Ubuntu :: Boot Fail, Initramfs Starts?

May 1, 2011

I have been using 11.04 for about a day, I go to boot up and it goes into busybox initramfs instead of booting into Ubuntu. The options to my boot in grub, and the errors I get when booting into initramfs are in the pictures attached to this post.

Here was I get on my screen.

I don't know why this is happened. But before I rebooted, I could not see any content on Windows like update or shut-down (if I tried to install something and it asked for confirmation, that window was blank. Or before I shut down, I had to push enter, since that windows was blank.)

I don't think I installed anything and computer was working just fine before.

I don't want to reinstall everything again.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install 11.04 Starts Up To Blank Screen/initramfs Prompt?

Jun 17, 2011

I installed Umbuntu (MythBuntu 11.04 as backend system) and initially when starting it just went to a blank screen (no prompt, nothing). After going through safe mode I was able to get to a prompt and into the UI in low graphic mode. After updating the graphic drivers (nvidea) to the latest and changing some grub options (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi=off splash") when I restarted it went to the busybox initramfs prompt. I typed "exit" and the UI started up normally.

The next time I restarted it went through to a blank screen. I typed "exit" again and enter and the UI started up normally again (even though I couldn't see what I was typing at the time). While I was going through the recovery mode I do remember some messages about disk not found/mounted, when I googled it I found stuff about entering rootdelay=90 in menu.lst which doesn't exist anymore. Is there a similar option I can enter somewhere in 11.04?Also I'm new to Ubuntu (in fact any Linux distro as an admin), where would I find any log files that may help with finding the problem.

Fedora :: "trying To Unpack Rootfs Image As Initramfs" Fail To Load Install Cd?

May 15, 2010

I've had a hell of a time with an extremely unpredictable recently built computer. I don't even know where to start with thetory, so I'll try to share some key facts.Running Fc12It is a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR. Reviews on NewEgg havee complaints about instability and it's lack of claimed DDR3 support. I had to use setting described by another reviewer to underclock my memory to get it to work. It has since passed memtest many times.I've encountered mutliple occasions of a complete system freeze.

Booting after freeze seems to require a random amount of restarts to get it to come up. Sometimes I have to hit the reset button 30+ times until I can get the log in prompt to come up.Right now, I have one SATA HDD, in IDE compatibility mode in the system. dropped the FC12 Stable dvd in, the very DVD I installed the current system with, to install it again on another partition. I get to the same point every time, where it hangs:"trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs"Googling that didn't help me much, since it mostly seemed to address people messing with their own kernel builds.

If I choose "boot from local drive" on the options list from the install DVD, it goes to "PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT" with a blinking underscore cursor. Where when I boot normally, it will either give me JUST the blinking underscore alone, or the FC loading screen with no progress. I suspect this motherboard is a pile of **** and needs to be RMA'ed, or simply returned. Anyone care to support or reject that hypothesis?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Upgrade Won't Boot Initramfs

Dec 13, 2010

I upgrade to 10.10, and now I can't boot normally. The only way I can get X going is if I boot to the previous kernel's recovery mode and choose failsafeX.

In an attempt to fix this, I ran

Code:
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh -a

However, I get this,

Code:
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-23-generic
stop: Unknown instance:
dpkg-maintscript-helper: error: couldn't identify the package

After update I reboot my lappy and it won't get to my ubuntu anymore but works fine with my xp. I tried several searches on the net to find the solution but can't really figure it out. I just tried running Boot info script as it might help experts figure out what's wrong with my box and here's what it shows:

Ubuntu :: Initramfs Boot Error - Mount: Mounting /dev /root/sys Failed: No Such File Or Directory

Feb 19, 2011

Okay, so on occasion when I boot into ubuntu I get this error

[mount: mounting /dev /root/dev failed: no such file or directory]
[mount: mounting /dev /root/sys failed: no such file or directory]
[mount: mounting /dev /root/proc failed: no such file or directory]

[code]...

I get the error when I open any of the kernel versions or any recovery mode. Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop is the only OS installed on the computer, which is a Lenovo S10-3. I can eventually get it to go away, sometimes by repeatedly unplugging it and plugging it back in, and sometimes I will boot into GParted, do nothing, then restart and it will work.I have found some solutions online, but all of them involve the error happening as a result of dual booting with Windows.I have made no major system changes recently, so I can't see anything like that being the problem.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Starts On Boot - How To Stop This

Mar 17, 2010

Just over the past few days Firefox 3.5.8 now starts as soon as the desktop has loaded - it's not set to do this in 'Startup Applications' - how do I stop it starting on boot? Also, over the same period, if I click a javascript link, nothing happens, it no longer opens the relevant page or image; so I click it again and still nothing, however several minutes later the page/image may open, but not always. Also if I close Firefox, then later click a link in an email it no longer opens Firefox - I then have to go into 'System Monitor > Processes', find and then 'end process' for Firefox (cause it's sleeping) before I can actually start it.I've gone in Synaptic and 'reinstalled' Firefox, but it made no difference. I cleared the cache and all cookies as well - could something have got into Firefox, and if so how can I fix it ?

