I received a laptop that was running XP home that had crashed. MY son was not able to determine if it was hardware or software. So He installed Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Gnome desktop 2.28.1. Often I have to reboot because freezes. Once I get online, the mouse freezes I have tried an external mouse, it does the same. The Laptop model is a Sony model PCG- 6F1L.
View 1 RepliesI'm just starting out using linux and so I installed Ubuntu to a hard disk. I noticed that after 30 minutes or so, the mouse pointer would simply stop moving while the keyboard was o.k. Exact same problem with Fedora as well. (The mouse works fine in Vista (it's a MS Comfort mouse 1000)) I searched and found a suggestion that I should disable the sleep settings, so I did that but no luck.
Interestingly, there is no freezing of the mouse when I use the Ubuntu Live CD - it's only the hard-disk-installed Ubuntu that's having the problem. Update Found some old links from 2009 that say I should remove the "mouseemu" package. How to remove that package? Update Unfortunately, that did not help - there is no mouseemu pkg installed. I tried setting kernel boot options noapic, irqpoll etc. - no luck. This is so annoying.
I've upgraded my ubuntu from 9.04 -> 9.10. But after reboot, my mouse & keyboard become freeze. I did some search and found some advice about mannauly configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf but unsuccess.

I've installed CentOS lot's of times, but I've never had an issue like this before. It's just a black screen, and all I see is a mouse. I see some drive activity, but I gave it a good hour and it's just sitting there. Not sure what to do here or what's causing the issue. There were no problems during the install. I'm trying to install it on an old Dell PowerEdge 1900 server. Edit: If I go to the console, top is showing X and gdm taking 10+% of the CPU and there's a high load. Which is odd because this is a fresh install..
View 3 Replies View Relatedjust want to report "Right Mouse Click Freeze" on Ubuntu 10.10. When I click on anything with my right mouse button to open options menu it freezes and does not open menu. Sometimes when I shake my mouse left/right a bit it opens that menu, but this does not work always. It seems like xserver issue, but I'm not sure since I'm not expert in linux yet. It's very annoying issue that I would like to resolve asap.

The mouse, and keyboard, freezes at random times? When I search the discussion boards for a solution to this problem, it is overwhelming to see how many others are having the same difficulty, yet I haven't come across specific solution(s) to the problem. (One posting has over 180 pages of comments!) I am still using Jaunty but would like to move up to 10.04, which I have installed on a separate partition. Unfortunately, that partition can't be used by my family because it freezes at random times! Naturally, I am unable to get any more updates with Jaunty. (I never had problem with Jaunty freezing.) Incidentally, I tried Linux Mint, which was a adaptation of Ubuntu 10.04 and had the same problem.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI hadn't done any major updates for about a couple weeks, and then I downloaded a whole bunch - 100+ mb worth. One of these updates was the new kernel 2.6.32-23 (I'm now on the 2.6.32-24 kernel with no improvement). After doing these updates my computer froze at the point where the 5 white dots (10.04) became red upon booting. Since then it generally crashes about every 2nd boot. Also, the times when it does boot, it takes a bit longer to boot (maybe 5-10 secs).
It's no longer snappy like the 10.04 it was just prior to doing the updates.Today it seemed to freeze during login with the prompt still showing once I'd put in my details. When I say it freezes, nothing is happening but I can still do CTRL+ALT+DELETE to reboot the computer, so it's not a full freeze. I've been asked does the old kernel crash it and having tried it once or twice I think it still crashed once. So perhaps it's not the kernel.
I am conidering installing Fedora 13, but a while ago, I don't remember if it was F12 or F12 rawhide, but I was having problems with 3d stuff. Whenever I would try to run a 3d program, Everything except the mouse would freeze and become unresponseive, so i reverted to F11. I read somewhere it was because of my GPU. Its an ATI Radeon X600. Has anyone had any trouble with this in F13?

THE PROBLEM : gnome 3 freeze sometimes, the PC is freeze (the mouse doesn't move when i move the mouse. I must power down my PC for re-activate it. I want to shift to gnome 2 (i think gnome3 is excellent but it don't work) but it seems to be impossible. What i can do ? Does-it exist some combinaisons (like ctl+alt+suppr on windows) for keep the control ?
