I followed instructions to enter single user mode by adding single at the end of kernel line but after that it doesn't ask for root password but brings up the sh# prompt. Isn't that supposed to be insecure? I understand for this the grub password can be applied but even after adding "single" it should ask for root password..or it should not..??

I'm in the process of configuring a "guest" account for houseguests tose my computer. I've got the file permissions set, but I'd also like to restrict their access to the terminal. It seems to me that most of the damage that can be done to a computer goes through the terminal.I downloaded Pessulus (I use Gnome)but it doesn't require a password. the profiled user can just open Pessulus and alter their profile -- what's the point?Is there a way I can require a user to enter a password, either for any terminal or Pessulus?I like Pessulus -- it's concise and easy to use. But it doesn't seem very secure as I understand it.

Succeeded in connecting to internet using my wll phone. I can now connect using 'wvdial' command in root terminal. But I want to connect through terminal. I tried 'sudo wvdial' command. Then I am asked for my password. But I cannot type my password there. When I type, nothing appears on the terminal window. Ofcourse there's no problem with my keyboard.

I am trying to set up samba server on my box, and the easiest way seems to be to use the kde4 samba setting dialog. I need to run it as super user though. I tried
su -
systemsettings
but the window doesn't seem to appear on the screen.

My problem is that I cant "rewrite" older password to new. It looks like I do:
Changing password for user johny.
New UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
passwd: all authentication tokens updated successfully.
all looks OK but after set up new password I can log in using OLD and NEW password. It's very unsecure for me. So in fact I cant change password and it looks like centos create next password to one accout and one account have more then one password... how can I prevent it? pls help me couse its very unsecure in my case.user looks in file shadow /etc/shadow like this:
johny:6JWuwPcQiWCCM:14994:0:99999:7:::
in etc/passwd looks like this:
johny:x:20010:20011::/home/gs-world:/sbin/nologin
how to delete all old passwords?

After updating my system yesterday my laptop will no longer connect to my wifi connection, in fact the network manager doesn't appear on the screen. I cant access super user even with the correct password. Some programs fail to load e.g. hardware drivers.I'm online now using my ethernet cable. I cant update grub due to errors in etc/grub.d/README.I'm logged in as root now instead of my own user account.

The terminal does not let me enter PASSWORD (or anything else) for SUDO prompt. My password still works to boot up and for syntactic. Surely changing terminal background color from purple to green did not cause this.
While trying to find an Open Office document I stupidly lost, I meandered around to LOST & FOUND "You (me) are not the owner, so you can not change these permissions. Does this relate to password problem?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 minimal with Openbox; far from a standard install but nearly everything works the way it should.
The problem appears quite simple:
Firefox does not recognise installed plugins (i.e, Flash) when running as the standard user; if I run the command 'sudo firefox' however, Firefox loads in plugins just as it should.
I've checked about:plugins in both instances and this has confirmed what is stated above. The list is populated when running as the super user, and empty when running as standard.

I have installed the new phpMyadmin3.4.1 on a server running Ubuntu 9.10 with apache and mysql. It runs on php5.2.10The apache config seems fine as the virtual directory that I configured works fine. http://<ip-of-server>/phpmyadminlink works. The home page is displayed. But when I enter the user name and password, instead of logging into the console, it again redirects me to the index page of the site. There are no errors displayed. I have checked that cookies on browser are enabled.The server is hosted on amazon web services, if that makes any difference

When running MC in xterm or gnome-terminal, it doesn't seem to allow the use of Ctrl-enter and Ctr-shift-enter to copy marked files to the command line.
Does anyone know of another way to cause this to happen or a way to enable it under xterm/gnome-term?

I need to recover the root password or reset it. For this, I am trying to follow the following steps to get into the single-user mode & where exactly I am getting stuck: 1. Reboot the machine2. Press <esc>3. At the boot loader screen, i have 'Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server ($version info)' highlighted. 4. Simply pressing 'e' (for editing) does not work (does nothing). 5. I have the option to press 'p' to enter boot-loader password and then go into the single user mode.What if I don't know the boot loader password as well & I want to get into the single-user mode WITHOUT using a boot CD? Is this possible? If so, please share the procedure to do so.

I've been having problems whenever I'm asked for my password inside the Terminal. The most recent one happens when I type this
Code:
ben@ben-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer
It says this
Code:
[sudo] password for ben:
But then I can't type anything. I try to but nothing happens.
