View 1 RepliesI have been using CentOS 5. for around 3 months. It was all fine and was having a pleasant experience using CentOS. Today when i turned on my computer and booted CentOS i am having the below error: Grub comes up, allows me to select CentOS 5.4 kernel image. and displays RedHat Nash version: and then the below error occurs:

I'm relatively new to Linux, and have broken many more things than I have fixed.. I guess that's the learning process eh? So here's my problem: I've been experimenting with the mount command, and have mounted my local file system (sda1) to a directory (/mnt/test). I was attempting to mount an external hard drive, and sda1 clearly was not the correct drive (I did eventually discover where the external was located, however sda1 remains tied to that directory). I rebooted my system, and now the Grub command prompt loads. When I type "boot" I'm presented with "Error 8: Kernel must be loaded before booting". I'm assuming this is because I mounted my local file system, but I could be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas how I could remedy this?

When I rebooted I got the grub> prompt. As I have already shut down and rebooted several times over the last couple of weeks, I could not se why this happened, so I rebooted and stiull got the same problem. Things I have tried:

I am currently using a 64 bit ASUS P75P55-M motherboard.
I'm booting ubuntu from my android phone via USB and it works great, the thing is anything i install or do while using ubuntu isnt saved the next time i boot from the usb unless its saved in my phones storage. I want to be able to keep booting ubuntu the same way but keep the programs i install there for the next time instead ohttp://mac.bigresource.com/add/add.phpf starting from scratch everytime.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed fedora 10 using the GUI install, and when I try to boot, it gets me to the grub command line
grub>
when i enter 'boot', it gives me grub error 8: kernel must be loaded before booting. Not sure how to fix this.
Also, I used to have fedora 9, and i had an option to boot fedora or 'other', which is windows. How do I go about setting up something similar in this case?
EDIT:
Also, when I type root, it tells me that the partition (hd2,0) (i assume the one i installed FC10: 3rd hdd, first partition) is an unspecified file system ...
I think something happened to grub when it removed my old partition with FC9...

What is this Above Error which I am getting , on my server
I've installed CentOS lot's of times, but I've never had an issue like this before. It's just a black screen, and all I see is a mouse. I see some drive activity, but I gave it a good hour and it's just sitting there. Not sure what to do here or what's causing the issue. There were no problems during the install. I'm trying to install it on an old Dell PowerEdge 1900 server. Edit: If I go to the console, top is showing X and gdm taking 10+% of the CPU and there's a high load. Which is odd because this is a fresh install..
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install a dual booting machine with OpenSUSE v11.1 32bit and CentOS v5.2 64bit. I installed OpenSUSE first and allowed it to install and configure grub in the MBR and after that I wanted to proceed with CentOS v5.2. The installation went fine with two notable exceptions:- when I had to configure grub installation parameters, CentOS offered me only 2 solutions: either install it on the MBR of the first hard disk or not installing it at all. Other distributions are more flexible allowing you to install it in the boot sector of the root partition for example. Because I didn't want to ruin the existent grub onfiguration, I reluctantly accepted not to install it for CentOS assuming that I could manually configure the entry later in grub's menu.lst file.
- when I was presented with the options for software components installation, I've clicked on virtualization category/function because I intend to use the machine as a VMware host. There was no guidance on screen at that point and I blindly assumed that by choosing the virtualization function I would get necessary tools and drivers that will help me further on. It seems that this was a wrong move as you can see it below.
After completing the installation, I tried to search for a template or guiding on how the menu entry in menu.lst should look like but the grub directory was empty, not surprisingly because I've told CentOS earlier not to install it. Using the files in the /boot directory from the CentOS installation I tried to improvise a menu entry but it's not working. The boot stops with famous Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format. Using the file command to check what kind of files I'm trying to load as kernels I'm getting :

I have been having a lot of trouble lately with installing from CD/DVD. The DVD reader/writer on this laptop is new. Nevertheless, trying to install Ubuntu onto an exernal HD, I get 'input output error on sr0 logical block (a large number) After a long time the booting proceeds to a point, but I never get the actual installation started, and have to shut down manually.
The CD is fine, says the Ubuntu-checker. I just installed using my sons laptop, and there was no trouble. Question: does this indicate a motherboard failure? A memory block damaged? Do you know of a diagnostic tool I can use to check the reading of a CD/DVD?
I just installed slack 13.37. I was poking around a little and I noticed that I have all these modules loaded... yet when I open up /etc/rc.d/rc.modules almost everything is commented out. how are these modules being loaded at boot time?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get Ubuntu 10.04 running on a PCM-9343 board from Advantech. To do so I followed the instructions in this file from DM&P [URL] I installed a text-only Ubuntu using the alternate installer on a CF card that was connected to my PC. After reboot I downloaded the given kernel and updated the installation on the card, as said in the instructions. Inserting the card into the PCM-9343 gives a working Ubuntu Installation. So far so good.
The only thing not working is networking. The ethernet adapter is not loaded on boot, neither can I up it after logging in using "ifup -a". I found out, that the driver was not loaded during booting, i.e. the module r6040 didn't show up on "lsmod". The module is included in the modified kernel, that I downloaded from the producer's page. So I added it to /etc/modules and rebooted. Now it's loaded, but still no eth0. Ifup -a gives the following messages:

