General :: Installed CentOS 5 - When Booting All Mouse (loading)?
Nov 3, 2010
I've installed CentOS lot's of times, but I've never had an issue like this before. It's just a black screen, and all I see is a mouse. I see some drive activity, but I gave it a good hour and it's just sitting there. Not sure what to do here or what's causing the issue. There were no problems during the install. I'm trying to install it on an old Dell PowerEdge 1900 server. Edit: If I go to the console, top is showing X and gdm taking 10+% of the CPU and there's a high load. Which is odd because this is a fresh install..
I installed CentOS on an HP server with 5i RAID controller (so it's hardware RAID) and installed GRUB to the MBR. However, it boots straight to Windows XP without seeing the GRUB loader at all.
Configuration is this.
Windows installed on RAID0 drive CentOS installed on a separate RAID0 Windows fileshare on RAID5
I'm guessing that since the RAID controller doesn't "see" separate drives in each array, that I'll need to do some "fudging" to get it to work, like maybe using Windows' pathetic loader to load GRUB and go from there, but I have no idea how. Do I have to make the drive "seeable" by Windows first by assigning it a drive letter under Windows Disk Manager, and then add it to the bootloader ini file?
I have a strange IDE device that isnt recognized during boot, so I installed via network but after the installation the DVDROm Drive is still not recognized. I found some floppy images with the driver but dont know how to install them:
I'm triple booting (windows, ubuntu and osx86) at the moment but in order to load OSX86, I need to pass "cpus=1" to the kernel otherwise it won't load and the PC just reboots. Can I pass this argument from grub or do I have to install osx to a separate hdd and get grub to load the Darwin bootloader on the second hdd and then pass the argument?
I received a laptop that was running XP home that had crashed. MY son was not able to determine if it was hardware or software. So He installed Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Gnome desktop 2.28.1. Often I have to reboot because freezes. Once I get online, the mouse freezes I have tried an external mouse, it does the same. The Laptop model is a Sony model PCG- 6F1L.
Ist install 11.04, everything excellent-dual boot. usb kb & mouse. everything fine until install ATI upgrade. reboot then cannot use kb/m - so cannot edit or go past login?
OK, so I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside with my other os(XP,win7,XP)nd after some time using it, (3-5 weeks or so) it stopped to boot soon after grub2 menu. First I recovered some of my data, and then I reinstalled ubuntu 10.10 because there is no repair option on the live cd. And yesterday when I wanted to go into ubuntu, after grub2 menu, it froze at the same point (like the last time ) and it never continued.... I need to check where it stops in 2nd option (recovery something) from grub2 and write it down and post it here.
I don't want to reinstall ubuntu again, since this problem will return, probably, and I have to spend some time for customizing and nesting in my ubuntu . I'm not asking for a program or recovery software, ill do it manually when I know how XD
I have been using Ubuntu for quite a while now and have upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 using the upgrade system. However, I now have an issue with Rhythmbox that wasn't there in 9.04 - whenever I load it the mouse stops working and the light on it starts flashing (it is a trackball). It only happens when I load Rythmbox and nothing else I have come across and happens each time. I have tried uninstalling Rhythmbox and re-installing but it is still the same.I have also searched the forum and googled the problem to no avail.I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Intel P4 with 2GB memory, more than sufficient hard disk space spare.
i installed squid 2.6 proxy server on centos 5.4,squid performs services very nice but after reboot the system.it shows a just black screen written with " GRUB_ " and held the boot process, tell me what should i do ?
I'm running windows 7/Ubuntu 11. When I attempt to load into my ubuntu partition, I hear the logging in sequence, but it stays in the loading screen, and I can't do anything. I've found I can get it to log in every fifth time or so, but mostly nothing.
I downloaded the CentOS-5.6-i386-LiveCD.iso and burn it on a CD, as usual. When booting, it does the automatic boot but then crashes, with "Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 354800 (and more)". I am having the same problem with making a boot-able USB. I am not exactly sure what is wrong, I see two folders on the cd LiveOS and isolinux. I'm not sure if it is suppose to be like this, if the burning process when ok. I'm trying to set up a desktop on a pc (with AMD Sempron processor). This is very strange, I ruled out that it couldn't have been my computer (because my Fedora boot disk booted fine), my cd (because it is new and an entirely different brand), or the .iso (because I tested it in VirtualBox, which it booted perfectly).
Files in LiveOS folder: livecd-iso-to-disk osmin.img squashfs.img TRANS.TBL
I've noticed that the majority of the time I will double click an icon to launch and application the cursor activity (mouse loading/busy icon) will not show. The application will launch but there is no indication whatsoever that it's starting up. I haven't had this problem with other Linux distro's and I'm wondering if it's a setting or some sort.
I did notice that on a few applications it works just fine and it will do the loading animation. However, a lot of them will not show it at all. This is very frustrating especially if the application takes a bit to load and you don't know if you even launched it to begin with. Is this a bug or something that can be turned on?
