General :: Start Up Gnome Desktop From Remote Terminal?
Jul 27, 2009
I looked around for threads addressing this issue and some have come close to answering it, but I have yet to see a definitive yes or no. Anyway - Here's my issue:
Background:
I can SSH into my home computer (Ubuntu 9.04 running Gnome) from work (Win XP Pro) using RealVNC via Putty tunnels. This has been working flawlessly for me for awhile now. I was messing around in the terminal window and accidentally rebooted the linux box (home computer) while I was at work. No big deal I thought. So I re-start the Putty connection, and it is back up in no time. Then I try to start the VNC connection, and no go, connection refused. I remember seeing that in order for the VNC connection to work, I had to be logged into the Gnome desktop already on the Ubuntu box.
Question:
Is it possible to log in and start up a Gnome desktop session from the terminal command line in Putty so I can get the VNC connection back?

In KDE's Konsole, I can do the following from the terminal:
dcop kwin KWinInterface currentDesktop
And it will tell me which desktop my terminal is connected to ( per [URL])
How can I determine what desktop number the current gnome terminal in a gnome session is connected to?

I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.
My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.
My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.
I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc
And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.
No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.
I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.

I've set up home server, which doesn't have to be as powerful as other servers, so I decided to install GUI because of applications that are alternatives to classical GUI applications in headless version requires more skill/knowledge. However, I don't want server to run GUI always at start (which gnome-desktop package does). I need some configuration in KDE/gnome/xfce (haven't decided) that doesn't start GUI after each start (e.g is required to type startx or equivalent command to start GUI)(off topic: can you also recommend good remote-administration with GUI transport ?)

I have a real newbie question. I want to edit my disk partition table. Mount some drives etc. I like gui tools and gnome's disk utility seems to be able to do everything I want to. My problem: When I want to create a new filesystem on an empty space, I'm not allowed to. I guess I need root access, but I can't login as root to my gnome session and I know no way to start the disk utility from a terminal where I'm the root user, so my question is: How do I do this?

For some reason my gnome-terminal is starting in / when it should be ~ I have checked /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc and /etc/passwd and everything seems fine as far as i can tell Konsole and xterm are starting up with the working dir to my home dir (as set by /etc/passwd) But im at a loss to see where gnome-terminal is starting in / if i enter cd with no argumants in gnome-terminal it is switching to ~ fine, so i dont think its mistaking my home dir for /

Opensuse 11.4 and Gnome
I cannot get x11vnc to start via ssh. I keep running in to this MIT magic cookie.
I have tried the -findauth and -auth guess but I am told .Xauthority is not set.
ps wwaux | grep auth which worked for me under KDE does not help.
I am using x11vnc so that I can export the active seesion :0

I just installed Debian 8 and ran vnc4server. I want to get Gnome on a client computer so I read some threads on the internet telling me to edit the ~/.vnc/xstartup file, which I did. Unfortunately I've tried multiple edits of this file and I cannot get it to work properly. Any working script of what it should look like for the latest stable version of Debian?

I have an ssh question that I have not been able to figure out.
I am sitting in front of computer A on computer B I would like to start mplayer and have it display a movie on computer B's screen. I think a better question might be how do I start a gui application and the Desktop on a remote computer threw ssh.

I installed gnome 3.0 through the one installer, and now every time I start kde I get a gnome terminal that says
Code:
** (orca:4321): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowState' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'
** (orca:4321): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowActions' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'
** (orca:4321): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowMoveResizeMask' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'
It keeps shrinking everytime I try to expand it a bit, I had to edit > select all and copy to be able to read it. And it sounds like it's trying to play a sound that sounds like welcome, but it gets cut off, it also makes a sound when closing it. I'm assuming this was supposed to be a first time run thing for gnome but it keeps showing up in kde.

