General :: Grub - Cannot Boot Netbook With USB / SD Card

Feb 23, 2010

I have an unbranded netbook (N270, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, no disk drive). This netbook had a strange, unusable Linux installation, which did not allow any possibility to modify anything on the machine. I could not even use F2 to get into the BIOS. F2 was the only key I could use to get a boot device option. I wanted to wipe off that Linux installation and install Windows 7 (reading some instruction from the net, using USB drive or SD card). I have done a similar installation on another netbook and it worked OK. On this machine though, I could only see "GRUB" when I tried to boot using USB or SD card. Later, I used UNetBootIn on SD card to load Ubuntu LiveCD.

This time it worked and I though of installing Ubuntu on this machine instead of Windows7. I chose to use the entire HDD, thereby, wiping the old original Linux installation. The installation went well and I wanted to start Ubuntu from the HDD. But it only ended up in a "C" with a blinking cursor. Laterwhen I tried to boot from the same UNetBootIn SD card, all I get is a "GRUB" with nothing else. The same happens when I try to boot from the USB drive with the Windows 7. I am left with no bootable OS on the netbook, no way to get into the BIOS, no possibility to boot from USB or SD card.

General :: Using GRUB To Boot From An Pci Sata Raid Card?

Mar 18, 2011

I have a DL380 G3 HP server and I need to attach a 1TB hard drive. Of course the server only accepts SCSI and since I don't have a few thousand pounds to splash about I am looking at alternate methods. What I have done so far is buy a PCI SATA raid card and attach the 1TB drive to it. The BIOS seemed to be playing nice detecting it and allowing me to select the card. But it wont see the drive.

Funnily enough though when I installed Linux on the SCSI drive during the install it saw the 1TB just fine and I could write to it. This has led me to believe that I could use GRUB (installed on the SCSI) to boot the 1TB as the hardware setup is working but the BIOS just can't handle it. So here I am with no real knowledge of GRUB. I was hoping someone could tell me where to begin with this and if it is even possible

Ubuntu :: Goes Right Into Windows No Grub When Boot Up Netbook

Aug 16, 2010

I have a T61 with Windows 7 and Ubuntu on it and it works great. I also have a HP Mini 5102 with Windows 7 on it. I deleted the HP_RECOVERY partition and merged with my Windows partition because you can only have four partitions. I got Ubuntu Netbook Remix on a thumb drive and I installed it by telling it I want to pick between them at boot up. However, when I boot up my netbook it just goes right into Windows, no Grub. Here is what my fdisk -l looks like.

[Code]....

how I can get Grub running on this thing would be great.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Boot Menu Hidden In Netbook Remix?

Jul 10, 2010

I installed Ubuntu netbook remix 9.10 and it ran fine. However, the boot menu is hidden and by default it always boots into Ubuntu (I don't know.. maybe the timeout was 0). I wanted to switch to a different kernel so I compiled a new kernel and installed it. But upon reboot it would always boot into the old kernel. So I updated grub and made the new kernel the default.

Now the new kernel is givine me a kernel panic and I can't access my system because the grub boot menu doesn't show anything (just boots into the newly compiled kernel and gives me a panic message). I don't have a recovery cd/usb. Is there a way for me to somehow slow grub down or show a menu? Pressing esc at boot doesn't help.

General :: Recovery - Reinstalling GRUB On Linux Netbook?

Apr 4, 2011

I have a distribution called Easy Peasy on my netbook, it's Ubuntu-based.Today when I started it up it told me 'grub corrupt'. On subsequent start-ups it displays 'unknown filesystem.' I'm given a prompt labelled 'grub-rescue>' but I can't get any commands to work I've tried booting off a Live CD of Easy Peasy. That works fine, but I can't get to my files. I've tried using a program called photorec and it can recover files from the drive but it dumps out gigs upon gigs of unlabelled files, many of which are things like system files or web browser cache -- I only have a few dozen text files I actually need, so this is pretty unworkable.

I'm trying to reinstall grub, which I understand to be part of the booting process, but I've had no luck; any set of instructions I've followed has inevitably run into some error or a step I don't understand. How can I get at my files in an easy to recognise way (such that I can navigate the original directories and get what I want)? OR

How can I easily reinstall grub such that I can just use the system like before without having to reinstall everything and lose my files?I think my drive is sda or sda0. In grub's device.map it's called hd0.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Boot Fail After Installing Graphics Card?

Apr 1, 2010

I installed a new graphics card (Nvidia GeForce GT240 1 Gb, 128bit DDR3) on my gigabyte VA900M motherboard, with my computer running a dual boot of windows 7 (64 bit) and ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit). The computer would not boot past the memory test stage. To solve this, i flashed the BIOS with the latest upgrade for the motherboard from the Gigabyte website. This still did not work, so, doing the usual "testing hardware combinations by unplugging and replugging", I removed 1 Gb of RAM, which solved the problem of booting past memory test (a case of too much memory?)

Problem: The problem now is, GRUB wont boot from the HD, unless I have the Windows 7 disk (or Ubuntu Live) in the DVD drive. If i dont press a key to boot from the disk, Grub will then load. how to make GRUB boot from the HD? Do I need to redirect/reinstall GRUB? Im pretty sure it is not a BIOS problem.

