Ubuntu :: Freeze On Booting Since Doing Updates

Aug 2, 2010

I hadn't done any major updates for about a couple weeks, and then I downloaded a whole bunch - 100+ mb worth. One of these updates was the new kernel 2.6.32-23 (I'm now on the 2.6.32-24 kernel with no improvement). After doing these updates my computer froze at the point where the 5 white dots (10.04) became red upon booting. Since then it generally crashes about every 2nd boot. Also, the times when it does boot, it takes a bit longer to boot (maybe 5-10 secs).

It's no longer snappy like the 10.04 it was just prior to doing the updates.Today it seemed to freeze during login with the prompt still showing once I'd put in my details. When I say it freezes, nothing is happening but I can still do CTRL+ALT+DELETE to reboot the computer, so it's not a full freeze. I've been asked does the old kernel crash it and having tried it once or twice I think it still crashed once. So perhaps it's not the kernel.

Ubuntu Installation :: System Seems To Freeze While Booting / Resolve This?

Sep 19, 2010

So when i initially boot (both using wubi and a usb stick.) it will start to go and then do the alternative boot option with a 5 second count down. Then if I'm lucky it will get passed that then either a black screen with just a flashing _ on it and it will freeze there. Or it will go to the ubuntu opening with the little dots for initial boot and it freezes there. (the dots don't move more then two and then it really freezes.) My specs are

Nvidia Geforce GTS 250
1.5 TB harddrive
ASUS P7P55-M LGA 1156 Intel P55 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Ubuntu :: Tracking Updates Without Booting Into The System?

May 6, 2010

Is there a way of tracking updates without booting into the system. I am still on Karmic because of an annoying 'black screen at boot' bug. However i've got Lucid on a test partition waiting when the bug is fixed to upgrade my main system. I do not want to boot into my test system to check if there are any updates but track them online in some way to see when it's worth to boot to upgrade.

Ubuntu :: Nothing Booting - Install Updates Seemed To Hang

Apr 15, 2011

I did a normal Install Updates this morning, but it seemed to hang. Furthermore, after hanging, when I tried to save files it wouldn't let me, saying either the drive was unavailable for writing or write protected or something. Well since I had a Restart Required message, I figured this would be a good time for a restart. It ended up booting me right into BusyBox v1.13.3 after telling me Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init/ and No init found. Try passing init= bootarg followed by a (initramfs) prompt.

I've gathered to mean that my hard drive isn't being mounted; most solutions to this begin with booting from a Live CD. However, I made a Live CD with a USB stick, but when I try to boot from there, the splash screen pops up with the red/white dots moving around, but doesn't continue loading. Pressing an arrow button lets me see the messages "can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found" and "unable to open /dev/sda". If I try going into grub, I'll select one of over a dozen Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-xx-generic options (with and without recovery mode), but again, those end up just kicking me to BusyBox again.

Fedora Hardware :: 14 Not Booting After Installing Latest Updates

Nov 27, 2010

So, it's 2010 and I already though I got rid of coding my own drivers & compiling my own kernel in normal use... After installing latest Fedora 14 updates, my system won't boot anymore into fedora. Just continuous loop no matter if I select previous kernel system won't boot.

Anyone any ideas? I think it might be ATI driver but not 100% sure since I didn't see any D/A related or Kernel updates wasn't upcoming...

Anyways I will figure out this sooner or later but this kind of updates sucks a bit that your system goes suddenly totally unuseable or system won't reboot, sooo , time to move on with an another distro or is Fedora just RedHat's playaground?

Fedora :: Dual Booting - Grub Keeps Adding New Entries On Updates

Aug 21, 2011

I'm kinda new to Linux. My problem is that a new Fedora O/S entry is added onto grub everytime I receive an update on Fedora (I think). Eg:

Fedora 15 15.40.0-4 ...
Fedora 15 15.40.0-3 ...
Fedora 15 15.38.0-0 ...
Windows 7

How do I stop this? Ideally I'll only have two entries, Fedora 15 and Windows 7 where Windows is set as the default primary o/s to boot up. The current method I use is to fiddle around with that grub file and set default to entry 3, which used to be Windows 7 but is now a Fedora (which means Fedora is now set to default boot up).

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Updates Returns To Main Window Without Installing Updates

Mar 24, 2011

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

Ubuntu :: Community Repo Updates / Canonical Does Not Provide Updates For Warsow?

I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:

"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."

So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. Ubuntu :: Automatic Updates - Not JUST Security Updates ?

Mar 25, 2011

So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).

ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.

Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?

Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

Ubuntu :: Booting After Installation (Dual Booting With Vista) - Error: No Such Devide Found

Jun 24, 2010

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.

Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.

When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

Ubuntu :: 10.04 & 9.10 Freeze All The Time?

Jul 4, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu for about 2 months now, I have quite enjoyed using it and so I decided to install it on my brother's PC.I started by trying to install 10.04-64bit, to my surprise it froze during installation. I tried installing it again and this time I was able to complete the installation, however the PC started freezing systematically usually 2-5 minutes after logging in. I decided to install 9.10-64bit, it was frustrating to discover that the same issue was still there (the systematic freezes). I also tried the 32-bit version of 10.04 but it simply didn't solve the problem.

Another thing is that when installing ubuntu from alternate CD it doesn't freeze during installation, which is not true for a regular installation image. After reading around I discovered that booting Ubuntu in rescue mode and then choosing the failsafe option in the menu prevented any freezes from happening. When the PC is frozen neither mouse or keyboard are responsive & the caps light DOESN'T blink. It is certainly not a hardware problem as windows seems to work flawlessly on the machine. Also when I do a hard restart, I sometimes need to reset the BIOS as it gets messed up.hardware:MB: ASUS A8N-VMVIDEO: On-board(Nvidia 6100)Proc: AMD 3000+Ram: 2GB

Ubuntu :: Freeze Ups Are Becoming Unbearable?

Jul 26, 2010

Ive posted here before but have not received any solutions. I have freeze ups in the application software including open office, movie player and firefox to such an extent that it is barely usable. These lock ups occur frequently, consistently, and use can become an extremely aggravating issue. I use the computer for VPN functions and it causes the vpn to disconnect. I dont need to tell you the problems that causes.

The entire computer locks up for periods of 20 seconds or more even where no activity can be performed. I have a computer with 2-2gig processors with 2 gigs of memory.I update my machine whenever the update manager informs me.

I use the computer monitor and can see the cpu usage spike to 100% when the computer is idle, causing lockups. I know Im not the only one who experiences this problem cause I see it all over the net.

My question is this, when are the developers for ubuntu going to address these issues. As it stands now this product is NOT ready for prime time. I dont wish to become a ubuntu guru. Im simply wanting a stable operating system to do basic wordprocessing and other such functions.
