Fedora :: After Rebooting - Screwed Up Grub - Can't Remember Terminal Command To Repair Grub

Nov 24, 2010

I created a new partition in Windows Vista which, after rebooting, screwed up Grub. I believe that I need to reinstall Grub and everything should be fine, and I remember reading the command to do this on this forum, but I can't find it. When I boot, I now get a black screen with white letters instead of the Grub boot menu. It says something about "Minimal Grub" at the top and gives me a prompt that looks like this.

grub>

I can boot the live CD and I have internet access with it, but I can not remember the terminal command to repair Grub. Can someone tell me this command?

Fedora Installation :: Repair Grub Through Grub-ubstall - /dev/dsa Doesn't Exist

Jan 17, 2009

I am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:

Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:

All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.

My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?

General :: Edit Grub Menu From Initial Grub Screen - Possible To It's Own 'e' Option Or 'c' From Grub Command Line?

my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

Software :: Repair The GRUB From Fedora 11?

Jan 22, 2011

I'm going to be installing Windoze (because 3D graphics are still not there in Linux), but that will of course override the MBR. So how do I rewrite it? I just tried starting from the Fedora 11 DVD until it got into the 1st graphical screen, and then I tried to mount *any* of my Fedora partitions - I think it's made 5 of them (God knows why!!), but anyway, none of them would mount except /boot - kept saying "wrong fs type or superblock" etc. My plan was of course, to chroot my current Fedora partition, and then run grub-install, but of course I can't if the partition itself doesn't mount.

Fedora :: GRUB :: Menu.lst :: GRUB Starts In Command Line?

Dec 1, 2010

Code:

grub-install -v
grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97)

I loaded GRUB, and now when I reboot it goes straight into the 'grub>' command line. Initially GRUB had the root as (hd0,2), whereas the boot is on (hd0,1)...(hd0,2) is my '/home' partition, and (hd0,1) is my '/' partition... So on a bootup I ran...

Code:

root (hd0,1)
setup (hd0)

Now when I boot I still get the 'grub>' command line, but now the root is correct.

From 'grub>' I can type...

Code:

grub> configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst

GRUB will then show the menu, and I can click the listings to load them. All's fine, but why doesn't GRUB just load the menu.lst without my prompting? How can I automate this process of typing 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' each time I boot?

Fedora :: Make LVM2 Indentifier Back To Ext3 Or 4 And Repair Grub

Jun 18, 2011

I've done a search thru the forums on a recent headache but couldn't find anything. now we all know that windows installations knackers the grub boot-up, and it becomes modus-operandi to repair the boot loader, with a live distro. however, in my current dual boot system (vista.sp2/fedora12), i've done a clean install of windows7 over the current windows ntfs partition. as standard, the boot menu would vanish. but when i put in the live-linux cd, gparted now shows the fedora partition (sda6) as LVM2. i'm somewhat of a neophyte with linux, but fedora12, suse11.2 and ubuntu don't seem to yet support this file system.

since i don't have critical data on the fedora partition yet, i usually wouldn't mind reformating this part', but the wireless chipset on my laptop cost a fortune on cups of coffee and beer to install, and in addition i used the fedora12 FEL spin and want to keep the installation intact. is there anyway to make the LVM2 indentifier back to ext3 or 4 and repair grub form there (without loosing the current partition kernal etc.)?

Ubuntu Installation :: SUSE Screwed Up GRUB

Mar 19, 2010

I had Ubuntu 9.10 installed and working great. I wanted to check out SUSE because i heard it was better for laptops and wanted to test it out. Went through the install, which was a bit more complicated partition wise than I'd like, asking the begin and end segment shell or something. I changed them to give me a 5GB partition, deleted an old partition of gNewSense (wireless was just too difficult to implement ie. work) and tada... stuff broke. gNewSense still shows up in SUSE's "GRUB" but I can't boot to it. When I threw in my 9.10 cd to fix everything, it showed that 9.10 was still installed and gNewSense was not.

So, how can I fix this. Is there a way to just reinstall the 9.10 GRUB for the Ubuntu I already have installed? The sooner the better, Ubuntu was my primary OS and all my stuff is on it! FYI, do not recommend SUSE as far as installation goes

Ubuntu :: Update Screwed Up Grub Dual Boot?

Feb 3, 2010

On my hard disk I have ubuntu 9.10 (/dev/sda6) and Slackware 13 (/dev/hda1). Since Ubunutu was installed second, it replaced Slackware's lilo with grub. Anyway I modified grub and got Slackware 13 booting also, I has been this way for a couple of months. Tonight slackware would not boot, it kernel panic'ed.Complained about no device /dev/sda1 and listed possible devices, /dev/hda1 (What it is supposed to be) being one of them. What the heck, what changed???

A quick check of /boot/grub.cfg first showed that the las cahnged date was 2010-1-30. What? I have not touched grub.cfg since the Ubuntu 9.10 install. But, I remember that about that date I did a system update. there were four Slackware menuentries, and I remember only one. Strange. Anyway I changed Slackware's grub menu entry to root=/dev/hda1 and rebooted. Now it complained about no known file system, Slackware 13 is ext4. Here is the Slackware menuentry:

[Code]...

