General :: Drivers - BIOS Updates And Flashing With New Motherboard?

Apr 11, 2011

I'm thinking of buying a new motherboard for my desktop. I've chosen a model and I've read some reviews on it. A couple of the reviews talk about BIOS updating/flashing and stuff like that. As a moderate hardware guy (I've built computers, but only know the basics of hardware and how they work together) running Linux, should I worry about this. I've never updated/flashed my current mobo's BIOS

So are all these reviews specific to Windows users? I've never had much driver issues in Linux (other than ATI graphics cards), nor have I had to update BIOS.

General :: Drivers - Picking A Compatible Motherboard

May 25, 2010

Last time I bought a new computer (I build them myself) I got a motherboard that had really poor linux support for a long time. Specifically the audio. I had to wait months before the kernel supported the on board audio chipset. That is exactly the situation I'm trying to avoid this time around.

I have some specific questions about "server motherboards" actually. I looked at a few models of server motherboards by intel, and some random models on newegg. I wasn't able to see much of a difference from regular desktop motherboard other than most had two sockets, and support for much more ram. These boards seem more popular with Linux users. Why?

AMD and Intel both have server CPUs as well. Some question, what's the difference?

To make this question more concrete, I was looking at this this motherboard. The main questions about it that I can't answer are:

Can I get a motherboard without on board raid and audio? I wanted to get a hardware raid controller and a PCI audio card. I thought a server motherboard would be cheaper and not have these "extras", since who wants an audio card on a server?

Where can I found out about Linux support for the components on this board? "Intel ICH10R", "Realtek ALC889", "Marvell 88E8056"

I'm buying this computer to work as a Linux desktop for a lot of compiling, coding and audio/video work, but I don't want to rule out the possibility of installing windows and playing some games at one point. (even if the last game I got has been sitting in its box unopened for almost a year). Is it a good idea to buy a "server motherboard" and play games on it, or are desktop boards better value for this?

The ultimate solution for me would be a motherboard that had GPL divers for onboard LAN, a single CPU socket, lots of PCI express and PCI. USB 3.0, and no fancy hard disk controllers since I'll be getting a separate one.

Hardware :: Flashing Bios Without Windows Or Floppy Support?

Jan 19, 2010

I recently started to build a new box based on this board: [URL] All is going well enough except for very poor sound, and before I go any further trying to sort it out,it seems smart to update the bios as I am 5 or so releases back. The readme with the bios flash utility/file says to use a win98 boot disk + bios/utility floppy but the bios file itself is much too big to fit on a floppy anyway so I haven't been able to create a floppy-emulating cd as most discussions seem to suggest doing. I'm sure I'm missing something, but there has to be a way to take a win98 boot disk image, plus 2 files and get that to either boot from cd or better yet usb drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Flashing Bios In Acer Aspire 5720?

Jul 8, 2011

flashing the BIOS in my Acer Aspire 5720z. Issue is that fan won't switch on since update to Natty and so laptop overheats and shuts down. I know the risks and I'm pretty sure these issues are BIOS related so I am wanting to do it. The file from Acer is BIOS_v1.45.exe file and can be further extracted. Files are InsydeFlash.exe, iscflash.dll, iscflash.sys, platform.ini, CL50145A.fd, iscflashx64.sys. I have tried a few different methods and the closest I have come is creating a Dos Boot Disc with .exe file on it (although during creating it said there was no more space for .exe file but seemed to work ok)I can then boot into dos and find .exe file but it says file cannot be executed in DOS.

SUSE :: Flashing BIOS On Toshiba Satellite A105 S 4547 Laptop SUSe 11.2

Jan 14, 2010

I bought this laptop several years ago. It had Vista. Just long enough for me to download SUSe, nuke and pave the HD and install Linux. Recently I upgraded from 1 GB to 4 GB of RAM, the maximum that is allowed given the motherboard (based on from what I am able to learn the Intel 945 chipset).

After upgrading to 4 GB, the machine (according to "My Computer") only sees 2.9 GB. I understand that under an earlier version of the BIOS that the machine would not recognize the RAM correctly. Additionally the "My Computer" page lists the display as "Intel 945GM". My problem is that I can find no Linux utility to flash the BIOS on this machine-- Toshiba only provides the BIOS included in an .exe file for either XP or Vista. I am hesitant to use the BIOS for the Intel 945 series motherboards from their site.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Upgraded The Video Drivers For The Nvidia Chipset On Motherboard

Apr 6, 2010

I recently installed ubuntu 9.10 dual boot. All went well until I upgraded the video drivers for the nvidia chipset on my motherboard. If I leave Gnome to start with the single user i created i get a black screen and 'mode not supported ' message on the monitor. BUT if i drop to root and 'startx' all is well and i can adjust the various screen resolutions and they all work well.

