I am having an issue with my GUI desktop display. I switched from the desktop to a virtual terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F2. Upon returning to the GUI desktop (Ctrl+Alt+F7), my display is all garbled up. I tried changing the resolutions, and it does not make a difference. I tried rebooting and the display is still bad.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am new to Ubuntu, I installed the latest version and when I turn it on I get like a distortion of the screen, I would gladly post a picture of it but I have no where to post it here. I am running Amd Opteron 175 with DFI Expert and GeForce 7800GT I made a partition on my Vista. I uploaded the pictures as you can see it has the distorted window in background and it just sits there saying 128%.
View 8 Replies View RelatedClean install of 10.04 Server 32 bit.Only services OpenSSH Server and Print Server.Machine boots and can be accessed through ssh.Virtual terminals (cntl-alt-1,2,3,4,... do not result in video to the monitor (no sync) or a display.If I type blind, I can log in, ssh back to my other machine, and create a file. So the virtual terminal is there and listening to the keyboard and running, just not creating a display.
This machine has been working fine with 08.10 for quite time up until yesterday, so I don't believe it is a hardware problem.Any ideas why the video on the virtual terminals would not work?
I'm running PyMOL version 1.2r2 on Fedora 12 with python2.6.
Only for a second or two will molecular models display correctly in the PyMOL viewer, and then the image becomes distorted. As I rotate the model, it displays correctly, but then almost immediately after I stop moving the model, it becomes distorted again.
The attached images show the display before and after the distortion.
This is some of the information that the PyMol program prints as it loads.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to Ubuntu and been trying to download some software not in the Software centre but when I go to terminal and I enter the command text I get prompted for my password ( it automatically has my login name) but the flashing cursor will not allow me to enter any text ,it just keeps on flashing but then it tells me I have entered incorrect password, What can be the problem ? The keys are not connecting with the terminal window it appears.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm new to KDE and am running KDE 4.7.1 on top of Arch Linux. It's fantastic however I have one problem - virtual desktops. Yeah I know there are those "activities" things which people say replace virtual desktops and I will look into them, but for the moment I want to stick with what I know.
And it's almost set up too. In fact, it is, apart from one issue: Say I'm on desktop 3 and I click on the desktop (as in - the bit with my wallpaper, etc, not the little square in my panel) - it immediately switches to desktop 1. Got no idea why I'd want it to do that and it's bugging me.
I'm getting this weird behavior when I have Desktop Effects enabled. When it is on, it's like there are two or three vertical and horizontal lines running across my screen that distort any of certain font characters that are under them. In some cases these characters are trimmed slightly, in others they have an odd skew to them, and in still others the letters are completely removed/missing/invisible. With Desktop Effects disabled, everything appears as normal. I have attached a screenshot in which you can see there are at least three letters missing from the left side (Desktop Effects enabled) and not from the right side (Desktop Effects disabled). There is a missing 'l,' a trimmed 't,' and a distorted 'p.' I'm on a one-week-old 11.4 install with nVidia drivers installed from that repo.
As far as I can tell, Desktop Effects works with few other issues, although there are some aggravating ones (having to click task tray items multiple times to get a response, multiple windows highlighted in the menu bar as though they all had focus, etc) that I will look into once I get this one key issue taken care of.If any other diagnostic information might be useful, please let me know and I will provide ASAP.
Just installed xsnow on my sisters Ubuntu pc and it runs ok, however it seems not to work properly with the desktop icons. When a snowflake falls over the icon it kind of cuts a jagged line through it. The icon is then restored when you hover over it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an unreasonably long time to wait from log in, to when my desktop is ready, it takes 40 seconds from hitting enter to seeing my files on the desktop, and about another 15 seconds from then to hearing the opening jingle. It used not to be this way, before it took less than 10 seconds, but about 4 days ago this time shot up suddenly, is there some way to diagnose whats causing this delay?

when i open a flash player on any browser, say i watch a video on videos in firefox and when i close the ff, the window where the flash player was, is left as a distorted image residue on the desktop.

I would like to split my display in two, so they would behave like two physical monitors, i.e. it would be for example like to connecting two 960x1080 monitors through physical ports. Is something like this possible? The problem is i would like to run two fullscreen applications on second monitor. Is that even possible? I prefer Windows 7/vista but I welcome Linux solution as well

When I switch between virtual terminals (CTRL-f1 Ctrl-f2) I can no longer scroll back in the VT I left and came back to. Any new data created will be scrollable, but i can never get back to before the switch. I'm sure this used to work (several years ago). Was this introduced as a security feature to prevent left over data on VTs from being seen by the wrong eyes? If so, is there a way to get the old functionality back?

