I would like to know if I can install Super OS 10.10 or Meego on my Netbook? It has the memory and HDD space, and If I decide to. will it work with Windows XP Home also?

How do I go about patching this file into the Kernel?
I am using an asus eee pc and running ubuntu netbook remix on it. This morning I had an issue with the go home applet. When I click on it, it is not active and the alacarte menu won't appear. If at all I want to open firefox, I have to do it through the terminal. I tried to uninstall alacarte and reinstall it. But it is not working and the go home icon remains inactive.

I also notice there is configurable buttons 1 throught 20 under the various options. At first I thought the ButtonX was a mouse button. Maybe it is with some anticipation of there being eventually being a possible 20 buttons on the mouse. I know the Super key is the Key with the Windows logo on it. But I don't know what to do to get the needed Super Key / Button combination. After having enabled Compiz's Screenshot plugin by its default, I don't get an image after hitting any of the Super key and mouse button combinations. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04.

I used to use super+tab (aka windowskey+tab) to view and move between windows, but i havent been able to get this working since this new update. alt+tab still works as well as alt+shift+tab, but nothing with super.
View 1 Replies View RelatedBefore Christmas, I wiped all partitions off my Acer Aspire One D150 netbook and installed Jolicloud Linux to try out. It's great, but I'm missing too much of my Windows-only software so I'd like to switch back.The problem I'm having is that the Windows XP Home setup CD is starting up the installer fine, but when it comes to selecting the harddrive to install on it's not finding anything.I've tried using GParted to wipe all partitions again and create a new FAT32 partition, but that's not being picked up by Windows XP setup either. (I've tried setting the 'boot' flag on this partition in GParted as well, but no change.)Is FAT32 not the correct paritition type for Windows XP Home? I'm thinking this isn't relevant at this point, because Windows XP setup doesn't seem to be mounting the HDD, nevermind analysing what partitions it has on it already.

Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...
I got my netbook in the mail yesterday, opened it up, logged in, and Windows 7 was installed. Being a Windows hater my whole life, I followed a friend's advice and downloaded Ubuntu netbook, made a USB drive, changed the BIOS settings, all that. Here's when the stupidity occurs--I decided to go ahead and install Ubuntu without trying it, and to delete Windows to do so. A couple minutes later I realized that was a really, really stupid idea, so in a panic I turned my netbook off. I turned it back on and it was still on install but not really moving, so I powered off and on again and went back to the "Try Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu" choice screen. I chose "Try Ubuntu" and found that it did not recognize my home wifi network or ask me to join--or any wifi network, for that matter.
Now, it did recognize my wifi network the few minutes I spent on Windows 7, so I tried to change the BIOS settings back to where I could just use that until I figured out the problem. But no matter which setting I tried (HDD/SDD just gives me a black screen, and FDD and LAN do the same as the USB drive), I can't get back to Windows, so I guess I did delete it. Which leaves me with a netbook that can only connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Which kind of defeats the purpose.
Questions I should answer:
1. How am I trying to get online? My home's wireless network. We have a router. All the other laptops in the house connect fine.
2. Who is my internet service provider (and in which country?) COX, United States.
3. Can you get online with any other method? Yes, the internet works fine with an ethernet cable.
4. How am I getting online to post in this forum? My parent's laptop.
5. What hardware are you using? Toshiba N505 netbook and a router. I can give more information about the router if you need it, but I doubt it's the program since the other laptops are fine.
Give me one moment and I will add some code that it gives me when I put in the commands this website tells me to.My two final questions are:
1. Is there any way to recover Windows without buying it again?
2. How can I get Ubuntu to connect to my home wifi network?

