Ubuntu :: Repair With No Access To Desktop?

Jul 13, 2010

Don't know if I have a glitch or if I deleted something while dinkin' around. Anyway, I boot to the desktop and I have desktop icons but no panels at all. Alt+F2 does not work. I think CTRL+ALT+F2 gave me "run" window. "Sudo gnome-panel &" did nothing. "Init 1" gave me a "init 1" screen but I couldn't accomplish anything there for lack of know-how. Reinstalling is no big deal at all for me but I wish I could accomplish something geeky like a repair. I'm not sure of the process for using a live cd.

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Access "Your Desktop Is Only Reachable Over The Local Network. Others Can Access Your Computer Using The Address 127.0.0.1 Or Tabatha.local"

Feb 19, 2010

Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.

When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

Ubuntu :: Can't Remotely Access Desktop / When Desktop Is Asking For Keyring Password

I can't remotely access my desktop when the desktop is asking for a keyring password. Why does this happen? it means that remote access is useless because you would need to enter the password locally before you can vnc to it. I do not wish to disable the default keyring but is there a way of making vnc work so I can enter the password.

Ubuntu :: KDM - No Access To Desktop

Jun 20, 2011

I have a problem with KDM. No matter what I do, it will not give me access to my desktop. (Yes, I have entered the correct password, and I know that because when I intentionally enter a wrong one, I get red lines saying so). I have tried in recovery mode, other kernels, and the failsafe session. Console login does work. I have seen another similar thread and followed some instructions, but it was about GDM and it didn't work out.

I have ran genkdmconf, but to no avail (except it gave me a new face icon ). My other operating systems (Windows Vista and Ubuntu 11.04) do work normally. [EDIT: I do have an idea what's causing this because yesterday I flashed my BIOS from A11 to A17. I don't think this is the cause of the problem though, but some of you may disagree]. Of course it's not my first preference, but if a reinstall is necessary, I am one of the lucky few with a separate /home.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Access KDE Desktop Due To Segfault

Apr 16, 2010

For the past few weeks my system has been exhibiting some strange behavior. The first of these instances has been in the form of a total system lockup necessitating a power cycle -- ie. no kernel panic or oops, but cessation of all on-screen activity and an unresponsive mouse and keyboard. ( The first lockup occurred when the monitor was powered down)

Just a few days ago, I started noticing something else : Launching Firefox (3.6.4pre) resulted in it locking up near start-up especially if I was logged into Gmail. After that I experienced a total system lockup and then another one which has placed me in the situation as suggested in the title.

Specifically, KDM and the KDM login manager will start-up and I will be allowed to type my password. Immediately after that when the first of the icons in the KDE start-up animation starts to come into focus the screen goes black and I am returned to the KDM login manager -- I can enter my password again and continue this process ad infinitum.

Trying to diagnose the issue, I attached GDB to KDM. It seems that after I enter my password one or more of the KDE start-up processes dies with signal 1 or to be more specific :

Code:

Program received signal SIGUSR1, User defined signal 1.
0x00007f4ae742d3c3 in select () from /lib/libc.so.6
(gdb) bt full

- No direct desktop access. Only via side icons. Just find it fiddly re: using desktop and changing background via side icons.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Access BBC UK Content On Desktop But Can On Laptop?

Jan 14, 2010

Earlier when installing Karmic I requested assistance to enable me to listen & view BBC content in the United Kingdom. This involved me in loading :

mozilla-mplayer,
flashplugin-nonfree,
Ubuntu restricted extras

which worked a treat.

I decided to install Karmic on an old desktop system with the intent of using it as a backup system for my data. Having installed this as a fresh install I again followed the earlier advice only to find that when I attempted to connect to the BBC I was asked to load flash. This happened no matter which station I attempted to listen or view.

As far as I can see everything has been installed exactly as on my laptop and therefore should naturally work as before. The only difference is the laptop is using 64 bit and the desktop 32. Since I now see that the desktop is also capable of 64 bit processing should installing the 64 bit Karmic help?

Using sysinfo does not give too much information. I am told that the CPU is an AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core processor 4400+, 1000.000 MHz & L2 cache 512. The graphic card is shown as VGA Compatible Controller and the Sound Card as a multimedia Audio Controller.

