I would like to set a permanent, transparentmmovable terminal over my desktop background. I've tried various out-of-date guides to doing this, but all of them left me with a border around my window (I think Emerald caused this)letely mobile terminals. After installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

Up until KDE4 I could select a different image for each of the 4 virtual desktops. Now I tried Suse11.1 KDE and it seems like there is no such option. I can change the background image allright, but all 4 desktops have the SAME image.

Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?
How do you get a background image in the terminal in Lucid Lynx, the tutorials I've found is for older releases. And something have changed because I can't find that option anywere.

When I read a man page, the titles look black, so they are unreadable on the black background. The paragraph text looks fine, it's the headers (and anything that is *bold* I think) that looks wrong.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIve got my webserver linked up to my ubuntu computer, and i want it to act like a server controller (for srcds games or w/e) Basically, When i click the start button, the SSH launches 'css.sh' by doing this 'sh css.sh'... But either way, that is becides the point. When it launches i dont see the terminal window, its invisible.... (but its running) How do i see it when i go to my ubuntu desktop and how to i put more commands in it once its launched in the background.
it's really easy to launch an application using alt+f2 without having to worry about it while it's running but in terminal the window must remain open and you can't run anything else while the application is running e.g. firefox, rhythmbox. does anyone know how to run applications in the background while using terminal?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.10, and I am trying to run a java process in the background of a terminal, so I can continue to use that terminal.
Other applications will run in the background just fine, but when I run my java application, I cannot change the status of the process from "Stopped" after suspending it.

I'm currently using Ubuntu 10.10. I frequently end up opening a few terminals and it's easier to keep track of what I'm doing if the terminals have different backgrounds or are colored differently. Is there a way already made which will start up a new terminal with a background different then one that's already open? Or a way that when the terminal is opened it will start the terminal under a profile that's not yet open? That being, when I open a terminal it opens the "first" profile. Then once I try opening a new terminal it checks and finds that I already have one with the "first" profile open and so the new terminal is opened with the "second" profile.Does anything like this feature already exist? Or something like it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I type (in new 10.10) soem cmdline comands like "ls -l" then some of the directories have a different fore-and background color (e.g. black on green) while the remaining other directoreis are blue on white.
Where can I find out the meaning of the diferent colors and how can I change them?
If I go to menu
Terminal->Edit->Profile Preferences->Color
then I can set only the full overall background and foreground color. But here only certain parts have a different color. the main color (black on white) is suitable. I do not use system theme.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on 4 machines as base OS and I have many virtual machines of it also. I havent changed the terminal preferences on any of them, however on some computers the terminal background which is purple is not solid in that you can see what is in the background behind it. On others the background is truly solid purple; you can not see behind/through it.
Is there any way to change the terminal window for these machines that are displaying solid to the 'see-thru' way? Ive been using some ebooks and things and really like opening up vi/vim in the purple see-thru window that allows me to write and see the text in the background...however on some machines I can not do this because the terminal display is truly solid. ? All my computers have the same profile settings for terminal..

View 10 Replies View Relatedi have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and played around a bit and have got it booting into cli instead of the login screen. gnome is my default desktop environment but i wish to run kde along side to play around with. When i boot into kde using startx kde (usualy just using startx) all i get is a mouse, black background and a terminal screen.

I also notice that when I run a program that installs anything that screen dims (gets like this grey opacity I guess) after a period of time. After changing it, I restarted my computer, typed in my username/password and it just brought me to an image of my background with no icons or the sidebar. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 it brings me to a command prompt. Also, after the log in I get an error displaying Enter password to unlock your login keyring. After entering my password nothing happens.
