I work for a small business that wants a semi-proprietary (branded) os, I've quickly assembled the needed os in susestudio, I now need to alter a lot of images, what's the best way to unpack and repack into a bootable iso?
View 1 RepliesI got a hard drive with an image of an older redhat OS that i need to do some work with. The hard drive isnt bootable but i need to get into it somehow. I am not even close to an expert on these kinds of things, but i will provide the information that ive got.

The simplest way the occurs to me to do this is to virtualize the OS on it. So i installed hypervisor from yast, but (i think) it requires an image of the OS to virtualize it, not some partitions on a hard drive. Is there an easy way around this?
I'm unable to boot into a gparted cd to make modifications to my partition table. I've only noticed it since grub took over the duty of boot manager after installing openSUSE 11.3. Are there any other utilities that I can use either from within openSUSE or boot to, to do the same thing?

Note: I just want to make a bootable USB, not to install 11.3 on USB. ( There are many reasons to do that, e.g., USB is much easier to carry, and also reuse later for new versions. ) But it seems there is no instruction to do that.

I have formatted the stick and I have set the boot flag in KDE partitionmanager. Then I have put the .iso on it, using Unetbootin. When I now try to boot it, I get the message

Is maybe the boot flag not set, despite the partitionmanager shows it set? Can I set it also afterwards, after I have installed the .iso on the stick (I tried this already, did not change anything)? Or is there something wrong with the .iso?
Using imagewriter, I was wondering if it's possible to store backup files on it. I have a 8GB usb drive but the imagewriter uses less 2GB to write the iso to it.

and Ubuntu 10.04 now on the NetBook,
but have access to a Windows XP computer too...

I know it can be done, but im not finding how exactly.
What ive tried so far. I've taken VBoxManage terminal tool and converted the VDI to a .img file, and tried to move that to my second physical disk, but it didnt work at all.
After some thinking, I booted to acronis true image within my virtual machine, and cloned the C:/ drive of windows over to my second hard drive. That got me further, but doesn't boot fully. Comes up to windows xp logo, and black screen boot loops.
Ive heard about using vditool to create a .raw file, and then go from there, but im at a loss to find vdi tool
How can i move my virtual machine to a physical, bootable partition on a second drive?
I would like to copy my system into a DVD that I can later use as a bootable disk. Having such a disk could be handy, as it would contain current software upgrades.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to use SuseStudio "preload" and "live" .iso images and the instructions at SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE to create a bootable USB drive.dd_rescue ends after the expected amount of time--without reporting errors--yet "fdisk -l" reports that the device does not contain a valid partition table. The USB key does not boot and appears to have no data.
For what it's worth, my build host is Gentoo on 2.6.39, and I have the latest dd-rescue available. The USB disk is a PNY attache 4GB and works fine with any ISO's supported by unetbootin. The only other bare metal I have here is a netbook running Mepix, so I can't make use of solutions that start with "Boot your existing OpenSuse workstation
I installed openSUSE 11.3 on my iMac along with "Mac Snow Leopard, Windows 7" to make it a "Triple Boot". But after installing the "GRUB/LILO", it does not chain with the boot loader "REFIT" that I use. Each time I try to boot into "Windows/openSUSE", it shows a message: no boot device found, insert boot disc". So why isn't the "GRUB/LILO" working?

I don't even know where to start with thetory, so I'll try to share some key facts.Running Fc12It is a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR. Reviews on NewEgg havee complaints about instability and it's lack of claimed DDR3 support. I had to use setting described by another reviewer to underclock my memory to get it to work. It has since passed memtest many times.I've encountered mutliple occasions of a complete system freeze.
Booting after freeze seems to require a random amount of restarts to get it to come up. Sometimes I have to hit the reset button 30+ times until I can get the log in prompt to come up.Right now, I have one SATA HDD, in IDE compatibility mode in the system. dropped the FC12 Stable dvd in, the very DVD I installed the current system with, to install it again on another partition. I get to the same point every time, where it hangs:"trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs"Googling that didn't help me much, since it mostly seemed to address people messing with their own kernel builds.
If I choose "boot from local drive" on the options list from the install DVD, it goes to "PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT" with a blinking underscore cursor. Where when I boot normally, it will either give me JUST the blinking underscore alone, or the FC loading screen with no progress. I suspect this motherboard is a pile of **** and needs to be RMA'ed, or simply returned. Anyone care to support or reject that hypothesis?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've just purchased HP Mini 5103 with preinstaled SLED, but I want to replace with 11.3. But I have serious problem with booting from USB. Due to problem with BIOS bug/feature, 5103 is unabled to boot using USB with recursive partition (which is created from hybrid openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso either with ImageWriter of dd). When I create bootable USB with syslinux and copying of iso to existing partition, I ended with error "failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drive" (I have tried also both initrdud files, older one failed with "failed to detect USB", newer with "failed to detect CD"). I have also tried to install from full openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso which I have copied to USB using Unetbootin, but with this bootable USB I ended with "invalid or corrupt kernel image".
View 7 Replies View RelatedBefore I changed to linux, I was on Windows 7. My computer already had 4 different partitions, and would not let me create more. And so, I had to delete one of the partitions. I chose to get rid of the "recovery" partition. I used "Macrium Reflect" to burn a bootable CD of my recovery stuff. Anyways, fast forward to this morning. I got tired of the KDE desktop, and I decided to switch to Gnome. So, I went into windows 7, deleted the three OpenSUSE partitions, and moved the remaining space back to my C: (windows) drive. (don't ask me why :S)
Anyways, so I take a look, after it's done deleting/moving stuff, and I'm told that "no bootable devices detected".. This made me angry, as I am certain I didn't delete any of the windows partitions. So, I thought, I'll just use my recovery disk, because I quite literally, have no personal data on my computer to lose.Except, my recovery disk is not actually bootable. So, then, after screaming in rage, I booted up OpenSUSE from my KDE CD, and was gonna take a look at things in YaST. Except, YaST will not actually open.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying some time now to get drobox going. After resolving problems with the repo-file it is now downloading fine then stops unpacking by 97 %. I tried using threads which tell that it is selinux which does not give permissions for the install. Trying to block selinux during the installation has not worked out. Is there a way to get it going it is something I do need every day?

creating a bootable floppy from a bootable floppy image on a NON Linux machine I am trying to install dsl (damnsmallLinux) on one of my old Compaq 2000 Deskpro machine having 256RAM and 2 GB hardisk. (which I hope to increase to 8 or 10 GB ...can I use a larger disk capacity??) I have downloaded the floppy bootable image from the website using a machine a fedora OS machine that does not have a floppy drive. I have even converted the image file to an iso file.