I am running Ubuntu 10.04, randomly while working in gnome with no particular application I get a freeze periodically. Neither the mouse or the keyboard will respond. I am running it on a lenovo Z61m laptop. I have had previous experience with Posix systems but I am a recent migrant from XP as my primary operating system. I never had such an issue with this computer which leads me to believe that it is not a hardware issue.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo when i initially boot (both using wubi and a usb stick.) it will start to go and then do the alternative boot option with a 5 second count down. Then if I'm lucky it will get passed that then either a black screen with just a flashing _ on it and it will freeze there. Or it will go to the ubuntu opening with the little dots for initial boot and it freezes there. (the dots don't move more then two and then it really freezes.) My specs are

I have a problem with mouse and keyboard. Both freeze within 30sec to half an hour after logging into squeeze 64bit (using gnome). My hardware is Asus P7P55D EVO (tested with linux according to ASUS) with Intel i5 760 CPU. I use IBM keyboard and Trust PS2 mouse. I also have MSI HD4350 graphics card, that was at least listed on Ubuntu to be supported, worked fine also with Lenny.
When using same combination with Lenny (64-bit) I never found any problem with either keyboard nor mouse, even running long nights. However there was need to upgrade to Squeeze since it has newer kernel supporting the sensors on board my MB. I used same mouse and keyboard also on Ubuntu 9.10 and had never problems. However when I upgraded to new MB I started with Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit version and experienced same keyboard and mouse freeze as I have now in squeeze. Only way out from this status is hard reset using PC reset button.
I connected with putty to my linux box and found following (while the linux box was on frozen state) from dmesg on keyboard: :/var/log$ dmesg | grep -i keyboard [ 1.064628] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input0
Little background info: I have a computer where the hdd crashed. Bought a new hdd tonight and installed it. As the computer had no operating system at this point I put in a copy of the live cd and begin to install Ubuntu 9.10(32 bit)...everything went smooth with the install (at least I think). My problem is that when I get to the login screen, I click on my user name to type in my password but as soon as I click on either my user name or guest it basically freezes...Mouse still moves but can't do anything with login or the options on the bottom right of the screen...
Right when it freezes the pixels under the login box mess up, looks like some type of graphics problem?? I'm not sure, but I can't be the first person with this problem Also after it "freezes" I can't utilize the ctl+alt+f1 command either
Multi GPU - Mouse and Keyboard Freeze once enabled Previously on Ubuntu Karmic I had multi GPU setup without a problem.System consists of three ATI radeon HD 3600 series (multi head) running 6 monitors.
Setting it up was was easy as on Microsoft windows. All I did was download the ati catalyst and issue the following command: aticonfig --initial=dual-head --adapter=all
That created the perfect xorg.conf. With the amdcccle desktop, I then rearranged the monitors around to my setup and enabled xinerama. I thus had a total of six monitors working without a problem. (Naturally with compiz turned off).
- UPGRADING TO LUCID BIGGEST MISTAKE -
Yesterday the update manager popped up Lucid Ubuntu 10.04 Release available. I upgraded. I got the same issue of fglrx.. Reading through Forum I deleted the /usr/share/ati folder. uninstalled the catalyst. Rebooted in safe mode and then re-installed via synatic fglrx and amdcccle. All went well.
I then issued the basic command.
aticonfig --initial -f
This created the standard xorg.conf. On rebooting machine. My first two screens (off the first Radeon HD 3600) worked fine, without a problem. (See attached file)
I then issued
aticonfig --initial=dual-head --adapter=all.
This created the long xorg.conf file for all the cards on the system to work.
BUMPER !! Machine reboots and right before the X login screen appears all of a sudden my monitor screen goes into "Digital Power saving mode" and the monitor goes to sleep. Keyboard and Mouse are not responsive (All freeze). No alternative but to cold boot the machine and restart.
I have tried everything, each time mouse and keyboard just freeze.
I downloaded and burnt the Kubuntu 10.04 release to a CD. I tried to install it. First time, couldn't find the disks and eventually it froze. Ok, second try, when it's contacting the "time server" (or whatever) another freeze, but this time I notice everything is running fine and then get a nice little image with the current time (increasing seconds and all). Third attemp, clicked the "update this installer" and it went fine. "Yay!" I thought. Well, a few minutes in my beautiful 10.04 system and again, another freeze. Hit the power button and to my surprise a "Shutdown" dialog shows up with a countdown. After 30 seconds it logs out and mouse is working again. I log back in and come here to write this long post, and as I was writing the title "Random mouse/ke..." guess what? Yeah, it froze again. And the little bar that goes after the writing continued happily blinking. Hit the power button but this time mouse and keyboard were still frozen in the login screen.
Short version: mouse and keyboard randomly freeze while the rest of the system apparently work fine.
