Is there any way to repair gnewsense? It was working fine but the desktop has suddenly started showing problems. I am not able to use the desktop, instead i am stuck to use only the terminal

I'm having a problem connecting to the Internet on my gNewSense installation. My Internet works fine through Ubuntu and Windows, but not through gNewSense, is there anyway of fixing this? Also, while searching around I found that somebody said I ought to type "dmesg" and copy the results.

I just installed gewsense on my dell studio xps. I have a dual boot with windows vista. Problem is I cant get the internet to work via lan or wireless. I have read it could be incompatibility with my hardware but wanted to know what can I do to troubleshoot and resolve.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Gnome desktop on Hardy Heron. My desktop nav bar (that normally is at the top) is stuck on the right. There are so many packed icons there is no place to grab the nav bar. I have removed several icons but I am getting down to the essentials. Is there an alternative way to move the nav bar that doesn't involve dragging it with my mouse pointer?
View 2 Replies View RelatedDon't know if I have a glitch or if I deleted something while dinkin' around. Anyway, I boot to the desktop and I have desktop icons but no panels at all. Alt+F2 does not work. I think CTRL+ALT+F2 gave me "run" window. "Sudo gnome-panel &" did nothing. "Init 1" gave me a "init 1" screen but I couldn't accomplish anything there for lack of know-how. Reinstalling is no big deal at all for me but I wish I could accomplish something geeky like a repair. I'm not sure of the process for using a live cd.

(I have internet access via a kiosk, and can burn a disk if necessary, but the smaller the download the better)I have a few ideas that with some help I should be able to fix the partition.1. Is there a simple way to use use grub, to mount all partitions read only and not to fsck them so I can logon in normal user and sudo and hopefully fix the parition?or 2. Download a small version of ubuntu or something that I can burn to CD (my machine cannot boot from usb) so that I can repair the machine.3. Download the ubuntu installer (alternative) and try and reinstall the necesary usr partition?

I pressed F to fix it and a while later, instead of booting like it normally would, it went to the terminal.
It asked for me to login, and when I did, it said:

I recently installed it and after getting the entire thing loaded and setup I messed up on a sound driver. Went to the LOGIN SCREEN settings and selected RECOVERY like a DOPE! Now I'm stuck in a bootup login screen that always goes to a small white terminal in the upper left corner! I've tried EVERYTHING from the forums to get back to booting into the GUIo luck! Is there a way to reset the LOGIN SCREEN to boot to Ubuntu GUI from the terminal? I really don't want to reinstall and reconfigure this whole thing again

Someone suggested a way of switching between the English and Greek desktop for Ubuntu. I tried that but it didn't work so well so I removed it. But I just tried to use the Terminal to install something and it's all in Greek!!! Now while I can read some of it my skills are not that good and I need it back in English again... Quickly actually! How do I go about removing the Greek from my terminal? Everything else on my system is in English so I can't figure why the terminal is stuck there.

I've used rEFIt and to create a dual boot system on a new MacBook Pro 7. 1 following the directions in the community forum. I can book ubuntu and mac os x fine. However, the MBR boot table shows an error in the partition map.

How can I fix this, rEFIt and gptsync are unable to repair the MBR error... Will this cause problems (since MBR shows the ubuntu boot partition overlapping the OSX partition)?
I have been trying to install the KDE desktop via terminal services, but am failing because I have forgotten the syntax. Could some one please help? I believe that I need to reinstall Grub and everything should be fine, and I remember reading the command to do this on this forum, but I can't find it. When I boot, I now get a black screen with white letters instead of the Grub boot menu. It says something about "Minimal Grub" at the top and gives me a prompt that looks like this.

I can SSH into my home computer (Ubuntu 9.04 running Gnome) from work (Win XP Pro) using RealVNC via Putty tunnels. This has been working flawlessly for me for awhile now. I was messing around in the terminal window and accidentally rebooted the linux box (home computer) while I was at work. No big deal I thought. So I re-start the Putty connection, and it is back up in no time. Then I try to start the VNC connection, and no go, connection refused. I remember seeing that in order for the VNC connection to work, I had to be logged into the Gnome desktop already on the Ubuntu box.
Question:
Is it possible to log in and start up a Gnome desktop session from the terminal command line in Putty so I can get the VNC connection back?
I Am considering adding a sound card to my system and I am open to any suggestions. I have a lot of media files and I also do some gaming.

I am having an issue with my GUI desktop display. I switched from the desktop to a virtual terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F2. Upon returning to the GUI desktop (Ctrl+Alt+F7), my display is all garbled up. I tried changing the resolutions, and it does not make a difference. I tried rebooting and the display is still bad.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI created a new Ubuntu 9.10 VM, and it installed fine. I then told it to upgrade, and was running it fullscreen and left it for several hours. Now the machine is stuck at full-screen, and Ctrl+Alt do not unstick it! I can see the mouse cursor, but cannot press Alt to bring up a menu or anything. I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a console, and logged in as root and tried to kill-9 the process, (qemu-dm), but it won't die! Any ideas on how I can unstick the VM? I have lots of applications running and transferring data now, so I don't want to reboot the box for several days until the file transfers are done.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot launch gnome-terminal from the Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal menu. However a gnome-terminal process is created (I can see it in a terminal that I happened to have open) but it doesn't seem to actually run (I have several of these terminals in the ps list now but they haven't actually run as terminals and it's been at least 2 hrs). At first I thought they weren't running at all until I checked (it looked like the Starting Terminal message at the bottom of the gnome GUI ran abnormally long and then terminated so I thought at first that they weren't running at all).
Also it looks like my gnome session is clobbering the CPU: running at or over 80% of cpu time at times (it does change but mostly it is high). All I'm doing is minor web work + updating a file in Open Office - when I noticed this I got out of Open Office and that had no effect. So it looks like application software is running (this was launched from a terminal) but running from the menu seems to result in processes with low priority (that doesn't seem right though). This just started today and my system has been mostly running correctly for a year or so (last year I got an Acer 5532 on sale, wiped it and installed Fedora 11).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to fix nautilus which is crashing, so deleted the ~/Desktop folder, thinking it would reset as in karmicnot in lucid. Now have home folder as the desktop. Tried recreating ~/Desktop, but no luck. Gconf-editor no luck either since checking or unchecking the home folder as destop does nothing. Any ideas how to fix this problem?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have tried using linux a few times, I went back to windows every single one. But I recently installed ubuntu on my laptop and I was shocked that everything worked. Sometimes I forget I am not using windows. But my ipod stopped working ok. When I connected it ubuntu started opening file manager windows, like five per seconds, in a few seconds my bar was flooded with file manager windows. I fixed the problem getting rid of my iPod, now I am using a cheapy but more stable Phillips gogear. The problem is that theres an ipod icon stuck on my desktop and I dont know how to get rid of it.
