OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Loads Debug Kernel Not Default / Change It?
Dec 23, 2009
Recently, I upgraded 11.1 to 11.2. Everything seemed to go fine. However, for some reason the system boots with the debug kernel - 2.6.31.5-0.1-debug. According to Yast every kernel under the sun seems to be loaded on the system. Grub, however, gives two choices - one for the regular and one for the failsafe system. They both boot to the debug kernel.
How do I get this thing to load into the regular, as opposed to the debug, kernel?

Now I've got debug, default, desktop, ec2, trace, vanilla, xen installed im my system. I usually only boot with desktop, and I was wondering if it is OK to remove other stuff except debug, default, and desktop.

After Upgrading to 11.04 32bit, the PAE Kernel loads by default. This would be great except it hangs probably due to graphics not loaded properly.
Regardless I do not want to use PAE Kernel on this dev system I have and luckily it looks like the Generic Kernel of the right version is in a sub-Menu called Older Linux Versions.
I have played with Grub2 before making minor changes but this one is a little beyond me. How can I move the regular Generic Kernel from the sub-Menu and make it my default Grub2 kernel so I boot to it automatically.

If I do try to start a PXE Installation, the PXE Bootsystem loads the kernel, and
I guess it trys to start to load the initrd, but then it froze, i need to reset the computer. On the TFTP Server (aftp) I see that it trys to resend the initrd files and runs into a time out.
Ive the problem on 2 maschines, both with the same Motherboard (ASUS M4N78).
And the PXEinstallation of OpenSuSE 11.3 works fine, without any problems.

differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.

After a fresh install of openSUSE-11.2 (yes, still 11.2) I noticed that the -desktop flavour of kernel is in use. All types of kernels are installed. Is there any easy way to change the kernel in use with yast? I would prefer -pae to get full use of RAM.

To run my other linux distros on another drive I have been manually entering the kernel and initrid info for each distro on the opensuse yast boot loader. For windows 7 it just runs the mbr on the drive windows 7 is on. However I can not get it to do that on the other linux drive. The problem for me is that on every kernel upgrade I have to manually change the info. I would rather have grub on the sdd linux disk take care of it on the upgrades. The drive that holds the other linux versions is sdd. Opensuse is on sdc.

So far I've tried to add a number to 'GRUB_DEFAULT=', but it wouldn't want to boot in anything other than Debian or Windows, same with StartUp-Manager...
I currently have the liquorix kernels installed, but I can't get to use them as the standard Debian kernel is always picked. So is there any way to change this behaviour?

I have Lucid on my laptop. Unfortunately, with the various 2.6.32 kernels neither hibernate nor suspend work, so I've installed and use the last 2.6.31 kernel that came with Karmic. Now, I'd like to set it as default, so that I don't need to actively choose it when I boot. The problem is that I can't find a way to set Grub (version 2.0, or 1.96rc, can't remember) to pick the 2.6.31 kernel and if I try to uninstall the 2.6.32-23 kernel synaptic says that linux-generic and linux-headers will also be uninstalled (not just the parts specific to 2.6.32-23).

I would like to build a sticky subject about repairing openSUSE boot. This article, once complete (not by me alone) should be made sticky (to have it in front of the forum)- these problems are frequent and disturbing.I know the great work done by please-try-again. But very often we don't need any script (and running a script from rescue mode is difficult) - that said I vote to have the pta scripts included in the rescue system !So I would like to focus on command line fixes.

this is the 3rd time in 2 days I have installed this OS and its starting to annoy me. I have a Intel Celeron 2.6Ghz with i845 graphic chipset. I have installed 11.2RC2 and after the installation finishes and I reboot, it automatically asks which resolution I want (VESA/VGA). I have to select VESA since the VGA resolutions are HORRIBLY HUGE. When the boot screen comes, it loads halfway and then comes to a crashing halt. I let it load for 2 hours yesterday and it did NOTHING. After turning the computer off and back on, it comes to a screen to load normally or into failsafe. If I choose normal mode it does the same, if I choose failsafe, it does the same. So basically I have an OS I can't reach. If I could, I would give an xorg.conf on here, but I can't even get anywhere to produce one! When I put the live CD in, it boots perfectly, but I have to install again, only to get a OS that wont boot yet AGAIN.

There seems to be nothing in Preferences or anything, but after the other night, all new windows load in semi-full screen, where the File-Edit-etc menus are there, but the bar at the top isn't, and the taskbar at the bottom is covered by it. Its what happens with certain annoying ads, but now its any window.

So I just switched from KDE to Gnome and after a successful install upon logout I went to the panel that allows one to choose an application (KDE, Gnome, Windowmaker etc).
Gnome worked like a dream.
"I don't remember installing any other applications," I says to myself "Why would they be listed there? I'll try booting into one of them."
At random I chose a new xWindow and hit enter... blackness.
So like any linux user I created /etc/sysconfig/desktop with DESKTOP="GNOME" and DISPLAYMANAGER="GNOME" parameters to force my hand back into Gnome.

There is something what confuses me:
- I thought that the kernel-desktop is the one optimized for desktop usage
- The KDE and Gnome live cds are used by people who want to use their OS as a desktop. I mean I doubt that anyone would install a KDE live cd on a server
So the live cds why have the default kernel installed on them? Just of curiousity, it is not a big deal to remove the default kernel and install the desktop one, but if the desktop kernel gives better experience on the desktop, that one should be used on the live cds too.

I am having a problem with lockups on a new FC12 box (dual core 3 ghz, 4 gb memory, HDPVR, nvidia 8400gs). This happens reliably when replaying MythTV videos, but also randomly at other times using other apps. Usually but not always this is accompanied by a kernel panic (caps lock + scroll lock lights flash on keyboard).
I did a core dump with kdump and it reports:
Thread 1 (<main task>):
Cannot access memory at address 0xffff880028025b70I am in the process of running memtest86+ right now, and it's been through several passes without errors. I know it needs to run more, but given the reliability of this problem with MythTV video playback I am wondering if the problem could be in the video card memory. Any linux (or bootable) tester for video memory? All I am able to find are some things for windoze such as this. Also is there any way to track that address from the core dump back to a physical location?

Anyone able to compile kernel 2.6.38.6 on Slackware 13.37 successfully using the config from testing/2.6.38.4? I was able to get .4 and .5 to compile successfully, but with .6 I get the following after running "make modules".
Code:
WARNING: modpost: Found 11 section mismatch(es).
To see full details build your kernel with:
'make CONFIG_DEBUG_SECTION_MISMATCH=y'
Running "make CONFIG_DEBUG_SECTION_MISMATCH=y 2>&1 > outfile" gives me a bunch of WARNINGS as follows:
Code:

The function build_all_zonelists() references
the function __meminit setup_zone_pageset.clone.56().
This is often because build_all_zonelists lacks a __meminit

I have Opensuse 11.3 with kernel 2.6.34.4-0.1-default i686 and use KDE4-4.5.1 from the new OpenSuse repo. My system sometimes freezes while using Firefox or Chrome and also sometimes playing with Kpatience or browsing images with Gwenview.
My video card is an old Sapphire Radeon working with radeon module and desktop effects are off. The only way to bring up the system is hard resetting. I tried also the desktop kernel with no difference.