I'm using karmic 9.10 32 bit with kernel 2.6.31-20-generic-pae update - it appears it's a javascript problem within Firefox as I can no longer open the popup window for online banking from my banks webpage link - I can do this in other browsers such as Epiphany, Google Chrome and Opera, but not in Firefox

Ubuntu :: Gnote Miraculousness (Auto Starts Magically After Boot)

Apr 16, 2011

I've had this problem for months now and I couldn't find a way to solve it. The issue is pretty simple: 'gnote' app auto-starts when the system is booted and I've yet to find a way to stop it.

I've checked the following folders:
/home/user/.config/autostart/
/home/user/.kde/Autostart/
/home/user/.local/share/autostart/

And I've also checked the following apps/modules:
'Boot-up Manager' (BUM)
Autostart - KDE Control Module
And Nothing. No sign of 'gnote' anywhere.

Now, I know I could just uninstall the app and forget about this (I don't even use it anymore) The thing is that I'm really amazed of how incredibly difficult it is to manage something as simple as the apps that start-up with the system (something that could be done in the deprecated Windows XP with 'msconfig' since it first came up, I don't know.. a decade ago?) I want to understand how this works because I like Ubuntu + KDE a lot and I have NO intentions of going back to Windows.

how can I make vncserver starts on boot?
Realvnc was installed by "apt-get install vnc-server" command.
There in NO start-stop script in /etc/init.d/ (is it ok? ), so I can't use update-rc.d. When placing
vncserver
or
/bin/bash -c "cd /root/ && vncserver :1" 2> /tmp/vncstart &
in rc.local it starts nothing but "vncpasswd //.vnc/passwd" (and YES, there is password in /root/.vnc/passwd)

Ubuntu Security :: Firestarter Fail In Boot Log?

Code:
* Starting the Firestarter firewall [fail] I find this somewhat alarming. I have seen post[URL].ht= firestarter (although have not added it the auto startup list and do not wish to have it start without the root password). What I would like to know is as the computer boots up does it set the iptables to their last setting irrespective of whether firestarter starts or does firestarter need to start to set the iptables and therefore my policies?

One of the screens in the installer( middle of screen) will show what systems are on the grub menu, and one will be marked the default.

If the vista is not there (usually indicated by other), then click the add and select the correct boot partition (sda for vista) and change it's label to Windows Vista.

If other is there, click the edit button and change other to Windows Vista.

Finally, click the check box for the one you want to be the default boot. (you can always change that in the grub.conf later.)

Fedora Installation :: F12 64 Bit - Starts The Boot Process And Then It Hangs

Dec 28, 2009

I'm attempting to install F12 64 bit. I currently have F10 running on this system. I'd like to do a clean install. I'm using the DVD. I boot the computer with the DVD in. I choose the first option (Install or upgrade). It starts the boot process and then it hangs. [URL]

After asking at #Fedora I was given the advice to boot with `intel_iommu=off`. That gets me slightly further in the process. It gets to the point where anaconda is starting. Then all heck breaks loose. It appears the monitor loses the signal from the computer (power light turns red just like if the computer was off). The caps lock and the scroll lock lights on the keyboard blink about once a second. The DVD drive continues to spin for about a minute and then stops. Since I have no display, I have no idea what's going on.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Starts To Boot Then Blank Screen And Nothing?

Apr 18, 2010

I have tried two distros - Mandriva and OpenSuse. Both provide the same results, though Mandriva booted...but still the same problem, after installing blank screen comes up and nothing. Keyboard touch bad, mouse nothing happens. I would prefer openSuse but may have to switch.

Equipment:
Acer 7740 17" laptop
Intel i3-330M Chipset
4Gig DDR3 RAM 1066
Intel Integrated HD Video 128MB

Install Win7 64-Bit no issues, wiped and installed Linux and I cannot get past this blank screen. Installation works, no problem installed packages etc. When coming up on 1st boot, login - boom nothing? Searching the web and I suspect the Intel graphics are the problem but I'm not sure.

I bought this laptop to put Linux on it solely for a personal project of using Linux for a year. I'm an IT professional for 23 years and comfortable with CLI.

Ubuntu :: Windows 7 And Dual Boot Fail, Repartition?

Apr 17, 2010

I already had Windows 7 installed and decided to try out Ubuntu--just to, you know, mess around with stuff. During the partitioning part of the installation, I didn't pay attention as to how much space/volume I would shrink Windows down to, so I just went ahead and pressed forward with the default amount already on there (all of of the space went to Ubuntu, I'm thinking).

Now whenever I turn on my computer, I get a grub menu. On the list is Linux xxxx, Linux etc (blah blah blah), and then Windows 7 loader. It doesn't work, and suggests that I put in the Windows installation disc.

This is what my partitions look like on Gparted:

I have the installation disc. Somewhere.

I'd like to keep the dual boot on Ubuntu and Windows 7 if that's possible. But since Ubuntu is already working, if it's easier to just delete Windows 7, I'd like to know how to do that, too.