Software :: Unable To Boot Into GRUB Loader: GRUB Command Shell Boots Up?

Sep 2, 2009

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media. An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1

I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally. What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.

Debian :: Grub 1.5 Error 18 - Try Rebooting Your Computer Without The CD

I recently pulled out my old computer and decided I would install linux on it so I could get online. The specs aren't the greatest (Pentium II processor, 94 MB RAM, and an 8 GB HDD). I chose AntiX 8.0 as my OS. Anyways, I got through the installation just fine, but when it said "Try rebooting your computer without the CD"...So I did, and what happened? I got that error. I've tried rebooting with different Live CDs to no avail. Is there anything I can do to get back up and running?

Ubuntu :: Repair GRUB 2 Using Live CD?

Sep 24, 2010

I have been trying to repair the GRUB 2 Bootloader by using the LIVE Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 DVD.

Basically I've been unable to boot Linux Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 ( due to a multi boot set up) & read that it is possible to repair the boot loader by re installing it from the live dvd.

I've already tried to load up the DVD & run the Terminal program - on the command line I type '# grub-restore' & the reply is GRUB not loaded??

I've tried other command lines that are on various other posts but non of them work.

Or are there certain Linux operating system discs that have the function to repair the boot loader from the live dvd.

Ubuntu Installation :: Missing - How To Repair Grub File

Mar 2, 2011

I have installed windows 7 back to its former state in after foolishly messing around with some installation options in an Ubuntu install (this caused windows to disappear, and me to repair it). In *repairing* windows, I overwrote my grub file and the boot options for Ubuntu, so that it looks something like this:

Disk 1: Primary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Free Space ( this is where I have Ubuntu installed)

How can I repair my grub file so that I can boot into my Ubuntu installation?

Installation :: Manual GRUB Install For Screwed Up Luit Install

Apr 16, 2010

So I am stuck in the bootloader hell. With a vintage PC

Ok, so here's the setup:There is one HDD, with two primary partitions: 1st for the system, 2nd for the swap. I booted Luit Linux Live CD, and ran it's HDD install script. The Luit Linux is based on Damn Small Linux that uses kernel version 2.4.22. For some reason, it's bootloader LILO install did something wrong and the fresh install wouldn't boot

Error 15 By the way, I don't understand why the bootloader texts refer to GRUB, while the install script definitely was installing LILO.

I can now boot again with that same Live CD (or any other CD that would boot to Linux), and once loaded, mount the hard disk and check and update it's contents. I'd like to install there as up-to-date GRUB version what that ancient hardware (48MB RAM) can take, and then configure the GRUB to load that install that's sitting on the hdd.I will be very grateful for any advice. Unfortunately my knowledge of things like GRUB is very poor, so it's difficult to look up advice by searching the internet.

Ubuntu :: GRUB 2 : Difference Between 'grub-pc', 'grub-efi' And 'grub-coreboot'?

Jan 6, 2010

I would like to know if there is any differences on how to install and to configure GRUB 2 in the different architectures (BIOS/IBM PC-Compatibles, EFI/MacIntel and Corebbot)? Does the Ubuntu installer automatically recognize the different architectures and install the appropriate GRUB 2 package ('grub-pc', 'grub-efi' or 'grub-coreboot' according to the arch)? Or does it just install 'grub-pc'? Is the location of GRUB 2's configuration files different depending on the arch of the computer? Or are they all located in '/boot/grub/', '/etc/grub/default' and '/etc/grub.d/', no matter the arch of the computer? Are the files' structure and options to configure GRUB 2 ('/etc/grub/default' and the scripts in '/etc/grub.d/') different depending on the arch of the computer?

Fedora :: How To Access The Grub Or Command Line

Dec 18, 2009

with that said i burned fedora 8, 10, and 11 checked the sha1 verified everything was fine i had originally installed fedora 8 on an old pc i had from windows XP without any problems messed with it some, upgraded to 10 again no problems. tired to update 11 got a message about ext3 not found ext4 not found, re installed 10 the loader loads up now i have a blank screen with a cursor it the left hand corner

again i had 10 installed fine prior to all this can any one point me in the right direction to solve this issue or am i way over my head trying to figure this stuff out. i have spent 3 days searching these forums.

i'm just not quite sure what i need to do. oh, i tried to install 8 again and it wouldn't take either. i think the 10 problem has something to do with the graphic driver it's a geforce 7400 nvidia and something to do with the grub, but like i said i get a blinking cursor and not quite sure how to access the grub or command line.

Fedora :: Stuck At Grub Command Prompt

Jun 7, 2011

I was deleting some space off my C Drive and I believe I may of accidentally deleted Fedora, or some of it! I have a dual boot with Fedora and Windows XP so when I started my desktop up it would load into fedora by default or I could press a key to load XP! (It rhymes!) Now, however, it instantly loads up into "Grub"

And that's it! Run, Or Exit, or anything really, doesn't work! Except Reboot! So I'm a little stuck. It's an old PC and the Windows XP disc is long gone, if I ever had one! I had this thought that perhaps if I reinstall Fedora from a CD it many bring back the old command prompt and let me get back into XP again? Or, is that crazy talk??
