Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded To Mainline Kernel Ppa 2.6.33 - Machine Freeze

i am having quite a problem after upgrading my karmic to an 2.6.33 kernel and trying to do an nfs transfer.
the nfs transfer bugs out in (and then freezes the box totally up, so that only pressing the reboot button on the pc itself helps anymore):

I have just upgrade from 10.04.to 11.04 When I restarted after upgrade installation I got message that I didn't have the hardware to run Unity, then I clicked on ok, now ununtu start, but it is very slow to start and the screen freeze and has different color, but after while it start. I am looking for advice to solve this problem.

I'm looking for some guidance on how to install a mainline kernel. I opened a ticket for a problem I'm having here: [URL]. It was suggested to me that I go here for instructions on how to install the mainline kernels: [URL]. However, when I go there, it explains what to download if you have 32 bit intel (i386) or AMD 64 bit (amd64), but does anyone know what I should download if I need an x86_64 (64bit 10.04 lucid) kernel? Is it i386? Wouldn't that just be 32 bits? I have a Dell e6510 laptop running 64 bit lucid (10.04 - kernel 2.6.32-23) on an Intel Core i5. My laptop stopped working when the 2.6.32-24 kernel was downloaded and installed through the update manager.

I had upgraded to 10.04 but can not use kernel 2.6.32-22.32+, I had to go back to kernel 2.6.31-21. because of the default video driver had change from the one kernel to the other, and I do not know how the correct it. In 2.6.32-22 the font would change and to a smaller size and I can barely view anything because it looks like some two year old puke a box of crayons all over the screen.
Second issue is it does not matter what power-saving mode I am in, in 5 minutes time it with go into suspension. Or right after coming out of hibernate, it will go into suspension indefinitely and no coming out of it and must to a hard boot.

This the second time it has happened after the security upgrade to kernel 2.6.31-19 with a clean shut down it goes into the grub menu and will not boot.

I upgraded to 2.6.35-30.56 last night and now my system's a little flaky. Everything seems to be running ever-so-slightly slower and fullscreen flash is now choppy. The weird thing is the Grub menu upon bootup only shows the latest kernel, but not the previous kernels. Doing an "ls" of the /boot folder only shows this newest kernel. I'd like to revert back to the previous kernel but don't know how.

each time i upgrade my kernel, my installation of lirc fails to work after the upgrade, and i have to re-compile (against new kernel) and install the lirc modules... which i do via something like:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lirc-modules-source
sudo modprobe lirc_imon
after which all is well. this of course is a problem that DKMS should solve for me but it doesn't do it. also i get this message in my messages log:

I have kernel 2.6.26 and I think I need 2.6.27, but update manager says my system is up-to-date. How do I get an upgraded kernel? I have a wireless card but I cannot find anything in the UI to enable it, or connect to my home net. Would Debian come with a connection manager with an oddball name?

I am using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 (64 bits) in my Asus U30JC laptop (Core i3 M350, intel 4500MHD + nvidia 310M with nvidia Optimus, 4GB RAM). I am content with Lucid and I don't want to upgrade to 10.10 for now. However I read that the new 2.6.36 kernel has some good improvements, such as improving system interactivity while intensive I/O (such as copying large files), and improved energy management for i3/i5 processors (which I hope translates into more battery time, which is a problem of Ubuntu vs Win7 in my laptop).
I discovered I had 2 options: compile the kernel myself, or use the Ubuntu Kernel PPA (maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team). I decided to use the PPA, so I added it to my software sources and installed the generic"linux-lts-backport-natty" kernel (2.6.36-1).
Package installation went fine, and after reboot, I could log in to the desktop no problem. Everything seemed fine, but after a few minutes, the system freezes completely: mouse did not move, none of the indicators moved, even Ctrl + Alt + F1 did not work.Where is the log file where there might be a message related to the freeze? Do you think that the kernel developers would try to fix a bug that probably only affects people running the 2.6.36-1 kernel on a distribution that was not built around it?

I'm looking at the mainline kernel PPA, and it seems to be somewhat abandoned. for example, the repository sources don't even contain a karmic section, let alone lucid:[url]
My main concern is, I'd like to rebuild the most recent kernel package with a custom patch on lucid, but without a source repository, I can't do apt-get source, and thus I can't get the .dsc file for the pacakge..how / where could I do that?

I'm trying to install Debian 6.0.1a (64bit) onto a machine that had Debian 5.08. It freezes up almost immediately after loading the kernel. The last line, about 2.6 seconds in, is where it found a SATA drive. (There are two SATA drives). This is a Tyan S2912 with Opteron 2347HE. It seems to be kernel release related. I tried the 5.08 disc again, and it works OK.
With other distros, such as Opensuse and Ubuntu, I have the same problem. The newer releases freeze up almost instantly after loading the kernel. Am I stuck with IDE drives or older kernels? I wanted to try something newer as the fonts in the 5.0.8 release were barely legible. It gave me nauseating headaches within a couple of hours of looking at it. My wife couldn't stand to see it when she came by. I've tried every bios setting change I could think of without a solution.

