I'm running 10.04 as a DVR (mythtv). If the computer boots with the TV off it won't detect the settings, and when I turn the TV on nothing displays. I have to ssh into the computer and reboot it to get it to detect the display.Any idea how I can go about solving this? How can I disable autodetect and force it to use a specific setting?
View 3 RepliesI am new to Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu 8.04 and it detected my Acer monitor AL1716 correctly and it works fine. However when I installed Ubuntu 11.04 it shows the monitor as " Unknown Monitor" and the maximum resolution is 1024x768 and I cannot set the native resolution which is much higher. My motherboard has Intel 845G chipset and built in graphics. I tried Ubuntu Software Center, but couldnot solve the problem.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I have a Samsung monitor at work (model 2343BWX) that I use in addition to my laptop screen. My computer is a T500 think pad. When I boot into ubuntu 10.04 from previously shutting down the computer in ubuntu I can't detect the monitor. If I however boot first into windows (I don't even have to enter my password, I can just press shutdown on the menu instead of logging in, and then boot into ubuntu) and it auto detects the monitor.
I have tried going to System -> Preferences Monitors and clicking "Detect Monitors" it doesn't work. Anyone know how this could be?
I setup 10.04 on an older Athlon XP 3000+ ASUS A7N8X board with a Radeon RV250 video card. It works fine and dual boots with XP on the LCD monitor I have. I took it to my mom's an connected to a iiyama Vision Master 450 CRT. When I boot, I get the grub menu, and if I pick Windows XP, it boots fine. If I pick Ubuntu, the screen goes blank, as small underline cursor appears at the top left, and then the monitor goes into sleep mode and the keyboard is no longer responsive.
I cannot seem to gain access. I cannot hit CTl-ALT-F2 (or ALT-F2) to get to text login (screen is sleeping and no keyboard control). I tried Live CD, it shows a graphic at the bottom of the screen and then goes blank as well! Seem like something with monitor resolution, but I cannot seem to figure out how to force it to work. I can't seem to figure out how to get into command line mode on boot either.
I have an Nvidia card and I am using ubuntu 10.04. Before installing the ubuntu nvidia restricted drivers, the boot screen with the ubuntu logo would cover the entire display area of the monitor. But now, after installing the Nvidia driver and fixing the display resolution of the boot screen with the Plymouth fix, the boot screen doesn't expand to fit the entirety of the monitor display area. How can I fix this? There is a good 2 inch off from either side of the display while booting.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to build a media pc, and successfully so till this one little/big problem. I want to be able to turn on my tv, and pc, and have the pc display onto the TV. Ports used are HDMI(pc)->HDMI(HDTV)
But for some reason Ubuntu will not fully load with just the TV plugged in (all i get is a black screen, not even a "no signal" message).Once a LCD monitor is plugged into the VGA port. Then I see a glossy white Ubuntu symbol on the LCD monitor. Then the Ubuntu loading screen appears on both the LCD monitor AND the TV. in mirror mode. And I can see the desktop on both monitor AND TV.
I am using an ATI RAEDON HD 4200 chipset that is on the mobo. I have downloaded the proprietary drivers and installed them. A few things I have tried are the instructions on this page, finding my modeline using a modeline calculator and also going off of a suggestion from a thread on this website, stripping down my xorg file so that the Xserver would autodetect it. Which i think I did wrong because after that, it wouldn't display on TV at all.
I'm trying to get my secondary display (DVI-Out) working on a laptop (built-in monitor & external display) and I'm afraid I made quite the mess of it installing the proprietary driver only to learn that my old ATI card is no longer supported and having to clean that up and reinstall the original distro driver!Anyways, I reverted back to the open source driver and all is ok. That is until I reboot. If I reboot with the DVI display connected then both displays are brought up in 640x480 res and look terrible.
What do I have to do to be able to leave my DVI display connected when I start up the machine and get it to render the way it does when I plug in the display after the machine is running?I suspect I need to create an xorg.conf file but these fancy modern Linuxes these days don't come with one (or maybe they no longer need it anymore).
My software and hardware information are as follows. I have Fedora 12 and KDE 4.4.5 installed on a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. I believe it's a 64 bit processor; it's an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. The external monitor is a Dell as well.
My problem is that my system does not seem to be detecting an external monitor that I have connected. Everything else is working just fine; however, I would like to have the option of attaching an external monitor. When I plug the external monitor into the laptop, the external monitor remains black and appears to be in power save mode. The results of xrandr -q (with or without the external monitor attached: it doesn't appear to change) are as follows.

I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.