I'm trying to use Gnome's built in remote desktop viewer, Vino, to remote to my PC. When I use the vnc client on another computer to get to my OpenSuse 11.1 box, it lets me type in a password and pauses. If I look at the screen on my OpenSuse box it is waiting for the gnome keyring password and it wanting it for vino-preferences. It specifically says: The application gnome remote desktop (/usr/bin/vino-preferences) wants access to the default keyring but it is locked.
Does anybody know how to bypass needing the password for this? I'm not sure how to begin to figure this out. I've been a longtime Fedora user and vino worked fine there so I don't think this is the way it is supposed to work.

How can I start the GNOME terminal logged in directly as root? I would be interested in a panel launcher, or a launcher in the applications menu.
My distribution is Fedora 11 x86_64.

Is there a way gnome can allow a remote desktop / VNC connection if no user is logged in? If the server gets rebooted I can't access it (remote desktop / VNC). Someone physically has to go there and log in. Surely there must be a way as gnome is running just waiting for a login.

I've tried to access the console in vain. Every time I try to, I get this message
Quote:
Cannot start gnome-terminal -t R1 -e 'telnet 127.0.0.1 2000' > /dev/nul/2>&1 &:No such file or directory
Then i decided to use the xterm client instead. But still didn't work
Quote:
Cannot start xterm -T R1 -e 'telnet 127.0.0.1 2000' >/dev/null 2>&1 &: No such file or directory
The last option I had was using Kconsole (linux kde) but still it doesn't work. And i get the same error message
Quote:
Cannot start /usr/lib/kde4/bin/konsole --new-tab -p tabtitle=R1 -e telnet 127.0.0.1 2000 >/dev/null 2>&1 &: No such file or directory

I was just wondering if this was possible without using guake or yakuake or the like: I have a shortcut (alt+shift+c) to open a gnome-terminal window. (done via compiz keyboard commands)However, what if I wanted it to fokus a gnome-terminal (specific?) if one(it) exists and only start a new terminal, if it isn't already running? I looked up and down the compiz settings, not seeing anything to help me focus a specific window.

Although I have been using Ubuntu for a while, I am still a beginner. This is the second time that it has happened to me and I am unable to find a possible solution in my books on Linux and Ubuntu.Twice I have downloaded updates from Update Manager which required a reboot. Each time I have rebooted, terminal window has opened. I am unable to get out of terminal to the desktop or to enter any other program ( like office, etc). I know that the graphics are still in place as The Ubuntu 10.10 screen flashes on before the terminal black screen appears.(I am in runlevel 2 )A. How can I get out of terminal and onto desktop?

I am at a loss. I can not access my work remote desktop via the terminal server client on my wired box running Ubuntu 10.10. My wireless laptop is able to connect right away once I established the VPN connection. The VPN connection is established on both boxes with no problems.
When I tried the Terminal Server Client on my wired boxed, it says it can not establish a connection. Yet my wireless box gets connected immediately!
I check the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and the /etc/resolv.conf to see if there were any differences, but they are essentially the same. When I have the vpnc connection, they both recognize it and I am able to ping the IP address shown when I do a "ifconfig" on the terminal.
What can be the problem? Anything I need to configure on a wired computer versus a wireless one? What else can I check?

Every time I start Ubuntu, I set up an ssh session to a server. In order to automate this I made an entry in startup programs like this:/usr/bin/gnome-terminal -e '/usr/bin/ssh name@server.com'Nothing happens when I log in, and I've checked that the command works.

I've recently updated to Ubuntu 10.10. At first I had no problems, but after the third time I logged in, my desktop background appeared (and nothing else) but quickly flashed to a black screen with some error messages (too fast for me to see) and I got sent to the login screen. After trying some more times I got the same problem with some small differences(sometimes my desktop icons showed up, other times it took a couple of minutes before I got kicked out).
I tried running startx from the terminal but got one of these two error messages: Server already running or could not find any listening ports. If I run "sudo startx -- :1" to switch the port I login fine, but as the root user. Gnome works perfectly here and when I login in gnome-failsafe. This leads to believe it has something to do with my user configuration. I've restarted xorg server, installed gnome-main-menu and made sure if got the current gnome package.
