View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 2 USB drives connected to an XP machine that I rotate twice a month for backups. On my CentOS box, I have that drive mounted at /home/backup using cifs.
Because the drive is mounted on the Linux box, Windows XP complains when I try to "Safely Remove Hardware". As a result, I have to "umount /home/backup", then "Safely Remove Hardware". After connecting the new drive, I then have to "mount /home/backup" in order to use it again on the Linux box.
Now, this question may be a Windows XP question, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do on the Linux box first. Is there anything that can be done on either end, so that I won't have to "umount /home/backup" first?
I currently run a Windows 7 Compaq laptop with an Athlon x2 and 4gig of DDR2. I want to either set up a dual-boot on my laptop, or make Linux the Primary with Windows running in something like a virtual box. I am very much into Android and I want to learn Linux as a result of that. So which Distro should be considered in a situation like this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Windows 7 64-bit on my Quad-Core 3GB RAM machine. I am now looking to dual-boot it with Linux Mint 7 64-bit. While I am an IT Service Management major, I really only know enough to be dangerous, and I don't want to ruin the first computer that I have ever bought outright. (Nor do I want to have to reload Windows 7 again.) I also want to be able to run Microsoft Office (I despise OpenOffice, so this is not an option), other programs native to Windows, and iTunes. Anyone know how to do this correctly?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Dell 537s machine and configured it for dual boot of Windows 7 and Kubuntu 9.10. On my old dual boot machine I had the Windows System and the Linux System on different disk partitions. That way I could write fstab in such a way as to make the Windows System read-only as seen from Linux, so Linux couldn't mess up any Windows System files (and since Windows can't read ext3, Windows couldn't mess up the Linux System).
But the new machine came with Windows 7 installed and gobbling up 3 primary partitions. Kubuntu installed itself in such a way that Linux can read/write to the Windows System. This makes me nervous that Kubuntu might be able to mess up Windows 7.
Is there any way to make specific Windows 7 directories/files unwriteable as seen from Linux without altering their behavior in Windows 7?
I really hate to ask this. I have been searching for almost 2 days for a comforting answer but still not satisfied. I have a new Dell Studio 1555 64 bit system with Windows 7. I really like running dual boot systems and this is my first W7 machine. Is it vaguely safe to attempt to install Kubuntu 9.10 on this system? It still smells new and I'd hate to wreck it this soon, LOL. The vast amount of info on this forum along with the sheer number of posts makes it difficult to sift through sometimes.

I had a dual boot machine with fedora 12 and windows vista and I could use grub boot-loader to switch between two. Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 500GB external drive I want to use on a couple of Linux systems, and looking for a filesystem for it. External drives are frequently formatted in FAT32, but I don't need to interoperate with Windows and would rather avoid the ugly limited kludge that is FAT.
Since I only need to use it on Linux, I would use ext4 or XFS, but they store ownership information. Ideally, I'd use a proper Unix file system that doesn't track ownership (files are owned by whoever mounts the device, like they are when mounting a FAT32 partition), but I do not know of any file system that does that.What would be a good file system for this disk?

i am looking forward to having my own computer again will be installing ubuntu on it. but, before i install ubuntu, i would like to know how to remove ubuntu and return the new computer to its original state if it ever becomes necessary.
i was comforatable using programs such as mbrfix along with gparted to accomplish this task with my old computer, but that was a 32 bit windows xp machine.
will i be able to use these programs with my new laptop? i'm unfamiliar with 64 bit systems, windows 7 etc. and how they may differ from the older computer that i was used to.
I want to dual boot kubuntu. I am a linux noob so have basically no experience with linux except what i have done of the live cd. My problem is that when I get to the part of the installer relating to partitions. It wont allow me to select the free space I have shrunk off my windows/data partition. it calls the space unusable and will not allow me to proceed when it is selected. Shouldn't the installer turn the free space into a partition for kubuntu to install to? The installer also show a bar wich marks off the partitions and how much each one takes up it does recongnize that there is free space because it tells me that I have 25 gb free.