I am facing problem with the fresh installation of Fedora 11. (I have moved from Fedora 9). When I try to view videos on ..... or use the Cheese Webcam Booth, I get blurred lines on the screen and I am unable to see any video or pic.
Also I noticed that the when i go to System > Preferences>Display, it shows me UNKOWN MONIOR.
However, if I got to System>Administration>Display and enter the su password, it shows me correct monitor and the graphics driver.
I am not sure if my original is related to the Unknown Monitor.
I also tried to install Nvidia driver but it crashed the xserver and I had remove the driver.
My Monitor is LG 700E and Graphics card is from intel. as I am not able watch any video.
I just upgraded, and when I rebooted I could see that it was booting but after the initial phase I got a blank screen.
I went to prompt and tried xrandr to which I got the error : Can't open display.
What does that mean, and how do I fix this? I guess that my monitor is not properly identified or is not identified at all.
Does anyone know what I can do?
Went to /etc/gdm to find xorg.conf but it is not there. In etc/X11 I have an xorg.conf

I have installed (successfully) Ubuntu 10.04 ppc on my powerpc g4 mac. 400mhz, 1g ram. Its the blue model. It works great, but it does not detect my monitor, and I can not change the settings past 800 X 600. I am using a Dell 19 inch monitor. Analog input (not DVI yet) resolution 12080 x 1024 60hz. I believe I need to change the info in the xconfig file (but I don't know to what or how), and I may not be saying that correctly.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy Ubuntu server box, has a Iiyama prolite LCD, 22", 1680x1050, that had not problem at all since... I can remember. Since yesterday, after a restart, xserver started in 640x480, with only 320x240 as alternative.
I have latest nVidia drivers installed, and the main difference with last week, is that now, Display Configuration says CRT-1, unknown instead of Iiyama.
I've tried.
1. Uninstall xserver and reinstall.
2. dpkg reconfigure
3. Uninstall nVidia and come back to original Nouveau.

I install the debian on my PC, but the monitor is not detected or not adapted ( while it is for linux CD live, and windows XP). it gives the following errors :
I want to use the file xorg.conf given by CDlive ( sidux for example) and copy it in the /etc/X11 of my debian, is it enougn or I need ohter configuration ?
Today I set up the energy settings like that:
10 minutes (screen), 20 minutes for suspension.
After around 30 minutes, I came back and switched back on the pc.
The primary monitor (VGA) was not detected, even after a system reboot.

I have an Nvidia card, but currently I am using nouveau drivers.
Two monitors: VGA (primary) and DVI (secondary).
Later I could get my primary monitor to work by switching tty (ctrl+alt+f3 and typing "startx" in the console).
I guess this is related to Xorg configuration (/etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty), but I am not really sure.
I have a ViewSonic (VA1703w) LCD and Fedora 14 is not detecting it. I want to change the resolution but it is fixed to 1024x768. I have also tried to add the resolution in xorg.conf but no effect.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI noticed that Debian 8 has a significant bug related to detecting presence of display(s). Today, I woke my computer from sleep while the LCD monitor was unplugged from power (the monitor is connected via DVI) then I powered the monitor but nothing was displayed. Next, I connected another monitor via HDMI and both screens started working. However after disconnecting HDMI cable from the second monitor the first one with DVI stopped showing anything. The conclusion of this situation is that HDMI monitor must be connected all the time.
I thought that this is caused by graphics driver, but I experienced the problem on different machines, one with nvidia driver and DVI, and the second with default free driver and DisplayPort.
I just checked that this is related to KDE. After switching to console using ctrl+alt+f1 the screen turns on, but when I am going back via ctrl+alt+f7 the screen disappears.
Setup:
I'm using i386 Jessie Debian, have an i7 Intel processor and Gtx 745 4gb NVidia GPU.
I am running with nomodeset due to blurring issue but issue occured without nomodeset too.
Problem:
When I start Debian with just a monitor in the HDMI slot it doesn't recognize the monitor and keeps the monitor at 1024x768.
When I start Debian with monitor in both DVI and HDMI slot it only activates the DVI monitor (with proper resolution). PC has no VGA I have no DP cable.

My system can't seem to detect the external monitor that I've plugged into my laptop using and HDMI cable. The monitor works when I'm booted into Windows so I know that it isn't a problem with the monitor or the cable.

I've recently installed Debian v8.1 and installed Nvidia driver 340.46. In nvidia-settings I am able to enable my second monitor and enable it/set it's position..etc. My second monitor is not being detected in Debian Display and is 'on' but only showing a black screen. I've tried researching and implementing various 'fixes', but I'm not having any luck.
I'm running dual GTX 570's with a monitor plugged into one each (DVI). I noticed in my xorg.conf under Section "Screen" I have an option "MultiGPU" "Off"; would this be part of the issue?
I've tried:
- purging all nvidia drivers and re-installing
- installing different versions of nvidia drivers
- add nomodeset in grub
Today my desktop reverted to 1024x768 resolution immediately after init. I tried changing it back but only 1024x768 and 800x600 are listed as supported in the display settings, even though my monitor supports resolutions of up to 1360x768. Rebooting the system did not solve the problem.I'm running Fedora 15 x86_64 on kernel 2.6.38.8-35 with the proprietary nvidia drivers of version 275.09.07. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 933n. nvidia-settings is apparently not detecting it correctly, it thinks I'm using a CRT monitor.I was actually in this exact same situation a few months back, but it kind of went away on its own, so I didn't mind too much. View 13 Replies View RelatedI haven't manually configured XWindows in a very long time, so I'm not very certain what I need to do anymore. Hopefully someone can provide some guidance. I just built up a new system that I'm trying to connect to a 47" LCD TV that provides a VGA connection. When the computer starts booting all of the text comes up just fine (1 or 2 characters on the left are chopped, but otherwise fine). When I tried to run the installer for CentOS5.5 I ran into a problem. The monitor(TV) wasn't getting a proper signal to display XWindows. In an effort to keep going, I reconnected the PC to an old monitor and did the install from there. That worked no problem. I ran all the latest updates hoping that maybe this was fixed in a patch. I then shutdown and reconnected to my TV. no luck. When it starts XWindows the screen doesn't display anything. I've tried fooling around with modifying the xorg.conf and adding an explicit "Monitor" section and set it to 640x480 with a VertRefresh of 60 (which is supposedly an acceptable format), but no luck. Can anyone provide any guidance on how to solve this problem. BTW I do know that the VGA connector on the TV works just fine because I can hook up my laptop (Windows XP) to it.

