I believe I'm right in thinking the type of graphics card I have is relevant somehow to this, so after some googling I think I worked out mine is Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller.
View 1 RepliesI have an ASUS 1000HE laptop running Lucid 10.04 (Desktop not netbook version) which I have connected to an external display (LCD). I don't intend to use the laptop by itself anymore therefore I have configured the display properties to turn off the laptop display and use the external display as primary. However, when the PC enters 'locked mode' or the display powers down after a defined period of time (as set in the properties) when I wake the PC and the display, it turns the laptop monitor back on .... switches the laptop screen to primary display (i.e. with the panels etc displayed on it) and extends the desktop to the external display! The only thing I can then do is go back into the configuration utility and turn the laptop monitor off again and boom, everything is fine and dandy displaying on the external display again! I don't really want to have to do this every time I come back to the PC after it has been locked nor do I want to write a script (if it can be avoided) to deal with it!

I have a 19" Acer monitor and in the past have successfully configured my xorg.conf to handle dual monitor setup with 1024x768 on the laptop and 1600x900 on the Acer monitor. What I have done now is run the laptop through a KVM switch. Due to this, I would like to set the Acer monitor as the primary monitor and just shut the laptop. How can I project my laptop screen to my Acer monitor so that I can use the 1600x900 resolution available rather than just cloning my laptop and using 1024x768?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.10 this evening. I have a Nvidia Geforce 8500GT video card with two monitors hooked up (one to the cards VGA, the other to the DVI). I installed Nvidia drivers and Ubuntu is working with both monitors fine.
The problem I am having is it chose the monitor plugged into VGA as the primary (uses that monitor for the toolbars) when I really want them to go on the monitor that is plugged into DVI. Is there anyway for me to switch which monitor Ubuntu treats as the primary?
I have a Radeon HD 5830, running 3 monitors on 10.10 64bit with the 10.6 video driver. The three monitors ( from left to right ) :
DFP1 : 1152x2048
DFP2 : 1920x1200
CRT1 : 1360x768
The problem I'm having is getting the middle monitor to be the primary one.
Running
xrandr --output DFP2 --primary
puts the panel on the middle screen but my docky and icons stay on the left screen. Flash videos also open up on the portrait left monitor which looks awful. Ideally I would like the icons on DFP1, docky on P2 and flash videos to open on P2. But I would definitely settle for everyone to be on the middle screen and drag it around as I please.

When my netbook has an extended screen, using an external monitor, all of the panels stay on the netbook, not the big monitor. When I connect an external monitor, I want to use it as my primary screen. I only really intend to use the netbook screen for skype calls (so I am looking into the webcam, and not away from it) since it is so small. I wish the secondary screen to be the netbook, not the external monitor. How can I do this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am posting this to hear if there are others with display issues on Dell E6500 laptop with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 160 driver. This problem is starting to annoy me a great deal, but I am uncertain how I should move forward. In short; I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 installed on my Dell E6500 laptop. When using only the laptop, everything works great. The second I plug it into the docking station (the laptop lid closed) and want to use my two external monitors (Dell 2001FP) I'm in trouble. I cant see anything and what I get is a 'DVI: Cannot Display this Mode' on the primary monitor - If i try a regular VGA cable I get nothing but a black screen.
I have played around with the Nvidia config but it cant find my monitors and therefore I cant do much. I am aware of the various "hack the xorg.conf" options, but I before I do that I wanted to see if others had experienced the same thing. I had hoped that we were pasted the hack stage and that primary functions such as display would work by now.
I run Ubuntu on a MacBook Pro with an external monitor connected. But currently the external monitor only works with one user account. The External gets no signal and the laptop display is used on the login page. Is there any way of having the login page and possibly startup displayed on the external at all times for all accounts.

