Ubuntu Networking :: Install On Samsung N250 Netbook / Test Works By Running From USB Stick First (without Removing Windows 7)?

Jun 28, 2011

am currently using Windows 7 across my networked PCs at home.

I've just received my new Samsung N250 Plus Netbook which comes with Windows 7 Starter (yuk). I read a post on Ebuyer from someone who has installed ubuntu on his N250 so thought I'd give it a go tonight.

My main concern is whether my wi-fi card (Broadcom 802.11n according to windows) will work when I remove windows and install ubuntu. I intend to use the netbook for internet use only while working abroad.

Is it possible to test it works by running ubuntu from my USB stick first (without removing windows 7)?

Nov 30, 2010

Has anybody been successful in getting a N130 with a RTL8192E wireless chip to access the internet? Ive tried practically every suggestion quoted on this message board downloading drivers, from Samsung and Realtek which wont open also linux versions with the same result, trying the Ubuntu compilation of Wine etc, etc. Am about to give up, which is a pity, because the Netbook version Ubuntu is very user friendly.

Ubuntu :: Drives Not Listed After Removing Raid Works In Windows 7?

Oct 29, 2010

I have two 1.5TB hard drives (neither one are my OS drives) that don't show up under "Places", but are detected under "Disk Utility". I tried to reformat them, but Ubuntu tells me that they are in use (even they are not mounted). gparted also detects them and shows them as being NTFS parition. I have deleted and repartitioned to NTFS as well. This works until I restart my computer. The funny thing is that Windows 7 sees them just fine. More detail as to how this happened below after system specs.

System:

AMD Phenom II x 4 955
ASUS M4A79XT EVO motherboard
8GB DDR3 1333
1 500GB WD SATA drive (dual boot Windows 7 & Ubuntu 10.10)
2 1TB WD SATA drives (extra storage)
2 1.5TB Seagate SATA drives (extra storage, these are the problem children)

Here's how I got here:

Installed a dual boot w/ Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. Everything was fine and ALL drives showed up and were mountable in Ubuntu. I decided to set up a RAID 1 w/ my two 1.5TB drives. I restarted, changed my SATA to be RAID instead of IDE and created my RAID 1. I then realized that through this motherboard's RAID setup, I couldn't have it copy files from one disk to the other to set up the mirror. So, after I rebooted and the RAID started building, I cut the power and unplugged my drives in a desparate attempt to keep my data. I then went back into the bios and set my SATA back into IDE instead of RAID. I was able to back up my data, but this is when the problem started.

Again, Windows 7 sees and uses the drives just fine. I copied the data I wanted from my 1.5TB drives to my 1TB drives and restarted into Ubuntu. But, no 1.5TB drives appeared under Places. I started Disk Utility and confirmed that Ubuntu does actually see the drives. However, it still lists them as being part of a RAID array (I did delete my RAID array properly through the BIOS after backing up my data). I'm not sure why it thinks that and I believe that's my problem. Also, Disk Utility lists a THIRD 1.5TB drive under "USB and Peripherals". Could that be my MB telling Ubuntu that a RAID is still set up even though I deleted the RAID pair?

What I have tried:Reformatted drives via Windows 7 as NTFS. This completed but didn't solve my problem.Repartitioned the drives with gparted as NTFS. This works until I restart my computer. Attempted to reformat under Ubuntu, but it gives me an error saying the drives are busy.Reinstalled Ubuntu (but didn't reformat). Didn't work. What I'm thinking:Flash my BIOS so my MB starts out fresh and hopefully doesn't tell Ubuntu I have a RAID anymore. Reinstall Ubuntu again (this time reformatting my OS drive).
Anyone have ideas as to what's going on? FYI I'm new to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Get Netbook Edition Install On An Usb Stick

The eee pc hasn't got an CDROM drive so I have to convert the iso file to an img file to get it on an usb stick for installation.

This page describes how to do that with [url] with Windows, Mac or Ubuntu using usb-creato. But I have non of these available.

How can I convert the iso to an USB image with the help of debian ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Getting 11.3 On A Usb Flash Stick On A Netbook?

Jan 26, 2011

I want to install 11.3 on a usb flash stick on a netbook.the internal harddisk should be completely unaffected, meaning

- when the usb stick is plugged in, bios should boot 11.3 from the stick

- when the stick is not plugged in, bios should boot from the internal hard disk

I am unsure how the boot options in yast have to be set to achieve that.I changed the order of the harddisks to /dev/sdb (=the usb stick) being the first.I selected /dev/sdb3 (The root partition of the to-be-installed 11.3) as user defined root partition.do I have to select "start from MBR" and/or "start from root partition"? is there more to do to make the usb stick bootable?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 Net Install Works But Internet Connection Test Fails?

Jun 17, 2011

I just installed 11.4 via the net install cd. In the configuration step, the internet connection test fails. Why would this happen if I just installed opensuse using the internet? It looks to me as if opensuse can already figure out how to use my network card. I went ahead and skipped the test, but it still doesn't make any sense to me. Let's see if internet works once I'm logged in...