I am at a loss why I am being asked for flash on the desktop and not being able to have the same benefits as I have on my laptop running the same OS.

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Access Refused

Feb 17, 2010

I have 4 boxes on a local network: 2 with XP only, 1 with Ubuntu 9.10 only, and 1 with both. All boxes can share folders, set up with share-admin instead of using Nautilus right-click properties for each folder. I can see and control the remote desktops on all boxes, to all other boxes, from all other boxes, with one exception: I can only access the XP desktop on the dual boot box, not the Ubuntu desktop. When I try I get: "Connection to host 192.168.1.102 was closed." I am refused access to the Ubuntu desktop in this manner from both the other Ubuntu machine, and from both XP machines.

My setups are basically plain vanilla with routine installs of Ubuntu 9.10. On the XP machines I am using TightVNC on the XP machines to view both other XP desktops, and the Ubuntu desktop that is accessible. On both Ubuntu setups I am using (I suppose) vino and vinagre, and have completely re-installed what I think is the relevant software. There is no firewall running on the Ubuntu dual boot, when I check ufw. For reasons I cannot determine the inaccessible Ubuntu desktop is not providing its own address but instead in the Remote Desktop config dialogue it identifies itself as 27.0.0.1 which I think is the loopback id. I know so little about this sort of networking that I am not giving all relevant info, but I still thought I'd try.

Ubuntu :: Get Studio Version Loaded Up Once Access To Desktop?

I entered my info and then the comp just sat there showing my username and @ubuntu (or something that i can't remember right now - I am at work). What command do i need to enter to get to the installed desktop. I actually wanted to install Ubuntu Studio but the computer i was on had an old DVD drive that was not working well and would not allow itself to be detected. Networking :: Can't Get Remote Desktop Access

Feb 23, 2011

my g/f was able to access her jobs computers from home in Windows. she'd go start->program->access->connect to remote desktop... (or something like that) in any event, i've found some programs in Fedora 14 that say they'd do the same, however i can't get it to work. in "remote desktop viewer" i'm trying to use 'VNC' protocol, and trying to put the ip in the first of the "Host" lines.

now, there might be another issue, is it possible she need more info than the ones she got in order to use LINUX remote desktop? she has (what she has written down as) Computer # 111.111.111.11 and then ';' and 4 additional numbers, so (for the sake of the example) computer#: 111.111.111.11;2222 she has a 'username' and a 'password'.

Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop Access Ignoring Firewalls And NATS?

Apr 27, 2010

How can I get remote desktop access ignoring firewalls and NATs? I succeeded in creating a remote desktop session within my home LAN.

Though I configured my router to pass through port 5900, and learned the correct external IP, I am unable to create a remote desktop session inbound to my machine, nor outbound to a machine on a remote network (with static IP).

This is caused by various network complications like NATs and firewalls.

Fogcreek's Copilot or Skype on Windows manage to connect with no network reconfiguration.

Is there some remote desktop alternative that "just works"?

Ubuntu Servers :: Linking Several OS - Access The Windows 7 Desktop Via Laptop

Sep 12, 2010

I am currently finalizing a SSH Tunnel (gSTM) via Ubuntu Server (see: [URL]). The gentleman who helped me there went above and beyond the call of duty as we used to say in the military. Accordingly, I wanted to start a new thread to explore options to the pending completion. So, several systems in play here. I will list two of the three with the presumption that the SSH situation is in play (testing it today from outside of my network).

Systems Currently in Play: Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition with all updates as of today's post: Server: Acer Aspire AST180-400A. It is currently being accessed from Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition with all updates as of today's post from a laptop: Toshiba Satellite A200. Router: Netgear N300 WNR 2000v2. Modem is Motorola Netopia 2210-02-1006. Proposed System To Add: eMachine ET1331G-05w running Windows 7. Why? Well, my girlfriend is terrified to ditch the Bill Hates way of things. It is running through the router currently as well.

What I would like to be able to do is access the Windows 7 desktop via my laptop on the road as well. Specifically, I need to be able to access and view documents and photos. Now, the docs are at least in OpenOffice; she switched to it finally. I would like to also be able to view my desktop to access docs and pictures on the server, but that may be a new thread as the Win7 situation is the priority right now.