I have recently set up a dual boot comp running Windows 7 and Fedora 13 (test) and began noticing that after a short while,was taking forever to access web pages. When I look at my router which is running DD-WRT I noticed my active connections was over 500 whereas should only be around 200 maybe or less. This does not occur under windows,so am not sure where to begin.box is running 64 bit quad core processor.

I thought that I would try the KDE desktop and installed it with the command
yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
After tasting KDE for a while I decided that I far prefer Gnome.
I removed the KDE with
yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
This appeared to work but I then found that whilst I can boot into Windows 7, I can no longer boot into Fedora 12.
I have tried booting the F12 DVD and going into to the Rescue function. I re-installed grub but still cannot boot into F12.
I have looked at grub.conf but can see nothing wrong.
I upgraded from Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 to Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and running a dual boot system with Windows. On the grub screen there are four listings now for Ubuntu. Two recover modes and two ubuntu modes. Is this normal? Going to reboot and see if I can get a picture of it.

My goal is to have a place where both Ubuntu and Windows can read and write. What software is good for this task? Are their free programs that can run virtual machines? Also if my machine is running Windows 7 64-bit, can I install Ubuntu 32-bit? Or am I forced to use Ubuntu 64-bit? Or does it not matter?

View 14 Replies View RelatedRecently, my Mint update informed me it had an upgraded kernel version of Mint 9 and asked did I want to upgrade. Me, not being an old hand at things Linux, upgraded. Instead of overwriting the older version, it put the upgraded version of Mint 9 BESIDE the older one. So now I have, actually, 4 versions of Mint 9 on my PC,(generic plus recovery mode for each) which is dual booted with Vista Home Premium.
I don't want this. I have had weird problems and hiccups since I upgraded. I want to get rid of the newer kernel version and use only the older one. How do I uninstall the upgraded version of Mint 9? I have tried to boot into the older version, but there is no desktop and I have to type on the boot screen and in the terminal. It wants commands I don't know how to give. How do I restore my older version of Mint 9?
I just want one version on my PC in the dual boot with Windows Vista. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this? If you give me terminal commands, please make sure they are copy and paste ready. lol.
If uninstalling involves deleting partitions and doing a manual partitioning and formatting, I'll need easy instructions for that also.
I'm running a 64bit Version of Windows 7. I'm also dual-booting 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 (if it matters). However, for this I'm trying to get this working on the Windows 7 side of things. I downloaded the BackTrack 5 32bit GNOME .iso file (BT5-GNOME-32.iso) to my USB stick fine and made a VM on VMware Player. I set the OS as "Other Linux 2.6.x kernel" (if it matters). However, when I go to play my VM I get the following screen. I know I'm supposed to type Startx to launch the GUI. However, nothing happens; it's completely unresponsive (and yes keyboard focus is routed to the VM). There is no response, the cursor doesn't even blink.

Is there a way to mount the main windows partition while running the Live CD? I have tried it and get an error but I am not able to get it working. I have XP on my IDE hard drive and Ubuntu on my USB hard drive (which is really an IDE drive with a USB adapter and external power souce). We've used Windows once in the past month, so we decided to jettison it. Two questions: 1. Can we simply delete all partiitions on the IDE hard drive and reformat or will this cause problems? 2 Is the write-speed gain worth switching the drives out, putting the Ubuntu drive in my IDE slot and my freshly wiped drive on the USB adapter?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to dual boot Kubuntu with an existing Windows 7 already installed. I downloaded the Kubuntu iso and burned it to a DVD. I changed the boot order in BIOS to accept the optical drive first. Kubuntu installer starts, I can select a language and can choose to install. However, the problem happens right after I select install. The screen goes dark and the blinking white tab disappears, nothing happens, and I can do nothing to trigger any response. Now, I have tried the alternative text-based installer and that works. I mean that it installs, but when I try to boot Kubuntu after the installation nothing happens and the same or very similar thing happens that occurred back with the non-text installer.
I don't know what to do or how to diagnose the problem. I thought it might be the boot loader or maybe the graphics card, but I'm not sure. I'm very new to anything Linux and I'm not the most computer savvy person.
