I have SUSE installed and i want dvi display but i dont have any idea why X fails I tried changing xorg.conf file tried modifying it but of no use If i use both dvi and vga display comes on both the monitors but on dvi diaplay goes off at login screen after gdm comes up
View 3 Repliesi installed opensuse 11.4 on my laptop (Lenovo T60, Mobility Radeon X1400). It worked fine for some weeks, the first problem that I found was that libreoffice did not work. Calc crashed immediately (screen looked "destroyed", only the panel was really visible, but the system seemed to work so I could log out without alt+ctr+del), writer had the problem after opening some menu options. Now (one week later) after start and login I could not see the panels anymore, I could start programs but those would not be displayed, I only saw the desktop. After restarting, I cannot even log in anymore, the screen looks destroyed as with libreoffice. I created a new user, this works and this is from where I write.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and at first, everything was just fine. This issue came about yesterday, as far as I know, while my screen was locked. The login screen now displays only half of the original login screen (left side) and the other half (right side) is an odd view of a black background with a white box in the center (see this mock up). Another note of interest is that the right side pans as I move the mouse around the screen, as if the right-side view were a second view port to the login screen without displaying it properly.
I am not able to log in whatsoever. An incorrect password results in the standard error message. A correct password results in a temporary black screen, as if to load to the desktop, but then redisplays the login screen as if I hadn't logged in at all. I'm not sure where to begin, as I cannot login to run any commands and the grub menu does not give options to start in safe mode--it just loads directly to the latest instance of Ubuntu.
I'm running 10.04 and whenever i go to the login screen, the username and password window is on the wrong monitor. I'm also using an ATI Radeon HD 4850 if it makes any difference.

I've been running xubuntu for a few weeks now, but just today I began having a few problems. When I boot my computer, it simply freezes at the xubuntu logo just before the login screen.
The last thing I remember doing before this is typing export DISPLAY=:0.0 in the tty1 terminal.

I was compiling an application called Audacious. One of the dependent packages I needed to obtain was called Glib. After installing Glib (and a package it also required), my GNOME began failing and after rebooting the computer, the login GNOME login screen fails to displaying. Does anyone know what's gone wrong?

Now after installing Glib, restart your computer and your GNOME will have failed. Why the F did this happen?
This is the 2nd time this has happened. I installed 11.1 & 11.2 later. After the install I would get the login screen just fine and then when it starts running everything goes white. It is an issue with compiz and my graphics I assume. The interesting part is in opensuse 11.0 I had all compiz items not installed. When I installed 11.1 & 11.2 they reinstalled. For next time is there a way to not have these installed on the install? What I had to do was login in a different session other than Gnome. Then go into yast and remove compiz. Then logout and log back in with gnome and the white screen is gone.

While I wait for the gnome login screen to pop up I get the "Oh no something has gone wrong" message.
When I log in from another terminal and execute startx , gnome initiates and starts although settings like my resolution and other xserver settings are not loaded.
From the journalctl I believe the error is located in the following section:

I reinstalled the xorg-xserver and the nvidia drivers and I get the same behavior.
Looking for some info in order to reconfigure the gnome-session to work?
Basically, the problem is, we have a bunch of computers in a computer lab, that we want to students to access, but not modify in ANY way. That includes backgrounds or whatnot. And after restart, any changes they may have made, change back. Also, they can't have read access to the administrator account on the computer.

The Guest Session is exactly what we are looking for, but try as I might, I can't get it to work. Because, we don't want to have to login as administrators, then activate guest session, just for our students to use the computers. The idea being, we can leave the computers in there, and not worry about the students breaking anything.
One thread I tried was: [URL]. However, using his method, will log the student into the account, and after about 5 seconds, log them back out.

I have a Dell precision 380 (system specs can be found here: [URL]. My system is set-up in dual boot configuration with Windows Xp x64 on one side of my HD and CentOS 5.3 (64bit) on the other. My system came with 2Gb (2 x 1Gb) of RAM and I recently wanted to upgrade. I bought 2 x 2Gb ELIXER DDR2 667Mhz RAM. I carefully added the new sticks to my motherboard, booted up windows via bios which noticed the new RAM was present. All seemed well.
However, on rebooting the system and entering the CentOS boot phase, after the boot phase (eg starting program... [ok] etc) but before the login screen my screen goes black / blank. My system has an ATI FireGL v3100 graphics card, I checked out the technical info on this and it should be ok on 64 bit linux. (See: [URL])

