I just installed 2.6.35.12-88.fc14.x86_64 via Software Update and rebooted. When selecting new kernel to boot from, the boot sequence doesn't finish. I am not sure how t o troubleshoot; I am prompted for the PassWord for encrypted /home, but after that, it freezes.

I would like to build a sticky subject about repairing openSUSE boot.This article,once complete (not by me alone) should be made sticky (to have it in front of the forum)- these problems are frequent and disturbing.I know the great work done by please-try-again. But very often we don't need any script (and running a script from rescue mode is difficult) - that said I vote to have the pta scripts included in the rescue system !So I would like to focus on command line fixes.

I have a fresh installation from the demo ISO image of F14 running on an Acer TravelMate 4200. The system is a Dual Boot with win Vista. Windows Vista runs without any problems but when using F14 a kernal crash constantly occurs and it then hard freezes or hangs and the machine needs to be cold booted. There is nothing in particular that I am doing either, the problem happens when the machine is idol or when I am working in various apps.
The F14 system is completely up to date running kernel version 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686. The following error below is from the automatic bug reporting tool and I have reported this using the tool:

Recently, I upgraded 11.1 to 11.2. Everything seemed to go fine. However, for some reason the system boots with the debug kernel - 2.6.31.5-0.1-debug. According to Yast every kernel under the sun seems to be loaded on the system. Grub, however, gives two choices - one for the regular and one for the failsafe system. They both boot to the debug kernel.
How do I get this thing to load into the regular, as opposed to the debug, kernel?

Anyone able to compile kernel 2.6.38.6 on Slackware 13.37 successfully using the config from testing/2.6.38.4? I was able to get .4 and .5 to compile successfully, but with .6 I get the following after running "make modules".

I had fedora-11 installed and the kernel version was 2.6.29 I downloaded new kernel version 2.6.33.2 and did following,
make mrproper
make
make modules_install
make install
when I rebooted and selected 2.6.33.2 from grub entry, fedora logo came and spalshed, after that monitor started blinking and now its not going anywhere, i can see blank screen and nothing else. If I do ctrl+alt+del it shuts down the system normally.
I tried interactive mode also system did fine untill this point "registering binary handler for windows application" after that the same problem came, monitor started blinking and screen is blank., Any pointer regarding this will be helpful , what exactly went wrong? I can provide more info if u need it.
Now I've got debug, default, desktop, ec2, trace, vanilla, xen installed im my system. I usually only boot with desktop, and I was wondering if it is OK to remove other stuff except debug, default, and desktop.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI hadn't done any major updates for about a couple weeks, and then I downloaded a whole bunch - 100+ mb worth. One of these updates was the new kernel 2.6.32-23 (I'm now on the 2.6.32-24 kernel with no improvement). After doing these updates my computer froze at the point where the 5 white dots (10.04) became red upon booting. Since then it generally crashes about every 2nd boot. Also, the times when it does boot, it takes a bit longer to boot (maybe 5-10 secs).
It's no longer snappy like the 10.04 it was just prior to doing the updates.Today it seemed to freeze during login with the prompt still showing once I'd put in my details. When I say it freezes, nothing is happening but I can still do CTRL+ALT+DELETE to reboot the computer, so it's not a full freeze. I've been asked does the old kernel crash it and having tried it once or twice I think it still crashed once. So perhaps it's not the kernel.
I received a laptop that was running XP home that had crashed. MY son was not able to determine if it was hardware or software. So He installed Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Gnome desktop 2.28.1. Often I have to reboot because freezes. Once I get online, the mouse freezes I have tried an external mouse, it does the same. The Laptop model is a Sony model PCG- 6F1L.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm relatively new to Linux, and have broken many more things than I have fixed.. I guess that's the learning process eh? So here's my problem: I've been experimenting with the mount command, and have mounted my local file system (sda1) to a directory (/mnt/test). I was attempting to mount an external hard drive, and sda1 clearly was not the correct drive (I did eventually discover where the external was located, however sda1 remains tied to that directory). I rebooted my system, and now the Grub command prompt loads. When I type "boot" I'm presented with "Error 8: Kernel must be loaded before booting". I'm assuming this is because I mounted my local file system, but I could be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas how I could remedy this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo when i initially boot (both using wubi and a usb stick.) it will start to go and then do the alternative boot option with a 5 second count down. Then if I'm lucky it will get passed that then either a black screen with just a flashing _ on it and it will freeze there. Or it will go to the ubuntu opening with the little dots for initial boot and it freezes there. (the dots don't move more then two and then it really freezes.) My specs are

