Fedora :: "trying To Unpack Rootfs Image As Initramfs" Fail To Load Install Cd?

May 15, 2010

I've had a hell of a time with an extremely unpredictable recently built computer. I don't even know where to start with thetory, so I'll try to share some key facts.Running Fc12It is a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR. Reviews on NewEgg havee complaints about instability and it's lack of claimed DDR3 support. I had to use setting described by another reviewer to underclock my memory to get it to work. It has since passed memtest many times.I've encountered mutliple occasions of a complete system freeze.

Booting after freeze seems to require a random amount of restarts to get it to come up. Sometimes I have to hit the reset button 30+ times until I can get the log in prompt to come up.Right now, I have one SATA HDD, in IDE compatibility mode in the system. dropped the FC12 Stable dvd in, the very DVD I installed the current system with, to install it again on another partition. I get to the same point every time, where it hangs:"trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs"Googling that didn't help me much, since it mostly seemed to address people messing with their own kernel builds.

If I choose "boot from local drive" on the options list from the install DVD, it goes to "PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT" with a blinking underscore cursor. Where when I boot normally, it will either give me JUST the blinking underscore alone, or the FC loading screen with no progress. I suspect this motherboard is a pile of **** and needs to be RMA'ed, or simply returned. Anyone care to support or reject that hypothesis?

Ubuntu Installation :: Initramfs BusyBox 'Could Not Load' USB Live Bootup Error

Feb 13, 2010

I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu 9.10 and used 'U904p' a program I had for creating 9.04 live USB I had before. I had 9.04 on the USB pen but thought that 9.10 would be better to install right away rather than upgrading it. So I run through the CLI and make it bootable and all that. I come to put in my pretty old (Spare parts mashed together) Linux box. I get this about 1 minute after the Ubuntu logo and loading bar:

Top of page: WARNING: Couldn't open directory /lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic: No such file or directory

Then lots of 'FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31-14generic/modules.dep No Such file or directory'

Then I am dumped in to Busybox in initramfs command line. I have been googling and look around the forums all last night and this morning. I find loads of stuff from 9.04 but not 9.10? I tried the old 'Pull USB pen when Ubuntu log shows' and 'Changed SATA settings' turned them off in end, using IDE. Could it be that I created it using the old U904p program. I will look in to the newer one. Seen it about on forums. Otherwise any ideas? I am wanting to build a FOG box for imaging all my PC's and trailing it for work.

Ubuntu :: Administrative Tools Fail To Load?

May 9, 2010

I found a similar problem. The poster used a similar title "Administrative tools fail to open - karmic" I also have karmic and four tools fail to load; Ubuntu Software Center, Hardware Drivers, System Testing, and Update Manger. Synaptic and System Monitor run. I ran update-manager and software-manger and was told module pygtk does not exist. I ran "sudo apt-get install pygtk" and it said that did not exist as a package. The terminal update and upgrade also work.

Code:
me@me-laptop:~$ update-manager
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/update-manager", line 26, in <module>
import pygtk
ImportError: No module named pygtk
me@me-laptop:~$ software-center

[Code]...

Would the best solution be to reinstall the OS from fresh downloads as at least the Hardware Drivers tool works with the live USB?

Fedora :: Error 28: "Not Enough Memory To Load This Specified Image" F13 + F14?

Mar 18, 2011

I have run into an issue with Fedora on my laptop that has me stumped. On this laptop I had partitioned the hard drive with Windows 7 (came with the PC), and initially Fedora 13. This setup worked fine for about four-five months, but recently Fedora will no longer boot. One day I attempted to load the OS and after GRUB get a screen that says "Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory." Windows continues to load fine however, and a memtest worked fine as well. When I attempted to run my Fedora 13 live-cd, I got the similar error "Error 28: Not enough memory to load this specified image."

Now, not having anything critical on the Unix partition, I decided to delete the Fedora partitions and start from scratch. I did so and the computer successfully loads a Fedora 14 live-cd albeit slowly (but still not the 13 one... I'm guessing the CD is just corrupted from scratches). Unfortunately, once I installed Fedora 14 on the empty space and tried running, I get my original error dealing with the item not fitting into memory. I'm out of ideas, and getting tired of the machine being Windows only.

The specs are as follows:
ASUS UL80VT Notebook
Intel U7300 1.3Ghz
4GB Ram
GRUB reports memory as:
607K lower / 14272 upper

Fedora Installation :: Anaconda Fail During Install?

Jan 2, 2011

I recently got a shiny new msi notebook and I decided I wanted to dual-boot Linux on it (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit). I started with Ubuntu, when that failed (the GUI wouldn't install properly) I tried Mint. It worked fine, but for some reason, I hate Mint. I deleted the Mint partitions and attempted to claim back the free space in a new partition for Windows 7. For some unbeknownst reason, it failed. Since I didn't desparately need the hard drive space, I said "screw it" and went about my day.

After seeing a friend using Fedora, I figured "why not?" So I downloaded F14 and burned it to a disc and booted it. All went well so I tried installing it. The install process went normal until I reached this screen: I press "Next", and I get this: (Full text here) I start to think that anaconda has something to do with my hard drive partitions, so I open Logical Volume Manager.

Partition 1 is a recovery partition (12 GB).
Partition 2, I have no idea, but it's only .1 GB.
Partition 3 is the Windows 7 partition (172.29 GB).
Partition 4 is 113.20 GB.
Unpartitioned space is 113.20 GB.

I know this can't be right, because my hard drive is only 320 GB (and those GB aren't even "real" GB) and the partitions add up to 410.79 GB. I'm thinking that Partition 4 and Unpartitioned space are the same thing, and the existence of the Partition 4 record is the aftermath of the failure to reclaim the disk space for Windows. So how do I go about fixing this (getting rid of Partition 4 or finding a work-around)?

After the little Balloon that shows its loading completes the screen scrambles, later a mouse pointer appears then freezes shortly after. When I remove Quiet from Kernel Params. Lots of text then Samething.. Scrambled Screen the Freeze. I have tried adding the Following Parameters to the Kernel (nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, acpi=noirq, noapic). This sounds like a common problem with ATI based graphics and all answers seem to point the "nomodeset" and the "xdriver=vesa" but they dont seem to help.