So, I just installed Fedora yesterday. I have been trying out different Linux distros and Fedora was next after Ubuntu and SuSE failed severely. So, I installed F14 yesterday and everything has been great... until I tried to set my JAVA_HOME variable. I followed the instructions here.
After editing $ vi ~/.bash_profile as the site instructs, I proceeded to log-out and log back in...except I can't log back in. I have repeatedly gotten the login screen, selected my account, and entered my password. When I enter my password incorrectly, it says 'Validation Error' and that is not what is occurring. The display goes black for a couple of seconds and I am redirected back to the log in screen.
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, using an nVidia graphics card. I have my TV hooked up to my computer and acting as a second monitor, using the Twinview option with the gpu. My monitor is set as the primary display, with the TV as secondary.
The problem I'm having is that when I turn my computer on, the main display is black, and all the load up information is output to the second display. Then, when I get to the log in screen, it is also on the second display.
I tried installing 10.04 via Wubi on a friend's notebook and have hit problems with the display. The installation seemed to proceed OK (took ages to download / install - left it running overnight) until it came to boot to Ubuntu. The GRUB menu appears OK, but choosing Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with some icons at the bottom, which is displayed for a few seconds, then the (login?) screen just shows rolling display, like an out-of-tune analogue TV. I suspect that I need a graphics driver or something? The notebook is a logiQ notebook, with 128MB SiS Mirage-3 graphics.
View 2 Replies View Related1st install no good, but did second to fix some possible mistakes.Booted to login prompt and then, after login, nothing until entered telinit 4, then scrambled screen, then changed to probably the normal screen background of grey/white with numerous white globes, but nothing else and cursor moved, but wouldn't function on occasions also got box with login name, password locations.Got message of "Display not set" and that the problem was so complex it couldn't be explained with these minimal resources.Did third full install and changed screen option from my known resolution with framebuffer, to safe standard, but no improvement.Lilo was installed to MBR, and had 2 partitions flagged as bootable (/ and /boot).Found nothing on forums or FAQ, but suppose could give change of kernel a shot, but as used what cd started with, that seems unlikely.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command,and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
I installed 10.04 on my pc. I also have 9.08 and XP installed. Both work. The 10.04 gui login screen displays and asks for the password. I enter the password. The screen goes blank but after a few seconds the gui login box re appears and again asks for a login. I rebooted into the TTY, created a new user, checked the new user was in in /etc/passwd and that I could get into the new user's account. When I rebooted into the gui the new user was there and I entered the password but again I just got back to the gui login window. The pc I am using is at least 5 years old. I have tried startx and I do get the gui background but no controls are displayed. I am using 32 bit 10.04. Using the TTY I have uploaded all the current fixes.

Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been with opensuse from 10, and I currently run 11.3 on my desktops. My attempt to install 11.4 failed. It produced a display with many tiny rectangles instead of a gui. I guess there is a discrepancy between the times produced by the x and the y display drivers and the times expected by the display hardware. I can't blame it on the display hardware, though, because I switched to another monitor and got the same error. I did the usual tests from the install screen, and there are no errors. If I run the program in fail-safe mode, the display is text only. In this case there is no x-server. I have not observed that in 11.3 fail-safe.

i have just put a Geforce 7300 GT graphic card into my machine the problem is the max resolution I can get is 1024x768 at 60 hz the screen is a benq fp71g+. also the screen goes blank when i click on the display icon in system settings. i know that the screen can be run at 1280x1024 so I don?t know where the problem is.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just finished building my new machine. I've got windows 7 running just fine on it, but I wanted to dual boot Ubuntu 10.04. I downloaded the 64 bit iso and tried installing it from both a live cd and a usb drive. When I boot from either (cd or usb), I see the Ubuntu loading/boot screen, but after the data is loaded, my display goes black and seems not to be able to find a signal. I assumed initially that it was probably due to the fact that I was connecting to my tv by HDMI cable. I guessed that Ubuntu did not have HDMI drivers for my video card, ATI Radeon HD 5750, by default. Then today, my new monitor arrived and I switched to the DVI output on my video card. I assumed that this would allow me to boot and install. I was wrong. I experienced the same symptoms on my monitor via DVI as I did on my TV via HDMI. why my monitor drops the signal as soon as it leaves the loading/boot screen?

However, after install and reaching a CLI (on the HDD), when I run startx, my monitor simply displays 'invalid format' (obviously this works fine via the LiveCD)... View 5 Replies View RelatedI have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.