General :: To Start On Triple Boot Acer Aspire One Netbook

May 13, 2011

I currently have an Acer Aspire One netbook 120GB drive which came with Linpus lite preloaded. I have set-up dual boot a year or so ago. It now dual boots to either Linpus or Vista (yes I know!) via the Linpus grub.conf ( I got the instructions I think from here: [URL] I want to get the latest Ubuntu 11.04 build on this as a third boot option. If this work OK I may ditch the Linpus or Vista build at some point. So I've used Gparted on a USB drive to setup up three extended Logical Partitions (sda5, 6 and 7).

I then loaded Ubuntu s/w via an external drive with

/boot on 100MB /sda5
Swap on 1GB /sda6
/ on the 40GB+ /sda7

When I was asked for the bootloader location in the Ubuntu install gui I chose /sda5 (out of complete ignorance) All fine at this point. What do I have to get the linpus lite /boot/grub/grub.conf to see and start ubuntu?? Or is there something else I need to do?? Also, how does Ubuntu know which swap partition to use, as there is already one for the linpus lite install.

Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .

Ubuntu :: Grub Rescue On Netbook ?

Nov 24, 2010

I'm a linux/unbuntu n00b and having some major issues here. I am new to using Ubuntu and have been experimenting with it on my netbook as well as kubuntu and a few others. I love the linux alternatives to Windows. It started with me running Windows 7 Starter along side Ubuntu. I was trying to resize my Windows partition and give Ubuntu more space. I managed to somehow delete the wrong partition, making a very careless mistake. Long story short, my netbook is stuck at the grub rescue screen and I have been searching the net for about 3 hrs just tonight plus whatever time I spent last night searching and cannot get this fixed. I've tried booting from the flash drive using Unetbootin and it will say "Missing operating system" before the grub rescue prompt and I did change my boot sequence. I've also tried using some commands in grub rescue and got various messages such as, no such disk, no such partition, cannot find "grub_xputs", cannot find C/H/S values...

I have a Gateway LT21 netbook with a 250gb hdd. Any help is appreciated. I realize this is a common issue and has been posted a lot but I have searched and my issue is on going and I'm guessing its specific to my setup.

General :: Multi Boot Grub - All Systems Recognized But 10.10 Will Not Boot - Cannot Locate The UUID Specified

Dec 20, 2010

Problem: I have installed two Ubuntu servers, 10.04 32-bit and 10.10 64-bit, in a multi-boot environment (also have FDOS and WinXPsp3). The 64-bit will not boot because grub can't find the UUID for the disk with the 64-bit system.

Brief Background: Installed 10.04 LTS two months ago with no problems. 10.04 is in a primary partition on hda with FDOS.

Installed 10.10 (64-bit) in a new primary partition on the same hd. The install seemed to go ok, but the MBR and the fs on the 10.04 were corrupted; could not boot. Restored drive, and rebuilt grub.

Installed 10.10 on separate hd (hdb). In grub step all OS's were recognized so I pointed the grub to hda. Grub failed to boot.

Rebuilt grub from 10.04 on hda. All systems recognized but 10.10 will not boot because it says it cannot locate the UUID specified.

Compared the grub.cfg for both systems, the UUID specified for hdb is the same. Also, when I mount the drive for 10.10 on the 10.04 system the drive UUID is consistent.

I know I must be missing some thing, but I know not what. Have searched and can't find any clues. All other OS's boot ok.

Hardware: AMD64 4GB, 2 internal IDE drives (hda and hdb), 1 internal SATA (hdc WinXP), various USB and Firewire Drives (no bootable systems).

Ubuntu Installation :: Xp And - Netbook Dual Boot - Error - Windows Boot Failed

Jul 8, 2010

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.

In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.

Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.

The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.

I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.

After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!

When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.

I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!

Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

Ubuntu :: Cant Boot Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix On Netbook

Sep 19, 2010

Im a new linux user and so far im loving it, problem is i just tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix onto my Compaq mini 311 (via usb) and at first i couldnt even install from the flash stick...finally managed to by formatting the flash with an HP tool and then creating the bootable Live OS with "Linux Live USB creator 2.6."

I selected to use the whole Hard disk to install (the hard disk was empty anyway as i recently formated the drive which had windows 7 on it)

The the installation completed successfully but the problem is that after rebooting the OS wouldnt boot, leaving me with a flashing cursor or _ on the top left of the screen...

I have tried everything i could think of, using different Usb creators, formatting the hard drive before re-installing but for some reason im still left with the same blinking cursor after every install.

I have just installed the regular version of ubuntu 9.04 which works perfectly after installing but id much rather use the netbook version of 10.04

(I assume the issue has something to do with the bootloader but im completely new to the topic so cant really troubleshoot)

Ubuntu :: Grub Rescue On Netbook (With No Disc Optical Drive)

Jan 2, 2010

My girlfriend has a dual boot netbook I set up for her with Vista + 9.10. Her internet service went down yesterday temporarily and she was messing around with the computer to get back online and somehow booted into the Windows Rescue Partition and began the Windows Restore process, then turned the computer off during the middle of the restore process. It's her only computer and she lives 1800 miles away. And since it's a netbook there's no optical drive.

When she boots up now, the netbook goes straight into Grub Rescue mode. I got her to try most of the commands for Grub Rescue, but most of them come back as "Unknown Command". The "LS" command works though, and she was able to get a list of partitions displayed.Does anyone know of some commands she could use try to boot back into 9.10 (assuming it's still there)? Or even boot into Windows? Specifically, is there a simple command that could be combined with "LS" to specify a partition and try to boot into it?
