Fedora Installation :: Kernel-2.6.29.1 Is Not Booting Over 14?
Feb 15, 2011
i have installed kernel 2.6.29.1 on fedora14. when i tried to boot the kernel 2.6.29.1 it does some USB identification, and then it got hanged and displays nothing... logs are [1.955941]usb3-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [2.054770]input: ImPS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input1
I downloaded the minimal boot image and installation CDs for F12 i386. On booting either I get the following messages: Code: This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: cmov Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU Looks to me like the installation media for i386 doesn't have an i386 kernel! I'm trying to install to an i586 CPU.
Since upgrading to 10.10, I've been unable to boot the 2.6.35 kernels, either -22 or -23. I've been booting with the 2.6.32-25 instead, but I would like to get this resolved.
I can provide more detailed info at request; the output of lshw, if that'll be useful, or details of GRUB.
I had fedora-11 installed and the kernel version was 2.6.29 I downloaded new kernel version 2.6.33.2 and did following,
make mrproper make make modules_install make install
when I rebooted and selected 2.6.33.2 from grub entry, fedora logo came and spalshed, after that monitor started blinking and now its not going anywhere, i can see blank screen and nothing else. If I do ctrl+alt+del it shuts down the system normally.
I tried interactive mode also system did fine untill this point "registering binary handler for windows application" after that the same problem came, monitor started blinking and screen is blank., Any pointer regarding this will be helpful , what exactly went wrong? I can provide more info if u need it.
I recently got the Message, that i should do a partial System Upgrade. It included an update to Kernel 2.6.34. Since this update, i cannot boot with this kernel:
Code: Mounting none on /dev/ failed...
i can still boot with older kernels, but many drivers including wifi and graphics drivers dont work there anymore.
I upgraded my F13 kernel from 2.6.33 to 2.6.34. But, the newer kernel isn't booting. It starts the booting process and then goes idle. how shall I troubleshoot?
I just installed 2.6.35.12-88.fc14.x86_64 via Software Update and rebooted. When selecting new kernel to boot from, the boot sequence doesn't finish. I am not sure how t o troubleshoot; I am prompted for the PassWord for encrypted /home, but after that, it freezes.
I'm relatively new to Linux, and have broken many more things than I have fixed.. I guess that's the learning process eh? So here's my problem: I've been experimenting with the mount command, and have mounted my local file system (sda1) to a directory (/mnt/test). I was attempting to mount an external hard drive, and sda1 clearly was not the correct drive (I did eventually discover where the external was located, however sda1 remains tied to that directory). I rebooted my system, and now the Grub command prompt loads. When I type "boot" I'm presented with "Error 8: Kernel must be loaded before booting". I'm assuming this is because I mounted my local file system, but I could be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas how I could remedy this?
this-Am getting tis error after installing ubuntu server 8.10 in sun virtual box and trying to boot for the first time.."This kernel requires following features not present on the cpu pae unable to boot please use the appropriate kernel for your cpu." currently am using ubuntu desktop edition 9.04. on d top of it i installed virtual ubuntu server8.10
Grub use to open an old kernel I tried to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to open the one I wanted. The edit gets saved but it still opens in the wrong kernel. i.e when edit menu.lst it has no effect. I have tried running sudo grub-update. I've read piles of forum entries to no avail. I am running Jaunty.
In an attempt to ameliorate some other problems (lm_sensors, and loopback), and based on several forum entries, I decided to update the default f15 kernel (2.6.38.35) using kernel-2.6.39-1.fc16.x86_64.rpm from rawhide. It seemed to install without problems and when I rebooted it seemed to hang just before completing the boot process. The on screen boot messages ended with:
Started Display Manager Started LSB: daemon for libvirt ........ Starting LSB: suspend/resume libvirt guests on shutdown/boot [ 12 ...... about a dozen similar lines ending with [25.030991 hci_cmd_timer: hci0 command tx timeout then it apparently hangs
However, at that point I can log into to a console using Cntl-Alt-f2, so most, if not all, the crucial boot processes seem to have completed. There is an issue with the nVidia driver that I will deal with by modifying /boot/grub/grub.conf to re-enable nouveau, but I am stumped by what is causing the hang up. There is a certain amount of traffic regarding a similar problem with Ubuntu 11.04, but no solution other than it seems to be related to a BIOS bug (NFI)
what sub-system uses the "hci_cmd_timer" and why it might interfere with the boot process? Has anyone else run into a similar problem with f15?
Is there a better way to get an updated kernel in f15? I do want to keep all the Red Hat patches and back ports, so reluctant to build a kernel from scratch from upstream sources at kernel.org (and maybe just a bit apprehensive ;-})
I Installed Fedora 14 about 2 weeks ago and was just settling into using it more or les permanantly and had to turn of the power to do some maintenanace. When I rebooted I got the grub> prompt. As I have already shut down and rebooted several times over the last couple of weeks, I could not se why this happened, so I rebooted and stiull got the same problem. Things I have tried:

I am currently using a 64 bit ASUS P75P55-M motherboard.
