Ubuntu Installation :: No Display Booting After Upgrading?

Jun 26, 2010

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop and have tried booting the ISO from a USB stick and also installing it to my HD with Wubi.Unfortunately my experience hasn't been any better than when I tried Ubuntu 8.10When booting the Live iso from my USB stick, my display goes into sleep mode (IE is receiving no signal) from the momentUbuntu begins booting until eventually the desktop appears several minutes later. If I was the average punter I would probably have assumed nothing was happening and rebooted.

As I have some experience with Linux (barely), I thought to try Ctrl-Alt-F1, which brought the monitor back to life and showed the terminal. As soon as I switched back to the main window (Ctrl-Alt-F8 I think) the display went back into sleep mode.Once it had booted, I did "sudo apt-get update", which worked and then "sudo apt-get upgrade", which did a lot of updates and then sent my monitor back into sleep mode, requiring me to reboot! When I tried to boot the Wubi install, again the display went into sleep mode as soon as Ubuntu started booting but this time the desktop never appeared and after about 5 minutes I rebooted. My motherboard is a Gigabyte MA780G-UD3H and I'm using the onboard HD3200 IGP and a Phenom II X3 720 and 4GB DDR2 1066Mhz RAM.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 64 Not Booting After Upgrading From 9.10 To 10.04?

May 7, 2010

I am sorry to post another thread regarding this problem, but after searching for hours in this forum and the internet, no suggested solution fixed my problem.I have 3 disks of 1TB in size. The first /dev/sda is where windows 7 64 is installed (partitioning: MBR).The second /dev/sdb is where I installed ubuntu 10.4 64bit (partitioning: GPT).The third is just for storage and is ntfs. No boot here.the grub2 is installed on mbr (/dev/sda)Also did a update-grub just to be sure, and testdisk.Grub finds all the oses and sort the to the list (including windows 7).Upon selecting Ubuntu, ubuntu boots fineBut If I select windows 7, I get a blackscreen and a blinking cursor on top left. No disk activity.I had a similar problem booting windows 7 when I had installed 9.10 in the past. The fix was to add the line:echo insmod part_msdoson the /etc/grub.d/00_header file because grub was inserting only the part_gpt module thus not recognizing the mbr partitions.

This is not a solution anymore.Trying to have a fix at least to boot into windows 7 using the windows disk, using repair, and command prompt as suggested somewhere here on the forum, did not solve anything. On the Repair dialog on start, windows see the installation, I choose fix, and it ends up that there are no problems to fix. After going to console, and issuing The BootRec commands, the /ScanOs and /RebuildBcd, say there are no windows installation. Great work Microsoft!. The installation is found on gui screen, but not on console.I did a clean install from the ubuntu 10.04 cd, just to see if solves the problem. but no. Same thing. And a stupid thing I did on update: I checked to install grub on every disk (just disks not partitions), when grub-config window showed up. Don't ask me why, I ask myself and I don't get an answer.Anyway, as I said, at least ubuntu boots fine and all disks are accessible. So, fortunately no data loss. The windows 7 option available on the grub menu ends up in a blinking cursor.Just in case, here is the results of my boot info script:

Ubuntu Installation :: Latest NVIDIA Display Driver - Uninstall If Upgrading ?

Apr 22, 2010

I've manually installed the latest NVIDIA display drivers from the website (newer than the restricted driver package that came with 9.10). When there is a new Linux kernel, or a newer Ubuntu version, will I need to uninstall that driver before upgrading? Will having this driver cause any special installation issues during upgrade (such as the need to reinstall the driver after upgrading)? I am using 9.10 through Wubi.

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting After Upgrading To Ubuntu 11.04 And Updating Packages?

Jul 11, 2011

Booted my laptop up for the first time in a while and ran

Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade to get updates for my packages. After installing I needed a reboot since I was on kernel 2.6.35-28. Post-reboot, I get stuck on a black screen with random artifacts after the purple screen after Grub, regardless of kernel (back to 2.6.35-22 is the oldest I have) with exception to the recovery mode options. Pressing the power button will shutdown the system in what seems to be the usual manner. The screen changes to the purple with ubuntu in the middle and the dot loading bar and shuts down.