Exporting display from a Linux terminal to a Linux desktop is easy; you do the following:
On 192.168.90.121 (localPC):
xhost + 192.168.10.164
On 192.168.10.164 (remotePC):
export DISPLAY=192.168.90.121:0.0 <br/>
firefox
The Firefox window appears on my localPC. In the above case both PCs are Linux.
Can I similarly export the Linux display to a Windows PC? In the above example, localPC would be Windows and remotePC would be Linux.
How can we write a file and display in terminal at the same time. Like for example, when I do..
php -f file.php > testfile
That should save right.. but I want to display it in terminal otherwise.
I'm using ubuntu (and compiz, though I'm not sure it's relevant) and I've been wondering something : how to display the desktop, as you would in windows using windows key+D ? In system-> preferences-> keyboard shortcuts there's an action called "hide all normal windows and set focus to the desktop". What does "normal windows" mean ?
When I press this shortcut (which seems to have the same effect as if you press the bottom left corner), the desktop is displayed, but there are some small squares in the corners that seem to be pieces of windows. What are these exactly, and if they're not useful, how can I make them disappear? Plus, if I press this shortcut twice, all windows disappear from the bottom panel (I don't know the proper name).
I have a Win7 deskptop (host) and want to run a linux virtual machine; but I want that linux virtual machine to be able to access a directory on the host machine (in this case, to serve a web directory).

OS Linux Mint 10, Intel graphics, SIS usb2vga adaptor.
I have three screens. The netbook screen with the extended desktop onto a vga screen and a third screen connected to a usb2vga adaptor.
The extended desktop screens without the usb2vga adaptor works perfectly. I can maximise applications to either screen perfectly without them spreading across both screens. As soon as I connect the third screen via the usb2vga adaptor maximising an application causes it to spread across both screens yet the third usb2vga screen has it's own virtual desktop environment.
I have tried numerous versions of my xorg.conf file that I have generated to incorporate the usb2vga adaptor to make this work and regardless of what xrandr commands I send including changes to the gconf settings nothing seems to solve the issue.
It seems odd that I can create a panel and position it left, right, top or bottom of the second monitor of the extended desktop and it sticks to the screen dimensions yet I can't get any application to do the same when there is a third screen connected through the usb2vga adaptor.
I don't use Compiz, it crashes my system and I don't want separate workspaces I want the extended desktop with the two separate virtual screens to fit on the two separate screens that form part of the extended desktop.
With Xinerama deprecated what other options do I have.

View 5 Replies View RelatedPrevious used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties:
Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first screen when 2nd screen is unplugged Keyboard shortcut friendly Not too hard to install Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics.
1-When entering a music CD, video or files, any programs or music or video players and desktop are closed are removed all the icons and I can not open any program only on firefox, I can not see the files or anything . (NOTE CD-rom is in mint condition)
2-I graphics effects ruin the entire desktop and when it is in fact no graphic still looks bad everything looks pixelated or striped like when flex is damaged or something is damaged and is in perfect condition.
Now I'm going with the version 10.04 of ubuntu:
1-I have the same problem with the CD I had in 9.10, except that in the 10/04 I can open some programs with the Emphaty and monitor systems.
2-When you close the laptop when I open the screen looks as if the flex embers damaged or broken screen (when it is of course) and I have no other to reset it.
3-When you drive about 30 minutes using computed with any open programs (Firefox, Emphaty, emesene, movie player, Gnome player) to close it or minimize it gets super slow and sometimes if I Friza and then to turn it off and repeat history.
4-When I'm watching a movie or a video with movie player is super slow (just what I'm playing does not the OS) as if Lageado and stuff. But with Gnome looks pretty good player just the video looks very small and I can not put it full screen. Certainly in a Dell Latitude C610 Pentium III-Processor: 1000/700mhz-Memory: 512MB Graphics-Card: 16mb.
ive tried 3 different distro's and i get the same issue with all 3, kubuntu 10.10, lubuntu 10.10 and opensuse 11.3... ok i know kubuntu and lubuntu are practically the same but on all the disks when i boot them i get exactly the same problem, they are all 64bit.

I have 4 differences situations, 2 work, 2 do not: So I think my server box (Jill) is messed up.
1) On the server desktop, I can open a console as the gui logged in user and type: xeyes and those eyes appear.echo $DISPLAY :0.0
2) If from that console I log in as another user (ros) and then type:
xeyes I get:
Error: Can't open display:
echo $DISPLAY
(NOTHING)
so that will be a problem.
3) If I ssh into my offices remote server from my XP machine with putty and x-forwarding and then type:
xeyes and those eyes appear.
echo $DISPLAY
localhost:11.0
4) If I ssh into Jill from my XP machine with putty and x-forwarding and then type:
xeyes I get:
Error: Can't open display: echo $DISPLAY (NOTHING)so that will be a problem.
This leads me to think I have something messed up on my Linux box Jill.
I have tried setting DISPLAY= to various values but same error, so this led me to believe something else needs setting. Especially as env yields alot more in situation 1 than in situation 2.
What can I set where, that will allow me run xeyes (anything X) in situations 2 and 4, just like in situation 1 and 3?
When ctrl alt d or the icon on the bottom left corner is pressed, it sometimes doesn't show the desktop and instead restores hidden windows. Is there a way to access the desktop directly, without only one shortcut ? I was also wondering how useful are these hidden windows (sometimes, the icon in the application bar is bar after being idle for a while).
