Ubuntu :: Gigabyte Motherboard BIOS Locked Even With Correct Password Inputted
Nov 6, 2010
I could change and manipulate all the bios features before I put an administrator password on the bios. Now that I have put a password on the bios, even when I log-in with the correct password 90% of the motherboard settings are locked and un-changeable.

I want to start using Ubuntu again but I gave up ages ago trying to get it to work with my Gigabyte EP45-DQ6 motherboard.I cant run from disc and I can't install. If I try to run it just takes me to a black screen with blinking cursor and that's all it does.If I try to install, basically the same.I can't get anywhere doing anything, so where do I start? How can I get it working on my system?By the way, this is with the latest Ubuntu. No, it's not a corrupt download or burn. I tried to download and burn, didn't work.I ordered a free cd, it did the same. This is an issue that is NOT related to the disc or the download of Ubuntu.

Can anyone recommend a Linux sound driver for the Gigabyte GA-P55-UD4P rev. 1.0 motherboard.
I've found hints of Linux and many sources for Windows drivers, but so far haven't turned up any candidates for my Debian Lenny system.

I recently set up a Samba Server on a new Gigabyte (Desktop) Motherboard with support for SATA 3.0. I used a new 1T SATA 3.0 (6Gb) Hard Drive. The system is performing poorly, seems to have problems both opening and closing files (*.dbf).
Also will hold a file as open periodically (may be a Samba Issue).
Does the O/S have to support this standard, or is it a function of the Hardware...?

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04
uname -r
2.6.28-11-generic
Checked cable/network with 386Box running Ubuntu 8.04 all OK. Could not get Realtek 8168 on mother board to work on Gigabyte H55M-S2H motherboard. I tried to install r8168 driver but no luck ... so I bought another Linux compatible card which turned out to be a RTL8139c (eth1) and the driver I am using on this is card is 8139too.
[Code]....
My preference would be to get the motherboard ethernet working but perhaps the card may be easier to get working. Anyway after searching the net for ideas and trying different things I've just about given up. I have reinstalled Ubuntu today so eth0 is back to using the r8169 driver. I'm no expert so my attempts at following other recipies have so far failed. From what I have read the 8139too driver should have worked with the RTL8139C chip so I have run out of ideas. I must be doing something wrong.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 on an Intel D510MO motherboard as a low-end surfing computer. The monitor, a Viewsonic VA1926w, has a maximum resolution of 1440x900. However, the monitor preferences shows a maximum of 1024x768 only. How can I bring up the resolution to 1440x900? The screen seems sort of flattened because of the incorrect settings. I think the video card (built in) of the motherboard is an Intel 3150.

I reinstalled XP to do a dualboot with 10.10 yesterday. All was fine. Today I went through and installed everything windows needed, and everything seemed fine. Then I upgraded the BIOS on my motherboard, and suddenly everything isn't fine. I can boot to Ubuntu just fine. But when I select Windows from the GRUB menu, it just sits there with a cursor on the screen now.

I'm thinking of buying a new motherboard for my desktop. I've chosen a model and I've read some reviews on it. A couple of the reviews talk about BIOS updating/flashing and stuff like that. As a moderate hardware guy (I've built computers, but only know the basics of hardware and how they work together) running Linux, should I worry about this. I've never updated/flashed my current mobo's BIOS
So are all these reviews specific to Windows users? I've never had much driver issues in Linux (other than ATI graphics cards), nor have I had to update BIOS.

So I just recently built a desktop and the main purpose is directed toward gaming, etc. But I guess I haven't set-up my BIOS correctly, but when it comes to knowing what I'm doing in the BIOS it's nada. Anyways, I'm having mainly a timing and voltage issue, I start the PC up and it wants to start, shuts down and restarts successfully.
The hardware:
P55 EVGA SLI motherboard
Intel core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95w Quad-core
Visiontek 900301 Radeon HD 5750 1GB 128-bit GDDR 5 PCI express 2.0 x16
8GB 240-pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
1TB Sata HDD

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 TLS from a pen-drive (running Ubuntu example). I created a new user account. When I lock desktop it correctly turnout the screen (everything go dark). When I move the mouse Ubuntu returns perfectly. My problem is that in any time I am not asked for password. I want that Ubuntu while locking ask for password to login again. I already tried configuring lock down and lock properties (application) via gconf-editor.

My company has policy that user accounts expire once a month and they also get locked out if they re-try login more than 3 times (pam_tally). It gets very annoying every time they come and ask to get password changed. How do I let users change their own password? Also let the system email them every day for two weeks before password expiration and until they change their password?

The problem: when kpackagekit would prompt me to update packages, it would ask for my password. I would enter it, and the dialog would reject it with the message "incorrect password, please try again". Over and over. The password WAS correct -- it worked in Synaptic and on the command line using sudo, and obviously it also worked for logging in.
I suddenly had a hunch that kpackagekit might not be the culprit, and that authentication was being done by a different program -- and lo and behold, the dialog actually said policykit up there...
So, searching for policykit problems out there, I ended up seeing someone reinstalling theirs for their problem (which happened to be different from mine). The code to do that, in the command line:
Code:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall policykit
After that, entering the password after kpackagekit prompts me to has worked fine and the updates happen as nature intended.

I try to connect to my access point and after a long wait of maybe 30 seconds to a minute it will prompt me to enter my password. I entered it correctly and it still keeps on asking me to enter it. So just then I entered it with the password showing and double checked over it before trying again and it still didn't connect.
I need to have internet on my netbook working by tonight or I will have to go back to windows.
What can I do to make my laptop connect to my access point? Its not a problem with my access point, my desktop running windows, it connects just fine to my wireless.
Here is part of my syslog
Quote:
Oct 13 15:46:04 mark-eeepc NetworkManager: <info> Activation (wlan0/wireless): connection 'Auto vor' has security,
Oct 13 15:46:04 mark-eeepc NetworkManager: <info> Config: added 'ssid' value 'vor'

just installed fedora 15 on my dell inspiron mini 10. I used the livecd to install it to the harddrive with the wizard. I need to use the root account to get the yum to install the wifi drivers and such. i set the root password as "root01" the first time. it didnt work so i figured maybe i made a mistake. so i reinstalled it making sure i used "root01". it still doesnt work. anybody had this problem or heard of this problem before? i am under the impression that the passwd file could be recovered by using Grub to load it under a singleuser setting. however grub wasnt installed
