Red Hat / Fedora :: Error 8: Kernel Must Be Loaded Before Booting

Nov 16, 2010

I'm relatively new to Linux, and have broken many more things than I have fixed.. I guess that's the learning process eh? So here's my problem: I've been experimenting with the mount command, and have mounted my local file system (sda1) to a directory (/mnt/test). I was attempting to mount an external hard drive, and sda1 clearly was not the correct drive (I did eventually discover where the external was located, however sda1 remains tied to that directory). I rebooted my system, and now the Grub command prompt loads. When I type "boot" I'm presented with "Error 8: Kernel must be loaded before booting". I'm assuming this is because I mounted my local file system, but I could be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas how I could remedy this?

Fedora :: "kernel Must Be Loaded Before Booting" Error

Jan 23, 2009

I just installed fedora 10 using the GUI install, and when I try to boot, it gets me to the grub command line

grub>

when i enter 'boot', it gives me grub error 8: kernel must be loaded before booting. Not sure how to fix this.

Also, I used to have fedora 9, and i had an option to boot fedora or 'other', which is windows. How do I go about setting up something similar in this case?

EDIT:

Also, when I type root, it tells me that the partition (hd2,0) (i assume the one i installed FC10: 3rd hdd, first partition) is an unspecified file system ...

I think something happened to grub when it removed my old partition with FC9...

Ubuntu Installation :: Error: No Loaded Kernel

Apr 26, 2010

I've been looking forward to making the switch to Ubuntu for a while, but ever since I did, the road's been pockmarked with errors and hassles. That's, primarily, because I don't know what the hell I'm doing. Let me explain how I installed Ubuntu: All I did to install Ubuntu was download the file from the website and run the program. I didn't burn anything onto a CD or USB; I just clicked on the .exe file and let it run from there. Everything worked great - all I had to do was boot my laptop and choose from either Windows 7 or Ubuntu. Now, I had no idea how to watch videos, so I started to install a lot of stuff from the Synaptic Download Manager. Now, I don't know all of what I downloaded, but it was mainly games. The next thing I know, I get this page when I choose Ubuntu:

Code:

GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4
[minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completion. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device/file completions.]
sh:grub> _

So I hit TAB and try the easiest command on the list, BOOT. This is what I get when I try boot:

Code:

error: no loaded kernel

So I don't know what I did wrong.

OpenSUSE Install :: Starting Xserver After Upgrade / Error Message That Current Kernel Can Not Be Loaded?

May 21, 2011

I was about to do upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4.I was following the guide I found in opensuse's website. I was to the point where I had to disable all 11.3 repositories and add the 11.4 at that point I forgot to change my nvidia repository ( I have a g210m graphic card).

thus after the upgrade the X could not start at all. I think this was because Yast could not find the nvidia driver.

Using text mode YaSt2 I added the nvidia driver but after restart I can not see and X running. I receive an error message that the current kernel can not be loaded!!!

I also checked in command line if there is something like Sax2.. but I couldnot find anything.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Nvidia Driver Seems To Hang Kernel Before Its Even Loaded?

Nov 18, 2010

I used to have FC11 installed with the nvidia supplied binary driver. Worked fine, very stable. Trying FC12 and FC13 live CDs caused a hang, so I stuck with FC11. FC14 live CD did boot so I backed up my own files and did a clean FC14 install. Upgraded to get kernel 2.6.35.6-48, installed the nvidia driver from RPMFusion (260.19.21) and had a working system! Now, after a cold boot, the kernel always hangs during boot. Tried a number of kernel boot option (apci=off, noapic and a few others too). The hang is not always at the same place. The earliest it has hung is after:Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint

Sometimes its a few lines later at:NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 260.19.12 ...(which would seem to imply that the hang can even occur a step or two before the actual driver is loaded!)

Sometimes it keeps going for a few more seconds and randomly hangs during some other driver load.

Without a specific nvidia driver the system always boots ok, so I'm pretty sure its the nvidia driver but I just can't seem to get a handle on this in a reproducible way. Sometimes, when I have make some other change, it will boot and work ok, but a reboot locks it up again (for example, in case it was SELinux, I disabled it and on the next reboot it booted and worked ok. Then, next boot, it wasn't working again). When I make changes, I reboot using the previous kernel, make the changes and reboot, with an occasional success. Once I start rebooting using the latest kernel, it always hangs.

I'd love to get a solution to this, but even some advice on debugging this would be appreciated!

I'm using 8600GT, 256Mb, PCIe card in a MA69VM motherboard with 3Gb of RAM.

I ran the update through yum (replicated results twice) and whenever I boot to the new kernel it either freezes on the F logo or screen goes black right after f logo. No commands work whatsoever (tried em all). I can boot to an older kernel (2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64). the ones that fail are: 2.6.33.6-147.fc13.x86_64 and 2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13.x86_64.

General :: ACPI Error & Kernel Panic On Boot - Fedora 12

Jan 7, 2010

I just installed Fedora 12. When I boot, only the following three lines are printed: pnp 00:09: can't evaluate _CRS: 12298 ACPI: Expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0 Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) I first installed Fedora using a RAID 1 setup that mirrored each partition, so I thought the problem was coming from GRUB and confusion from what to boot off of. However, I reinstalled Fedora using a simple single drive setup (left the second drive without any partition), and the same error was returned. Is this an ACPI issue with this particular motherboard/BIOS? Any ideas for how I can fix this?

General :: Booting Into Kernel - Error 13: Invalid Or Unsupported Executable Format

Sep 13, 2010

I've been playing around with trying to assemble a bare-bones Linux system on a disk.img file through a loop device. I compiled the most recent stable kernel and then copied it onto the root partition in the image. When I try to boot up into the image using qemu, grub gives me this:

Code:
Booting 'tiny'
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinux
Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format

Press any key to continue... I am confused because I compiled the kernel with 'make bzImage', and the architecture hasn't changed (qemu on the same machine used to build the kernel). So it should be bzImage format. Is that what this Error 13 means, or could it means something else is wrong...?

Ubuntu Networking :: R6040 On PCM-9343 Driver Not Loaded During Booting

May 29, 2011

I'm trying to get Ubuntu 10.04 running on a PCM-9343 board from Advantech. To do so I followed the instructions in this file from DM&P [URL] I installed a text-only Ubuntu using the alternate installer on a CF card that was connected to my PC. After reboot I downloaded the given kernel and updated the installation on the card, as said in the instructions. Inserting the card into the PCM-9343 gives a working Ubuntu Installation. So far so good.

The only thing not working is networking. The ethernet adapter is not loaded on boot, neither can I up it after logging in using "ifup -a". I found out, that the driver was not loaded during booting, i.e. the module r6040 didn't show up on "lsmod". The module is included in the modified kernel, that I downloaded from the producer's page. So I added it to /etc/modules and rebooted. Now it's loaded, but still no eth0. Ifup -a gives the following messages:
