Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia Drivers Fail To Load After Upgrade To Karmic

Apr 17, 2010

Laptop with Nvidia integrated GO 6100. Now stuck in low graphics mode.

Uninstall/reinstall ENVY. No joy.

"Hardware Drivers" reports that Nvidia drivers version 173 are activated at the moment, but not in use. Got the same report from the 185s. 'nvidia-xconfig' produced no results.

Not sure where to go from here. Please assist.

On a positive note, my onboard Broadcom wireless is working without ndiswrapper.

OpenSUSE Install :: Gnome3 - NVidia Drivers - Multiple Monitor Fail ?

Jul 24, 2011

I have installed openSUSE with Gnome3.

I had to install the nVidia proprietary drives so the OS would boot into Gnome3 and not fail safe mode. Without the proprietary drivers installed the display settings said:

Driver: software rasterizer in use

After installing the nVidia drivers Gnome3 works in one monitor, but I would like to be able to use my other two monitors (totaling three with two video cards.)

When I run nvidia-settings to generate an xorg.conf file it hangs, so I used nvidia-xorgconf to generate the xorg file and then used nvidia-settings to configure my extra screens.

This fails with a permissions error, running sudo nvidia-settings fails with the following error:

ERROR:

So, I ran nvidia-settings, saved the settings file to my /home/$USER dir, then copied xorg.conf to /etc/X11/

Logging out and logging back into Gnome fails with the error:

This problem extends to Ubuntu running Gnome3, so my thinking is:
a) Imma id10t and something in my xorg.conf file is wrong,
b) there is an issue with Gnome3/nVidia/Multiple displays.

I would really like to use Gnome3, it works on multiple other machines (ironically all ATI devices) just not the machine I use all day long...

Here is my xorg.conf file as generated by nvidia-settings.

CentOS 5 :: Can't Install Nvidia Drivers (Unable To Load The Kernel Module "nvidia.ko")?

Jul 28, 2009

So I have been trying to install these drivers forever and after going through a million forum posts and Google searches I have been unsuccessful. The process I have been trying starts as such: I hit ctrl-alt-f1 and then login as root. i then change to run level 3 by doing /sbin/init 3. After that's done I cd to desktop and do sh NVIDIA-LINUX-x86-185.18.29-pkg1.run --kernel-source-path /usr/src/kernel/2.6.18-128.2.1.el15-i686

If I don't give it the source path it can't find the source tree. Eventually I get the error: ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Old Video Card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT Now Beginning To Fail - Which Way Is Best, ATI Or Nvidia?

May 3, 2010

I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. Right now I'm playing Eternal Lands on the Linux side. Looking to spend $100-$150 on a new card.I have a Core2Duo Wolfdale 3.0, with 2ghz ram and run Lucid 32bit. Also run windows Vista64Ultimate on dual boot (rarely).

I would love to buy a new ATI 5770 or 5830, ATI budget cards seem to be much better for the buck over budget Nvidia cards, but I'm concerned with ATI drivers and long term with Ubuntu. On the Nvidia side I'm considering the GTS 250. The only advantage I can find is lower power consumption with Nvidia and Ubuntu has always preferred Nvidia over ATI, as far as working drivers go.As Far as Ubuntu and Lucid is concerned, which way is best, ATI or Nvidia? Has anything changed with ATI support, that could make theor cards more compatible now and in the future?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Set Nvidia Drivers - Dual Monitor Without Proprietary Drivers?

Apr 8, 2010

I have been using ubuntu for quite a long time, and for the first time, I am now unable to set nvidia drivers to work. I have just install ubuntu 9.10 amd64 on an AMD 64 athlong X2 with a GEForce 6500 nvidia card.

The only reason I need the proprietary drivers is to use two monitors.

I am going crazy, I have tested everything I have found on the web. I have tried all the nvidia drivers version, I have tried envyng, ... but nvidia do not work!!

I am trying Xinerama with nv, but it does not work either!!!

Here is my xorg.conf file in which I have tried to use nv driver to set dual monitor. X fails to load and it says that screen 0 is deleted, that devices are found but there are no matches in the config file. Any clue?

I can't figure out how to install the nvidia drivers for my nvidia 8800 GT video card. I've followed some other posts and all the posts seemed either incomplete, or led me down a path of which eventually broke my installation, that I needed to reinstall the entire ubuntu system.Again, it may not have been broken, i just didnt know how to get back in to the gui version of ubuntu, the instructions took me to the console terminal

1.) I've installed the ubuntu 10.10 64bit for i386 in an oracle virtualBox..

2.) downloaded from nvidia.com "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.44.run"

Ubuntu :: NVIDIA: Failed To Load The NVIDIA Kernel Module?

Aug 31, 2010

I spent quite a lot of time jumping from one thread to another trying to fix a problem with my NVIDIA drivers in Lucid. I was getting the error message on startup: NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module ...Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error, 0) No drivers available".

After a lot of trial and error, this is what worked for me (I have updated this thread following [URL]):

- Download the latest NVIDIA driver from www.nvidia.com/page/drivers.html

- In the terminal cd to the directory where you downloaded the driver package (e.g., $ cd Downloads)and make it executable (e.g., $ sudo chmod +x ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run)

- Edit blacklist.conf $ gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

and add the following lines to the end of the file:

#recommended by http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1467074
blacklist vga16fb

Ubuntu :: Administrative Tools Fail To Load?

I found a similar problem. The poster used a similar title "Administrative tools fail to open - karmic" I also have karmic and four tools fail to load; Ubuntu Software Center, Hardware Drivers, System Testing, and Update Manger. Synaptic and System Monitor run. I ran update-manager and software-manger and was told module pygtk does not exist. I ran "sudo apt-get install pygtk" and it said that did not exist as a package. The terminal update and upgrade also work.