At this point i created another user name to check, and that works fine also, but if i drop back to the original user i get no screen unless i select 800x600, although all the other resolutions work fine with root and the other user name. Im stumped as I presume there's only one xorg.conf file for all users.

Ubuntu :: Sudden The Screen Started Flashing Black, The Same Type As When Install New Graphics Drivers?

Apr 4, 2010

I have an old machine running Ubuntu 9.10 and XP.t is a P4 and Nvidia FX5200 card.Yesterday all of a sudden the screen started flashing black, the same type as when you install new graphics drivers and the resolution is changing. Only here it keeps happening over and over, the mouse isn't usable fully, the icons and menus are distorted, and I basically can't do anything.

I ended up reinstalling 9.10 and everything was working fine until I installed EnvyNG to get my nVidia drivers. It required a restart, and once I logged in the same thing started happening. So I said screw this, and installed 8.04. Yet even in 8.04, once I used EnvyNG to install the drivers, the same thing happened.A few other detailsP works fine, although one time a similar thing happened on XP (not as bad), and was fixed with a reboot.- This PC runs through a KVM switch, but I connected it directly and the same thing happens.I've found no help via Google. Sounds like a possible hardware problem, but it seems to work fine in XP and only acts up in Ubuntu once I install drivers.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Path For Installing Updates / New Software And Drivers

Jul 16, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 64bit to run along Winxp in a dual boot format. I have heard many good things about Ubuntu but am using it for the first time. I have used a ntfs partition of 30GB for Ubuntu. During the installation part I was asked for the size and I gave 8 GB, I read that this was recommended. There are quite a few things I would like to know.

1. What's the difference between Ubuntu software center & Synaptic software manager?
2. Can you do everything easily via the GUI?
3. My Nvidia 8800 GT works on 1440x900 on my win xp OS. Here it doesn't seem to get to that. Additional drivers window says that 173 version is active but not in use.
4. Where do all the updates/new softwares/ drivers etc get installed? I mean the path. Like in Xp I can give a path for the installation. Can I do that in here?
5. I want to install GNS 3 which is a routing simulator and have heard that Ubuntu is very stable for it.
6. How can I get desktop icons on the desktop?
7. What's the use of 4 workspaces? I mean why is it used and what are the advantages.

I tired searching the Internet but most of them just so confusing that it feels to difficult and am afraid I might break something. Plus most of the commands are in cli that I am not able to grasp.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Video Drivers Progressively Broken With Updates

May 1, 2011

I once had rock solid systems running opensuse. The hardware hasn't changed, but the system certainly has. The last time I could describe my systems as rock solid, was before the more or less forced move to KDE4. They've been anything but solid since, and it seems the more updates, the more things that get broken. I have two systems involved (a third is my server, so far unaffected). I have a desktop system that I built (4 years ago) on an Asus motherboard using an Nvidia chipset. The second is a laptop, a Lenovo T500 with both ATI and Intel graphics.

First, the upgrade to 11.4 broke the ATI video on the laptop. Tried everything, the proprietary ATI driver as well as the radeon driver. Learned online about adding the 'nomodeset' option, which got the video to work...if I could put up with random freezes, jerky video, and a desktop that refreshed in waves. Broken. Period. Gave up, switched the system one last time to the Intel graphics and never looked back. The ATI graphics on that laptop is unusable. Fortunately, I had the option of Intel or the laptop would still be unusable to me.

On the other hand, the upgrade to 11.4 on my desktop system running nvidia graphics went without a hitch. I was even pondering the idea of seeing if I could swap out the ATI graphics on the laptop for an Nvidia board. Then came this weekend's updates, which broke the Nvidia drivers. Yes, it would still boot up to a desktop, but I had a black desktop background and all of the configuration windows I opened came up completely black. Spent a couple of hours removing/reinstalling drivers. Uninstalled the Nvidia drivers and reinstalled.

Switched to the open source drivers. After numerous attempts, with the system unable to boot to X at all at points, I finally achieved an apparently functioning system with the nouveau driver. If the objective of the developers involved is to drive people away from linux and/or render opensuse unusable, well, they are doing a wonderful job. If I were not the technically inclined individual I am, I would have had no choice with either of these cases but to abandon the operating system for something else. It's ridiculous and counterproductive.
