I have wild idea to build a new Ubuntu computer from scratch. This is a great motherboard with lots of features, planning to have a RAID, and an AMD 64 bit processor(s). I want to be sure that I am installing the correct drivers..can anyone point me to a 'guide' to building a computer such as this?

Now, I've installed the "default" (dunno if that would be the correct categorizing) driver with the "Hardware drivers" utility from System->Preferences->Hardware drivers because I've failed numerous times trying to install the package from nVidia site ; I would always get an error while trying to run the package :
"It seems that X server is running on your linux, please deactivate it to install this package" or something like that, but I'm sure it was about X running.
Well at the moment i have just installed Debian 5. I've downloaded nvidia-linux-x86-180.29-pkg1.run and i need someone to help me out step by step on how to install this properly.

My video card is an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 which appears to be running properly with some limitations (missing effects from CompizConfig). While utilizing the "Hardware Drivers" configuration a recommended driver is listed but when I attempt to activate this driver I encounter an error.
This error turns my attention to the log file :
This log file is extensive and I do not wish to post pages of code unless requested. The configuration does however list that "a different driver is in use". I have scoured threads to ensure that I have not posted a question that has been answered to no avail. Please bear in mind that I am in my Linux infancy and my grasp of this incredible operating system is cursory at best.

I had to wait months before the kernel supported the on board audio chipset. That is exactly the situation I'm trying to avoid this time around.
I have some specific questions about "server motherboards" actually. I looked at a few models of server motherboards by intel, and some random models on newegg. I wasn't able to see much of a difference from regular desktop motherboard other than most had two sockets, and support for much more ram. These boards seem more popular with Linux users. Why?
AMD and Intel both have server CPUs as well. Some question, what's the difference?
To make this question more concrete, I was looking at this this motherboard. The main questions about it that I can't answer are:
Can I get a motherboard without on board raid and audio? I wanted to get a hardware raid controller and a PCI audio card. I thought a server motherboard would be cheaper and not have these "extras", since who wants an audio card on a server?
Where can I found out about Linux support for the components on this board? "Intel ICH10R", "Realtek ALC889", "Marvell 88E8056"
I'm buying this computer to work as a Linux desktop for a lot of compiling, coding and audio/video work, but I don't want to rule out the possibility of installing windows and playing some games at one point. (even if the last game I got has been sitting in its box unopened for almost a year). Is it a good idea to buy a "server motherboard" and play games on it, or are desktop boards better value for this?
The ultimate solution for me would be a motherboard that had GPL divers for onboard LAN, a single CPU socket, lots of PCI express and PCI. USB 3.0, and no fancy hard disk controllers since I'll be getting a separate one.
I'm thinking of buying a new motherboard for my desktop. I've chosen a model and I've read some reviews on it. A couple of the reviews talk about BIOS updating/flashing and stuff like that. As a moderate hardware guy (I've built computers, but only know the basics of hardware and how they work together) running Linux, should I worry about this. I've never updated/flashed my current mobo's BIOS
So are all these reviews specific to Windows users? I've never had much driver issues in Linux (other than ATI graphics cards), nor have I had to update BIOS.
I recently installed ubuntu 9.10 dual boot. All went well until I upgraded the video drivers for the nvidia chipset on my motherboard. If I leave Gnome to start with the single user i created i get a black screen and 'mode not supported ' message on the monitor. BUT if i drop to root and 'startx' all is well and i can adjust the various screen resolutions and they all work well.
At this point i created another user name to check, and that works fine also, but if i drop back to the original user i get no screen unless i select 800x600, although all the other resolutions work fine with root and the other user name. Im stumped as I presume there's only one xorg.conf file for all users.
I recently reinstalled Wheezy on my laptop and after the install was finished I installed the brcmsmac driver, using the instructions on this wiki page: [URL]. I have the device BCM43224. I noticed though that this driver seems worse compared to the proprietary broadcom-sta I had on my previous installation and so I would like to switch. I know that there is a guide on how to install the proprietary drivers on the wiki ( [URL]), but it feels like i should remove the free driver before I install the proprietary one, and I dont know how to do this .
So my question is: what is the proper way of changing from the open brcmsmac driver to the proprietary broadcom-sta driver?
I seem to have an issue with my nvidia drivers again.I get them working, then the next lot of updates to fedora seems to revert any progress I've made.Currently I can't run any 3d accelerated applications, no wine, no games etc, I have followed the documentation, installed the driver, added the blackist to noveau into boot.conf, and restarted

I have been noticing that it was hard to set up my own NVidia video card, and alot of other people shared the same problem as I had. I have been experimenting with some things, and here's what I did to solve it.
It's fairly easy, anyone can do this. Read and follow these instructions:
Install all updates. Although it seems unimportant, it really is.
Go to [url] and follow the instructions to install the free and nonfree repositories
Go to System > Administration > Add/Remove Software
Search the following: nv
Click everything which has to do with NVidia. Do not check the checkboxes yet, but read the descriptions. If you've found your video card in the description, check the checkbox at the left of the title.
Install the drivers by clicking "Apply" at the bottom of your screen.
After installing, go to Applications > System Tools > nVidia Display Settings
Set the properties of your video card, such as TwinView or higher screen resolutions.
After you've set it up, click Apply to preview your settings. Change some settings if you like, and then click Apply when you're done. DO NOT EXIT YET!
Click "Save to X Confguration File, but do NOT save the file. Click "Show preview..." and copy the text in the preview.
Go to Applications > System Tools > Terminal and type "su". Press Enter and enter the root password.
Now type:

Select all of the text in the document and delete it. Then, paste the text of the "Save X Configuration" window into the text editor.
Exit out of the terminal.
Exit out of the nVidia Display Settings application. Do not save anything from this application.