I have dualhead configuration - ATI Radeon 7000 with 2 attached VGA monitors. But by booting is one of them switched off:- without kernel param. - nomodeset (added to GRUB), the monitor is switched off just before X start- with nomodeset - is switchet off by X start. In X: xrandr reports only 1 attached monitor (second port is reported as "disconnected") - the same info is in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.I have also try to use my elsewhere working predefined configuration in xorg.conf, but also without effect. The second monitor stays off :On every other OS I have ever tried: Ubuntu 8.04/8.10/9.04, Mandriva 2008/2009.1, Knoppix, SuSE 10.3/11.1, Windows XP, ....I had not this problem. Also - what is wrong in Fedora ? Why do switch the monitor off ? Why reports, that the monitor is disconnected - when it is not true ?
I have installed the fedora 14, but there is no kernel source tree.I read the doc "building a custom kernel".But I don't want to rebuild a new kernel.I just want to install the source tree of current kernel.Could someone tell me the way?
I installed Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 Standard Edition on a HP dc5800 PC with a SATA drive. To install the system I use the boot option: Linux pci=nommconf After the installation is done The system is hangs while uncompressing the kernel. the boot loader is GNU GRUB:

there is an issue with the way the Linux Kernel addresses memory by default and the graphic drivers for my Asus G1Sn. I have a patch that I had compiled against a custom kernel for 2.6.27.xx how ever it does not work with the latest kernel in Fedora 11. It is beyond me to rewrite the patch to work with a different kernel.
I use a pretty fresh installed RHEL 5.4, which should be very similar to Fedora. After the basic installation I installed xen and xen-kernel via yum with no errors. I can select the xen-kernel at boot time. But after booting the normal kernel shows up.
I just installed fedora 10 using the GUI install, and when I try to boot, it gets me to the grub command line
grub>
when i enter 'boot', it gives me grub error 8: kernel must be loaded before booting. Not sure how to fix this.
Also, I used to have fedora 9, and i had an option to boot fedora or 'other', which is windows. How do I go about setting up something similar in this case?
EDIT:
Also, when I type root, it tells me that the partition (hd2,0) (i assume the one i installed FC10: 3rd hdd, first partition) is an unspecified file system ...
I think something happened to grub when it removed my old partition with FC9...
I have just installed Fedora 8 off a magazine dvd I had but it won't boot...What I have done is I got Easeus' Partition Manager 3.0 Home Edition and created a 25 GB partition, then i rebooted the system with the Fedora 8 disk in to install it whic it did, no errors, (but I did say not to install the boot loader because i have Windows 2000 installed aswell) then after it has installed it boots straight to windows. It doesn't ask me to boot to Fedora, it goes straight to windows.I am totally stumped as why I can' boot to Fedora.
i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version. I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
I want to install fedora 10 on my PC. But after booting from DVD a screen comes which tells me to:
" - to install or upgrade in graphical mode, press the <ENTER> key - use the function key listed below for more information [F1-Main] [F2-Options] [F3-General] [F4-Kernel] [F5-Rescue]"
when I press "Enter" nothing happens, even the function keys does not work & after some time PC restarts. The DVD is ok I have checked it in my friends PC, it works on his PC very well. My PC configuration is:
Precessor : Core 2 Duo 2.20 GHz Ram : 1 GB Hard Disk : SATA 160 GB maxtor OS : Windows XP service pack 2 BIOS Version/Date:Intel Corp. NL94510J.86A.0010.2007.0523.1650, 5/23/2007
I have tried to install fedora 10 in "virtual box 2.1.4" but the result is same.
I installed Fedora 11 in VirtualBox, and the initial installation went fine. I then did a system update, and the video driver is broken. When I enter GDM, I have a black and blue screen, with the Fedora logo replicated across the screen.
I don't enter the Grub screen when I boot, and I wonder if there's another way to boot into runlevel 3. At one point, I'm prompted to type "I" to enter interactive mode, but doing this repeatedly still boots me into the GUI.
how I should edit the boot loader so that both WinXP & Fedora are bootable selection options on the boot splash screen. My apologies if this has been asked before. My present grub.cof reads as follows but does not provide me with an XP boot option.
# grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file [dalpets@localhost ~]$ su
I have a 4GB USB Flash Drive that I would like to install Fedora 14 Live on.
Process:
Downloaded the Fedora 14 i686 Live ISO file Used the Fedora LiveUSB Creator on my USB with the Fedora 14 ISO
I changed my BIOS on my Dell Inspiron E1505 to boot from a USB, then CD-DVD ROM, then Internal HDD Had USB inserted, then turned on computer.
Received the following message:
And then it sticks. I've found two other internet sites that have had this problem. One is in chinese, the other is in french. I know french, but the 'solution' was not clear.
This is my first attempt at using Fedora (the only other distro i've used is Ubuntu), and I'm having trouble booting from a USB device created using the LiveUSB Creator utility, containing the Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop disc image. After selecting my USB device from the startup menu, I see a black screen with the following information:
Code:
With a blinking cursor. I cannot enter any input, but my keyboard has lights on as normal, so I assume it's working.
The following is a list of my hardware:
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo E6750 Motherboard: MSI nForce 650i P6N SLI-FI Graphics: nVidia GeForce GT 240 HDD: Western Digital Raptor 150 GB USB: Memorex Mini TravelDrive 2GB
I am trying to create a dual-boot system, and currently have Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit installed.
I have now Bt4 on live envir. and i am about to make space for Bt4 using Gparted from Bt ( live env) 'resize & move' at Free space preceding & Free space following on a 500Gb drive,I gave it 101 MiB. I see it says MiB instead of Gb .. but i am confused as to before & after does the before mean actual space fedora will have or is it Mb space for the bootloader a 100Mb or is that 10Gb ?
