CentOS 5 :: KVM Is Stuck Fullscreen, Can't Get Desktop?
Apr 1, 2011
I created a new Ubuntu 9.10 VM, and it installed fine. I then told it to upgrade, and was running it fullscreen and left it for several hours. Now the machine is stuck at full-screen, and Ctrl+Alt do not unstick it! I can see the mouse cursor, but cannot press Alt to bring up a menu or anything. I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a console, and logged in as root and tried to kill-9 the process, (qemu-dm), but it won't die! Any ideas on how I can unstick the VM? I have lots of applications running and transferring data now, so I don't want to reboot the box for several days until the file transfers are done.

I upgraded to 11.04 recently
I run 2 monitors, 1800x1200 and 1720x1180 approx (not exactly sure, but they are different)
I like to have many windows open on both screens.
The system keeps switching windows to fullscreen mode when I want to be able to see 5 or 6 partial windows on each screen.
It seems that if I align the edge of a window to the top of the screen, it switches to fullscreen mode, which is the last thing I want it to do.
Funnily enough, if I move a window to the edge of the screen, I want to be able to see the other windows on that screen. If I want fullscreen mode I hit the fullscreen icon; otherwise I want the size to stay the same. I dont want the window manager ever to arbitrarily give me fullscreen mode.
How can I stop this unwanted behaviour which is new to 11.04 ?
I have to admit that for my purposes the classic desktop is head and shoulders better than the default 11.04 desktop, but how did the release process manage to trash the earlier release's excellent desktop. Was Beta feedback totally ignored ? Rhetorical question, but hopefully someone up there listens.

admit I don't know everything and right now I am at my wit's end trying to figure out this one.The system is: F13 x86_64; GNOME (compiz turned off); wine-1.1.38-1.fc13.i686 and nvidia er from RPM Fusion xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-195.36.24-1.fc13.x86_64The problem is: When I run a fullscreen app in Wine, switch virtual desktops and switch back, the fullscreen app has shrunk. This did not occur on F12 prior to upgrading to F13.The app itself seems to have not noticed it was resized; on checking its configuration panel it seems to still think it's running full screen. What I want to know is whether the problem is in Wine, the video driver, or the window manager, or somewhere else, so that I can report it to the right people (or just fix it).

I just took delivery of a new computer, with CentOS 5 installed. It does not have a PS/2 keyboard socket, only USB. I get lots of strange "key stuck" problems - usually the shift key or the cursor keys (I guess I use them the most). Or sometimes key presses do not register. It makes it very difficult to use the machine.I have tried two keyboards (both of which work fine on other machines, or on this machine when booted with a live CD). The machine is an Intel i7. Are there any known problems with USB keyboard drivers in CentOS?

I am using Gnome desktop on Hardy Heron. My desktop nav bar (that normally is at the top) is stuck on the right. There are so many packed icons there is no place to grab the nav bar. I have removed several icons but I am getting down to the essentials. Is there an alternative way to move the nav bar that doesn't involve dragging it with my mouse pointer?

I've been trying to fix nautilus which is crashing, so deleted the ~/Desktop folder, thinking it would reset as in karmicnot in lucid. Now have home folder as the desktop. Tried recreating ~/Desktop, but no luck. Gconf-editor no luck either since checking or unchecking the home folder as destop does nothing. Any ideas how to fix this problem?

I have tried using linux a few times, I went back to windows every single one. But I recently installed ubuntu on my laptop and I was shocked that everything worked. Sometimes I forget I am not using windows. But my ipod stopped working ok. When I connected it ubuntu started opening file manager windows, like five per seconds, in a few seconds my bar was flooded with file manager windows. I fixed the problem getting rid of my iPod, now I am using a cheapy but more stable Phillips gogear. The problem is that theres an ipod icon stuck on my desktop and I dont know how to get rid of it.
Here is a screenshot of my desktop:

I have installed ubuntu 10.10 on my pc and whenever I login to the desktop it shows the gnome panels, icons, wallpaper and then immediately goes back to the login screen. If I try to login again, it does the same thing all over again but sometimes it works. Is there any way to fix this?