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 - Internet Works But Online Access Test Failed

Oct 1, 2010

At some point, the install process asks whether to test internet access. I replied Yes, and the test failed. Retries also failed, leading me to conclude, mistakenly, that the ethernet card was not supported by SuSE 11.2. Finally I elected to skip the test, resigned to the loss of internet access. The install program then proceeded to access online repositories without difficulty, and I had no further difficulty accessing the internet. So why the misleading test result?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Running On Samsung Q1EX - Working Configuration - Failed To Get Textmode Console

Sep 4, 2010

I needed to load Linux on a Samsung Q1Ex for a project I'm contracting on, and could not for the life of me get anything to run. Turns out that the video card is a chrome relative, and for some reason, almost every distro out there (I usually use debian for this sort of project - ie, no money, but use SLES at my day job) failed to even get to textmode console. Trying several distros, I finally put it out there and used OpenSuse and voila!, vga was working. After that, I got X running, and many hours later had the mouse working. The key to this device is Windows. I ended up parsing through the registry looking for "touch" and found that the software in use on Windows is eGalaxTouch. A quick google brought up their site where I found several Linux drivers. I used the beta mode drivers to get the mouse working. Here is a more detailed breakdown.

Use OpenSuse 11.3 (I used the full blown disc - its is the only distro I could get to boot correctly as the others all used OpenChrome, while OpenSuse seems to use fbdev - note here that installing the unichrome drivers will actually break X and cause you to have to reboot to get away from the mess on the screen). Use eGalaxyTouch drivers. The pdf's included in the download have step-by-step instructions but the big pieces are the setup.sh script and the serio_raw steps (note if you perform a 'hwinfo --bios | more' you can figure out which /dev/input/event* you're using - for me it was event1 and serio4). Note also to choose PS/2 when executing the setup.sh script provided in their download. eGalax_eMPIA Technology Inc. TouchKit Linux Driver Here is my xorg.conf now:

Section "ServerLayout"
InputDevice "EETI" "SendCoreEvents"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
[Code]....

On the video, just stay with the fbdev and you should be good. So far, I've had KDE, Gnome, TWM all running; and now have my EFL apps running! Woohoo! Next piece of the puzzle is to verify sound, but on the face of it, looks like the system recognized it off the bat. And of course one other note. 11.3 is going to make me a convert!

Ubuntu :: Using The Samsung N150 Netbook?

Mar 5, 2011

I have just purchased the Samsung N150 net-book. The reason for purchasing was so I could watch movies, listen to music and browse on the go. It came with windows 7 starter and a load of pre installed Samsung crap. I was wondering whether Ubuntu would be a better choice for me since I only really want, Chrome, VLC, Spotify, MSN and Dev++ compiler.

I am very computer literate doing programming at Uni, but have not used Linux before. Also there's loads of Samsung software for extending battery life or something. Will I be able to install that on Ubuntu or not?

Ubuntu Networking :: Get New Belkin 7050 Wifi Stick Up And Running?

Mar 12, 2010

For two days I've tried to get my new Belkin 7050 wifi stick up and running. No matter what I did nothing changed, at all. After close to 8hrs of straight trouble shooting I have made zero progress. Zero.

If you have a bunch of free time and want a project then feel free to play with this device. However if you're short on time or have work to get done just take it back to the store and get a different device.

Here's the over view of my situation :

- Ubuntu 8.04 : Device is detected. DHCP = Doesn't connect to router / get IP. Router can see device. Router has no security / password enabled. After several hours of trouble shooting Ubuntu I booted into win2k (supported by device)

- Win2k : Device is detected, official software installed. DHCP = Doesn't connect to router / get IP.

It does the exact same thing in Win2k as it does in Ubuntu. - Ubuntu 9.10 : Did a fresh install if 9.10 just to trouble shoot this problem. Symptoms are exactly the same. DHCP doesn't get an ip. There are no errors in /var/log/messages

- Ubuntu 9.10 : Blacklisted the regular drivers and did the ndiswrapper method, smooth sailing. After all is said and done it does the exact same thing. DHCP doesn't get an ip.

In all the trouble shooting I did (iwconfig, ifconfig, etc) I never received any error messages telling me that something had went wrong (besides the part where dhcp didnt get an ip).

[Code]...

Ubuntu :: Removing Test Drive Keyring Authentication?

Mar 13, 2011

I have been attempting to load the latest version of Shotwell only to find that it is not available on 10.04. Consequently I attempted to load 10.10 and found that it would not load from my DVD. Similarly 11.04 fell at the wayside. Tried downloading both OSs again and again but each time failure to load.

Having come across reference to test drive I thought that I would give it a go and followed the instructions on this. It appeared to download OK but then would not display the OS. Decided to remove but despite it appearing to be removed (from the information displayed in the terminal) it still is loitering on the menu.

Since that failure I think that it could be related I am now being continuously asked to authenticate the keyring, something that from my initial install I have never needed to use.
