I have a 120 gig drive that I'd like to clone before it fails completely. I was thinking I'd pull the drive from the server and build a separate machine that has it's own os installed and the source and destination drive. Does anyone know of any linux tools will will do a full drive copy? Additionally, If possible, I'd like to move to a larger drive. how I'd migrate the 120 drive to a 400 or so? 1 idea I have is to install os on 2 new drives to where it they will boot, Then boot with one and copy source to the newly created destination drive.

I was curious if there is any way to clone my system by simply writing into a file which packages are installed AND deinstalled on the source system.
The reason is that I configured a system which fits me just right (I installed some additional packages and removed some standard packages like OpenOffice...) and was wanting to back it up - even for a newer Ubuntu-Version.
Most of the changes are already gone in /var/log/dpkg.log... so this option does not exist...Does anyone know where Synaptic stores the information which package is installed and which is not? It is possible to view those packages by applying a filter.
Id like to know if its possible to somehow copy an EXACT copy of my linux from one computer to "paste" on another!
And how would I be able to do this?
I am trying to clone the hard drive to a slightly smaller hard drive in the same computer, same setup. What software or commands do you use to clone the entire system and resize the partition automatically? The original HD is a little larger than the destination HD. The source partition only has about 20 GB in use and the rest is blank.
I have 2 partition, a small 100MB boot partition and another 500GB LVM partition.I can't just clone from the original disk to the new disk. (for another long reason) I need to make an image of the original disk on an external USB drive first, then move that image onto a new disk.I have tried creating an image of the whole disk with Clonezilla, but then the restoration didn't work because the target drive is smaller than the original.
our oracle(oracle 10G) server got a serious problem, the OS is SLES 9 SP4, two HBA adapters(QLogic 2340) with NetApp FC Storage(FAS3140), we have installed multipath-tools on this server and ensure that physical connection and swith configuration are correct, but we only can see a path

Is there a firewall installed and running in 10.04? If so are there any gui tools for configuring it and where are they? If there is not a firewall, what should I install to get one properly up and running?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt used to be that the dvd menu offered an option to "repair the installed system". THis was really very convenient. The openSUSE 11.3 dvd for x86 now only gives a "system rescue" option which leads to command line directl. Where have been "the repair the installed system" tools? How can we access them now? What is a reasonable set of tips that's supposed to be used after logging into "system rescue"?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI run a VMware clone of CentOS 5.3, I observe that kudzu [i.e. /etc/init.d/kudzu, from /etc/rc3.d/S05kudzu or /etc/rc5.d/S05kudzu] detects a MAC address change on eth0 and then creates a /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.bak file. This .bak file is identical to the original ifcfg-eth0 file except for the value of the HWADDR [i.e. MAC address] parameter. I would be unconcerned but for the fact that /usr/bin/neat indicates that both ifcfg-eth0 AND ifcfg-eth0.bak are 'Active'. The following solution may help others with the same (or similar) problem:

2.6.18-194.8.1.el5xen is the reported kernel that I'm running while the headers that are installed are listed as 2.6.18-194.8.1.el5-i686. I assume these are the same, or at least close enough that it shouldn't matter.
However, when I run vmware-config-tools.pl to configure it it says it cannot find the kernel headers. I've tried pointing it to /usr/src/2.6.18-194.8.1.el5-i686/ and /usr/src/2.6.18-194.8.1.el5-i686/include (not sure which of the two I'm supposed to do as online instructions contradict one another) it says that is invalid and there seems to be no way to force it since it just complains without letting me use it anyway. What can I do? Running centos 5 btw on vmware workstation 7.

I see some drive activity, but I gave it a good hour and it's just sitting there. Not sure what to do here or what's causing the issue. There were no problems during the install. I'm trying to install it on an old Dell PowerEdge 1900 server. Edit: If I go to the console, top is showing X and gdm taking 10+% of the CPU and there's a high load. Which is odd because this is a fresh install..

View 7 Replies View RelatedI made a mistake with lvm2 on centos 5.2.
I used parted to create a partition inside the logical volume, and then merrily used that partition, which appeared as /dev/pv-whatever/lv-whateverp1
Of course I created the FS as ext3.
So, after a reboot, I can't access anything in that logical volume with standard tools, as /dev/pv-whatever now only has the lv-whatever special file inside.
I can look inside the LV with parted fine, but parted can't copy ext3 filesystems.
Is there any way to get the data out of a partition created INSIDE a logical volume if that filesystem is ext3?