I am looking for a way to switch quickly and easily between my Laptop Display and my External Monitor, in Windows I had it configured so that when I plugged my Monitor in it would switch to that and when I removed it it would switch back to Laptop Display. From what I have tried it looks like this isn't possible with Linux, but I would like to get to the stage when I can click an icon to switch (or 1 to go to External and 1 to go to Laptop) My Laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series Graphics Card and I have so far noticed the following issues.
1. If I use the Gnome Monitors instead of ATI Catalist Control Centre it seams to cause some strange issues include confusing Linux on what the max screen res supported by my External Monitor is.
2. When I try and enable/Disable either Display or change Resolution, I am told that I have to reboot before the changes take affect.
I am using ATI HD3200 graphics card, and running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid on a laptop. It have VGA port so I can attach external LCD monitor to the laptop. I am using fglrx driver.
My question is how should I configure the xorg.conf file so that when I attached external monitor, the GNOME menu bar (Applications, Places and System, etc) will be put on the external monitor instead of laptop LCD monitor.
I have checked varies web resource that saying you can drag and drop the GNOME menu bar to the new screen, it never worked. Someone also suggested to add new bar into the screen and GNOME will remember it, I can't even find the option to do that.
I don't know if it sounds weird but I've been trying for weeks with no result. I want to plug my external monitor through my laptop's vga plug, close the lid and work on my monitor instead of the laptop's monitor. I looked through the gnome power management settings and when the laptop lid is closed it can only suspend, blank screen, hibernate or shutdown. I can plug my monitor and I have clone displays and it works fine but I can' find a way to shutdown the laptop screen without shutting down the vga outlet. Its a brand new Acer aspire 5734Z with a 15,6 inches screen (wich is why I want to plug in my 19 inches monitor and work on bigger screen)
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.
I connected an external 22" monitor to my new linux netbook and now I am trying to improve the display clarity. By shifting the "clock" monitor bar to 100 ,the letters were less faded but edges of my screen were lost (by zooming in). Can I fix that through Linux?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy brother has just installed 9.10 on his Inspiron 6400 and would like to have a dual screen setup using both the laptop display and a flatscreen attached to the VGA socket. Using the standard display options, the two displays are recognised and when the 'mirror screens' option is disabled then settings applied it works to the extent of allowing the cursor to move between the two monitors; however the monitors display nothing except a black screen and the cursor.
I've updated everything to the current version, had a look for restricted drivers (none are suggested by the GUI tool thing) and checked both displays work (both independently and as mirrored). I also had a look for an xorg.conf to poke around in but there wasn't one there.
I'd like to solve a little problem that I have connecting my notebook with an external VGA monitor.Everything seems to work fine, but when I close the laptop monitor, also the external monitor shuts down.I've tried to find different energy-saving setting for laptop display and external monitor. with no luck...My video card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. On the ATI website there is no catalist control center for linux. (It would be very useful). So, for now, I can only use the display options on the panel.
View 4 Replies View RelatedHi I am new to ubuntu and am having major problems setting my displays up. my setup is a hd TV to the Left of my pc monitor, i have managed to configure catalyst to let me have a main display with the second display being an extension of the first, the problem is i cannot seem to swap my primary display, at the minute my HDTV has all the taskbars and everything on it while my pc monitor is just a blank background, i would like it so i could start a film playing for my children, then drag it across to the HDTV while i can still use my pc in the background.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L500 laptop on which I installed the beta of Ubuntu 11.04. Things seems to work smoothly at the moment, but with one niggle. I have an external monitor connected to my laptop, and can manage to have a dual-screen configuration, and I am able to move the mouse from one screen to another correctly; however, the menus, status bars and window icons remain stubbornly only on the laptop screen. This is happening with Unity as well as Gnome.
If I disable the laptop screen with grandr (the Gnome GUI for xrandr) they do migrate on the external screen, but they swoosh back to the laptop if I reactivate it. Trying to alter the layout with grandr or using xrandr with the --right-of option from the command line do not change anything good. I randomly get the laptop screen to become half black.Incidentally, something like it used to happen with Fedora 12 (I think) some months ago.
I have two monitors, the internal LCD of the laptop, and an external 23". It is working well, but sometimes dialog boxes pop up on the laptop screen inconveniently. The Gnome panel is on the big screen. For example, Firefox is running on the "main" external big screen, I select Edit|Preferences and the dialog box comes up on the laptop screen. 9.04 didn't do this. Is there a primary monitor setting or something to fix this?

