Fedora :: Load An Image And It Is Completely Unusable?

Jun 27, 2011

Can anyone else confirm that Inkscape (from the FC15 distribution repo) is running as slow as a wet wig?

I have a fast machine (8 core 3.4ghz, 4GB RAM, 64bit FC15) everything else graphics wise is smooth and sexy but with inkscape try and zoom in with NO image loaded and it tic, tic, tic, jerky movements etc

Load an image and it is completely unusable, and has actually crashed my machine a couple of times when i was trying to work with a 5MB SVG file

Fedora X86/64bit :: 14 Completely Unusable; Probably Because Kernel Update

May 24, 2011

My main systems runs Fedora 14 x64 with the latest updates (I can't check anymore, but I believe it has the .13.91 x64 kernel). Since this afternoon it became unsuable. First, Opera Browser crashed and the crash report app of the browser showed up. Clicking one of the options there resulted to X crash, if I understood what really went on. No input, mouse or kb, I couldn't go to tty etc. I had to do a hard reset. Next boot proceeded normally up to the point that GNOME desktop is fully loaded. ABRT began reporting numerous kernel oops.
Rebooted again (noticed that init.d fails, so hard reset again) and tried past two kernel versions, same results.
Yum crashes and so does everything. I tried to revert all recent updates with yum history, but yum crashed.

Last update was May 22, and it updated kmod-nvidia.

before the reboot Opera 11.11 had crashed and it's own bug report tool came up. Clicking the "do not report this error now" option probably crashed X, because the screen went black and no input was possible (no mouse or keybord, so I couldn't go to tty either. Had to do a hard reset) Bug Reports:Kernel oops report was uploaded

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panel Is At 100% And Completely Unusable Rendering Gnome Unusable

Nov 19, 2010

I recently bought a second monitor and I had this set up perfectly fine with two panels on my primary display and one on my secondary. I've now gone away for the weekend (leaving the monitor) and I went to turn on my laptop and it didn't work.

When I login to a gnome session (or indeed a failsafe gnome session) I just got two horizontal white bars (where the panels would be). I switch to a terminal, login and run top and see that gnome-panel is on 100%. Running 'killall gnome-panel' does nothing (tried a few times).

I've had to install xfce4 just to type this message. Is there any way I can 'reset' gnome-panel or any other fix? Or even a workaround would be nice. I'm on 9.10 by the way. I am going to upgrade at some point but its not really an option yet.

Ubuntu :: Aptitude Is Completely Unusable In 11.04

Jul 7, 2011

Since 11.04 was released, I've used it in Gnome and now also KDE, and this problem is in both. Aptitude is completely unusable. The main issue is that when downloading packages, it disconnects every minute if not every half a minute, making package installing a very hard process and making the configuration of a new OS take days (just to install 1GB of packages). Ontop of the disconnections, aptitude doesn't even want to go full speed when it IS connected.

The other issues involve repositories. Whether it's the official Ubuntu package servers, ANY of its many mirrors, or even my own custom PPAs, connecting to ANY repository when I reload my packages is a hit-or-miss, and it's completely impossible to get them all in one refresh (in fact, I don't think I've been able to access the main server since upgrading. Ever. I've been on the US server). This makes installing all of my packages take even LONGER. Also, to add insult to injury, the list files in /var/lib/apt/lists constantly corrupt themselves and make themselves unusable, ESPECIALLY the PPA lists (anything that uses launchpad has to be disabled at all times unless I have to update its program, or else I have to delete those list files every day).

Googling any of these issues separately gets me nowhere, so I'm making a topic, and it better not be the millionth topic I've made here that never got solved. The problem can't be my router or modem because my brother runs aptitude just fine on his 11.04 laptop. This issue is within my computer.

I meant apt-get. You mean they aren't the same program with two ways to run them? Yes, apt-get is the problemed one. I never actually type "aptitude" into the Terminal. As a consequence, Synaptic and KPackageKit and any other apt-get-using program is messed up as well.

Fedora :: Load Average Is Consistently 0.5 - 1.75 When PC Is Completely Idle (99% According To Top)

Dec 7, 2010

I recently upgraded from Fedora 11 to Fedora 14 on my Dell Latitude E6400 notebook PC. It's a Dual core processor, as seen in the uname provided below:

uname -a:
Linux COMPUTERNAME 2.6.35.6-48.fc14.i686 #1 SMP Fri Oct 22 15:34:36 UTC 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
redhat-release:
Fedora release 14 (Laughlin)

Since the upgrade, I've noticed some unexplainable behavior: The load average is consistently 0.5 - 1.75 when my PC is completely idle (99% according to top). No processes are in the D (I/O) state, and I have no Zombie processes. This happens on a fresh boot, every time. It gets worse and less worse, and bounces from unusable (cursor stops moving as I type in the terminal, to actually losing keystrokes at times). I'm wondering if anybody else is experiencing similar issues, or knows of a (the) kernel bug which is causing this behavior? Actively researching the issue. I've come across the following: Tens of wakes per second in "[kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick" on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled

Fedora Networking :: Web Pages Dont Load Completely ?

Dec 14, 2010

I am using BSNL WLL (Wireless Local Loop) on my Fedora system to connect to the internet My modem is Huawei ETS-1201, I use wvdial The problem is that, on every linux distribution I tried, Webpages dont load or load incompletely randomly This happens most during peak net traffic. I tried to edit the /etc/ppp/options file to set my MTU and MRU to 576

But, It does not seem to be working. There is no such problem on Windows and I can connect flawlessly I takes several retries to connect to a site. I sometimes become frustrated with this and switch to Windows But as you all know, Windows is not the right OS for people who want more from their computers.

Below my specs:

So the first image will display on the page, and when a user puts their cursor over it, then it will load image 2. When they press it, it loads image 3.

My web browser (Firefox or any other web browsers) can't completely load the desired webpages like yahoo.com or even google.com.But as I read different blogs in this forum, I have convinced myself that there is an internet connection.= when I ping different websites, Iseem to get good responses from those sites. Only when I need to browse the webpage do get no results.= ifconfig seems to respond well enough.= even "route" shows the IP my router/gateway correctly. The problem , I think, lies on the proxy settings or the DSN.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Restoring The Image To A RAID Volume Is Completely Transparent To The OS?

Sep 16, 2010

Right now I have a OpenSuSE 11.1 server running on a single hard drive. I want to install the HighPoint RocketRAID 1740 card and utilize RAID 10.I wanted to know if the following process would work ok:

1. Image the current hard drive using clonezilla and remove the drive.

2. Install the RAID card with 4 hard drives of the same make and model as the current drive

3. Create the logical volume

4. Restore the image to that volume

Since I am restoring the image to a RAID volume, is that completely transparent to the OS? Or do I need to do a clean install on that volume and reconfigure everything?

Fedora :: "trying To Unpack Rootfs Image As Initramfs" Fail To Load Install Cd?

May 15, 2010

I've had a hell of a time with an extremely unpredictable recently built computer. I don't even know where to start with thetory, so I'll try to share some key facts.Running Fc12It is a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR. Reviews on NewEgg havee complaints about instability and it's lack of claimed DDR3 support. I had to use setting described by another reviewer to underclock my memory to get it to work. It has since passed memtest many times.I've encountered mutliple occasions of a complete system freeze.

Booting after freeze seems to require a random amount of restarts to get it to come up. Sometimes I have to hit the reset button 30+ times until I can get the log in prompt to come up.Right now, I have one SATA HDD, in IDE compatibility mode in the system. dropped the FC12 Stable dvd in, the very DVD I installed the current system with, to install it again on another partition. I get to the same point every time, where it hangs:"trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs"Googling that didn't help me much, since it mostly seemed to address people messing with their own kernel builds.

If I choose "boot from local drive" on the options list from the install DVD, it goes to "PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT" with a blinking underscore cursor. Where when I boot normally, it will either give me JUST the blinking underscore alone, or the FC loading screen with no progress. I suspect this motherboard is a pile of **** and needs to be RMA'ed, or simply returned. Anyone care to support or reject that hypothesis?

Fedora :: Error 28: "Not Enough Memory To Load This Specified Image" F13 + F14?

Mar 18, 2011

I have run into an issue with Fedora on my laptop that has me stumped. On this laptop I had partitioned the hard drive with Windows 7 (came with the PC), and initially Fedora 13. This setup worked fine for about four-five months, but recently Fedora will no longer boot. One day I attempted to load the OS and after GRUB get a screen that says "Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory." Windows continues to load fine however, and a memtest worked fine as well. When I attempted to run my Fedora 13 live-cd, I got the similar error "Error 28: Not enough memory to load this specified image."

