i ahve to boot it from the command like an executable but i dont know how to exactly and when i thought i had it figured out i didnt know how to write the name of the file in the disk ubuntu just kept saying file or directory not found
View 14 RepliesI have an old unuseable computer at home that became useless after a hard disk failure. I don't want to spend money on buying a new PATA IDE HDD for it, so I was wondering if I can use a PXE boot server on my notebook (using a virtual machine with Linux) and boot a Linux on the old machine with PXE without using Hard Disk. It is possible? Do I will need to make some extra configuration or use some specific enviroment do do this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.
In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.
Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.
The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.
I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.
After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!
When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.
I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!
Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".
Is it possible to boot from a disk image file(containing linux) file that resides inside windows and add a bootloader entry for booting from the disk image.?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Centos 5.5 system that had 2 primary partitions (2nd is setup as LVM with multiple LVM partitions) and then installed Windows 7 as Dual Boot.
However, Windows 7 has installed a 200MB system partition which is GPT/EFI as partition 3 and the Win7 OS as a Primary Partition.
I have a heap of space undefined after this fourth primary partition.
However, as 4 primary partitions have been used, I can no longer create an extended partition to utilise this.
As such I would like to know what is the best and safest way to proceed, and if possible step by steps instructions for the best option eg:
1. Delete the Windows 7 System Partition and create the extended partition (I expect this will prevent Windows from booting)
2. Use something like partition magic to change the Win 7 OS Partition 4 to an extended partition (Not sure if this will work)
3. Make changes to the overall system including both Linux and Windows so that it will use GPT only (I have
had no experience with GPT so this is a bit scary)
4. Other?
am currently using Windows 7 across my networked PCs at home.
I've just received my new Samsung N250 Plus Netbook which comes with Windows 7 Starter (yuk). I read a post on Ebuyer from someone who has installed ubuntu on his N250 so thought I'd give it a go tonight.
My main concern is whether my wi-fi card (Broadcom 802.11n according to windows) will work when I remove windows and install ubuntu. I intend to use the netbook for internet use only while working abroad.
Is it possible to test it works by running ubuntu from my USB stick first (without removing windows 7)?
I currently run a Windows 7 Compaq laptop with an Athlon x2 and 4gig of DDR2. I want to either set up a dual-boot on my laptop, or make Linux the Primary with Windows running in something like a virtual box. I am very much into Android and I want to learn Linux as a result of that. So which Distro should be considered in a situation like this.

While I am an IT Service Management major, I really only know enough to be dangerous, and I don't want to ruin the first computer that I have ever bought outright. (Nor do I want to have to reload Windows 7 again.) I also want to be able to run Microsoft Office (I despise OpenOffice, so this is not an option), other programs native to Windows, and iTunes. Anyone know how to do this correctly?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a T61 with Windows 7 and Ubuntu on it and it works great. I also have a HP Mini 5102 with Windows 7 on it. I deleted the HP_RECOVERY partition and merged with my Windows partition because you can only have four partitions. I got Ubuntu Netbook Remix on a thumb drive and I installed it by telling it I want to pick between them at boot up. However, when I boot up my netbook it just goes right into Windows, no Grub. Here is what my fdisk -l looks like.

I've just installed linux on my Acer Aspire One netbook, (10.10 netbook edition) I've done it as a duel boot with Windows 7 Starter as i want to use Linux, family want to use windows. But ideally i would want the pc to boot up as Windows then say if i hit a certain key on bootup it would swap it over to Linux from windows before it starts to load?

View 15 Replies View RelatedWell today I decided that I couldn't wait for the offical release of 10.04 LTS, so I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS Beta 2. After realizing that many problems had come with that update, I decided to just format my Ubuntu partition and reinstall it. Somehow my GRUB stopped working from when I formatted Ubuntu, so I whipped out the old Toshiba recovery disk for Windows Vista 32bit. After many attempts to have the recovery portion of the disk fix all of my problems and seeing no results, I decided that reinstalling Ubuntu (and GRUB) might make everything all better. Well it didn't. Grub shows my Windows partition but fails to boot it. After selecting it, it goes to a blank screen and stops responding. And to add to all of my problems, my BIOS has changed slightly. It no longer shows/or responds to F2 or F12 when I tried to give another try at that Toshiba recovery disk. That kinda sucks since I can't choose what to boot. Please help me!! I really don't want to have to format my entire hard drive and try to install Windows Vista again (Not that Vista is anything anyone should love) I have many expensive programs that can only be activated a certain amount of times. I don't even think that I could reinstall Vista since my BIOS won't let me boot the CD/DVD drive.

