I have decided to do away with windows for the obvious reasons. I have carried out a new instal of Ubuntu 10.04. on a formatted HDD in a Gigabyte GA-510UD atom mother board and have found that I can't install the M/B drivers from the indtall disk.

I've found hints of Linux and many sources for Windows drivers, but so far haven't turned up any candidates for my Debian Lenny system.
I want to start using Ubuntu again but I gave up ages ago trying to get it to work with my Gigabyte EP45-DQ6 motherboard.I cant run from disc and I can't install.If I try to run it just takes me to a black screen with blinking cursor and that's all it does.If I try to install, basically the same.I can't get anywhere doing anything, so where do I start?How can I get it working on my system?By the way, this is with the latest Ubuntu.No, it's not a corrupt download or burn. I recently set up a Samba Server on a new Gigabyte (Desktop) Motherboard with support for SATA 3.0. I used a new 1T SATA 3.0 (6Gb) Hard Drive. The system is performing poorly, seems to have problems both opening and closing files (*.dbf).
Also will hold a file as open periodically (may be a Samba Issue).
Does the O/S have to support this standard, or is it a function of the Hardware...?
I have wild idea to build a new Ubuntu computer from scratch. This is a great motherboard with lots of features, planning to have a RAID, and an AMD 64 bit processor(s). I want to be sure that I am installing the correct drivers..can anyone point me to a 'guide' to building a computer such as this?

Checked cable/network with 386Box running Ubuntu 8.04 all OK. Could not get Realtek 8168 on mother board to work on Gigabyte H55M-S2H motherboard. I tried to install r8168 driver but no luck ... so I bought another Linux compatible card which turned out to be a RTL8139c (eth1) and the driver I am using on this is card is 8139too.

My preference would be to get the motherboard ethernet working but perhaps the card may be easier to get working. Anyway after searching the net for ideas and trying different things I've just about given up. I have reinstalled Ubuntu today so eth0 is back to using the r8169 driver. I'm no expert so my attempts at following other recipies have so far failed. From what I have read the 8139too driver should have worked with the RTL8139C chip so I have run out of ideas. I must be doing something wrong.

I had to wait months before the kernel supported the on board audio chipset. That is exactly the situation I'm trying to avoid this time around.
I have some specific questions about "server motherboards" actually. I looked at a few models of server motherboards by intel, and some random models on newegg. I wasn't able to see much of a difference from regular desktop motherboard other than most had two sockets, and support for much more ram. These boards seem more popular with Linux users. Why?
AMD and Intel both have server CPUs as well. Some question, what's the difference?
To make this question more concrete, I was looking at this this motherboard. The main questions about it that I can't answer are:
Can I get a motherboard without on board raid and audio? I wanted to get a hardware raid controller and a PCI audio card. I thought a server motherboard would be cheaper and not have these "extras", since who wants an audio card on a server?
Where can I found out about Linux support for the components on this board? "Intel ICH10R", "Realtek ALC889", "Marvell 88E8056"
I'm buying this computer to work as a Linux desktop for a lot of compiling, coding and audio/video work, but I don't want to rule out the possibility of installing windows and playing some games at one point. (even if the last game I got has been sitting in its box unopened for almost a year). Is it a good idea to buy a "server motherboard" and play games on it, or are desktop boards better value for this?
The ultimate solution for me would be a motherboard that had GPL divers for onboard LAN, a single CPU socket, lots of PCI express and PCI. USB 3.0, and no fancy hard disk controllers since I'll be getting a separate one.
I'm thinking of buying a new motherboard for my desktop. I've chosen a model and I've read some reviews on it. A couple of the reviews talk about BIOS updating/flashing and stuff like that. As a moderate hardware guy (I've built computers, but only know the basics of hardware and how they work together) running Linux, should I worry about this. I've never updated/flashed my current mobo's BIOS
So are all these reviews specific to Windows users? I've never had much driver issues in Linux (other than ATI graphics cards), nor have I had to update BIOS.
one2busy here, Just got a Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P Mb and Core i5 750. Originally had XP, then Win7, then Win7 64bit ..... all work fine. Tried to install Ubuntu 10.04, when partition section popped up it did not detect either of my Hitachi SATA drives..I went to the website and the website for this Bd, at the bottom of the page, it says that 3rd party drivers are needed for linux. Does anybody know anything about this?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu 9.10 dual boot. All went well until I upgraded the video drivers for the nvidia chipset on my motherboard. If I leave Gnome to start with the single user i created i get a black screen and 'mode not supported ' message on the monitor. BUT if i drop to root and 'startx' all is well and i can adjust the various screen resolutions and they all work well.
At this point i created another user name to check, and that works fine also, but if i drop back to the original user i get no screen unless i select 800x600, although all the other resolutions work fine with root and the other user name. Im stumped as I presume there's only one xorg.conf file for all users.
i just instaled bt4 on my hdd and i have a problem with instaling drivers... i cant find and install driver for my video card nvidia 8200 integrated on motherboard. exacly i got the problem with changeing video resolution... i have only 640x480 and 800x600, and here is the problem, i cant put it in 1024x768..