I had originally followed the advice at Mauriat Miranda's Fedora Nvidia Driver Install Guide [URL] for installing nvidia's display driver on my HP Pavilion system 64 bit running Fedora 11. I had used his first method which just installs the relevant kernel module kmod-nvidia from RPMFusion. He also suggested an alternate method: obtaining Nvidia's installer NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.36-pkg2.run and using that. I downloaded it from Nvidia, but I didn't run it.
I recently lost X. This had happened previously after a kernel upgrade, and I just used grub to boot an earlier kernel to recover X, and then installed the upgraded kernel module to fix the problem. But this time, being deeply involved in something else, I panicked slightly, and, using dumb terminal mode I ran the Nvidia installer. It asked me to make various choices and in response to my answers, it decided to compile a new kernel module. This recovered X, but I then compounded things by installing the updated kmod-nvidia.
I realized afterwards that using both methods might create some conflicts, but X seemed to run properly. (I can tell because graphics in the program Maple doesn't work properly with the default drivers provided by Fedora 11.) Since then, when I restart nvidia, I get.

I know i know, some will say "eww Proprietary Drivers" but hey, ubunt is all about having more control of the OS. Is there an easy way to install Proprietary Drivers thats not through the hardware drivers option on system?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just assembled a new computer with Intel Core I3 processor and Asus P8H67 motherboard and 4 MB of memory. It has a 2TB Hitachi Deskstar Hard Drive and Asus DVD. I am trying to load Ubuntu 10.10 directly (without first loading Windows) without success.
I have tried 4 separate downloads of Ubuntu - 64 bit, 32 bit with Desktop and Alternative. I have changed a variety of parameters and various tricks suggested on other threads. The Desktop (32 and 64) versions get me to Busybox shell with message (Initramfs) Unable to find a medium using live file system. The Alternative version hangs with the messages:
RAMDISK: Couldn't find valid RAM image startgin at 0;
No filesystem could mount root, tried ext3, ext2, ext4, fuseblk;
Kernal panic - not syncing VHS;
Unable to mount root fs on unkown block(1,0).
For parameters I think have tried them all (but not in all combinations). I tried exiting twice from BusyBox as suggested on forums but that just hangs the system. I also turn off the quiet and splash to try and see what is going on....but it is too complex and goes to fast for me to follow.
A final suggestion was that the P8H67 is too new for Ubuntu 10.10 and to try the new version 11 coming out...I am new to Linux and reluctant to try a Beta
I have server with Xeon E5620, 8 GB RAM, three 1TB hard drives which are in sw RAID 5 and two 250GB disk which are in sw RAID 1, all of this on Intel S5500BC motherboard. Installation of opensuse 11.0 11.1 11.2 and Enterprise suse 11 was successfull. After grub menu i get blank screen. It`s blank for about 60 - 120 sec and then appear Suse loading page and loading bar. This also happens if i change to text mod. But in text mod i can see what`s going on. First 5-10 lines are informations about partitions and then i get output just like on this link. after few years being limited with my pc configuration (windows OS) I realized that linux or it's distributions is the best invention in 21 century. And finally I am starting use it. openSUSE 11.4 installaition succesful, I updated it and it looks I don;t have any problems, but I got few questions.
1. How install older version of mozilla firefox internet browser here? I can't install some plugins because it's a firefox beta 12 version, for example. I am quake fan, o I like play quake live, but i can't install quake plugin, because my firefox is beta version.
2. Does I got all drivers instantly installed to my mashine? ATI video drivers, sound drivers ect??

I just finished a build of a new GNU/Linux boxen with openSUSE 11.2. I have a MSI Big Bang Xpower X58 motherboard which has two SATA controller chips, one is the standard Intel ICH10R chip for SATA 3.0 Gb/s and one is the Marvell 9128 chip for SATA 6.0 Gb/s. The BIOS recognizes the Western Digital Caviar Black 6.0 Gb/s drive on either SATA controller chips, /however/ I am unable to install (and boot) when the drive is connected to the Marvell controlled ports. As you can guess, I'd like to boot from the faster interface!
1. The BIOS allows me to select the Western Digital drive as a secondary boot device, so I know, at least at the BIOS level, it's there. This is true whether I have the drive connected to the Intel or Marvell ports. (The DVD drive is the primary boot device.)
2. When trying to install openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, the installer says that it can't find any hard drives on my system when I have the drive connected to the Marvell port. The installer finds the drive fine when it is connected to the Intel port.
3. I installed everything with the drive connected to the Intel port. I switched the drive to the Marvell port afterward and the system refuses to boot completely, stalling at some point where it starts to look for other filesystem partitions. This led me to conclude that perhaps the problem is with openSUSE and not hardware weirdness with the system having two separate SATA controllers?

I never had a problem while installing openSUSE untill openSUSE 11.4.
All goes well while installing and configuring the network card, sound and even display(under nouveau). The problem is at the tv tuner. After i adjust some settings to it and pres OK so that the installer can save the settings all goes wrong. The installer freezes and i have to reboot the pc.
After repeating the configuration procedure and skiping this step, configuring the tv tuner using Yast this time, leads to the same thing: desktop freezes and i had to reboot because nothing is reponding anymore.
I have a desktop with a 640gb HD and a 2TB HD. I have windows 7 installed and a couple of other partitions. My 2nd HD, the 2TB drive is my F: drive. I want to create a 100GB partition for SuSE 11.4 abnd install it. however, during the install SuSE wants to shrink the volume and I don't want to use but 100GBH. What is the easiest way to properly install the OS? I am not real familiar with resizing and creating the root / , and swap etc.