I installed goblin by run GoblinUI.ymp and logged out.
After I logged out, I chose meego as session type and tried to login again.
I entered correct password, but when I press enter after type password , display change to black and got some message and backed to login session again.
On the other hand, I succeed in running MeeGo Live CD(1.0.1 build 1.4).
I wrote MeeGo Live CD image on USB Flash Driver by using Win32 Disk Imager, and boot that one successfully, although it has some flaw.
Network Settings Window is stuck in workspace and can't move or close, so it cover other appication's window. Internet on toolbar is broken, so I have to run FireFox in application toolbar to use internet.
I'm using Netbook based on Atom CPU and GMA.OpenSUSE installed in my netbook is installed by KDE Live CD image.
Should I Use Gnome to use Goblin, because MeeGo is using Gnome? Or.... what is problem make Goblin doesn't work?
Is there any reasonable alternative to Smeegol/MeeGo for small laptops (exception made for Ubuntu)? I had a look to Android on Netbook but it doesn't really seem a serious option - to me (but may be i didn't catch its sense (?) ).Small footnote: I, for one, as a person which has to deal a lot with text, i need a device with a keyboard and as elegant and smart many tablets are i do not believe in a "Newton" + attached keyboard So, for mobile, Netbook or small laptop (subnotebook) are a must. View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to install Ubuntu side by side with Windows. I have a big NTFS partition that has a folder with the same name as my username (let's say "joe"). Inside "joe" I have my personal files. Outside "joe" but still in the partition, there is random stuff that doesn't really belong anywhere, or now useless programs that I had to install there because the main Windows partition ran out of space. If during the Ubuntu installer I choose to use that partition as /home and make a user called "joe", will everything work fine?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am currently running WinXP Home w/SP3 only. I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 but has not been installed. I just came across "Virtual Box" in an article posted in Full Circle (issue #38). I kinda like the idea of being able to run different OSs without having to "reboot" to use one or the other. So, as a NEWBIE, I want to know how to go about installing Ubuntu on the same drive (if feasible), which Virtual Box to download and install, and basically .. what I need to do to get all this "stuff" working properly. I would suspect that .. with Win XP already installed that XP should (or mostly likely will be) the "HOST" OS with Ubuntu as the "GUEST".
Or, I guess that .. after installing Ubuntu, that I can designate Ubuntu as HOST. I am assuming that a "dual boot" configuration will be in order. I guess ultimately I would like to use Ubuntu solely and eventually do away with Windows. I use my computer as an "END USER" primarily for browsing, checking email, and such. No business, no office related stuff, no "on-line" gaming. I would like to keep XP ... at least for some time longer; at least until MS finally drops support! I cannot see continuing to BUY a new OS version every 3-5 years and just gets more and more expensive
I'm currently switching to a new laptop that will be my main machine and currently I use a laptop and a desktop on a daily basis. The laptop will continue to be used by another member of my family but the desktop will no longer have any use (well I might later build a new desktop but this one has finished his service).

Since I will no longer use it as a desktop/working machine I'd like to set it up as a home server. However I can't decide which OS to use for that. I have access to all Windows Versions since XP/2003 (with the exception of Windows Home Server) and I have some knowledge using both Windows and Linux so that's not a problem on my choice.

I am trying to set up a home network but I am having a slight problem. The network is reported as being open and active but when I click on the Windows network icon a dialogue reports that " unable to mount location, failed to retrieve share list from server. What have I missed. I have tried other distros such as PClinuxOS and that connected automatically so there is no physical problems with my wired network. My Workgroup is MSHOME and my host is Home1.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI know its not a Linux program but my brother had Linux on his HP DV9000 Laptop, Well he wants to go back to windows XP home edition or what ever, he played around with it and messed something up and when you boot it, it comes up with a GRUB error 22, so I try to boot it with the windows XP CD and when i try to install windows or repair it tells me there is no hard disk... which seems kinda stupid considering your PC needs a hard disk to boot up, so in the BIOS menu i did the hard disk testing and what not and it came back 100%...
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a Centos 5.3 server with Samba file shares and a shared Samba printer. I am not running a domain.
I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.
The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.
I will include below the essence of my smb.conf:
I am trying to set up samba server on my box, and the easiest way seems to be to use the kde4 samba setting dialog. I need to run it as super user though. I tried

but the window doesn't seem to appear on the screen.

I am unsure of the sequence here. Should I first mount: mount /mnt/floppy ...or something similar And next edit the /etc/fstab file....or is this step not necessary.
Finally, this is vfat formatted. Should I try to reformat it in ext or leave it as is?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI know this is a long shot, BUT Is there any way to implement the Netbook Remix 10.04 GUI into Windows 7? As in basically making Windows 7 look and act like the GUI in Remix. I love the GUI, and if it's impossible, I'll just suck it up and dual boot, the 30 gb Win7/XP partition is bugging the crap out of me. Just wondering if there was something out there that made this thing possible.
And for the record, I'd switch back to full linux when my card is supported in october =P
