OpenSUSE Hardware :: Set Up A Samba Server On A New Gigabyte (Desktop) Motherboard With Support For SATA 3.0?

Apr 8, 2010

I recently set up a Samba Server on a new Gigabyte (Desktop) Motherboard with support for SATA 3.0. I used a new 1T SATA 3.0 (6Gb) Hard Drive. The system is performing poorly, seems to have problems both opening and closing files (*.dbf).

Also will hold a file as open periodically (may be a Samba Issue).

Does the O/S have to support this standard, or is it a function of the Hardware...?

OpenSUSE Install :: Find Hard Drives On System - Motherboard With Two SATA Controller Chips

Aug 2, 2010

I just finished a build of a new GNU/Linux boxen with openSUSE 11.2. I have a MSI Big Bang Xpower X58 motherboard which has two SATA controller chips, one is the standard Intel ICH10R chip for SATA 3.0 Gb/s and one is the Marvell 9128 chip for SATA 6.0 Gb/s. The BIOS recognizes the Western Digital Caviar Black 6.0 Gb/s drive on either SATA controller chips, /however/ I am unable to install (and boot) when the drive is connected to the Marvell controlled ports. As you can guess, I'd like to boot from the faster interface!

1. The BIOS allows me to select the Western Digital drive as a secondary boot device, so I know, at least at the BIOS level, it's there. This is true whether I have the drive connected to the Intel or Marvell ports. (The DVD drive is the primary boot device.)

2. When trying to install openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, the installer says that it can't find any hard drives on my system when I have the drive connected to the Marvell port. The installer finds the drive fine when it is connected to the Intel port.

3. I installed everything with the drive connected to the Intel port. I switched the drive to the Marvell port afterward and the system refuses to boot completely, stalling at some point where it starts to look for other filesystem partitions. This led me to conclude that perhaps the problem is with openSUSE and not hardware weirdness with the system having two separate SATA controllers?

I tried to download and burn, didn't work.I ordered a free cd, it did the same. This is an issue that is NOT related to the disc or the download of Ubuntu.

Fedora Hardware :: Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H SATA Controller

Aug 18, 2010

A friend of mine bought a prebuilt system from a local computer store that has the Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H motherboard and he says he can boot Fedora off the CD but cannot install it as it doesn't detect the harddrive.

I assume it can't detect the SATA Controller as I am pretty sure hard drives use a universal driver so the only way for it not to detect the hard drive is if the controller is not detected.

I was wondering if anyone here has this motherboard and has this problem.

I think I gave him a Fedora 12 CD. (EDIT: It's Fedora 11 judging by the filename of the ISO I have on my Desktop...)

I myself haven't used Linux in a while since I completed my Linux course and this game I play needs Windows, but I am trying not to play that game as much anymore though because of free time issues... I have an Ubuntu Dualboot but have become used to Windows again. I am gonna try using Linux in a VM to get accustomed to it again, this way I can play with different versions/distros and still have the Windows 7 host as a fallback is something doesn't work...

Ubuntu Networking :: Ethernet Installation - Could Not Get Realtek 8168 On Mother Board To Work On Gigabyte H55M-S2H Motherboard

Mar 5, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04

Checked cable/network with 386Box running Ubuntu 8.04 all OK. Could not get Realtek 8168 on mother board to work on Gigabyte H55M-S2H motherboard. I tried to install r8168 driver but no luck ... so I bought another Linux compatible card which turned out to be a RTL8139c (eth1) and the driver I am using on this is card is 8139too.

[Code]....

My preference would be to get the motherboard ethernet working but perhaps the card may be easier to get working. Anyway after searching the net for ideas and trying different things I've just about given up. I have reinstalled Ubuntu today so eth0 is back to using the r8169 driver. I'm no expert so my attempts at following other recipies have so far failed. From what I have read the 8139too driver should have worked with the RTL8139C chip so I have run out of ideas. I must be doing something wrong.

OpenSUSE Network :: Debian Server To Opensuse Desktop Samba?

Jan 20, 2010

I setup a debian home server some time ago and have successfully setup samba so my windows machines can access them and upload/download data off it.I have setup opensuse on this desktop and after allowing smb through the firewall I now seem to have read only access to the smb shares.I am using the same username and password as I do on my windows machine, so in theory smb server should see my username and password and allow me read/write, like it does in win7. Is this correct?

Having just thought about it I think samba is just a tool to get shares working between linux/windows and macos. Is samba even the best tool for linux - linux sharing? how do I get read/write access to my shares in opensuse?or do I use another program to see my shares?I'm a bit new to this linux- linux sharing so I apologies.

Hardware :: Test Integrity Of External Hard Drive / Without Removing It And Connecting With SATA To Motherboard?

Jul 28, 2009

I have a seagate SATA hard drive that was running a mythtv distro. It had 3 partitions, EXT3, swap, and XFS. I started having I/O errors on boot and saw error messages on both the EXT3 and the XFS partitions. I also heard some clunking sounds on the drive when it was reading, so I thought hell, the drive is dead.

I have since replaced the drive and everything is back up and running on the replacement drive. I thought hell, the seagate drive is toast, but I just want to verify it with some sort of tool. I have the hard drive in a Vantec NexStar external hard drive case (SATA->USB) and found there was a tool called badblocks. Ran badblocks on it, which ran for 24ish hours and found no bad blocks. I also didn't notice any clunking sounds while it was running.

I ran
Code:
badblocks -n -v /dev/sdb
Is badblocks a proper test to run on external hard drives or was I just wasting my time? Is there any way that I can really test it without removing it and connecting it with SATA to the motherboard?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: External SATA Drive Not Recognized / Cant Recreate The Partition On Server?

May 2, 2010

OpenSUSE 11.2 server, Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P sda for system, 3 ext4 partitions, working fine.sdb promise RAID1 for data, 1 ext4 partition, working fine.sdc is an eSATA docking station for data backup, 1 encrypted ext4 partition -- here lies the problem.

This configuration has been functional for months until I decided to add two more external drives (sdc) to rotate through backups. I had difficulty with encyption on the first new drive and eventually decided to start over. Using the gui Yast Expert Partitioner, I deleted the single partition. That began a real nightmare...

Since deleting the partition, the system detects drives inserted in the docking station, but does not report them (including a different fully functional drive and a brand new unused drive). I have tested all drives on other computers and they function perfectly. I have rebooted the system several times while troubleshooting this issue.

Could not recreate the partition on server (since it does not recognize the drive), so I used Gparted on another computer - it all went without a hitch, formatted ext4. But when I placed the drive in the dock, the drive still was detected but not recognized.

Details:

BIOS lists the eSATA drive

Entering Yast Expert Partitioner, error message follows:

The partitioning on disk /dev/sdc is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table.

You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sdc as they are. You can format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool.

Yast partitioner shows drives: sda, sda1, sda2, sda3, sdb, sdb1 sbc is not listed.

# fdisk sdc results in: Unable to open sdc
# dmesg | grep tail reports:
[48442.370779] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdc] Unhandled error code
[48442.370793] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdc] Result: hostbyte=DID_BAD_TARGET driverbyte=DRIVER_OK
code....

So how did partition deletion cause this issue, and how do I correct the problem? It is possible that my difficulties encrypting the first new drive are related (it's not my first time doing it successfully). It seems the problem is in the Kernel or configuration. I have invested many hours in forums and on google - tried dozens of possible fixes. I'm beginning to suspect system corruption or a bug, however all other system functions are working perfectly.

Ubuntu :: SATA II / Error "ata4: Limiting SATA Link Speed To 1.5 Gbps" - Allowing The SSD To Run At SATA II Speeds?

May 1, 2011

I keep getting this error in my log viewer every 2 seconds: Code: ata4: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps I have a dual boot SSD and I have run many SMART tests in windows and linux, (using smartmon tools and the disk utility) and the reports are all 100% healthy..... My research shows that this error represents one of the following:

1. Problem with SATA controller
2. Changing BIOS to allow SATA
3. Changing SATA mode to PATA or AHCI
4. Replacing the SATA cable
5. Allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds, i.e. 3 Gbps

- Does anyone know how to try number 5, i.e. allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds? I am lost here and this problem has caused my machine to crash twice when watching a movie in linux/ ubuntu. (It is worth noting that the crashes have only occurred in linux and I have never had an issue in windows, so it does seem to be a linux setting somewhere, hence why I think it is a "allowing SATA II to run at correct speeds issue")

Server :: Ubuntu 10.04 Server With Raid6 And Possibility Of Motherboard Failure?

Oct 6, 2010

I have set up a server box running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64-bit with Squeezeboxserver, ftp, apache and all the things that I need.I am running it on a Asus P5Q pro with 9 harddrives attached.I have set up 6 1tb disks that run a raid6 array but I am wondering what would happen if the motherboard would fail me.Is it possible to just replace the motherboard with a newer one and would then the raid6 array still be intact?

I used to run a raid10 with the 6 disks on a Windows 7 machine with a software raid card but the card broke and I replaced it with a new one but the array could would not work so I had to forget all my data and this is what brought me to using a Ubuntu server as OS and running the raid array on the motherboard sata instead. Also, is it possible to make an exact copy of the boot drive/partition and easily replace that is the boot hard drive would go faulty? I have heard about the dd command and I feel it would be nice to know that I'm not totally screwed if the boot drive fails.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 3D Support With Radeon UMS Driver + Kernel 2.6.34rc5 + X Server 1.8?

Apr 26, 2010

This is just to report that I've got 3D support successfully enabled on my Mobility Radeon HD3200 chip with the open source driver on openSUSE 11.2. I did this to replace the proprietary fglrx driver that has already been installed for quite some time on my system.

Uninstalled fglrx, and here we go... Basically what I did was to get the latest X.Org server (1.8) and Mesa from Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.2 I changed all the corresponding system packages to the versions in that repository. I noticed that I cannot get any 3D support when pairing the last X server with the updated openSUSE 11.2 kernel (2.6.31.12_0.2). With RadeonHD driver it gives me no acceleration at all (No DRI), perhaps it is still intentionally disabled to prevent lockups in r600 cards. With Radeon KDE wouldn't start.

So to get usable driver support I have to update the stock kernel to the one in Index of /repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_11.2 I installed the 2.6.34-rc5-22 kernel and reboot. Immediately I notice that KMS is working, but I could not get DRI to work, presumably caused by the drm being unable to locate two related firmware files (it is there in the kernel, just doesn't know why it is not being loaded). Other than that I do not know why I can't get any acceleration with KMS on. To workaround I passed the 'nomodeset' parameter to the kernel to run in UMS mode instead, and voila! with UMS 2D + 3D accelerations are working. I can enable kwin effects just fine.

Since this is a laptop I need suspend & resume and power management working. Good news is s2ram works perfectly with extra parameter. And all the new Radeon power management options: DynamicPM, ClockGating and ForceLowPowerMode can be enabled just fine! (For UMS you need to generate a xorg.conf and put those options in)Performance is good. So far it's faster than fglrx in some areas and slower in some other area. Now this is truly amazing!
