Slackware :: Slack Dependent On Lilo?

May 4, 2010

I understand that making any changes wrt to kernel on Slackware one has to rerun Lilo. If an install was made onto a disk already using other distros and Grub and wanting to keep Grub, do I still need to install Lilo?I believe that one could use the 'chainloader' entry in Grub to boot the Slackware. And Lilo can be installed to its own / root partition.I suppose really what I'm asking is Slackware totally dependent on Lilo?

General :: Installing Lilo Item When Drive Is Not Present

Oct 30, 2010

I have to computers: 'A' (linux) and 'B' (windos). On 'A' I have a linux system that i copy over to a movable disk on which i install the lilo bootloader. Now when I move the disk to 'B' I am able to boot into the new linux system, however I would like to have an item in the lilo boot menu from which I can boot the windows system on 'B' also. And now the tricky part: I would like to create this item when the disk is still on 'A' where windows is not present.

I have tried using "disk = /dev/hda1 inaccessible" without any luck.Is it possible to "cheat" lilo into adding an item pointing to a disk that is not present on your system ?

General :: Installing Slackware / LILO On Two Hard Drives?

I have one machine with two disks that I'd like to install Slackware on. I'd like to have the root folder and installed folders on hdb, and just have have hda as a disk I can use for storage (without any home directories, etc.). My problem is, I don't know how to make this boot, as I think LILO is installed on the primary drive, but the boot folder is located on hdb. I tried doing this before and was having problems booting, so I was just going to go through the whole process again, but don't really know the correct procedures.

Software :: Installing LILO On USB External Hdd

Jul 6, 2009

I have not seen a clear cut or concise way to do this. I have copied my Linux system (Debian Lenny) from my internal hdd(hda) to a 160 GB external hdd(sda) hooked up through USB. I want to be able to boot from this external hdd. The system BIOS will allow ... supposedly ... booting from a USB device. I am using LILO with the internal and would rather continue using it. I don't know if it is installed correctly on the external. I seem to doubt it.Can anybody tell me where to look for more info? Or perhaps enlighten me on how to install LILO into the MBR of an external USB hdd.

Any other tips would be great as to how to boot my Linux system off of the external

General :: Installing Programs For Use With Live Boot?

Apr 16, 2010

[URL] I'm currently running simplyMEPIS 8.0.15 (rel 32). It's booting automatically off a USB. The way I have it configured right now, it just loads right up without a root menu or boot-options, just basically going straight to "hey, u ROOT or DEMO?" I'm not sure if there's a way to get back to the bash and load directly to RAM at this point.

In another thread I was looking into burning backups from k3b as I run live because my DVD-player isn't behaving right now under windows... 'still working on that I want to get a backup done before I do a hard install. It's my goal to get either Kismet, wireshark, or Airsnort/crack/peek running on this machine so I can start gathering packets and doing analysis. Is that a way that (atleast for the timebeing until I can work out backups) that I can install any of these programs directly to the USB (by editing the ISO somehow?), so that they'll be available when I liveboot?

General :: Installing Lucid Lynx Using Live Cd On Compaq Presario SR5010NX ?

May 7, 2010

I have been trying to install Ubuntu Lucid Lynx using Live CD on this machine, a compaq Presario SR5010NX, with Celeron D 3.46Ghz CPU. Bios Version American Megatrends, Inc. 5.18, 2007; 2 gigs of RAM with approx. 140 gigs of hard disk space total useable. Has Realtek High Definition audio, graphic chipset Intel 82945G family; Soft data fax modem with smart CP (internal modem). It is connected to my DSL modem/router, Netgear DGN2000, with ethernet cable (as are my other two computers).

I start the installation. Finally the desktop shows up. As soon as I start trying to navigate, my mouse freezes and that's as far as I can go.

Just out of curiosity, I also tried to use my Mint 8 CD. It did the same thing. Gets the desktop up, then freezes. I am so frustrated because I really want Ubuntu on this machine. I planned on wiping out Vista Home Basic and giving the whole thing to Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fails At GDisk From Live USB

Sep 10, 2010

I'm having big problems trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 (32bit) on a new computer - nothing has ever been on it so it's fresh as a daisy. It has no optical drive so I created a live USB installation through Unetbootin, which starts up no problem and I can start the installation to the hard drive. After picking my keyboard layout in stage 3, the installer hangs. A crash message appears in the top right (but nothing overtly obvious happens and I can close the installation window easily). Trying to start GParted from the applications menu also results in the same crash error. Looking around I thought this may be some disk formatting issue so I created a new ext4 partition for the whole hard drive (160GB) with the disk utility which went without a hitch but hasn't made any difference.

I can however start GParted from the command line (gksudo gparted) into the partition created above just fine but still no dice when opening from the applications menu, it just pops up, starts to read then closes. Just to check if this was Ubuntu specific I also tried running Fedora off another USB and the same thing happens, the installer hangs when reading the hard disk. Looking around this seems like a common problem with many users finding the same issue (there's a 4 page topic about it going back 12 months)

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting From Live CD Fails - Initramfs Error

HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000.C HDS721010CLA332 (0F10383) 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Plus an old case and PSU and an old 18gb IDE drive, and an old CD-RW drive

I put the CD in and boot the machine. The initial Ubuntu screen comes up ("Ubuntu" with the line of dots below it) for a few seconds, and then it disappears and I see this text:

(initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs

At that point it hangs and will proceed no further. I've tried this with the latest Mythbuntu Live CD and the latest Ubuntu Desktop Edition Live CD. Both were x64 versions.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Video Fails On Boot - Install - Upgrade And Live CD

When I ran the distribution upgrade from 9.04 in update manager, my screen went blank on reboot and will not recover. Every time I reboot, screen goes blank. I cannot press CTRL-ALT F1 - F6 to gain access to text shells.

I tested booting from the 9.04 live CD and it works fine. So I downloaded the 9.10 live cd on another computer and booted it on the disabled system. Same exact problem on the live CD that I had upon installation: on boot screen goes black and cannot access text shells.

What can I do next to get out of this short of going back to 9.04, which has problems that I do not want to live with?

General :: Booting Fedora Dvd From Lilo?

Sep 7, 2010

I attempted to install slackware 13 on my laptop and was moderately successful. However in the process of attempting to configure it I appear to have messed something up. After reading about the problems I'm having I decided it would probably be easier to remove the current installation and start over.

I am now trying to install fedora from the dvd, but for some reason the computer will not boot the dvd. I have set the bios to boot from the drive first, and have tried burning the dvd twice, but every time the dvd spins up and shortly thereafter the computer loads lilo. Have I simply burned the dvd wrong twice? I used disk manager on mac os x and the disc reads just fine on the mac that burned it, but still no luck booting.
