Slackware :: Repair Broken KDE Desktop?
Jul 17, 2011
I seem to have detached the menu system from the bottom panel. There also used to be a large 'K' on the left hand side of the panel that I could click to open the menu system - it is gone too.

Is there any way to repair halevt? If I reinstall via synaptic the installation fails with HALevt error 100. Then all installations of any kind report same error. I researched and found a way to remove the app install bug. However, mounting, accessing usb devices is still heavily problematic. I assume halevt needs reinstalling, but seems impossible.

I am currently in a country where the internet speed is roughly 15KB at best, if at all. So I cant download the 9.10 live CD. My grub2 broke when I reinstalled windows (because its so virus prone). This guide: [URL]. Says how to repair grub2 using grub2 live CD. Currently I have access to a 6.10 Ubuntu CD but when I try to mount the boot partition I get an error saying that the filesystem has unknown options. I think that the latest filesystem didn't exist back then and even if that would work. Can I reinstall grub2 using grub? Or is there any possibility to download an ultra small linux live system image with grub2? it seems all ubuntu variations come in 500MB+ packs.

As a suggested fix to solve a problem with cairo-dock, on 5/2/10 at 11:00pm, I ran the following in a 9.10 terminal window:Code:sudo apt-get dist-upgradeThis somehow deleted all of my kernel images, and a bunch of other files.I'm running the livecd now. Is there any way to run dpkg from the livecd on my mounted HDD? I can't access anything while booting up the HDD except for memtest in the grub, so going into recovery mode is impossible.

I think a recent update to 10.04 somehow has broken my installation. When I turn on the machine, it just sits at the splash screen with the white dots turning orange from left to right as if it is going to boot up.
I have tried letting it sit there but after half an hour it still remains the same. I have tried booting into recovery mode but that fails somewhere along the startup process. Is there a way to 'repair broken installation' when booting up with live cd? I have been able to get to that option and I am trying to avoid doing a fresh install if possible.

I have added to Debian Wheezy testing repositories. After a restart there is no desktop anymore just the wallpaper picture is visible but no desktop pop-ups.
When I want to install the desktop through recovery mode, I get an error message that it "can't fetch...repos". How I can repair /etc/apt/sources.list through recovery mode?

I have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.

I got an Upgrade manager notification in my panel so clicked it to see what needed upgrading. However when I went to upgrade I got an error message saying I had to fix broken packages first. See Screen shot. I opened Synaptic and this says there are no broken packages see synaptic screen shot... Is there a CLI way to look at and repair installed packages? (I checked other threads on LQ and found some advice for Fedora 8 which suggests running an rpm command, however rpm is not the package manager of choice for Mint.)

Don't know if I have a glitch or if I deleted something while dinkin' around. Anyway, I boot to the desktop and I have desktop icons but no panels at all. Alt+F2 does not work. I think CTRL+ALT+F2 gave me "run" window. "Sudo gnome-panel &" did nothing. "Init 1" gave me a "init 1" screen but I couldn't accomplish anything there for lack of know-how. Reinstalling is no big deal at all for me but I wish I could accomplish something geeky like a repair. I'm not sure of the process for using a live cd.

Curious thing happening since upgrade. The desktop toolbar is invisible, although I can get click and access the drop down menus for login, calander, power settings etc. Alt-tab works in 2D. The new desktop icons for natty are also invisible. I have tied to access a terminal using Alt-F2, but terminal window doesnt open. I had compiz running on previous 10.10 installation. I am at a loss as to where to begin fixing this. If I didn't have a windows 7 installation partition that would get screwed up I would flatten the installation and download and install a fresh install, but I do and I don't want to go through that pain if I don't have to.
Running Lenovo 3000 C200 with intel gm1345 gfx.

I'm running UNR 10.04 on a Samsung NC10.Every thing has been working great for the last few weeks since I downloaded and installed - almost everything worked great out of the box! Only 'problem' I was having was pants flash performance but that's a bit of a given I guess. However, this afternoon I did an update + upgrade, then did the required restart.Booted fine to login screen, but it then took a looong time for any thing to happen - before any panels/UNR interface appear, I get 3 errors, one after another. They are:
1. Could not update ICEauthority file /home/matt/.ICEauthority
2. Problem with configuration server /usr/lib/libgconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256
3. Nautilus could not create the following required folders /home/matt/Desktop, /home/matt/.nautilus
(I think the third one asked me to create the folders myself and then give it correct permission but not certain)I tried loging into standard Gnome desktop, same errors, same problem. Same with the gnome safe thing. After a while however, I do get one panel, in the top left corner - rather than stretching full width, it's about 2 inches across. On it are some buttons (mail, sound, chat, power, time) but not some that should be (guake, wireless etc)I brought up the run dialogue (Alt + F2) and tried a variety of programs but nothing happened with any (tried firefox, chromium, xchat, terminal)