It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible,can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 2 TB disk in an external SATA dock, formatted with a single ext3 (Linux) partition, which doesn't show up in the Windows 7 Computer Management->Disk Management utility, even as a raw/blank disk. I've verified that there's nothing wrong with the disk by connecting it to my Linux machine and mounting it, and I've verified that the dock is functioning properly by connecting a different FAT32-formatted disk, which mounts flawlessly as expected.I realize that I can't actually read the ext3 partition without additional software (e.g., Ext3IFS), but why doesn't the disk show up at all? Is there some sort of stupid anti-Linux filter built in? Is there any way to force Windows to recognize the disk, so that I can at the very least use direct block access with it?
Background: I want to clone an identical 2 TB disk onto this one. Due to my hardware layout, it's much easier to have the source disk attached to one machine and the destination disk connected to another, and do the clone over the network (the network is not a bottleneck with switched gigabit ethernet), than it is to hook them both up to one machine.(1) I did this once before when both machines were running Linux, but I've since upgraded the destination machine and decided to switch back to Windows for regular desktop use. I've got Cygwin installed, and have verified that the same basic method (dd + nc) will work, but I can't do anything if Windows doesn't even consider the destination disk to exist.I only have one eSATA port on each machine. Opening them up just to do this clone is a rather large annoyance. Also, since this is my backup disk, I'd like to eventually automate the cloning from the active disk to another one that I regularly swap with a third disk that I store off-site.
I would like to know if I can install Super OS 10.10 or Meego on my Netbook? It has the memory and HDD space, and If I decide to. will it work with Windows XP Home also?
View 6 Replies View RelatedBefore Christmas, I wiped all partitions off my Acer Aspire One D150 netbook and installed Jolicloud Linux to try out. It's great, but I'm missing too much of my Windows-only software so I'd like to switch back.The problem I'm having is that the Windows XP Home setup CD is starting up the installer fine, but when it comes to selecting the harddrive to install on it's not finding anything.I've tried using GParted to wipe all partitions again and create a new FAT32 partition, but that's not being picked up by Windows XP setup either. (I've tried setting the 'boot' flag on this partition in GParted as well, but no change.)Is FAT32 not the correct paritition type for Windows XP Home? I'm thinking this isn't relevant at this point, because Windows XP setup doesn't seem to be mounting the HDD, nevermind analysing what partitions it has on it already.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running out of disk space, so I decided to resize Windows 7 on my first hard drive, so I could add another ext4 partition to put data on. However, gparted threw an error during the resize, and left with me a un-bootable Windows 7 partition. Windows 7 gets up to about where the login screen appears, but then BSODs and reboots. Unfortunately, the bsod is so fast, that I cannot see any details. Windows 7 recovery mode cannot fix the issue. When I try to repair the disk in gparted I get this error:
ERROR: Current NTFS volume size is bigger than the device size!
Corrupt partition table or incorrect device partitioning? I have attached my gparted_details log files, in a zipped folder.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an unbranded netbook (N270, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, no disk drive). This netbook had a strange, unusable Linux installation, which did not allow any possibility to modify anything on the machine. I could not even use F2 to get into the BIOS. F2 was the only key I could use to get a boot device option. I wanted to wipe off that Linux installation and install Windows 7 (reading some instruction from the net, using USB drive or SD card). I have done a similar installation on another netbook and it worked OK. On this machine though, I could only see "GRUB" when I tried to boot using USB or SD card. Later, I used UNetBootIn on SD card to load Ubuntu LiveCD.
This time it worked and I though of installing Ubuntu on this machine instead of Windows7. I chose to use the entire HDD, thereby, wiping the old original Linux installation. The installation went well and I wanted to start Ubuntu from the HDD. But it only ended up in a "C" with a blinking cursor. Laterwhen I tried to boot from the same UNetBootIn SD card, all I get is a "GRUB" with nothing else. The same happens when I try to boot from the USB drive with the Windows 7. I am left with no bootable OS on the netbook, no way to get into the BIOS, no possibility to boot from USB or SD card.
Today I decided to give Fedora15 a shot, mainly because of Gnome3, and so decided to install it over my Ubuntu installation. This is my partition scheme:Two NTFS partitions for Windows;

I have multi-version Kernels on a Dual Boot WinXP / openSUSE 11,3 box. It's been a LONG time since I needed to boot to Win XP and now that I find that I can't get to it, I can not say for sure what I did to break it. Looking back, I suspect that the method I used for the recent removal of one of the Kernel versions may have been innappropiate. Rather than unchecking in versions/package groups I may have just removed the unwanted kernel in the package list. Not sure. I've tried dinking around with menu.lst and Yast Boot Loader to no success. I get errors depending on what I messed with. Didn't try to reinstall grub until I checked here for help with a fix.

I'm fairly new to ubuntu. I set up dual boot with 10.4 (64bit) on a machine with windows 7 installed first.Everything worked just fine but it seems that there is a bunch of unallocated space on my hard drive. Can anyone explain what all the different partitions are and if/how I can "clean it up"?

When I look at my router which is running DD-WRT I noticed my active connections was over 500 whereas should only be around 200 maybe or less. This does not occur under windows,so am not sure where to begin.box is running 64 bit quad core processor.

Preferably in a separate partition allowing boot to either Linux or Win 7.This needs to be a high confidence installation, because if the existing Win 7 installation is screwed up there appears to be no way to recover.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been wanting to do this for a while and after upgrading some of my pc components I decided I would finally try to dual boot with full disk encryption on both windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. I managed to encrypt the windows drive with truecrypt and that worked. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the alternate cd and everything but /boot is in an encrypted LVM. Each OS is on a separate SATA drive the windows is on sda1 and ubuntu /boot is sdb1.
To setup the dual boot I started out following the tutorial [url] but its for XP and versions of ubuntu that use grub not grub 2. I ran dd as posted and saved the files it produced from truecrypt. I then ran into some problems with grub reinstallation so I simply reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 from scratch again. This put grub 2 on the computer. I've managed to get it to add a Windows 7 option.
However, when the option is selected truecrypt comes up and says that the bootloader is corrupted and that I need to use the repair CD I burned before I encrypted the drive. My question is does anyone have any experience dual booting using Truecrypt on Windows 7 and LUKS/dm-crypt on Ubuntu 9.10 with grub 2? And how would I get the boot menu to work? I'd rather not reinstall but if I have to I have images from right before I encrypted so it wouldn't be the end of the world.