I booted into recovery mode and opted to repair packages and rebooted but to no avail. I can get into a terminal by editing the boot options in Grub swapping out " quiet splash vt.handoff=7 " with "--verbose". Currently have a terminal on kernel 2.6.38-10 Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit. Win 7 partition also boots fine. This feels like a driver issue, but I'm not sure. Boot log (/var/log/boot.log) looks fine except for these lines:

Code:
fsck: fsck.ntfs: not found
fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.ntfs for /dev/sda2 /dev/sda3: clean, 262541/8560640 files, 2310841/36228480 blocks
init: ureadahead-other main process (723) terminated with status 4

The first 2 shouldn't be affecting my Ubuntu boot in this manner (other than failing to automatically mount my NTFS partition, which is a different problem), however the last one worries me. Doing some research on the termination status 4 of ureadahead-other I came across this page here, but am wary to just go around willy-nilly deleting things I don't know much about. It wouldn't be a great loss to simply blow the disk away and restart, but I'd rather salvage what's there if I can..

Ubuntu :: Laptop Has No Display After Upgrading?

Jan 10, 2011

I attempted to install ubuntu 10.10 (64x) on to my Dell Inspiron M5010. it booted to cd, and got to the main menu. i clicked install ubuntu, and it thought for a little while, then turned to a black screen and it had a cursor in the top left that blinked. it didnt do anything for a while. wouldn't let me type or anything.

my brother said it might have been the cd, so i made another one. same thing happened. i assumed ubuntu 10.10 (64x) didnt like my computer, and i gave up. until, i attempted to install an earlier version of ubuntu. I managed to get ubuntu 9.04 (64x) installed on to my Dell Inspiron M5010 with no problems. now here is where the problem lies...

i went to upgrade ubuntu 9.04 to the next avail (ubuntu 9.10) and the updates went smoothly. but when the upgrade was finished and the computer restarted, after booting the computer wouldnt show any display. but i could tell ubuntu was okay because even though i couldnt see, i logged onto my user name. so ubuntu works, it just doesnt have a display.

so i reinstalled 9.04 (64x) that way i would be able to get some insight on this situation, and maybe make some changes before i upgrade again. because ultimately i want to have Ubuntu 10.10 upgraded on here.

Ubuntu :: Display Driver Warning When Upgrading To 10.04 LTS?

Oct 16, 2010

planning to upgrade to the next LTS version i.e. 10.04. Have already applied all the updates and got the system up-to-date prior to upgrading. But when the upgrade starts I get the following message: Upgrading may reduce desktop effects and performance in games and other graphically intensive programs. This computer is currently using the AMD 'fglrx' graphics driver. No version of this driver is available that works with your hardware in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Do you want to continue ?Obviously, I clicked on NO and got out. What gives ? How come an upgrade is supposed to DEGRADE performance ? What kind of upgrade is that ? Also what is the implication for me ? Will I have to happy with 8.04 forever ?The machine in question is a Toshiba Satellite A100. I use GIMP quite a bit on it, so problems with graphics intensive applications is kind of worrying. What am I supposed to do ?? Upgrade anyway or stick with 8.04 ?

Ubuntu :: No Display On Screen After Upgrading Nvidia Drivers?

Sep 26, 2010

Recently I upgrade to the latest Nvidia driver for Linux. I checked that it was compatible with my Ubuntu 10.04 x64 system and my geforce gt 220 graphics card. I decided to go with the newest beta ver 260.1904. Installation went well, better actually than other times I tried to install the newest driver from their site. After installation was finished I restarted and let my system load up. As soon as it got past the ubuntu logo, the screen just went blank as if there was no signal.

I determined that everything but the display was working. When I pressed ctrl-alt-F1 the numlock light turned off (this usually happens) and was still toggle-able. When I went through the other x-servers (ctrl-alt-(F2-F6)) the light went out but could be turned off and on by hitting numlock. When booting in from recovery mode, the screen displayed up to the point where it would show recovery options with no noticeable error showing before the screen turned off. This is what worries me the most.I don't think it is my Xorg.conf because I replaced with a backup and still have the same problem.Does anyone have any ideas about why this is happening or how I can at least see the terminal. As a side note, its definitely not the card because the card worked fine before, works in windows and live cds, and I tried with an older nvidia card and had the same problem.