Now, not having anything critical on the Unix partition, I decided to delete the Fedora partitions and start from scratch. I did so and the computer successfully loads a Fedora 14 live-cd albeit slowly (but still not the 13 one... I'm guessing the CD is just corrupted from scratches). Unfortunately, once I installed Fedora 14 on the empty space and tried running, I get my original error dealing with the item not fitting into memory. I'm out of ideas, and getting tired of the machine being Windows only.

The specs are as follows:
ASUS UL80VT Notebook
Intel U7300 1.3Ghz
4GB Ram
GRUB reports memory as:
607K lower / 14272 upper

Situation: I have to install multiple SUSE linux installs onto blade servers without cdroms.

Goal: Create a bootable USB drive that contains multiple DVD Isos. Upon boot, a menu is displayed that allows the choice of several OS installs.

Problem: I just can't figure out how to format syslinux.cfg to load my specified iso image. Here is semi sudo code for what I want to do with my config:

sudo syslinux config

menu label install SLES 10 x86
kernel linux
append <path_to_iso=/sles10/dvd1_x86.iso> autoyast=10x86.xml

Googling tells you quite a bit about syslinux.cfg, but it doesn't reallyt tell you how to load specific file for installation.

I am not too familiar with writing programs for gtk and its been a while since I've fiddled with C. I went over the tutorial for gtk and it seams pretty easy to get a window to display, but I do not see anything that refers to loading an image or displaying it in the window. I am wondering if this can be done purely with gtk or will I need to use some type of image library like imlib2?

Ubuntu :: Create A Hard Drive Image That Just Load Up?

Jun 23, 2011

I'm overall realitively new to Ubuntu 11.0.4 and I had some questions regarding this operating system. I just wanted to inform everyone, that I'm attempting to make a transition, from a life time Windows user and a current Windows 7 Ultimate user, to being a Ubuntu user.

I am becoming fedup with Windows 7, because i dislike how much system resources, it requires to run, and in addition I'm skeptical about Windows security. I had a lot of bad experiences with the Windows updates as well, so I was kind of alienated, as one can imagine. What I did like about Windows 7, is how easy it was, to configure the user group policies. I was wondering if you were able to do that in Ubuntu latest release.

I also was wondering, if it were possible, to create a hard drive image, that I can just load up, if I ever needed to reformat, like I did in Windows 7.

Fedora X86/64bit :: F13 Slows Down Randomly So Computer Is Unusable

Sep 17, 2010

I'm new to Fedora/Linux trying it out because I'm becoming hacked off with Windows taking so much time to do anything. The problem I have is that every now and again the computer slows down so drastically that the mouse movements are jerky, response to clicks/key inputs take about 2-3 mins to get a response and the only solution is to press and hold the power button. I'm running a Packard Bell Dot M/U. It has mobile celeron 1.3GHz 64 bit, 3GB ram. Intel wi-fi, atheros LAN (i think), HDMI output. I believe that it is v similar to an Acer Aspire 1410 (but not 100% same).

Fedora :: Desktop Wallpaper And Icons Become Strecthed Unusable

Dec 10, 2010

I already posted on the compiz community forums but I figure more eyes are better than less. I hope the "software" forum is the right place to post, I don't believe I'm having any hardware issues. What I'm seeing is strange desktop corruption/stretching when compiz starts, almost as if compiz thinks my desktop is about four time wider (horizontal) than it really is and this makes nautilus go a bit crazy. All other compiz functionality seems fine. Before compiz starts (with metacity or openbox), the desktop (nautilus) appears normal. I've tried both settings for show_desktop in gconf and they both result in the same (bad) effect. If I use a gradient as my background instead of an image, I see that the gradient is also wrong in the same way (wider than it should be).

Attached are two screen shots: streched-small.jpeg is my desktop with compiz and normal-small.jpeg is the same desktop after running "metacity --replace".I have a dual head setup with an ATI X18000 running two identical monitors, both at 1280x1024. This problem does NOT happen if I disable one of the display or clone them nor does it happen if I place one monitor on top of the other. The problem only occurs in dual head mode and only if the monitors are logically positioned side by side, horizontally.I don't think it factors in but it's worth mentioning I'm doing this with an LTSP 5 thin client configuration. My thin client just happens to be a PC with an X1800 at the moment.