1.5 TB harddrive

In an attempt to ameliorate some other problems (lm_sensors, and loopback), and based on several forum entries, I decided to update the default f15 kernel (2.6.38.35) using kernel-2.6.39-1.fc16.x86_64.rpm from rawhide. It seemed to install without problems and when I rebooted it seemed to hang just before completing the boot process. The on screen boot messages ended with:

about a dozen similar lines ending with

then it apparently hangs
However, at that point I can log into to a console using Cntl-Alt-f2, so most, if not all, the crucial boot processes seem to have completed. There is an issue with the nVidia driver that I will deal with by modifying /boot/grub/grub.conf to re-enable nouveau, but I am stumped by what is causing the hang up. There is a certain amount of traffic regarding a similar problem with Ubuntu 11.04, but no solution other than it seems to be related to a BIOS bug (NFI)
what sub-system uses the "hci_cmd_timer" and why it might interfere with the boot process? Has anyone else run into a similar problem with f15?
Is there a better way to get an updated kernel in f15? I do want to keep all the Red Hat patches and back ports, so reluctant to build a kernel from scratch from upstream sources at kernel.org (and maybe just a bit apprehensive ;-})
I Installed Fedora 14 about 2 weeks ago and was just settling into using it more or les permanantly and had to turn of the power to do some maintenanace. When I rebooted I got the grub> prompt. I have dualhead configuration - ATI Radeon 7000 with 2 attached VGA monitors.But by booting is one of them switched off:- without kernel param. - nomodeset (added to GRUB), the monitor is switched off just before X start- with nomodeset - is switchet off by X start.In X: xrandr reports only 1 attached monitor (second port is reported as "disconnected") - the same info is in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.I have also try to use my elsewhere working predefined configuration in xorg.conf, but also without effect. The second monitor stays off :On every other OS I have ever tried: Ubuntu 8.04/8.10/9.04, Mandriva 2008/2009.1, Knoppix, SuSE 10.3/11.1, Windows XP, ....I had not this problem.Also - what is wrong in Fedora ? Why do switch the monitor off ? Why reports, that the monitor is disconnected - when it is not true ?

On a fresh install 11.3 gnome I am getting an update freeze on the kernel-desktop-2.6.34.7-0.5.1. This is on the initial software update after first log in on fresh system. It downloads the package and freezes during the update and causes all my other updates to reload. I went to init 3 and ran zypper update and saw that it made it to 91% and then stopped. After that I usually get a corrupted install.

I know that error 15 means "file not found", but not how to figure out which file it is or how to point correctly to it.
I have tried to install the system on partitions on two separate disks, with the same end result. on the original disk I had some trouble getting through grub install, but on the other disk there were no indications of trouble during setup. can this a problem with the MBR on the first drive?
I have one drive connected by PATA, the rest by SATA, will SATA1 be (hd0)[grub] and /dev/sda [linux], is it the PATA drive, or some other means to determine this without examining the make and model of each drive?
i am having quite a problem after upgrading my karmic to an 2.6.33 kernel and trying to do an nfs transfer.
the nfs transfer bugs out in (and then freezes the box totally up, so that only pressing the reboot button on the pc itself helps anymore):

I am using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 (64 bits) in my Asus U30JC laptop (Core i3 M350, intel 4500MHD + nvidia 310M with nvidia Optimus, 4GB RAM). I am content with Lucid and I don't want to upgrade to 10.10 for now. However I read that the new 2.6.36 kernel has some good improvements, such as improving system interactivity while intensive I/O (such as copying large files), and improved energy management for i3/i5 processors (which I hope translates into more battery time, which is a problem of Ubuntu vs Win7 in my laptop).
I discovered I had 2 options: compile the kernel myself, or use the Ubuntu Kernel PPA (maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team). I decided to use the PPA, so I added it to my software sources and installed the generic"linux-lts-backport-natty" kernel (2.6.36-1).
Package installation went fine, and after reboot, I could log in to the desktop no problem. Everything seemed fine, but after a few minutes, the system freezes completely: mouse did not move, none of the indicators moved, even Ctrl + Alt + F1 did not work.Where is the log file where there might be a message related to the freeze? Do you think that the kernel developers would try to fix a bug that probably only affects people running the 2.6.36-1 kernel on a distribution that was not built around it?
I locked the screen, came back, typed the password, screen remained black, though cursor was visible and moving. Nothing I could do to rejuvenate the screen. Had to switch to tty6, sudo shutdown -r now. Then, on reboot obtained kernel selection, it proceeded to displaying kernel messages, but froze on sdb, after 3 secs. I figured it was the usb, so turned off, removed usb cables to external hard drives, but again it froze saying something about firewire mouse, the mouse is also usb. I tried several times, but no matter what kernel I chose, I couldn't get it to boot. So I loaded puppy live cd, but now it can't access some parts of the disk. I was running utorrent and the folder with partially downloaded files can be accessed but there's nothing there (there was), and some folders can't be accessed at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Debian 6.0.1a (64bit) onto a machine that had Debian 5.08. It freezes up almost immediately after loading the kernel. The last line, about 2.6 seconds in, is where it found a SATA drive. (There are two SATA drives). This is a Tyan S2912 with Opteron 2347HE. It seems to be kernel release related. I tried the 5.08 disc again, and it works OK.
With other distros, such as Opensuse and Ubuntu, I have the same problem. The newer releases freeze up almost instantly after loading the kernel. Am I stuck with IDE drives or older kernels? I wanted to try something newer as the fonts in the 5.0.8 release were barely legible. It gave me nauseating headaches within a couple of hours of looking at it. My wife couldn't stand to see it when she came by. I've tried every bios setting change I could think of without a solution.