I've got a 19' Sceptre monitor, and a 24' Samsung SyncMaster P2450.I'm using an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card. I'm using 2 DVI ports to connect the monitors.Currently, all of the icons and menu bars are appearing on the Sceptre monitor. The Sceptre monitor is also to the left of the Samsung monitor. I've looked all through the Catalyst Control Center preferences and can not find anything useful.

10 minutes (screen), 20 minutes for suspension.
After around 30 minutes, I came back and switched back on the pc.
The primary monitor (VGA) was not detected, even after a system reboot.

I have an Nvidia card, but currently I am using nouveau drivers.
Two monitors: VGA (primary) and DVI (secondary).
Later I could get my primary monitor to work by switching tty (ctrl+alt+f3 and typing "startx" in the console).
I guess this is related to Xorg configuration (/etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty), but I am not really sure.
So i was searching around my big desktop was working fine by default but I couldn't figure out how to switch my primary monitor and all the threads on this topic where real old and the fglrx drivers kept messing me up
so I went to my profile and showed hidden files and found a cool .xml file called monitors under .config
opend it up and chooses the primary monitor I wanted

I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.

I'm using a laptop and running a secondary monitor to my TV. My laptop has ATI HD 3400 video card. The TV has a higher resolution than the laptop's monitor. When the video is full screened on the TV, the actual video uses the resolution of the primary monitor and not the second.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have google'd the crap out of this and have yet to find a "solved" forum. I currently have 2 sapphire ati 5770's in xfire. I also have two monitors. My (preferred) primary display has a dvi input and my other display is hdmi. I have them both plugged into only one of the cards. For some reason it keeps setting the hdmi display as the primary. And I want them in extended view. The ATI CCC suite does not support changing the primary monitor and I have tinkered with the xconfig but I do not really know what I am doing, so I have ultimately not been successful. here is my xorg.config file.

I am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.

I have an external monitor connected to my laptop (extended display). I always drag the Totem player from the laptop screen to external monitor to watch video files. I wonder, if the Totem player can be set to open in the external monitor automatically, everytime I open it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy software and hardware information are as follows. I have Fedora 12 and KDE 4.4.5 installed on a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. I believe it's a 64 bit processor; it's an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. The external monitor is a Dell as well.
My problem is that my system does not seem to be detecting an external monitor that I have connected. Everything else is working just fine; however, I would like to have the option of attaching an external monitor. When I plug the external monitor into the laptop, the external monitor remains black and appears to be in power save mode. The results of xrandr -q (with or without the external monitor attached: it doesn't appear to change) are as follows.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having a problem with the nouveau driver in Fedora 15 Code: lspci | grep VGA 40:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV41GL [Quadro FX 1400] (rev a2) The problem is that when I boot a Fedora 15 live Cd, either gnome or xfce, the monitors initially seem to work in that they display at the proper resolution, both as the CD boots and as X initially starts. I can see the background and the mouse cursor - it is "busy" ...
As the desktop finishes loading, however, my primary monitor becomes disabled. With gnome the screen goes black, with xfce it goes white. I can still see the mouse on my secondary monitor, but I can not seem to open any applications (such as a terminal) or change to a console (ctrl-alt-F1 or ctrl-alt-F2). I can boot into safe mode. Adding the boot option video=xxx sets the resolution on the console as it boots, but does not help running X.
I installed openSUSE 11.3 on my Dell studio laptop with Mobility Radeon HD 4500 graphics card and everything worked straight out of the box.
Now.. I am connecting my tv through HDMI cable as second monitor. Basically I just want to play movies on my tv while still having the laptop screen free to work. This also works, I just plugged it in and I had two screens.
My problem is that my tv is the primary monitor so basically my laptop background (and all the buttons that go with it) moves to the tv and my laptop background is just a background. See attached image at the bottom of this post(Laptop on the left and tv on the right).
This is exactly what I want but the other way around. I can't seem to change this in System Settings/Display. Is there a file somewhere I can change this?
