Fedora Servers :: Vncserver Not Starting On Boot
May 21, 2009
I am currently using FC10 on a Dell 4600 with 2GB of ram. I love Linux as it is the most stable OS around. My end goal is to have the machine boot and start the vncserver automatically, eventually using an ssh tunnel to make it secure. My main problem is the vncserver is not starting on boot, I must login as a user then it works great. the error I get is
[Code]....
Basically what happens is the vncserver fails on boot however, if I login to the Fedora box I am able to connect and I get the GDM login screen. I have read many, many posts but have not been able to get over the boot issue. I really want to make this a headless box I can put in another room so I have more room for my musical gear.

I'm running a server that boots into runlevel 3. I can ssh into it but I only get a blank screen when I try to connect to the vncserver that's running on it. Is it possible to connect to a vncserver that's running on runlevel 3 or does X have to be running for the vnc to work?

Just upgraded to F15 and I cannot seem to get the sendmail service starting at boot time.It starts and works just fine by hand after boot, so there's nothing wrong with the sendmail
configuration itself."runlevel" shows a current run level of 5 and "chkconfig" shows sendmail on for run level 5.All the other mail service (mailman, clamd, etc.) start fine.Doing "service sendmail start" after boot gets everything up and running just fine, but itsure would be nice to have it run at boot like it used to

configured /etc/sysconfig/vncserver, used vncpasswd as the user im trying to log in as to set passwd, disabled firewalls, set chkconfig --add vncserver but still whenever i try to connect to the vnc server I get "unable to connect to host: Connection refused (10061)". If I run the "vncserver" command as my normal user, I can connect fine then. This really wearing on me, any help is greatly appreciated. It is weird if I try to stop vncserver it says [ok] and then if I try to stop again it says [Failed] but if I check the status of vncserver it says Xvnc is running..

I run into a problem when trying to use my XP as VNCViewer and my Fedora 10 as VNCServer I installed VNC server and client in both my XP and Fedora. If I am using Fedora VncViewer through XP, it runs with no problem. But not the otherway around? (XP vncviewer to FC) Yes..... I know this happens a lot and I can google it, but I googled it with no luck! IP address for my Fedora is 10.0.10.148
I run VncServer in Fedora by typing 'vncserver' or 'vncserver :1', and comes out with the display screen number (1) and the log file. I checked the log file and there are a few errors. (see attached) I run VncViewer from XP, type in 10.0.10.148:1 and still got "Connection refused (10061)' (please see attached again). I attached the startup file as well for you to see. Port 5900 TCP and UDP are open, I can ping from XP to Fedora, I can telnet, but I can't VNC.

How would I make sure cron is running every time my server is turned on? I want to make cron jobs, but I need to know that it is running when the server boots. Also, I used a program at some point that was terminal based and it showed be what programs ran when the server booted up. It allowed me to check a box and select which programs I could run at boot. Since I have not gotten anything on the "General Help" I am posting this here: When a Ubuntu 10.10 I have starts up apache2, MySQL and postfix start properly but bind9 doesn't. Once booted is I run 'sudo /etc/init.d/bind9 start' it starts. The only thing odd on this system is I have a "inet6 v4tunnel" interface defined in my /etc/network/interfaces. From booting in the syslog there is:
Code:
/var/log/syslog:Feb 28 19:02:42 ubuntu named[1029]: starting BIND 9.7.1-P2 -u bind -d 9
/var/log/syslog:Feb 28 19:02:42 ubuntu named[1029]: built with '--prefix=/usr' '--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--infodir=/usr/share/info' '--sysconfdir=/etc/bind'
[code]....
Even with the bind debug level at set at 90 I do not get any more in the logs that what I posted before. The lack of errors in the logs is giving me no idea where to start. I commented out the IPv6 tunnel interface and rebooted and still no help. bind still is not starting at boot. OK, it is not a permissions issue, I have changed the config and zone files to be owned by bind:bind, root:bind, root:root and bind:root and it has made no difference. Doing a fresh install on a Virtual Box VM and configure it in a similar manner bind9 starts normally. (I am almost to the point where I will rebuild the box)

I have a file server running samba 3.4.0. I just upgraded ubuntu to 9.10. The upgrade was unfortunately stopped in the middle, but I think I managed to complete it.The problem is that now samba will not work after a reboot. The daemons are running, but any attempt to connect from a windows machine fails (Windows 7: the network path was not found). Manually restarting the service fixes the problem, but I need a more stable solution!Interestingly, I can ssh to the machine, or rdp to a virtual machine running on it.The logs don't seem to report any error:
Code:
stefano@SERVER02:/var/log/samba$ tail log.smbd
[2010/03/14 04:02:11, 0] smbd/server.c:1068(main)

I am setting up a server with Ubuntu Server edition. It is has 4gb of ram and had been working great the first week or so but something strange started happening about the same time I installed MythTV. After that, the server would slow down considerably and the ram being used would go from about 400megs up to all of the 4gb and use about 2gb or swap. After much research and investigating, I've narrowed it down to the vncserver starting up all 100 displays/sessions even if I try to specify one with : vncserver :1

I recently installed an Ubuntu 10.04LTS server. I have zabbix-server on that machine, and I noticed that after reboot it won't start. Probabily, the mix of upstart and old init.d scripts result in zabbix starting when mysql is not active yet, in fact in zabbix-server.log I see it cannot reach db. How can I make sure zabbix-server waits for mysql?

Hi all,
how can I make vncserver starts on boot?
Realvnc was installed by "apt-get install vnc-server" command.
There in NO start-stop script in /etc/init.d/ (is it ok? ), so I can't use update-rc.d. When placing
vncserver
or
/bin/bash -c "cd /root/ && vncserver :1" 2> /tmp/vncstart &
in rc.local it starts nothing but "vncpasswd //.vnc/passwd" (and YES, there is password in /root/.vnc/passwd)
Please, help!

I have an installation of F12 where I used VMM to create and run four virtual machines.
If I set the machines to start at boot in VMM, but set my host to not boot all the way into X, the VMs don't boot.
IS that suppoed to be that way? Does VMM's auto-boot of VMs depend on some X or GNOME stage?
If so, what's the best way to fire up the VMs such that it doesn't conflict with any subsequent use of startx? (Don't eant to end up with double the machines just because I had a need to fire up X on the host.)

And I do get the page saying that I've setup Tomcat successfully when going to http://localhost:8080 in my browser.

so my server is doing fine, but there is one odd thing I would like to fix. When I start and stop services, the CPU is maxed out for about five seconds each time. The services start the same speed, but it still does this. Small things like lm_sensors don't do this, just things like httpd and sendmail. THis server was upgraded to Fedora 11 with a netinstall CD a few months ago.

I'm new to Linux. I'm trying to install the VNCserver using SSH connection in a remote pc with Fedora 13. I would like to access the Gnome through remote connection. I did the setup Iptables freeing ports 5901 and 5902. Also set up vncserver and user. The user "aquiles" is a user of the system and also the vncserver. The problem is that I am not able to start the service. I think that seen anything related to Perl. Displays the following error:
[Root @ sinahome ~] # service vncserver start

The file /etc/sysconfig/vncservers

I just have installed FC 10 on a box that I will use as a router/firewall box. On the box I have three interfaces (eth0, eth0.704 (VLAN), and eth1). When the machine boots up, only eth0 and eth1 come up. If I run /etc/init.d/network restart, then eth0.704 will come up. If I add that command to rc.local, then all interfaces come up at boot.
I have the directive ONBOOT=yes in ifcfg-eth0.704. What would cause this vlan interface not to start at boot on the machine?