and I'm trying to install Slackware 13.37 on it. I can boot from USB cdrom and start installation. On the first step I'm able to choose the kernel (hugesmp.s or huge.s) and no matter what I choose installation freezes and all I see is black screen.
The same story with Slackware 13.1, 13.0, Debian 6
I 've try to detect my Gigabyte onboard ( rtl8111/rtl8168B) on centos 5.0 but there are error on make module clean. But If I install with mandriva 2009, Every things run oke.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my system from oS 11.2 to oS 11.3 on Thursday. I've chosen the network-CD and booted from an USB-pen-drive, as my netbook doesn't have a CD-drive.I new experience that my computer freezes obviously randomly. It's not just a programme crashing, but the whole computer just halts. Nothings working anymore - mouse is not moving, keyboard doesn't respond, I can't even switch to another tty.I tried to remember what I was doing right before the crashes. Once I used the new netbook-desktop of KDE and had typed for an application in that "cool" new desktop. The desktop wend "blank" (the application folders disappeared and I was waiting till the results were shown) and then the computer froze. Just right now I used Okular, selected some text and opened the context-menu when the computer died, the other time I closed the Yakuake with F12 and the computer didn't respond just right before the window was minimized at the top and last but not least I had that "Expose"-like window arrangement opened and clicked at the black background when everything hang up.
What could be the reason for it? oS 11.2 worked perfectly - I hadn't had any crash during 5 months of intense use. I suspected the new graphics driver, but I can't find any reported bug about the Intel 945 GMA* or anything about the new KDE 4.4.4 on atom processors.
I have just installed Ubunto 10.4 on a old fujitsu laptop. But I have a new router D-link 8xx and a new Gigabyte GN-WB32L usb dongel. I think I got the insallation right but Ubunto will not detect my wifi usb modem. I can see the network symbol in uppr right corner of main menu, but it�s red marked (not connected).
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I tried to run the fedora 12 disk setup (iso), instead of having the nice fedora logo I quickly get tetxt lines showing all my sata disks and USB card readers properly detected though... and the instal freezes. This PC is a mobo Gigabyte G41m-ES2h with 2x500 GB WD disk... Very basic config with a wolfdale 2.93 GHz + 4 GB DDR2 ram... I don't quite understand as Ubuntu 9.1 setup does the same thing whereas "superGRUB" launched from a CD detects my disks & partitions normally.
This fedora 12 disk is ok (fedora 12 installed on 2 other laptops in dual boot) and on the first satat disk there is a Vista. Really don't get it but isolinux has had sometimes issues with sata disks on some of my previous PCs.
Just I need some clarification. Is there any different form compilation is for Intel ATOM processor? Its same like all other intel processors right? Or it has any different type of compilation should be followed for Intel atom processor?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have server with Xeon E5620, 8 GB RAM, three 1TB hard drives which are in sw RAID 5 and two 250GB disk which are in sw RAID 1, all of this on Intel S5500BC motherboard. Installation of opensuse 11.0 11.1 11.2 and Enterprise suse 11 was successfull. After grub menu i get blank screen. It`s blank for about 60 - 120 sec and then appear Suse loading page and loading bar. This also happens if i change to text mod. But in text mod i can see what`s going on. First 5-10 lines are informations about partitions and then i get output just like on this link.