Acer Aspire 5820 TimelineX, Mobility Radeon 5650, running open source radeon drivers. Laptop has VGA output (haven't tried it yet, will later tonight, I suspect it works) and an HDMI output. Monitor connected to laptop through HDMI causes garbled picture (either a set of lines made of little square blocks or a pink vertical line running down the leftmost edge with white, dashed horizontal lines travelling up the screen from the bottom to the top and repeating). The previous happens at startup, the latter happens if I disconnect the monitor and plug it back in again after logging in.
Running KDE 4. HDMI port is not detected (does not show up in gnome-config-display or in krandr or in xrandr). It does show my laptop's built in screen and my VGA output, but does not list my HDMI output anywhere. HDMI seems to show up in a message in dmesg, but other than that, no.
Included is the output of a few commands. All commands were run with the monitor plugged in to HDMI. 'monitor-probe-using-X radeon' failed with "Unrecognized option: -probeonly". Monitor does not display anything if plugged in on startup (some people got something, then it disappeared when X started). I haven't played with Xorg.conf yet, I'm not sure what to write for HDMI output. I haven't tried the fglrx drivers yet ((*shudders*)). I can't get any info on this problem, other people have had similar issues but they had trouble with getting a particular resolution to work or no sound through HDMI. I don't care about sound, just want a picture. Monitor is an LG Flatron L246WH. I can use VGA if push comes to shove, but I'd really like to get HDMI working.

I installed Fedora 12 configured Gnome automatically. Generally default settings. My monitor was connected directly to the video card and all was good. My video card was detected and my monitor was detected as ViewSonic Corporation 19" and I can set the screen resolution to 1280x1024. I had no xorg.conf file, as it seems that Fedora 12 does a great job of PnP to just set everything up.Now I go and complicate things by hooking up my monitor through a KVM switch. All of a sudden my monitor is "Unknown" and the best resolution I can achieve is 800x600.
Sure, I could go and reconnect without the KVM, but I want to be able use it.Is it possible to edit xorg.conf to tell it "Trust me, just use 1280x1024 at 60Hz even though you can't figure out what the monitor is"?
I tried a number of the posted suggestions to generate xorg.conf files but none of them get me what I need. A simple sample file listing that does the minimum is greatly appreciated (I can experiment from there once I get a basic setup working).And can someone explain if it is X or the ATI driver that is getting confused by the unknown monitor type. It helps to know what is actually going on in addition to a fix (so I can figure it out myself in the future). Thanks!
I just got a new laptop, and installed fedora 13 on it. I have had no major problems, until i tried to hook up a external monitor. It does not show up in the gnome-display application, and the keyboard switching button combination (Fn+f#) does not work. On my past laptop, this worked fresh from the install, f8->f10->f11.

I successfully installed linux mint 9 and at the same time update the system. Now that everything is running, I returned the pc to the owner, but when I power it on, no display. You can see the post but no display after that. And 1 more, I press the shift while loading grub2, nope nothing happens. And also tried booting the CD installer, same results.
I installed the system using an old 15" CRT monitor and the owner had a AOC 1619sw LCD monitor. I found this thread from ubuntu which I think was the same problem as mine, [ubuntu] Help! No display/keyboard on boot with differnet monitor - Ubuntu Forums, but no solutions yet.
Can Ubuntu display to a sepporat monitor? If so what do I need to do?

The monitor is listed as unknown in monitor settings and is going at 51 HZ with performance and out of range issues in some game. How can I get ubuntu to recognise it, or better yet change the driver?I did some googling and discovered a tool called displayconfig-gtk, but I can't install it in Ubuntu 10.04
View 4 Replies View RelatedUsing squeeze with a GeForce4 MX 440 video card (NVIDIA) I have a monitor (4/3 aspect ratio, 1024x768 usually), and a TV connected via S-video After installing the NVIDIA driver using the NVIDIA binaries I managed to have a cloned twin screen configuration working.
However, the monitor is (wrongly) detected as having size 1824x768 (aspect ratio is widescreen) Using system monitor, I can set the correct size, but only for one session; besides, the login screen too is messed up the xorg.conf file seems right: proper resolution modes are set; xorg.0.log too
