View 1 RepliesI posted this as a bug: [URL]
On Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, 64-bit, 2.6.32-22-generic kernel When I log into the system, the speaker icon in the upper bar is black (just an outline) suggesting there is no sound output available. After further inspection I found that the snd-hda-intel kernel module isn't getting loaded.
I have to load the module myself (using 'modprobe snd-hda-intel') every time I turn on the computer.
I'm having this problem since some time ago, in which the wallpaper won't load at startup. I have to manually go to the Appearance Manager and load it.
Isn't there a way to do this automatically at startup? I know it's kind of a minor thing, but I'm all for aesthetics of my pc.
Since several months ago (I think when I upgraded to Karmic), whatever program I add to session startup won't load on boot, and no icon appears at the top-right of the screen, only clock and shutdown button (no audio etc.). [URL] didn't help, nor did searching in forums and bugs. I've enabled debug to /etc/gdm/custom.conf, and this is my .xsession-errors first part:
Code:
Unable to create /home/name/.dbus/session-bus
(gnome-settings-daemon:1957): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion `src != NULL' failed
(gnome-settings-daemon:1957): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion `src != NULL' failed

Unable to find a synaptics device .....
I removed .recently-used.xbel to avoid recently opened files to be logged, so this explains part of these errors. I had disabled gnome-screensaver but now I would need it to automate screen lock and looks like dbus may be the problem. My .dbus directory is empty.
I have this problem across all my computers running Ubuntu (Lucid and Maverick installations). It works sometimes but it's hit and miss. Sometimes it will load up an iso no problem and i have a start up flash stick in no length of time. Other time's it will not load up an iso. I have tried formatting my flash drive these times but it doesn't make a difference as the drive is always recognised by the program yet i sometimes can't load an iso. When this happens i find that i generally have the same problem at the same time on my other Ubuntu installations. I find it weird. Anyway it's very frustrating when i come across another distro that i really want to try out and i cannot load the iso in the program.

I can also manually can start, stop, and restart on it. However, it does not launch on startup. I can find no messages in /var/log/syslog showing any attempt to start it. Did I miss a step?

I have been using Ubuntu for quite a while now and have upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 using the upgrade system.However, I now have an issue with Rhythmbox that wasn't there in 9.04 - whenever I load it the mouse stops working and the light on it starts flashing (it is a trackball).It only happens when I load Rythmbox and nothing else I have come across and happens each time. I have tried uninstalling Rhythmbox and re-installing but it is still the same.I have also searched the forum and googled the problem to no avail.I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Intel P4 with 2GB memory, more than sufficient hard disk space spare.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter the upgrades have installed on my installation of Ubuntu 10.4 (there were some kernel upgrades, I don't remember if there was any libc update there) it asked me to do a reboot. So I did and I got that error when Ubuntu was starting:
Code:
/bin/sh: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libc.so.6: invalid ELF header
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
And if I run Ubuntu in recovery mode there's what I get after this:
Code:
Pid: 1, comm: init: Not tainted 2.6.32-22-generic #35-Ubuntu
There's also Call Trace after this, and a bit of text there, but as I'm rewriting those errors from a photo captured (because I cannot find logs of this in /var/log/) I will skip it unless it's needed to solve the problem. EDIT1: I cannot find anybody who had this problem during startup, there are only guys who had this during compiling or installing software
I am using ubuntu 10.04 and made some changes in Xorg.conf to try enabling twinview. Unfortunately, Ubuntu just stops at the startup logo now. Is there a way I can stop the loading of X, so I can undo the error in Xorg.conf and hopefully make Ubuntu load normally again? Grub automatically loads Ubuntu, there is no Grub menu that allows loading of some alternative config.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I startup Rhythmbox music player I have no library. Whats strange is when I click edit/preferences/music and then browse to select my library location (which is already correct), apon selecting the hard drive that my library is on the whole music library suddenly loads and I don't have to re-select my library folder, I just cancel the preferences window. But if I just wait for Rhythmbox to load the library without beginning to remind it where it is, it never loads.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that the majority of the time I will double click an icon to launch and application the cursor activity (mouse loading/busy icon) will not show. The application will launch but there is no indication whatsoever that it's starting up. I haven't had this problem with other Linux distro's and I'm wondering if it's a setting or some sort.
I did notice that on a few applications it works just fine and it will do the loading animation. However, a lot of them will not show it at all. This is very frustrating especially if the application takes a bit to load and you don't know if you even launched it to begin with. Is this a bug or something that can be turned on?
I do hope I explained which animation I'm referring to. It's the circular loading animation that occupies the mouse when you are waiting for an application to finish launching. I'm not entirely sure if this is a gnome thing. Seem to work just fine on my old KDE desktop.
I've installed CentOS lot's of times, but I've never had an issue like this before. It's just a black screen, and all I see is a mouse. I see some drive activity, but I gave it a good hour and it's just sitting there. Not sure what to do here or what's causing the issue. There were no problems during the install. I'm trying to install it on an old Dell PowerEdge 1900 server. Edit: If I go to the console, top is showing X and gdm taking 10+% of the CPU and there's a high load. Which is odd because this is a fresh install..

I have updated from 10.2 to 11.1. When 11.1 starts I get into the CLI rather than an automatic startup of KDE. I can login at the CLI, then type "startx" to start KDE. I know there is someway to automatically start KDE when the computer boots, but just can't seem to find it. Can someone point me in the right direction? With 10.2 I was able to automatically load KDE as myself as user and would like to have that again in 11.1.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe mouse has been working fine ever since we got Ubuntu 10.04, until I switched monitors. For some reason, after changing monitors from 4:3 to 16:9 and back, (changing the output res in the process), the mouse doesn't appear when starting up the computer. It still highlights things, and it will pop up completely when searching for something on Google Chrome, and a few other things. But for some reason, the mouse doesn't appear right away when starting up the computer. I'm not sure why this happened -- I'm new to Ubuntu, (used to Windows)
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is weird. When I start my computer, the cursor is frozen in place and the only way I have been able to get it moving is to do a hard restart. This has be a consistent problem for last few days. What's going on? How do I correct it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen booting up my system today, it got until the login screen, but both keyboard and mouse were inactive. The login window had a triangle (as if to start a video) that I cannot remember having seen before. what is going on and how to get in? I am running Lucid Lynx and KDE.
View 8 Replies View RelatedSometimes when I reboot, I go to log on only to find that the mouse won't move and the keyboard does nothing. Well, the mouse moves, it's not glued to the desk or anything. But it doesn't move the cursor. The first few times this happened, I found that it was a music player or other USB device plugged in that somehow created confusion or something. So if I unplugged them and booted up again, everything was fine. And by booting up again, I mean I have to hold down the power button and forcibly shut the thing off, since I obviously can't do it the nice way with no mouse or keyboard.
Anyway, it's been doing it now more often, even with nothing plugged into the front USB ports. But I have found that if I disconnect my external hard drive, it boots up fine again. But that's obnoxious, because that hard drive is online as much as the computer itself, because it's my main repository for files. So I have to unplug the USB from the back of it, hold the cable so it doesn't fall behind the desk, turn on the computer, and then log in one-handed while I hold the cable (because if I just plug it back in before the desktop shows, it doesn't mount properly).
And I know it's an Ubuntu thing rather than a general computer thing because the bios options work just fine. In fact, the little NumLock light is on until the moment that Ubuntu starts up and shows the login dialog.
I have a MS bluethooth keyboard/mouse, and a USB bluetooth dongle
In 10.1 I can add both with no problems - but I have to explicitly tell ubuntu to connect to the devices at each machine reboot, which means plugging in a wired mouse first
Does anyone know how I can set the machine to connect automatically at every startup to both my keyboard and my mouse? I found a set of instructions here:
[URL]
But it is from 2007 and I'm not sure its still correct?
I have a HP Mini 311c that has an ALPS touchpad. Linux Mint detects it as a mouse and so when I try to increase the speed of the mouse, nothing actually happens. I've created a script which includes just the following code:
#!bin/bash
xset m 5 2
This is saves as startup-script.hl on my Desktop. I then go into Startup Applications and add the script in there. But when I reboot my Netbook the mouse is moving at its default slow speed. I've ensured the script file is allowed to execute (right click > properties > permissions) and have also tried copying it to the init.d folder with no luck.
One thing I have noticed though is that straight after I login to Mint the mouse cursor does move at the speed I want, but after a few seconds reverts back to the slow speed.
Everything worked fine in Kubuntu 10.04 (64-bit). On the upgrade to 10.10 (64-bit) it takes about a minute until I can move the mouse after startup and the integrated memory card reader doesn't work (but the green LED which used to only come on when there was a card in there is now always on). This has been discussed twice before: here (closed and solved by unplugging cardreader which I do not want to do) and here (unsolved but closed as maverick no longer in beta) dmesg (note the errer -110) follows. Let me know if I can/should include any other logs/info!

Was running out of room on / and set in Yast to delete /tmp on startup. Also deleted /var/log and /var/tmp while logged in. Rebooted and now mouse and keyboard (both USB) not working. Keyboard works on grub menu. Also works now in XP. Tried reconnecting (sync & plug unplug) different usb ports and nothing. Gave it a few minutes on startup and still nothing. Plugged in a PS2 keyboard and the lights just blink after startup and it will not work either.

I've been trying to load my pcmcia network card driver "xirc2ps_cs" at startup with no success. I have added "modprobe xirc2ps_cs" to the rc.modules file but it doesn't load at startup. Curiously, though, if I execute rc.modules AFTER the machine has booted it will load the modules just fine. Just not during the boot up process. Thinking that hotstart might have been causing problems I've disabled hotstart (chmod -x) temporarilly to remove it from the picture, but there was no change.
