but I don't understand how to go about doing that.

View 8 Replies View RelatedIt happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

If you do the '&' sign with conky it still gives output, also the conky -d command gives output...

Googling this problem seems to indicate that it may be a problem with graphics drivers.I've tried commands such as "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" and "startx" which I found through googling the problem, but neither of these did any good. I also tried reinstalling Ubuntu, but the problem didn't go away.I can still boot into Windows so it's not the end of the world, but I'd like to get Ubuntu working.

Two or three times on a daily basis it just freezes and I do not know why. For example, I am doing some minor coding, surfing the web and just some regular stuff and suddenly, out of nowhere, it just freezes. I cannot force reboot, cannot shutdown, cannot run, cannot enter terminal, nothing. Totally helpless. Only physical reboot do the work. Never had this issue before.

I had added "cd /home/myname" to the end of .bashrc, and this worked well as a temporary fix, but was never necessary in Karmic. Furthermore, modifying .bashrc in this way renders Nautilus' "Open in Terminal" menu item useless, as it still opens the home directory instead of the folder Nautilus was viewing.

After the installation was completed I installed chrome and Mathematica ( by using the terminal ). I then restarted the computer. When I restarted ubuntu again I realized that I couldn't type on the Terminal any longer.I can type on anything else, documents, browsers, Mathematica ecc, but, as soo as I try to type over the terminal the mouse pointer disappears and nothing happens. However I can copy paste on the terminal but it is of no use since I cannot use the enter key.

For instance, I'd like to be able to find all JPEG files in my filesystem, even if their names don't end in .jp*. It would be helpful to be able to combine this with other tests in find, so that I could type something like "sudo find / -atime 0 -size +1M -type adobeflash" or something like that.
I've looked for ways to hook find up to file and tinkered around with a few ideas involving pipes, but nothing seems to get what I want.
It installed but I cant seem to run a scan and as there isnt much need for it i want to remove it. The problem is its changed name from what I downloaded it as. Does anyone know what it could be? Ill try and add a pic a bit later, but im on windows at the moment so I cant acces terminal. Also I have Wine installed but would like to remove its root access, Im not sure if it does have root access but I would like it not to if it does, what should I type into the terminal?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and I've been running into a bizarre scenario. So when I open a terminal, I can type commands into it. Then I open a tab (by pressing Ctrl+Shift+T) and can type into it normally as well. But when I close the tab (going back to the original terminal), I suddenly can't type into that terminal -- no characters appear on its command line. It is not a severe issue since if I jump to another window (say Firefox), then come back to that terminal, I can suddenly type again. Also as far as I know this seems to be the only scenario to which this problem occurs. Has anyone ran into the same issue?
