Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Not Starting At Boot After 9.10 Upgrade?
Mar 14, 2010
I have a file server running samba 3.4.0. I just upgraded ubuntu to 9.10. The upgrade was unfortunately stopped in the middle, but I think I managed to complete it.The problem is that now samba will not work after a reboot. The daemons are running, but any attempt to connect from a windows machine fails (Windows 7: the network path was not found). Manually restarting the service fixes the problem, but I need a more stable solution!Interestingly, I can ssh to the machine, or rdp to a virtual machine running on it.The logs don't seem to report any error:
Code:
stefano@SERVER02:/var/log/samba$ tail log.smbd
[2010/03/14 04:02:11, 0] smbd/server.c:1068(main)

I am trying to share files between Windows XP machine, ubuntu server, debian server and ubuntu desktop. But mainly between ubuntu server and Windows XP computer.I also like to learn samba, because probably I could do all this with ftp server as well.I set up and configured samba following the instruction on Online Ubuntu Server Guide. But when I run the command:sudo /etc/init.d/samba restartI get:bash: /etc/init.d/samba: No such a file or directory I don't know what is wrong?

I would like the samba service (smb) to start on boot.
In the terminal (as root) I did:
/sbin/chkconfig smb --add
But after a reboot the samba service still doesn't start automatically. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?
-- Quick side question: Most of my experience is from debian and I'm confused as to why I have to add the /sbin path to most of my commands.

I had a working server 9.04 on my network and I could access shares via Samba and MacFusion from Windows, ubutu and mac boxes. After the upgrade I can not access shares via Samba, I can ssh in it just fine (no change there) also Macfusion mounts the paths just fine.
Anybody had this problem with the upgrade? It must be samba everything else is working (also I can't access any files from my Ubuntu Laptop running 10.10 Desktop edition)
Here is my smb.conf file:
[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)
wins support = yes
; wins server = w.x.y.z
dns proxy = no

How would I make sure cron is running every time my server is turned on? I want to make cron jobs, but I need to know that it is running when the server boots. Also, I used a program at some point that was terminal based and it showed be what programs ran when the server booted up. It allowed me to check a box and select which programs I could run at boot. If someone could tell me this program,

Since I have not gotten anything on the "General Help" I am posting this here: When a Ubuntu 10.10 I have starts up apache2, MySQL and postfix start properly but bind9 doesn't. Once booted is I run 'sudo /etc/init.d/bind9 start' it starts. The only thing odd on this system is I have a "inet6 v4tunnel" interface defined in my /etc/network/interfaces. From booting in the syslog there is:
Code:
/var/log/syslog:Feb 28 19:02:42 ubuntu named[1029]: starting BIND 9.7.1-P2 -u bind -d 9
/var/log/syslog:Feb 28 19:02:42 ubuntu named[1029]: built with '--prefix=/usr' '--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--infodir=/usr/share/info' '--sysconfdir=/etc/bind'
[code]....
Even with the bind debug level at set at 90 I do not get any more in the logs that what I posted before. The lack of errors in the logs is giving me no idea where to start. I commented out the IPv6 tunnel interface and rebooted and still no help. bind still is not starting at boot. OK, it is not a permissions issue, I have changed the config and zone files to be owned by bind:bind, root:bind, root:root and bind:root and it has made no difference. Doing a fresh install on a Virtual Box VM and configure it in a similar manner bind9 starts normally. (I am almost to the point where I will rebuild the box)

provide support for a small business that uses Windows machines to access files stored on an Ubuntu server which has just been upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 (32 bit version). Before the upgrade the users accessed their share by this batch file:
Code:
net use x: \servernamesharename /user:username
This would then prompt the user for his or her password which they would enter to allow them access to the share.Since upgrading to 10.04, the user gets a "system error 58" stating "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation"If the batch file command is changed to:
Code:
net use x: \servernamesharename
The same error message is given. The only work around I have found is to modify the file to read:
Code:
net use x: \servernamesharename /user:username password
This is not ideal at all as it makes the password protection useless. When I performed the upgrade I left the smb.conf unchanged. The smb.conf file is:
Code:
#
# Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
#
#
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the

I've been using ubuntu for a couple of years rather successfully on my dual-boot Vista/Ubuntu. It upgraded to 8.0(4?) LTS, 10.04LTS and I kept it there until this afternoon I followed the instructions on the ubuntu site to open up a terminal and update-manager --somearg to provide me with a nice little "Upgrade" button on the update manager. I clicked said button per the instructions, let it do it's downloading and whatever else it does. The last step of the installation is a system reboot. I let it do that, and then my grub menu comes up as more-or-less this:
Code:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-32-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-32-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.24-28-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.24-28-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, memtest86+
Other operating systems:
Windows Vista/Longhorn (loader)
If I select the top one, I get:
Code:
Starting up ...
with a blinking cursor under the S for a LONG time (used the power switch after ~40 mins). I tried the second 2.6.32-32 option for recovery mode. It spit a bunch of gibberish to the screen for a couple seconds and then stopped, presumably doing the same thing, just with 100% more gibberish. I tried booting into Vista, that worked fine. Just to reiterate, I've not yet seen a 10 LTS login screen or desktop, and can't get one yet (just a "Starting up ...") Just to add, I did try searching, but since the only info I had to go on was 8 LTS to 10 LTS upgrade, and "Starting up ...", well those are just hard keywords to get any meaningful info.

I am currently using FC10 on a Dell 4600 with 2GB of ram. I love Linux as it is the most stable OS around. My end goal is to have the machine boot and start the vncserver automatically, eventually using an ssh tunnel to make it secure. My main problem is the vncserver is not starting on boot, I must login as a user then it works great. the error I get is
[Code]....
Basically what happens is the vncserver fails on boot however, if I login to the Fedora box I am able to connect and I get the GDM login screen. I have read many, many posts but have not been able to get over the boot issue. I really want to make this a headless box I can put in another room so I have more room for my musical gear.

I recently installed an Ubuntu 10.04LTS server. I have zabbix-server on that machine, and I noticed that after reboot it won't start. Probabily, the mix of upstart and old init.d scripts result in zabbix starting when mysql is not active yet, in fact in zabbix-server.log I see it cannot reach db. How can I make sure zabbix-server waits for mysql?

Just upgraded to F15 and I cannot seem to get the sendmail service starting at boot time.It starts and works just fine by hand after boot, so there's nothing wrong with the sendmail
configuration itself."runlevel" shows a current run level of 5 and "chkconfig" shows sendmail on for run level 5.All the other mail service (mailman, clamd, etc.) start fine.Doing "service sendmail start" after boot gets everything up and running just fine, but itsure would be nice to have it run at boot like it used to

I wrote a little script that will automatically mount two Samba shares to my home directory and I was wondering if a) You guys/gals had any input as to how I could improve on this script and b) Tell me how I would go about having this script automatically execute when I log on via SSH.
Code:
#!/bin/sh
mount -t smbfs -o username=Myuser,password=Thepassword //192.168.1.102/Data1 /home/user/Data1

I recently upgraded a Ubuntu server from version 8.04 to 10.04 and after a reboot the webmin and syslog-ng server do not start at boot anymore. I can start them manually by doing /etc/init.d/webmin start and /etc/init.d/syslong-ng start and everything works fine until I root again. Granted this machine is rarely rebooted but when it is, I don't want to have to remember to start these services. I have tried a full removal of syslog-ng and reinstall but to no avail. The entries are in the rc directories like they should and the links are valid.

I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.
nmbd.* /dev/null
smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null
For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: This response was from IP xx.yy.z.zz, reporting an IP address of xx.yy.z.zz.

I ran update-manager earlier today and when I next booted I was told I had insufficient hardware to run unity -- despite it running just fine before the update. Now every time I boot I don't get the message, but it still won't run unity.I have tried downgrading them by forcing versions in synaptic but I keeps on wanting to remove large numbers of other packages that depend on them.

GNU GRUB starts up. I dual boot the latest version of Ubuntu and Windows- select Ubuntu
It says too many connections
Then shows a screen loading Ubuntu 10.10 (64-bit)
Then black screens and nothing happens
This only happened after I swapped out new hardware
My old hardware was:
Motherboard- Gigabyte 790XTA-UD4
Processor- AMD Phenom II Quad Core Black at 3.4
Graphics card- ATI Radeon HD 5850
The new hardware (in there now):
Motherboard- an MSI 890FXA-GD70 (MS-7640)
Processor- AMD Phenom II 6-Core at 3.3
Graphics card- ATI Radeon HD 6970
Nothing was or is overclocked
I did nothing to Ubuntu after or before installing the hardware

I have set up a new IP specifically for SSH and configured SSHD_Config accordingly to listen on this new interface and a specific port. However when I reboot SSH is not starting. Looking in the syslog it shows that it is unable to start. It looks like its trying to listen on the interface before it is set up.
Code:
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (601) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process ended, respawning
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (610) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process ended, respawning
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh main process (618) terminated with status 255
Nov 29 13:00:23 anubis init: ssh respawning too fast, stopped
I am able to start SSH manually once the server is booted. Do I need to set up my interfaces differently to ensure they are available prior to SSH starting somehow? I don't want to change my ssh config to listen on all addresses.