I have Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition i386 version. It was recently working fine until i installed few updates that showed in Update Manager about total size of 200Mb. During the installation BUG USB (blue screen) error comes and laptop restarted. Now i restarted the laptop and from now my mouse and the keyboard not working. I am not able to even login to the system. Not working now anything.. Details: I am running Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop i386 on VMWare Workstation on Windows Vista.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm a long time user of CentOS 5 w/KDE 3.5. I have always had this problem to various degrees no matter what installation of CentOS 5 I'm currently on. This same hardware does not exhibit the same symptoms with another OS.The problem is I regularly have many konsole instances open. I alt-tab between them frequently. Inevitably a random alt-tab will freeze the keyboard and the mouse won't be able to click anything although I can move the mouse cursor around. I can't type anything. It seems to have some sort of timeout and it always come back to responsiveness.
I alleviated this problem (I think) by switching keyboards, installing the nvidia driver instead of the nv driver, shutting down all non-essential services.I have seen these symptoms on every system I have installed CentOS 5 where KDE 3.5 was also installed. Very different hardware setups each time.Has anyone else run into similar symptoms?I'm surprised that it's just CentOS 5 w/KDE 3.5 that exhibits this behaviour on the same hardware where other operating systems (gentoo, suse, etc.) did not exhibit these symptoms.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately, I've encountered a disaster the likes of which I've never seen before:Yesterday, in slackware 13.1, while using firefox, the window would no longer move or resize, and I could no longer click on things in that window.While this happens, the icons in xfce4 panel no longer acknowledge that the mouse is rolling over them, so I can't launch terminal from a panel, etc.; however I am still able to right click on desktop and open terminal and other apps that way.Since it was high time to upgrade to 13.37, and since I was experiencing weirdness, I decided to do a clean install: I actually repartitioned my drive, and reformatted the partitions (all xfs, and after backing up my data, of course)...
I don't know if that's significant, or not. there seems to be some lines in /var/log/Xorg.0.log about my logitech mouse.way too complicated to write by hand.I will log out and back on... sometimes that frees up other windows. Then I'll add the Xorg.0.log.
1) Any process (including boot, shutdown, download, open programs, etc) is freeze (don't have any progress) until I move the mouse or hit any button, so for install and use my ubuntu I have to keep moving my mouse and as you imagine is VERY TIRED.2) I get some general freeze on random times, neither the mouse, keyboard or process move, I notice that if I unplug power it unfreze, and I can work for some time.This 2 problems annoy me a lot, and I suspect is a problem related to my Netbook Model, I read about someone that has the same problem but no solution there.
This is what I did:I Try Ubuntu loading from my USB memory (1GB), run very good but with the 2 problems, but I thought it can be resolved installing.I installed along side with W7, couldn't boot Ubuntu, so I configured GRUB2 and it could enter now, but if I don't press **** after selecting Ubuntu it give me the BusyBox, and then the same 2 problems.I get rid of my W7 and did a Full Install on my 160GB HDD, hoping it can work fine, but no.I install all updates and no effect on that.
I'm experiencing random lockups. There are 2 types.1st time this happened when I enabled Kwin compositing effects. The screen turned black and it froze, the mouse pointer froze. Nothing would move. 5 Minutes later I just hard reset the Laptop. I was afraid something could be corrupted as it was shutdown in a bad way. On boot up Kwin's compositing effects were in place.Randomly working on the laptop, everything will freeze except the mouse pointer. This happens like once in a while though.I have a feeling this has something to do with my Dell Studio 1555 Intel GM4500 MHD graphics.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed xorg-edgers around the time the issue started, but I install and uninstall packages so often its hard to tell if this was the cause. Regardless, I ppa-purged the xorg-edgers ppa, reinstalled the proprietary nvidia drivers, and created a new user account, to no avail. I also wiped the /tmp directory, and reinstalled compiz, and tried dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg.
So far nothing has worked; I've checked out dmesg and /var/log/syslog, and nothing seems to be amiss, but admittedly I'm not sure what exactly to look for. I have a feeling its an issue with X being broken now, regardless of my attempts to downgrade, but I don't know how to go about correcting it.
I have big troubles with new mouse. It works properly in all cases except booting. It is really strange but if I restart the system (11.3), There is BIOS hdd detection, GRUB (I choose oS 11.3), after I can see about three text lines for short time and after only black screen. And system is halted.
If I disconnect the mouse, reset PC, choose in GRUB, I can see text lines, immediately there is a graphic screen, connect mouse and it works until next reboot.
I downloaded Fedora 13 today and tried the live cd, however, after booting my mouse was a square that is white and scrambled. I am trying the KDE version and it also has no task bar or anything other than a window with icon to install. nothing else is there.