Code:

Would the best solution be to reinstall the OS from fresh downloads as at least the Hardware Drivers tool works with the live USB?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 & 9.10 Installs Fail, Asus MX-M2V + NVidia 7600 GS?

Jul 31, 2010

I am completely failing at installing most variants of ubuntu on my desktop (ubuntu & kubuntu 10.04, 9.10, normal & alternate, and mint 9 tried, all MD5 checks OK). My system has: Motherboard: Asus MX-M2V (google +ubuntu) Graphics card: gigabyte nVidia 7600 GS (google + ubuntu) 2GB RAM, AMD64 dual core, etc.

[Code]...

I've bean able to get past this stage by removing the "quiet splash" install option, however it still fails, usually with a garbled screen. The alternate CDs seem to work better but still ultimatley fail with a garbled screen. Mint 9 when live from the CD had the mouse cursor missing on the normal greed desktop, only a few pixels over a square about 1cm x 1cm were shown. I managed to run the "hardinfo" report guessing where the mouse was and save to a USB stick, I have attached the report.

Reading forums I saw a few things to try so I just installed Ubunto 9.10 alternate CD adding "xforce vesa" and "nomodeset" to the command line. During install I disconnected my 2 windows HDs so as to simplify matters. The install was to have a whole HD (Maxtor 160GB, IDE).

On booting with only that HD attached I am presented with the ubuntu logo, followed by a black screen with the mouse pointer only. At a certain point in the screen the pointer changeds to a insert text cursor. Once I managd to get something to happen by typing in my passowrd at this cursor but after this point only a garbled screen. Another interesting thing, after this I installed GAG to the MBR of my primary SATA drive which successfully loads either of my win HDs, but when I try to use GAG to boot to the ubuntu HD it reports "sector boot not found or invalid" I can get a command line on the HD with the ubuntu 9.10 screen using the "Recovery option" from the install CD but then do not know what to try.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Fail To Initialize The NVIDIA Kernel Module?

Sep 29, 2010

Problem: computer and graphics card had been running for months without problem. For some reason, last night, things locked up...wouldn't think it's related, but happened when I noticed I was locked out of creating new folders on my usb attached My Book storage drive. So, from terminal I tried to sudo change permissions to read/write. Everything locked up. Now, every time I reboot it states needing to use low graphics mode "Screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly."

When I check the error log I see: "(EE) Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module.."(EE) NVIDIA(0): ***Aborting* Screens found but none have a usable configuration. Fatal Server Error - no screens found"

If I try to then start in safe low graphics mode or restart X, I get the Ubuntu splash screen with the 5 dots that turn red to show progress...but nothing ever happens. I can switch to VT 1, login at command line, and type "startx" and then the graphical desktop loads just fine. Video playback, etc. is perfect and fine - not in low graphics mode at all. System seems totally normal.

However, I have to go through these steps each time I reboot. Also, I noticed that when I try to boot from Ubuntu Live CD I can't. I get as far as picking English as a language, then screen goes blank and goes to power saving mode (no signal being sent). This greatly concerns me as even though I have a work around for now - getting to command line then startx'ing - if I ever needed to reinstall from the CD, it seems I can't.

Some info on my pc:Running 10.04 on Compaq Presario SR1950NX AMD 64 GeForce 6150 LE/PCI/SSE2/3DNow! <- believe built onto motherboard on what I can do to fix? Is this a sign that something is wrong with my video card?

Fedora :: Error "Failed To Load Module "nvidia" (module-specific Error,0) No Drivers Available

I've been unable to boot into x using the real-time kernel from CCRMA at home. I get the error "Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error,0) no drivers available. I'm using the driver from Nvidia. I know that this is not an official Fedora kernel and I should be bothering CCRMA about this, but in the mean time could I edit the entry in grub.conf so that it will use the Nouveau driver for that kernel only? That way I could "dual-boot", and just use the rt kernel when I want to use audio software and don't need 3d graphics.

Debian :: Building Kernel - Initrd Fail And Nvidia Can't Find Source

Feb 25, 2010

So I'm building a custom kernel cuz I want the fbcondecor patch in my kernel. I use the same .config that 2.6.32 debian kernel package comes with. This kernel runs perfectly. I pass --initrd to make-kpkg when building the package but no initrd is built when I install it so I have to make it using "mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.33 2.6.33" to get it to boot. Now when I try to build the nvidia drivers it complains it can't find the source. I did build kernel_headers and installed them also the source is in /usr/src/linux. I also tried to specify the path by passing --kernel-source-path= to the nvidia script but no change. What is going on? I've done this fifty times before and never had any problems. Has there been some changes to how debian kernel packages are built? EDIT: Just thought I'd add some info about the steps I took.

Code:
tar xjvf linux-2.6.33.tar.bz2
ln -s linux-2.6.33 linux
cd linux
patch -p1 < ../fbcondecor-0.9.6-2.6.33-rc7.patch
cp /boot/config-2.6.32-trunk-686 ./.config

make menuconfig Loaded .config then I removed support for maxtorfb, tile blitting and some sirrusfb thing, nothing thats relevant to my system. Changed cpu from Pentium 4 to Core 2 and added framebuffer decor
support from my patch, exited and saved. Then:

[Code]....

EDIT2: I have now tried to build 2.6.32.8 in the same way with the same strange results, anyone have any thoughts as to what I'm doing wrong just throw it at me, I'm getting desperate and running out of ideas. I've checked all the kernel source symlinks and everything looks good.