I do hope I explained which animation I'm referring to. It's the circular loading animation that occupies the mouse when you are waiting for an application to finish launching. I'm not entirely sure if this is a gnome thing. Seem to work just fine on my old KDE desktop.

I'm using Ubuntu x64 Desktop 10.10, when I installed XAMPP xampp-linux-1.7.3a.tar.gz and xampp-linux-devel-1.7.3a.tar.gz on my laptop. It's run perfect. But when i installed MongoDB extension on XAMPP and restart XAMPP it's show:
HTML Code: Failed loading /opt/lampp/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/mongo.so: /opt/lampp/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/mongo.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
I tried to install with /opt/lampp/bin/pecl install mongo but it's same error.
I just installed Ubuntu 8.10. While installing no option menu appeared (to make the Ubuntu in the booting list with Window 7).Now Ubuntu doesn't appeares in booting.Installation partition: C
I have installed fedora core 9 with a successful installment but the GRUB is not loading Vista BOOT MGR is Missing root chain loader +1. Booting Other does not load.
I have installed LAMP server in ubuntu 10.04 using sudo tasksel command @ my home and with all the port forwarding and stuff its working fine and i can access it via internet and images load fine, but when i installed LAMP using same exact same command @ my friends place and proper network configs, the php pages load but the images don't load. (Images which are very small in size like less then 5 kb is loading though, like small icons, smileys...)Tried clearing cache, different browsers, different image formats.
I have big troubles with new mouse. It works properly in all cases except booting. It is really strange but if I restart the system (11.3), There is BIOS hdd detection, GRUB (I choose oS 11.3), after I can see about three text lines for short time and after only black screen. And system is halted.
If I disconnect the mouse, reset PC, choose in GRUB, I can see text lines, immediately there is a graphic screen, connect mouse and it works until next reboot.
I downloaded Fedora 13 today and tried the live cd, however, after booting my mouse was a square that is white and scrambled. I am trying the KDE version and it also has no task bar or anything other than a window with icon to install. nothing else is there.
I have been doing some research on problems I have been having and I have narrows Compiz down to being the problem. I am running the prop Nvidea driver. I can use Unity 2d fine however I cannot use Unity at all I just get a blank screen with the mouse cursor no desktop ever loads. I have tried switching between gdm and kdm. I have now worked out that compiz looks like the problem. If I issue a compiz --replace at the terminal I get the same sort of problem I get when I log into the Unity 3d. I loose my left hand monitor (it goes black but I can move my mouse around) and on my right hand monitor I can operate things using the keyboard but when you click with the mouse it does not work although you can move it around fine. Never used Compiz and I dont know if anyone knows any troubleshooting I can try I have exhausted what I could find on the Internet (A few exports of global variables but none fixed anything).
I recently upgraded from Hardy to 9.10 Kubuntu. The install went smoothly, and when I boot up, the loading screen (the one with the progress bar) does its thing. Then I see the 'waiting' cursor (in Kubuntu, the two dots chasing each other around in a circle). I see this for about two to three seconds, then the entire thing freezes up and I can't do anything, including switching to a virtual console. How do I figure out my system's dying words so I can figure out what's going wrong? As a (sort of) aside, when I open files in /var/log for reading with cat <file> | less, I have to Page-Down a whole bunch to get to the most recent stuff. Is there a way to jump to the bottom, or read with something other than what I have been using?
I have just finished installing (after hard work ) Centos 5.4 x86 configured with Snort & Snorby as frontend web, i would like to create from this installation kind of image that could fit to almost any hardware type.
i am trying to upload project to a cvs repository installed on centos 5.4. the problem i am facing is that certain folders from the repository dont get uploaded to the cvs. i dont know the exact reason why? i checked the permission on the folder and the file under the hierarchy but there was no issue , all other projects were sucessfully uploaded .
linux and a good thing to start is to install centos in my pc together with windows xp. please help me on how to dual boot Centos 5.0 and Windows XP pro step by step.
I have installed centos 5 64 bit in my machine but all the dependencies like php, httpd, glibc, gcc, gd, openssl and others are 32 bit, I need them to be updated to 64 bit.
I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal on a External HDD (320GB Samsung S2). Worked like a charm. Bit slow to boot up and load programs, but after a while, works great. I installed it on the external HDD for one purpose: Work anywhere with Ubuntu, no matter which computer I use. I was thinking that was impossible, but I've tested thru several platforms (3 Notebooks, 2 netbooks, all Intel and one AMD Desktop). All worked flawlessly (32 Bits PAE activated and no matter how many cores are active, just works), BUT the themes. For no apparent reason, themes works on the computer I've installed Ubuntu on the HDD. It has his own Internal HDD with Windows 7 and two NTFS partitions.
Themes are stuck to the default boring-white from Gnome. I can only change the window controls. Compiz works, Wireless works, video works, sound works, filesystem works, system works - themes fail. Feels like I've hit my feet's little finger on a chair. P.S.: Ext. HDD is partitioned like this: 300GB FAT32 (it's my pop's HDD, he wants it this way), 18GB EXT4, 2GB Swap.