I have KXstudio 64 installed, was changing the clock font and doing little, normal tweaks to the panel, pulled the edge in a little, and it just froze right there, and now the whole desktop is broken, unresponsive. Nothing works. I have yaquake terminal installed so i can access a terminal by hitting F12, and open applications that way, but no menu's, links, widgets, panel icons or anything are working at all, after rebooting, logging in as other user, nothing helps. I tried a apt-get install kdm or something like that, it didnt help tho.If the easiest thing to do is ditch the stupid buggy KDE desktop and switch to GNOME- then i'd prefer that.even while using the terminal, or applications opened thru it, it freezes periodically and i sit for a few minutes and it comes back. still no desktop tho.

I have a weird bug : segmentation fault appears when executing the 'retq' instruction of my sigalrm callback in static link...It seems it happens only on slackware...Here is a simple test case, compiled in shared -> no problem, static -> crash...Paste the following script in a file named "test-sigalrm-pack2.sh", and execute it: it will generate the C++ source and a simple build/test script.... Just launch the build script (tst-sigalrm-build).
Code:
#!/bin/sh
#test-sigalrm-pack2.sh
[code]....

Does anyone have current running with X on old ATI hardware? I have a laptop with ATI Mobile M7 and X completely fails to load. There are no errors in the Xorg log file. No failed modules or failure to load a module. The last line in the Xorg log says something to the effect of "VGA0 does not support DRI2".
When monitoring the processes while I start X, I can see xinit load, then X. After the line above is added to the log file, X dies. This is so bad that it takes my entire display with it so I cannot switch terminal. I cannot restart a tty session from a remote connection. The only way to get the display back is to reboot.
I tried the suggestions form this thread to no avail. Recompiling the kernel with "CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE=y" also had no effect. To get a working system I had to roll back to X from Slack 13, which works fine with current.
Did i missed something with the upgrade? Anything else I should try?
System info
Code:
Slackware-current 32 (with X from Slackware 13)
Kernel: generic-smp-2.6.33-smp
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit today and I installed Adobe Air with no problems. I then installed the Pandora Desktop application and that installed fine as well. After the installation I saw a "do not enter" style sign in my status bar on the desktop. When I hover over it it's telling me an application has a broken installation. When I go into Synaptic and filter for broken I see "com.pandora.desktop.fb9956fd96e03239939108614098a d95535ee674.1" is showing broken. The description is just <> <>. Both Adobe Air and Pandora are working fine, and I'd be happy to ignore this warning except it's going to break my updating because it throws a warning every time.
Does anyone know how I can see what is apparently broken with the install or how I can suppress this message? I had the same versions of software running on 10.04 just fine before I formatted, and I'm the only person on the internet with this problem so far.I've gone over dependencies several time and don't see anything missing. I've tried reinstalling both apps several times. I don't know why this is even showing in Synaptic, since it's a sub app of Air...

First off, this is not my laptopit is a friends that i installed ubuntu onthey asked me to try and fix their problem.PROBLEM: basically the desktop is locked. if it is any way to browse the files, it doesnt workyou double click a file on the desktop, you cant open folders. you cant open folders/locations through any menu.its like the desktop is an image of your desktop and the icons are hidden. but this is not how it is. the very first time you click on an icon, it highlights but nothing else. it wont unhighlight either.

Came across a broken link during updating system (Python). So I came across advise which I followed and though I had fixed the problem by removing the broken (python) Only to find I no longer have access to the Desktop.
This is what I have done so far:
Booted to Recovery
Logged in as the user.
Ran the following to reinstall desktop:-
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
All seem well, but now it wants conf. So I have ran the following after rebooting:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
But still no joy, as when the system reboots it stops at the splash screen desktop ubuntu and seem to be trying to boot to the desktop. But no joy.

I had a working ubuntu 10 on my old laptop. Not sure what's happened but now whenever you start any app, the app starts in the foreground, then immediately the desktop gains the focus. This happens all the time on any app that is either already running or started from scratch. Thus making the system unusable.

Morning All, I have a RHEL 4 box with a broken GNOME package. It boots to TWM. I have looked at some of the posts that recommend looking at config files etc. No .xinitrc file found. Cannot "exec gnome-session" , cannot find file. No choice at login screen. Some Gnome files are on the machine. How do download and re-install the entire Gnome-Desktop package?