I created a encrypted volume on top of software raid1. These are my steps:
1. Create logical partition on sda
2. Create logical partition on sdb (same size)
3. Change type to partition to 'fd' for both partitions
4. Check that the both partitions are same size and type fdisk -l /dev/sda && fdisk -l /dev/sdb
5. partprobe
6. Make sure there are no remains from previous RAID installations on /dev/sdb by running: mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sda6 mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sdb6
7. mdadm --create /dev/md4 --level=1 --raid-disks=2 /dev/sda6 /dev/sdb6
8. watch cat /proc/mdstat
9. update mdadm.conf mdadm --examine --scan | grep mdx >> /etc/mdadm.conf
10. Load twofish module [root@localhost ~]# modprobe twofish
11. # cryptsetup -y -c twofish-cbc-essiv:sha256 create ftdata /dev/md4 Enter passphrase: Verify passphrase:
12. mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 -R stride=8 /dev/mapper/ftdata
13. mkdir /ftdata
14. Mount the encrypted volume:
mount -O noatime /dev/mapper/ftdata /ftdata
It mounts successfully this first time. When I cd /ftdata, I can see the lost+found dir

So why is it that I can't mount my encrypted volume after the first time? I am giving the correct password when it asks to.

Downgrade like so: 1) Get the driver from [URL]... 2) Go to terminal, and move the pre-installed driver so it won't get loaded. cd /lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/ sudo mv rt2860sta.ko rt2860sta.bak. 3) Install rt2860-dkms_1.7.1.1_all.deb. It will also install dependencies needed to compile the driver. If it doesn't retrieve the right packages, make sure "build-essential", "linux-header-generic" and "dkms" is installed. Let it run and it should complete without a problem. 4) Restart. The new driver should work automatically. the deb file gives me an error.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a CentOS 5.3 server. All of the other computers I have are Windows or Ubuntu. The Ubuntu machines sync to the time on the CentOS machine correctly. The problem is, some of the windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP Pro machines are an hour off when they sync. The CentOS machine is set to New York time.
When I run: (Assume the time is currently 10:06 AM on the server) net time \xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx /set /yes
On the correct machines I get the message:
Current time at \xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is 11/1/2010 10:06 AM
The command completed successfully.
But on the other machines I get:
Current time at \xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is 11/1/2010 9:06 AM
Local time (GTM-04:00) at \xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is 11/1/2010 10:06 AM
The command completed successfully.
Then the time on the windows computer is 9:06 instead of 10:06.
Is there something that needs changed on the CentOS Machine for the times to be correct?
I upgraded F10 to F11 successfully.
Then I convert the / partition filesystem by the following steps:login as root user in multi user mode read [url], and execute tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 modify /etc/fstab, change the type of / to ext4
reboot
(because fsck say running it on a mounted filesystem can cause filesystem damage, so i decide to reboot to single user mode first. maybe it's a mistake here) try to boot F11 to single user mode, failed
reboot from a SystemRescueCD-1.2.0 LiveCD
run e2fsck -fpDC0 /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 in SystemRescueCD-1.2.0 LiveCD, no error reported
reboot
try to boot F11 normally(multi user mode), but it failed at: EXT3-fs: dm-0: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (40).
I tried rescue mode of Fedora-11-i386-netinst.iso after these steps above. The / partition can be found and mounted to /mnt/sysimage correctly. I can read/write files in / partition, and i can even yum new softwares in rescue mode, but it just can't be mounted when booting.
I've just moved a server across to CentOS 5.5 64-bit and I have been trying to get some custom software running on it. However I'm getting an unusual error during run time:
sched_setaffinity: Invalid argument
I've had this software working on a old versions of Gentoo (2.6.12-gentoo-r6) and Fedora. And the latest version of Ubuntu server 10.04.1. (All 64 bit). It looks remarkable similar to:
Core test failed on s390x RHEL6
If v7 bug fix and enhancement update has been incorporated into CentOS 5.5 64 bit yet? Or how I might find out.
Each time I try to run my Windows virtual box, I got this error: Quote: Kernel driver not installed (rc=-190
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'
as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. Which is fine, so I run sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup as requested and then it works. But I have to do this EVERY TIME I use Virtual box. This step takes a minute or two to do its thing, so it's quite time consuming.
I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a machine, unfortunately, the hard drive was ext3 partitioned. Is there a way of converting this partition to ext4 without having to re-format and hence reinstall the entire OS ?