General :: Grub All Over Display While Booting With USB

Jan 7, 2010

I am trying to boot linux kernel from a USB stick. I performed following steps:

1. wrote Grub stag1 to MBR of USB with this command on my linux host.
dd if=/boot/grub/stage1 of=/dev/sdb1 bs=512 count=1

2. Mounted the USB and I copied the following files in my USB.
boot/grub/stage1
boot/grub/stage2

3. Plugged in the USB in the the target machine. Rebooted and changed the booting sequence to boot from USB

My problem is that instead of getting a boot prompt, iIam getting GRUB GRUB GRUB all over the display. I googled out for it and found that if we change the auto-detection oh HDD in bios to manual that may solve the issue, but that did not help. If you happen to know that I am following the correct steps and in right order please point me how can I resolve this issue of GRUB.

Also, unless I select the entry, Grub does not automatically start. The startup takes nearly 1.5 minutes. And, the Login screen, after the installation of Ubuntu Studio GDM, is much slower. I removed the Ubuntu-studio GDM package, still it takes about 20 seconds to allow me to enter Username and password. Any idea?

Ubuntu :: Booting After Installation (Dual Booting With Vista) - Error: No Such Devide Found

Jun 24, 2010

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.

Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.

When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading To 10.10 From 10.04?

Jun 24, 2010

I am upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 1. This is on my gaming machine so I can test it and if it screws my system up, I can reinstall. I have not seen any issues so far. I think there might be a thread already open for talking about 10.10 but I am creating this thread anyways.

The upgrade is going faster than when i first did the upgrade earlier this month.I am testing Ubuntu 10.10 on a computer with a 1.6Ghz AMD 64 processor. It has 3 GB ram and a 500GB hard drive. 128 MB video ram.

Note: This is The emachines EL 1200-06w I am using a Belkin wireless card which is only able to be used with the help of Windows Wireless Drivers (ndiswrapper).

I plan to report bugs in launchpad. Last time, Ubuntu could not start after an update. Now, I am risking down time by using the Alpha version again. I am installing by going to: Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal In Terminal, I enter in

Code:
sudo update-manager -d and then it asks for a password to open update manager. Then it shows the upgrade is available. I am still at the process of upgrading the computer. I am running Ubunut 10.04 32 bit at the moment.

UPDATE: I didn't need ndiswrapper, and I am able to now use Natty, where it works as it should.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 10.04 To 10.10?

Oct 23, 2010

Recently I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.04 from a CD which I had sent to me, but which I never actually used. So I put the CD in my laptop, used Wubi to install Lucid Lynx next to Windows in dual-boot, and restarted the laptop. Everything was OK. I noticed that the Update Manager didn't come up yet. I glanced at the notification area, and I wasn't connected to the Internet. So I entered wireless connection password and so Internet was back.I then opened Update Manager, changed release options to "Normal Releases" and was told of upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. So I pressed the button, successfully updated and restarted. BUT, when Ubuntu tried to reboot, it gave a whole list of errors, and proceeded to shut down. Right now I'm manually downloading 10.10 64-bit, and Wubi. And I uninstalled previous installation. If this works, then great. But I still want to know, just out of interest, why the hell did it do that? Is there issues with the upgrade? Was there errors in my Ubuntu installation?

There were various error messages during upgrade process, but it showed that I can continue without certain package. But, after restarting the laptop, I didn't found the new kernel entry in the GRUB. So, I continued with booting using older kernel version. It showed that ubuntu is booting but after sometime screen went totally blank. I even tried to boot into recovery mode, but faced same problem.

Then I booted with live CD, and chroot to the root folder of ubuntu on my HDD. After running command "dpkg --configure -a" I got error messages which are stored in attached file error-msg.txt.I cannot format the linux partition for a clean install.