I just upgraded the kernel from 2.6.32-24 to 2.6.32-25. When it was finished it logged me out of XFCE without warning (is that normal)? Now if I try to log in to XFCE the screen goes blank and I just get returned to the login screen. I can log in to GNOME however. I get the same problem if I boot into -24 or -25.

I upgraded a PC from 10.04.1 to 10.10 and it will not boot into the new kernel. Because the system started as Ubuntu 7.10, it is using Grub 1.
It gets to the point where it displays "Starting up..." then displays a flashing cursor at the upper left of the screen, it does nothing further.
Yet it will boot into the previous kernel from the 10.04.1 installation, but X will crash if I login using the XFCE desktop, yet it will log into LXDE without a problem.
Is this a known issue (not booting up with new kernel)?
The CPU is an AMD Athlon 32-bit which does have CMOV (per cat /proc/cpuinfo). I have also manually run various apt-get commands to upgrade/update everything, no change resulted.

I recently upgraded my Debian kernel to 2.6.35 via backports and reinstalled my graphic driver. But when I try to use certain apps, it just sits there in the taskbar trying to load for a couple minutes, then automatically closes itself. Specifically I've noticed the nvidia x-server menu and open office doing this, while they both worked fine before I upgraded the kernel. some apps will do this, while others will work fine.

When I first did my install of Slackware 13.37, I installed the 2.6.38.4 kernel from /testing.
I did a "upgradepkg testing/kernel*.t?z"
Well just now I realized that there was a kernel-headers package in /testing, and I've heard that you should only use the kernel headers that glibc was compiled with.
So did I make a mistake installing the kernel-headers from /testing?
And if I revert back to the stock kernel-headers package, will I have to recompile all the programs I've compiled with the 2.6.38.4 headers?

For portability reasons; I am building a standalone kickstart ISO; based of Cent5.2. I am to the point where I can load my ks file (linux ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg), it reads it fine; and performs the install as I want.
Where I am having a problem; is a good way to have the install use upgraded RPM's, not the base; specifically a kernel with a few needed tweaks in it; which is packaged in an rpm.
I attempted to place my kernel rpm's into the CentOS directory and rerun creatrepo; but I simply managed to corrupt the base repo on the install media.

I locked the screen, came back, typed the password, screen remained black, though cursor was visible and moving. Nothing I could do to rejuvenate the screen. Had to switch to tty6, sudo shutdown -r now. Then, on reboot obtained kernel selection, it proceeded to displaying kernel messages, but froze on sdb, after 3 secs. I figured it was the usb, so turned off, removed usb cables to external hard drives, but again it froze saying something about firewire mouse, the mouse is also usb. I tried several times, but no matter what kernel I chose, I couldn't get it to boot. So I loaded puppy live cd, but now it can't access some parts of the disk. I was running utorrent and the folder with partially downloaded files can be accessed but there's nothing there (there was), and some folders can't be accessed at all.

I just installed 2.6.35.12-88.fc14.x86_64 via Software Update and rebooted. When selecting new kernel to boot from, the boot sequence doesn't finish. I am not sure how t o troubleshoot; I am prompted for the PassWord for encrypted /home, but after that, it freezes.

I have a fresh installation from the demo ISO image of F14 running on an Acer TravelMate 4200. The system is a Dual Boot with win Vista. Windows Vista runs without any problems but when using F14 a kernal crash constantly occurs and it then hard freezes or hangs and the machine needs to be cold booted. There is nothing in particular that I am doing either, the problem happens when the machine is idol or when I am working in various apps.
The F14 system is completely up to date running kernel version 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686. The following error below is from the automatic bug reporting tool and I have reported this using the tool:

On a fresh install 11.3 gnome I am getting an update freeze on the kernel-desktop-2.6.34.7-0.5.1. This is on the initial software update after first log in on fresh system. It downloads the package and freezes during the update and causes all my other updates to reload. I went to init 3 and ran zypper update and saw that it made it to 91% and then stopped. After that I usually get a corrupted install.

I am having a problem with lockups on a new FC12 box (dual core 3 ghz, 4 gb memory,nvidia 8400gs). This happens reliably when replaying MythTV videos, but also randomly at other times using other apps (I suspect also boot but I can't be sure; it just occasionally stalls part way through the boot display).
Usually but not always this is accompanied by a kernel panic (caps lock + scroll lock lights flash on keyboard).
I did a core dump with kdump and it reports: Thread 1 (<main task>): Cannot access memory at address 0xffff880028025b70I am in the process of running memtest86+ right now. It's been through several passes without errors. I'm going to let it run some more, but if that is dependable it's looking like the RAM sticks are not the problem.

I know that error 15 means "file not found", but not how to figure out which file it is or how to point correctly to it.
I have tried to install the system on partitions on two separate disks, with the same end result. on the original disk I had some trouble getting through grub install, but on the other disk there were no indications of trouble during setup. can this a problem with the MBR on the first drive?
I have one drive connected by PATA, the rest by SATA, will SATA1 be (hd0)[grub] and /dev/sda [linux], is it the PATA drive, or some other means to determine this without examining the make and model of each drive?
