OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Kernel-desktop Update Freeze?
Dec 5, 2010On a fresh install 11.3 gnome I am getting an update freeze on the kernel-desktop-2.6.34.7-0.5.1. This is on the initial software update after first log in on fresh system. It downloads the package and freezes during the update and causes all my other updates to reload. I went to init 3 and ran zypper update and saw that it made it to 91% and then stopped. After that I usually get a corrupted install.

Mar 24, 2010I am experiencing the "slow internet" problem (mentioned multiple times in these forums) but it started exactly when I ran an online update, which switched my boot image from vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.1 to vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.2. Perhaps a setting somewhere got overridden? When the update occurred, grub couldn't find the OS because it had the wrong version #, and I manually edited it (via a livedisk) and that fixed it; it also switched my vga resolution in the grub conf. OpenSUSE is *acting* like ipv6 is enabled again, but ifconfig doesn't report that, and my MTU is close to 1500.

Jan 28, 2011Running Ubuntu 10.4 32bit (only) on my system with ati graphics card. I just ran a software update, and I believe a new kernel was installed. When I rebooted, I saw the "Ubuntu" loading screen, but then the system froze up and the screen went completely blank. Thinking it was a graphics issue, I tried to press escape to get into the grub bootloader. However, when I pressed escape at the proper time, the system just rebooted.
Thinking that grub was broken, I used a live cd to purge grub from my system and re-install it. When I rebooted, I got the same initial problem: I get the "Ubuntu" loading screen, but then the screen goes black and the system appears to be frozen. Again, if I press escape to try the grub bootloader, the system just reboots.

Before the update I could tether.Same machine dual boots to Win7-64bit and can tether just fine.I re-installed the libimobile packages, but my linux no longer recognizes the iphone as a network device.t DOES pop-up some boxes asking if I want to play the media, or view the photos on the iPhone - so that part is working

Jul 19, 2010I've just installed OpenSuse 11.3 on my two Sony Vaio VPCF11Z1E machines (which have a Geforce GT 330M graphics card).Both machines appear to setup correctly and behave normally, but at seemingly random intervals (of the order of magnitude of 15-30 minutes) the whole system locks up for no readily apparent reason. I can still move the mouse pointer around the screen, but I cannot click on anything, and the whole keyboard is unresponsive (including any reasonable ctrl-alt-xxx which might normally help). The only way to get out of this seems to be to press and hold the power button to shut the whole machine off (which is not ideal!)

I get absolutely no response from the keyboard, although I do have the mouse working. However the end result is ALWAYS a cold boot
I am running SUSE on a spare machine as follows:
DELL Optiplex GX270 standard machine with integrated peripheral devices etc. Chipsets are all up to date and the hard drive is performing without fault. 1.25 Gb Ram
OpenSUSE Network :: Installation In Xen Freeze Whole Computer From NFS?
Jun 21, 2010I have host server for xen (11.2 x86_64) and another server holding linux images. Those images are accesible via NFS.
When I am installing new machine on my xen host and using images on nfs share; whole host-machine freeze during installation (random time, random packages, but it freeze everytime). I had to hard rebooted. Machine do not respond to ping. Performing same installaltion from local copy of same image (copy is done through NFS !) is always vithout any problem.
Xen host machine is MSI Wind and it have gb ethernet. I had some problem with it on Windows XP (disconecting) but on Windows Vista it was ok. On Linux I also did not encounter any problem so far.
Strange thing is that after hang there is no error in /var/log/messages. I would like to investigate what`s going on, what cause this freeze.
I am thing about sysrq messages, but this machine do not have any com port.

OpenSUSE Network :: Complete Freeze When Downloading Torrents?
Apr 16, 2011I'm experiencing complete system freezes when dowloading torrents with more than 800kb/sec (I think this is the limit, I've capped it at 750, and it seems to be running ok now). I had this same problem in Ubuntu aswell. But not in Win 7. The problem also appeared in ubuntu when streaming video through VLC with more than 800kbps.
As my connection gives me quite alot higher download speeds this kind of annoys me, and me being quite new to this whole Linux thing, don't really know what to do. I had a dialogue with someone at Ubuntuforums regarding this, but we pretty much got nowhere.
I have an ASUS 1201N laptop, with ION chipset.