This might seem dumb, but I have a wifi applet stuck on the upper left corner of the desktop (on the desktop, not on any panel) that I can't get rid. I've never seen this before. When on panel there is kind of a "handle" that I can right click which then I can "remove from panel. There is no such handle on the desktop, if I right click on the applet it would just display the wifi menu.

when using desktop effects windows seem to get stuck in mid-animation and produce ghost windows which will disappear and go back to normal if i click on a blank area of the desktop. Its not a huge problem, everything else works really well and the issue goes away when i turn the desktop effects off. was wondering if anyone else has seen this?? I am running SLI on quad nvidia gpus so maybe this is a driver issue??

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop and it was running all smoothly, but all of a sudden when i booted, the only thing i could see were the desktop wallpaper and mouse icon, no panels, no shortcuts, nothing, meaning i can do pretty much nothing, i can move the mouse but can't click anything, the last thing i did was download and goof around with compiz and i was too happy because it worked and looked really great, even though i didn't want to activate restricted drivers for my ATI video chipset, but again, it was working cool and then boom, only wallpaper and mouse, nothing more

I am familiar with linux and have done some managing of servers before. I just tried to install centos 5.5 on a server, but after booting the screen was blank and my monitor said vga mode not supported. I found online to press ctrl+alt+F1, which allows me to see the rest of the boot commands. Then after I was able to see the boot commands it says enabling /etc/fstab swap, but never says ok or gets past that part.

I've got a very weird behaviour with my brand-new Slackware64 13.37 KDE 4.5.5 system. I've so far just installed some basic software from sbopkg and the fglrx-driver.
Whenever I pass the red line as seen in the attached snapshot from within the marked area, my mouse pointer gets stuck at the line for roughly one second and then moves on.
Approaching from the outside this does not happen and if I'm staying inside the area, it moves normally as it does at the rest of my desktop.
Turning on/off compositing does not change this, as well as removing the widgets from the panel or locking them. I always get stuck there.
I found out that it has to do with the setting of my external screen via D-Sub. If I switch back to my laptop screen as main, the problem disappears.

I've found a number of other entries about this, but they don't apply (the config files mentioned do not exist or whatever). My RHEL 4.x systems work differently, so the solutions I used there don't help either. In the course of some fussing around trying to get Virtual Box OSE to load, I apparently stomped on something so that when I log in now, I get the twm window manager--I was perfectly willing to have Gnome or whatever, but twm is a bit too light-weight for what I need.Anyone know where the magic config file or whatever lives in RHEL/CentOS 5.x?

I managed to install Centos x86 for the first time, together with VncServer, SSH access, mySQL and Apache. Everything worked greater until I logged in remotely to the server from my Windows 7 machine using RealVnc. I manage to connect successfully and able to use the GUI remotely. However, when I press logout from the menu, the screen gets stuck on the funky blue and white curly background. It does not close automatically.
If I close it using the 'X' button and reconnect, I get in to same stuck screen. My only workaround is to login with Putty and type 'service vncserver restart'. Then I am able to connect again. But same thing happens when I do a logout.

I am using CentOS 5.2 with GRUB booting a software RAID configuration. The first disk is md0 and is mirrored across sda1 and sdb1.I manually re-installed grub using grub-install and the machine will no longer boot off of the HD. The grub menu comes up, I can select my kernel the machine then jumps to loading the initrd and hangs. It will go no further. I have a live DVD that can boot from the HD. If I use that to first boot from the DVD, then specifiy the HD, it shows the same grub menu and then the machine boots fine w/o the initrd hang.I have tried re-installing grub but not been able to get the machine to work again w/o the DVD.

I'm developing a simple TCP server. 99% of incoming connections terminate correctly and the sockets disappear from netstat outputHowever, a few connections hang around for indefinitely in the FIN_WAIT2 state. Now, I know that the clients in this case are misbehaving by not sending a FIN,ACK to close the connection. However, regardless of client behaviour, the connections should only remain in this state for a maximum of 60 seconds (set globally by /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fin_timeout)

I've installed CentOS 5.5 on my Acer Aspire One D150. It uses the Intel integrated graphics chip GM945 which isn't supported "out of the box" by CentOS. My screen resolution has defaulted to 800x600, but it should be 1024x600. tried xrandr, and editing the xorg.conf file, and now have gone down the rabbit hole of trying to install xf86-video-intel and its associated dependencies (nested like Russian matryoshka dolls). I'm at the point of trying to install xorg-server, but am getting hung up by its dependencies on xproto and fontsproto, despite having installed them.

I recently install CentOS 5.5 on my small server. Unfortunately, I have problems with my mail configuration. I don't know anything about sendmail and dns configuration so I am just looking for something easy to set up. I use cron to perform automatic task. I set up the variable $MAILTO in cron to my regular mail. Cron send the mail but it is stuck in the queue.

This is a standard install, just like I've done dozens of times before.
Plain vanilla, just installed.
When I boot, I get to the splash screen and it doesn't go into the default selection.
Could this be a Hardware thingy? The reason I ask is because I've had this issue happening with 5.2 on the same machine. I just formatted it completely and installed a fresh 5.3 i386 on it and I get the same behavior.
[root@server ~]# cat /boot/grub/grub.conf

i find this is an issue which might be tiresome for everyone except for those experts. Esp. for the computers which are dual booting(both windows xp and centos installed in the same computer), that when we are in CentOS we need to switch onto windows immediately. and vice versa. i see this is possible only by shutting down the centos/windows and then restarting onto the other OS.
Can anyone tell me the the solution to work simultaneously both xp and centos without the need of shutting down and restarting There maybe or may not be the solution...but i find the pleasure to know if there is for example, remote desktop connection in windows xp, is there any solution, we can work on windows via centos or vice versa ( in the same machine),

I am trying to install CentOS 5.2 on an HP rp5700 desktop unit. These units were originally sold as a Point of Sales unit I believe, but HP also markets it as a high life cycle server for SMB market.I tried to load CentOS on this unit via CD (created from downloaded ISO of course). It presents the initial CentOS banner page and waits for the obligatory "enter" to continue. It begins the boot process up to discovering the PCI stuff and just locks up, no response. I have to power down to restart.Since this does not even get to the point of installing. I am at a loss what to do next. Has anyone had a similar issue with other PCs.The boot stops at the lineACPI: PCI Root Bridge [PCI0] (0000:00)

My Dell poweredge server running CentOS 5.4 and booting kernel-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5. All boot processes seem okay and the graphical screens for CentOS operate, but just before the desktop loads the screen goes blank and the arrow/cursor is being circled by small spheres. This remains indefinitely. While the arrow is being circled, here are the results of 'getinfo.sh device'

I'm currently in the last steps of migrating a CentOS mailserver to the x64 version. However, under the old 32 bit version, I was using XRDP to access the Centos box from my Windows boxes. However I can't seem to find the XRDP package in the standard repos so this is prompting me to look at possible alternatives (XRDP was incompatible with my windows 7 box anyway soI had to RDP to another server of ours running 2003 to RDP into the mailserver which was far from ideal).Basically, I'd like to be able to seamlessly access the Centos box with a standard RDP client.
I know VNC Server/Clients would be an option but RDP gives me the freedom of any windows box being able to access the server on the same adress/port without installing software on any windows box I encounter. Are there any viable alternatives to XRDP ?There's no "add-on" to VNC server that could enable it to accept RDP connections ?

I have CentOS 5.5.I did a remote reboot from NX, using "init 6", and I later found it isn't the best thing to do when you want to reboot from console. Anyway, I found the server, back at home, crashed (irresponsive blank screen), and after a reset it starts just fine until it attempts to start XFS, and it gets stuck here forever, it just dies.