Jul 23, 2011i've been able to narrow down a freezing issue on my laptop, down to NetworkManager when i have a cifs share mounted in fstab.removing the cifs mount, or using 'ifup' method appears to fix the issue.the problem is when my laptop resumes from sleep, and when using NetworkManager with cifs share, then i get a 20second freeze when using the launcher while the network sorts itself out. this happens on either wifi or wired connections. this freeze only occurs when using the Launcher for the first time after resume. if i dont use the launcher then everything is fine untill i do (ie: i have network access and desktop shortcuts work fine)

Aug 18, 2010I just switched to opensuse from fedora. So far, I like it a lot (KDE FTW). However, I am having a couple issues concerning hibernation and restarting.Whenever I merely close my computer but don't shut it off, I am forced to reboot. When I open the computer after closing it, everything stays black and nothing seems to work aside from a restart (no good, I know).When I restart, network management is disabled and thus I am prevented from accessing wireless. The only solution I have found is to hibernate, which for some reason fixes the problem. A restart however does nothing. So I guess I have two questions:1) Why can't I close my computer without turning it off?2) Is there a more permanent solution aside from merely hibernating after a crash that will fix network manager

Jun 29, 2011After a bit of work I got 3d acceleration (direct rendering) working on my system. Now, whenever I use intensive graphics, (certain screen savers, Google Earth overlay animations) all performs fine for a while (1-2 minutes) and then causes a full system freeze. Only solution at that point is a hard power reboot. I don't know where to look for a solution, since I can not check any diagnostic files when the system is frozen.
System:
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
ATI FireGL V3100 graphics Card
OpenSuse 11.4 with radeon driver.

Feb 6, 2010i upgraded my kernel to the latest version that being linux-image-2.6.31-19 and now when i start my linux box i get the grub shell. this problem happend once before but i only had to run the command: sudo update-grub2 and everything turned back normal. now even though i run the command everytime i restart my linux i get the grub shell.

Feb 7, 2010Firstly my gdesklets have gone, and if I try to run gdesklets then I get a blank window in the top left corner, followed by another blank window in the centre which disappears, then the first one fades to gray.
Secondly, clicking the 'running man' to exit just closes both gnome panels.
Ubuntu 8.04 (2.6.24-25)I know 8.04 is pretty old now, and I should probably start over, but it was all fine until this latest update.
CentOS 5 :: KVM Guest Performance After Kernel/system Update?
Mar 30, 2011Last I upgraded one of our cent 5 boxes which is running kvm with a mix of centos and windows VMs.After the update performance just tanked on the XP guest, but the others (including other windows VMs) are just fine.I checked with our good friend google and didn't really get any help there.We're hoping to NOT have to rebuild the XP guest, so I thought I'd check in here first.

Sep 4, 2010I have a problem with the kernel update to 2.6.34.6. Up until 2.6.33.x my system boots fine, but with this update the boot stops at the moment that the mouse cursor should become visible. To resolve the problem, I've gone back to 2.6.33.x and removed the 2.6.34 kernel but I wonder what happens with the next kernel update.
Anyone else having this problem?

Aug 15, 2010Today when I logged into my fileserver it told me there were 20 updates available. I went ahead and installed them, one was a new kernel. After reboot, I cannot see that machine when I browse the network. It still has the same static IP and I can still map to the shared drives, so Samba is working. When I browse the network from Windows or my WDTV Live media play it no longer shows the server by name. The smb.conf file is still intact and I restarted Samba. Not really sure where to start troubleshooting why I can't browse to it.

But after automatic update to 2.6.35-23 updater install just linux-image-2.6.35-23-generic without headers. In result kernel modules of nVidia driver not compiled and next boot X server can not start.
Now I can install 2.6.35-24 image and headers by hands, but how to explain updater not forget to update headers next time and why this problem occurs?

Fedora Hardware :: No Network In Acer Aspire One D250 After Kernel Update / Get That?
Mar 28, 2010I just installed Fedora 12 x86 in an Acer Aspire One D250. Everything ran smoothly and was detected upon install but unfortunately after all updates were applied to it I ended with a device with no network connection (not even Ethernet).
This appears to be kernel-related because the old kernel (stock) works as expected. The problematic kernel version is (2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686).
Is there any known workaround for this? Or am I condemned to run this older kernel until the other one gets fixed?
Another question, in the event a new kernel comes out I'd like to keep to older one as a back up, how can I arrange that?

Jun 26, 2011I've been getting some system freezes when running blender on a new system (using about 1/2 my 8GB memory, AMD Phenom II x6 1090T+default AMD CPU cooler, ECS A880LM-M motherboard, Corsair 1333 DDR3, 2x4GB). PS voltages (measured off MOLEX plug) 12.05VDC and 5.2VDC. Tried BIOS resetting defaults. I'm trying to narrow down the problem with the MEMTEST v4.0. It gets through all tests fine until test #7 (block move) and starts throwing a ton of errors, and about 2/3 of the way through that test it says "unexpected interrupt, halting CPU0." All the listings say "28dbbd11" (this varies from run to run, except the 'Stack:' listing seems to count up from that number). I've tried unplugging one memory module and then swapping them as well as their positions. Same result always: block moves throw errors, followed by halting CPU0. To me this suggests the motherboard or the Phenom II. But I don't know how to test these. Can someone give the next step in diagnosis? I did find this link, but I'm not sure how it differentiates between my error and something specific to either the MOBO or CPU:
